It's easy to take things out of context. Back in the old days of hockey the refs weren't as strict with penalties. you'd see alot more slashs, crosscheck, highsticks, trips not getting called. Most star players would get brutalized with illegal attacks. Messier as a star player took his share of beatings and sometimes on occasion he would throw a elbow or get in a fight. You have to show teams that if they take liberties with you you are going to fight back, or you'll end up like Lemieux and Orr your career cut short.

I legit remember living through this in real time.
Keenan would get in interviews bashing Linden for his gameplay but the rest of the team kept backing him up and in many cases taking some blame for themselves.
Linden was more respected by his teammates than his team.
They were starting to even rebel against Keenan and that is why he traded Linden and anyone remotely connecting to him in any way contrast to Keenan's authority.
The Canucks simply because a team with no heart and no ambition to succeed for management and did not care anymore.

As I was watching this, a curious thought crossed my mind when the video was discussing Mark's hit on Linden after Linden got 'cheap-shotted' by Graves in Game 6 of the SC Finals.
Was there a lot of hate that was built between the Rangers and Canucks in that Stanley Cup Final?
It almost seemed like Mark was like someone from the Mafia (example only). In that the Canucks almost upset the Rangers in that Final and it almost seemed like they were not only going to rub it into the Canucks' skin when they won the cup but they were going to make Vancouver pay for making the Rangers work so hard to win it. Just the way the whole Messier-in-Vancouver-stint unfolded, it almost seemed like Mark was committed to completely make Vancouver pay. Like Mark was doing a hit on the Canucks such that the team would be decimated to the point that they wouldn't be going back to the Finals anytime soon after he finished his time with Vancouver. I know that's not the truth of what really happened...but just by what the organization endured during Mark's time in Vancouver, it almost seemed that way. Do you see what I mean?

The guy who made this video speaks like a woman. Messier is one of the greatest to ever play the game. He fought, he protected his teammates fighting tough guys like Stephen's and Daneyko, he enforced, is a hall of fame offensive and defensive talent
And most of all is the best team leader ever to lace them up. He didn't fit in Vancouver and ownership never should have allowed his demand to bring in Keenan.
They destroyed the Canucks who were not a team that worked well with disciplinarians. That's an honest statement

There was no way messier and his ego would allow him to wear any number besides #11. That’s why the handwritten contract specifically stated #11. Considering no one had that number on the roster, why make it a point to list in the contract Unless he demanded the number.

    • @kpk33x
      @kpk33x 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

Agree. I didn't believe that until I saw the handwritten contract draft the first time. Not being in the room we don't know if Messier had been told "don't worry about it we will address Maki." Knowing hockey as much as he should have, you don't take the number. You score a ton of cache with fans: "I switched from #11 to respect Maki and the tradition of my new team, I will choose #XX as my way of turning to a new era of Canucks hockey." Its that simple. He could have played the 3 years the same way with the same stats and results but the spin would be "Messier played hurt and wanted to help the team" and other positive spin. He pre-burnt that bridge to feed his ego all over a jersey #.

The fact that the end of this video got such little time compared to the rest is unreal. The Canucks were done when he came, and that Trevor Lindon trade helped bring in a decade plus of exciting hockey to Vancouver. Mess knows what it takes to win and he saw a rebuild was required. Not an easy thing with feelings on the line. He won with and without Gretz, twice. Canucks didn't have it anymore. Say what you will but for those that watched hockey back in the 90s, it was full on war out there. People also forgot that Bure tried to rearrange a face in Game 3. It was a nasty series on both sides. Sure it is despicable to look at today but it truly was a different game. Don't forget that in 1972 Canada won by breaking a Russian's ankle on purpose that Canadians still celebrate to this day. I do agree he shouldn't have gone to Vancouver, but if he hadn't, those changes would never have been made and that Canuck team would have led a much different course.

But I also knew Messier was way past his prime and that just because he was "Mr. Captain" it wouldn't translate to winning. I wasn't aware at the time about who would wear the "C" and what an issue it would be with Linden, but in hindsite, what a mess! I remember telling my buddies as we watched the game 6 Van/Nyr game - it’s a 4-1 game with 40 seconds left. Why is Lindon on ice right now? Are they asking the Rangers to take a run at him? Sure enough….it happens

Well he is 6 ft 4 and 205. He needs to smash someone. ijnstead he is lame. he could give mess a good go. maybe lose but do some damage.Remember 1982/ here's Grant Mulvey taking liberties with out players and in steps Ron Delorme. They go. Delorme beats yhim like a used punching bag. Canucks take the series, and go on to their first SCF. Trevor did not have that attitude. and it hurt him. what made me more sick was Brat marchand slapping henrik in the face. henrik did nothing,,.. 6-1 and just under 200. Chicken chit. neither did anyone else on that team gp after marchand. . so i don't much like the trend to soft players and soft teams

That 94 series was both the greatest I ever watched and the one that soured me in the 90s on the NHL. I felt like the league clearly favoured the Rangers. It wasn't just the Graves or the Messier cheap shots that the league did nothing about. It was giving Pavel Bure the game for high sticking and then when another Ranger did the same thing the next game, I can't remember if it was Messier or Beukeboom, they got 4 minutes and were allowed to stay in the game. Maybe the Rangers win anyway. But my hatred for the people running the league began there. I sensed and still to this day sense even less interest by the NHL to have a fairly run league. Everyone uses the former Arizona Coyotes as an example of how the NHL ISN'T rigging games. But that's not what I mean. Once you get into the playoffs, it's easy to manipulate the outcome of games. If Messier was suspended for game 7, as he should have been, who knows what happens.

    • @Viking8888
      @Viking8888 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +11

The refs were so biased in favour of the Rangers that entire series. Some of the calls against the Canucks were beyond bad and screamed "Rigged". I remember watching and freaking out at my TV at every bad call. I yelled a lot.
I truly think the only reason the loss for the Canucks wasn't worse, was that they were just that good at weathering the storm of biased crap coming from the refs and ultimately Bettman. There was just so much talk about it being 40 years since the Rangers had won the cup. Bettman (and everyone really), knew that it would be a massive deal for the NHL in USica for them to win that year, whereas it wouldn't resonate much further than BC if the Canucks won.

The rangers should have won in 5. They literally folded and beat themselves to let it go the distance. McClean stole game 1, but that was it. I guess you could say that it was the Devils series that made it difficult for the Rangers, but it literally should have never gone 7.

the rangers had 2.5% chance to win the top pick of the 2020 draft and they did to select Lafrenier. the previous year they were moved up to 2nd from 8th... if you compare the original 6 teams vs the rest of the league you see a huge difference in draft lottery results... they don't show the actual lottery draft, only the results. I really can't believe for a second that these owners are simply 'rolling the dice' when it comes to revenue growth

I despise Messier but it's entirely possible everything he's saying is true. Whoever negotiated the contract with him probably didn't know about Maki's number (or thought it would be sorted out), then couldn't reach the Maki family, but told Messier it's all fine and it's all going to be sorted out.
Remember - this was the biggest free agency signing in Canucks history. He was being treated like royalty with kid gloves (which is the real error in judgement). They probably made the situation sound less serious than he was. Someone might've asked "So is the number retired or not?" and someone else said "strictly speaking, no", and so "Then what's the problem?"
What should Messier have done? Like you said - he had no relationship with Maki. Pat Quinn did. Quinn could've come up with something and asked Messier to participate. He didn't because they were scared of pissing Messier off.
Unlike taking the Captaincy from Linden, where Messier should've absolutely known better (and was an arrogant primadonna to do so), the Maki number situation I don't blame on him.

Some things were bad for Messier I don't think he should have taken that one dudes number from the rafters or taken the captaincy from Linden. As far as Messier dictating trades I think that is alot of rumor and innuendo. Unless you were in the room you don't know was talked about. I also don't think it was wrong to bring in Keenan. A guy that had helped coach the Rangers to a stanley cup. Turned out to be the wrong move in the long run but if the Canucks had won a cup with Keenan they'd all be singing his praises. As far as being mad about Messiers big contract and decline on ice performance. That is a fair criticism but they signed a player that was 36 most players start to drasticly decline in their late 30s. It's a big risk to sign a player at that age for alot of money the Canucks management knew this took the risk and it bit them. As far as Messier suing them the Canucks management signed the deal so be mad at the Canucks office for allowing such a stupid deal. Most of this seems like nit picking. They thought Messier would be their savior and win the Canucks a cup it failed and now they are looking for any excuse to blame it all on Messier. Maybe they should have used that 11 million to sign some young up and coming players instead of Messier.

Yes, & Coach John Tortorella, a Keenan-clone, was another one of the team’s infamous core-busters! Tortz demanded sacrifice & loyalty from his players, but would cut afternoon practices & leave it to his assistants, so he could get a less-conjested & more leisurely drive in to Point Roberts to dwell upon American soil. Tortorella’s MO, was also to dog-house, humiliate & publicly berate from his bench, the most mild-mannered of his players (Yannik Hansen). He chased anyone out of town who tried to use levity or humour to ease on-ice or locker room tension, especially if that someone had prior knowledge of Tortorella’s coaching style & habits with other teams (Dale Weiss former-NYR ). As an emerging player Dale Weiss was traded away to the Montreal Canadians & was an impactful addition to their play-off run that year. Must have been completely refreshing to get out from underneath Tortorella’s no-fun & bullies-r-us locker-room for him. Weiss’ teammates loved him, but I believe Tortorella punished him as someone who knew too much about the mind-bending tricks Tortorella would deploy to gain loyalty & full narcissistic-control over his players. He didn’t want the threat of things leaked or under-mined…even with humour.
Tortorella’s philosophy seems to be that only the winning should be fun…& this philosophy has a short fuse when collective or selectively unwarranted abuse is involved.
      I’d love to sea an
In-depth expose’ on Tortorella’s time as a Canucks Coach, that I believe was another owner lead core-busting move & failed experiment. Is he hated or unjustly maligned? Is he deeply loved or respectfully misunderstood? He unforgivable sat Longo in Vancouver’s only Heritage Classic game to date, after returning from the Olympics, …which is essentially a middle finger to the fans, which these high profile heritage games sre supposed to be for. He was rested & eager & nobody, even back up Eddy Lack wanted to see any one but him start in goal. What other record-breaking goalie should be assigned the name of heritage player? You could say tickets were even sold under false pretended & team lost that game. It was a core-busting humiliation. Luongo asking to be traded afterwards. A shameful coaching decision! Has Tortz evolved in ways a tyrant like Mike Keenan never could? Has his tenure & age mellowed him, at all? Enquiring minds want to know,…does he feel any coaching regrets to atone for?

As horribly egotistical and arrogant and dirty and inhuman Messier (always) was, it sounds like at least 1/2 this mess was due to HORRIBLE ownership conditions; the Orca Bay ownership didn't seem to give a shit about hockey, the team, or Vancouver for that matter. It was an investment all the way, to make money, and then get out. Worked out for them, so, I hope they're all so proud of themselves.

I can understand how a guy like Messier, already a hockey legend and future hall of famer with a large ego, would really want to wear number 11 his entire career. I could also see Pat Quinn being dishonest with Messier about it and telling him not to worry about it. If Messier had just taken it upon himself to contact the family in advance and get their blessing, that really would've helped his public image. But he's a jock - he didn't give a crap.

Messier is basically a goon. The fact that the leadership award is named after him is laughable. We should rename the Lady Byng to the Sean Avery award too right? 🤦‍♂️

    • @dissimulii

goons were leaders back then. they would still be today if the league weren't "refined" to the point of boring. i was a Panther's fan from expansion. haven't watched a single game since 2016 and that was out of curiosity. apparently they won the cup and i didn't know until months later, and i live in canada.

To be honest, even the name Mark used to evoke intense hatred on my part - that was the name of my biggest personal nemesis of all time. I was long bitter with Messier (as well as my personal enemy). But I would give him the benefit of the doubt, if he came into a dressing room that was already divided, it's possible. Linden could only hold respect of more talented players like Bure for so long.

We went to a game at Rogers place and my 10-year-old daughter really just wanted to meet Mark Messier and get his autograph. They were playing the LA Kings . Luc Robitaille actually stopped before he got on the bus and signed an autograph for her. Meanwhile, Mark Messier almost ran us over leaving the parkade to head to Point Roberts, what an asshole. She still hates him.

here are some players we could have signed as ufa. Ron Francis, Adam oates, mike Gartner, and mark Recchi was just 230 miles up for pike in Kamloops, for two drafts.. and we could have taken him instead of Rob Woodward in 1988. We didn't sign joel Otto because he wanted like 180g a year. So Calgary got him and won a cup. Doug Gilmour was more than once, available to us.. so cry me a river, We are blind on draft day. . Quinn was a great guy and everyone loved him, but he was the worst drafter ihn team history
and we passed on matt Tkachuk and too a flop named jolevi. if i live to be 100,. i doubt we will ever win the Cup. end of rant. The canucks are supposed to be a source of entertainment, but instead they are big time stressors
