Welcome to Hell is an animation that is near and dear to my heart. It was the first animation-related paid freelance gig I ever contributed to (as a frame colourist) and was a part of my journey in becoming an animator. It's the reason why I made a Tumblr account originally (to follow the production blog). Seeing Welcome to Hell 2 come into fruition is incredible to see, and Erica should be very proud of her work. The time that has passed between now and the first W2H has only made her stronger as a storyteller. Honestly, I’m having trouble putting into words how happy I am that W2H2 is out!
I'm 20 and currently trying to decide what degree I should go for, and I've seriously considered animation as one of my options but I'm just too scared of my degree not being of use once I graduate because of AI and also seeing how the animation industry is treating its animators today makes me sick to the stomach... Can you explain if and how you deal with thoughts like these? And also, what inspired you to go after animation? What was the turning point for you? Greetings from Germany :)
@Mika-op6gy Before I started animation I was a programmer! I went to a career center for app development and game design, so I have a strong background in basic computer science! This helps me with AI generation because it’s not sustainable! It only exists right now because of stolen artwork, once protections are in place the programs will collapse! AI generation grows on what’s input, eventually it will begin inputting its own generations, and that will lead to the programs collapsing! It’s *Not* a sustainable system! Despite the growing issues in the animation field, industry workers are taking a stand!! Here in the USA we have the animation guild, one of the largest animation unions to support better rights and wagers for our workers! We don’t have to rely on big corporations anymore as well!! Independent Studios (Ofter referred to as Indie Animation) is taking off!! Crowd funding such as kickstarter has given independent artists more freedom in pushing there creations! Recent successes are, Hazbin Hotel, The Amazing Digital Circus, and my favorite example Vox Machina - original a DND campaign !! It can be hard to see these successes in all the corporate cuts and the huge change in the digital marketing ads world, but to me I know it won’t last. AI is math, artists are Soul! Even *with* AI generation it still takes a person spiting a few words for anything at all! Theres new animation fields that people tend to miss, such as the rise in VTubers!! There models and intros ect are all animation!! With the rise in popularity of Anime (Japanese Animation) the drive for quality has become more critical here! Chainsaw man, Demon Slayer, One Piece, Attack on Titan! These are huge projects that involve a ton of animators! I personally got into animation in my senior year of highschool when I was on an art team for a game jam! I was good at animating the sprites! It wasn’t until a year after I graduated and COVID that I realized I wanted to be an artist! I always loved cartoons and music videos growing up, made tons of those flip book animations! So I wanted to make those things too! Find a living out of it! Now that I’m graduating I know that Animation is more than just that! It’s clean up artists, composing, Story board artist, concept artists, Art director, executive producers, pitch directors ect!! The animation world is so much larger than it appears!! I’ll say this! If you’re seriously considering animation! Go for it! It’s not a course to simply land a job at a TV show, but to develop your art and find where your strengths lie! Idk it looks like they didn't intend to do so but animation is hard. Still PERSONALLY I wouldn't have minded waiting a little bit more to see the full polished complete animation. Great story still, the facial expressions and humor are kinda funny, specially the demon kid
My God, my eyes must be deceiving me, because I can't believe what I'm seeing on my screen now, finally, after years, we will finally have the long-awaited sequel to this wonderful animation, I can't wait to watch it, anxiety and excitement go hand in hand in this exact moment
I wish the OG Sock was still here. I don't like the new voice for him or Jonathan. Jon isn't a very good actor, and Sock sounds way too "voice actor-y". She's trying too hard and her lines sound forced and hammy.
Even in its unfinished state, im really glad this came out when it did. Me and my girlfriend loved Welcome to Hell back in the day. It had huge influences on our art and taste in animation. I lost her about 6 years ago in an accident. Felt like she was with me again in the moment. Thanks, Erica, and everyone who worked on Welcome to Hell.
Funny story; When I first saw the release 10 years ago, I thought it was the coolest thing ever that his name was Sock. I eventually went on to going by "Sockie" or "Sock" for short, all because of this series! SO I'M VERY EXCITED TO FINALLY SEE PART 1!!

Im glad Mephistopheles’ voice actor stayed the same. I named my cat after him when I first started rehabbing him and teaching him to eat and walk. This is crazy to know we first watched this together when he couldn’t even hold his head up and now he’s healthy.

the book literally saying to read the text out loud in the next paragraph to encourage a human to fuck around and find out (which sock does *accidentally*) is hysterical to me

Going from a confused child, who was shown the pilot by an older sibling and had no idea what was going on, to now understanding the pacing, quality writing and the high effort animation of this indie production is crazy to realize this is brilliant stuff, the quality and style of animation has improved by so much!
I mean this as a compliment when I say that the way Mephistopheles talks about renovating Hell is the same energy as how The Good Place tackles the new torture systems in The Bad Place.
Erica I know that this is going to get buried in the comment section, but I want you to know how happy seeing this continued made me. i was 15 when I watched the first one. I was sock for halloween that year. Had my official sock hat and everything. This was the best gift I could've asked for as a 25 year old. Thank you so so much Erica and everyone who made this possible. I'm so happy.

The writing and the dialogues are so incredibly well-done! Pretty much every line from Meph was a banger, everything was so tuned-in to each character, this was great! And the reveal of a Shadow-Jonathan??? OHHHHH. Istg every line hits so well it could be a book and i would EAT it
That's really sweet, thank you! I think a lot of the best lines from the characters are actually somewhat improvised! I write the general gist of the line but then tell the voice actors to say it however they feel most comfortable, or most like the character would say it, and we kinda workshop it together! I always feel like working with my other artist friends helps create a stronger piece overall!
When I first seen the first part ten years ago, I was ten years old. I waited since then. I went through serious depression, entered the third year of university, and ten minutes ago I just suddenly felt the urge to check that old project, in resurrection of which I stopped believing years ago. I was shocked. I`m still shocked. Thank you very much, I`m sure it`s very hard work, making a cartoon by oneself. Thank you for this work and new hope for next part. I will wait for another ten years if I must.

I love that the basis of demons also heavily implies that demons need to have consent in order to touch or invade a human's personal space. Also implies that Johnathan really doesnt mind having Sock around. Or else he would be kicked out of the house as Johnathan wouldnt consent to him being inside HIS house.

I remember watching part 1 when I was 14 and repeating the line "well old friend, never thought I'd find myself at your business end" in the mirror and rewatching the video over and over again because of how much I just vibed with the whole concept of w2h and especially Sock. Now I'm 20 and in university and boy is this just as good! The facial expressions are so gorgeous it’s crazy. Especially to grow up with this, literally going from 13 to 23 in between these releases is crazy but the improvement and growth of this idea is so clear, it rules.
I literally can't believe we're getting a sequel, oh my goodness. I remember watching this when it first came out, and now we have a SEQUEL!? I finished secondary school, did a gap year, did an undergrad, did a post-grad, and it's such a nostalgic trip to have this back in my life. I'm so glad I came across W2H!!

I feel like John being able to touch the demon book was a neat detail. If we assume the ability to pick up human objects works the same for demon objects, as both Sock and John felt the same - both wanted to know how the haunting of objects worked between them, John picked up the book without shock.

Even in its unfinished state, im really glad this came out when it did. Me and my girlfriend loved Welcome to Hell back in the day. It had huge influences on our art and taste in animation. I lost her about 6 years ago in an accident. Felt like she was with me again in the moment. Thanks, Erica, and everyone who worked on Welcome to Hell.

Im glad Mephistopheles’ voice actor stayed the same. I named my cat after him when I first started rehabbing him and teaching him to eat and walk. This is crazy to know we first watched this together when he couldn’t even hold his head up and now he’s healthy.

the second paragraph says to read the book out loud for everyone to hear, mentioning that if the book gets into the wrong hands, it "could risk moving [unreadable text] along," which is exactly what happens to jonathan - he reads the wrong passage out loud due to curiosity, and dies as a result.
the last paragraph (which has the most text cut off) mentions self-referential humor, lampshading the paragraphs before it.

The writing and the dialogues are so incredibly well-done! Pretty much every line from Meph was a banger, everything was so tuned-in to each character, this was great! And the reveal of a Shadow-Jonathan??? OHHHHH. Istg every line hits so well it could be a book and i would EAT it
That's really sweet, thank you! I think a lot of the best lines from the characters are actually somewhat improvised! I write the general gist of the line but then tell the voice actors to say it however they feel most comfortable, or most like the character would say it, and we kinda workshop it together! I always feel like working with my other artist friends helps create a stronger piece overall!

When I first seen the first part ten years ago, I was ten years old. I waited since then. I went through serious depression, entered the third year of university, and ten minutes ago I just suddenly felt the urge to check that old project, in resurrection of which I stopped believing years ago. I was shocked. I`m still shocked. Thank you very much, I`m sure it`s very hard work, making a cartoon by oneself. Thank you for this work and new hope for next part. I will wait for another ten years if I must.

I remember watching part 1 when I was 14 and repeating the line "well old friend, never thought I'd find myself at your business end" in the mirror and rewatching the video over and over again because of how much I just vibed with the whole concept of w2h and especially Sock.
Now I'm 20 and in university and boy is this just as good!
I wish we could get more episodes sooner but I recognize it's not at all something we are entitled to and that everything we get from you is something to be grateful for, as I am. Work at a pace that feels good for you and please don't burn yourself out!

I feel like John being able to touch the demon book was a neat detail. If we assume the ability to pick up human objects works the same for demon objects, as both Sock and John felt the same - both wanted to know how the haunting of objects worked between them, John picked up the book without shock.
