- So a while ago, we linked to a video that you all seemed to like very much.
It was from the extended TV version of 1983 documentary Breakin' n Enterin', and featured Egyptian Lover, one of the masters of the Roland-TR808 drum machine, giving a brief tutorial on how to use the box (filmed, we believe, around 1981). You can watch it here: • How to use a Roland TR...
Now, given how popular FunkinEven's recent MPC tutorial for FACT also was, when we heard that the Egyptian Lover was in London this Summer, we asked if he was down to recreate the scene for 2012. Being a total gent, he was up for it, and built a beat live for us in his hotel room after performing at Blunted. Of course the speakers that we brought didn't work, so the Lover ended up plugging his 808 straight into the hotel alarm clock, which made it all even cooler.
Filmed by Kamil Dymek
31 people don't recognize a legend who helped make the original 808 drum machine a classic!
I definitely recognize a Freak-a-holic.
What a legend. He deserves loads more respect and recognition than he gets. Seeing him in 3 weeks in Athens. Can't wait.
I love the Egyptian lover! He's so down to earth. I ordered a vinyl from him and he autographed it.
How can we order a record? Link? Thanks
For all of the goofballs out there who doesn't know who the Egyptian Lover is, He was the first LA Hip Hop artist that should get way more props. There wouldn't have been a Dr. Dre if Egypt, Egypt hadn't gotten our attention on the East Coast!
+Dwayne Williams You speak right out of my Heart Dwayne
Thank you bro! You have any good old school mixes I can hear?
Dwayne Williams Let me see what I can find. Maybe I create a new mix for u my dear friend !

This man was is a genius and pioneer of hip-hop and electronic beats. I was 13 years old back in 1984 and remember break dancing to his music.. Egypt! Egypt!
Egyptian Lover you are the greatest.. Thank you for making the music that made my childhood so great!
Many thanks to Egyptian Lover! He programed the beats that make you rock one another! If you want to one of the best pressed records of all time Just put on a 12' copy of Egypt, Egypt....I used it for sound check for years on my pa rig...people everywhere still love and respect ....
I djed an "EDM" night at a club and mixed Egypt, Egypt into some newer stuff and those youngsters lost their minds when it came on!
FauxReal exactly....what does the past have to do with the future? Everything if the future pays attention to reality........quality existed on a level that many dont have clue about,...music of quality is about a fire in the soul......................
lifting the sleeves for the kick drum. gotta love this guy!
maybe it would take you 30 seconds to recreate this beat, but it would take you 30 years to have his career.
you got 20 years left
Yeah if you
1. Own a 808
2. Know how to use it
3. Have done beats like it before
@@druidofthefang I beg to disagree. I'd say:
Yeah if you
1. Have Greg Broussard's talent.
Im back 7yrs later after my original comment and i forgot i watched this video before. Watched it like it was my first time until i saw my comment from 7yrs ago 😁 i ended up buying this album and it was a master piece. Egyptian lover is still going strong! See you back here in another 7yrs if im still around 👍
This is still a classic and THE tutorial of how to create a cool beats pattern on the TR-808. I could watch this over and over again.
I used to take my vinyl copy of "Dance" into the club for the DJ to play. Back in 86. The best damn beats ever in that tune.
Respect & appreciation for a master of his craft taking the time to school the rest of us. The Egyptian Lover, the Old School Legend: West Coast King of Electro.
Superb! Brilliant! Love it! I've listened to every early Street Sounds' albums back in the day, I got the first Electro 1 record off Sir Richard Branson at a party in Lancashire close to the brewery in the early 80's. Superb ... Good Man! 808, 909,101 and J60. Machines!
that rim shot really fixed the lighting
Hahahahahahaha
Russell H Fatality
I noticed the white balance switch there too 😂
the "cowbell" that comes in at 2:49 was always like an eygyptian lover classic back in the late 80's and 90's .... i wish i could work these machines!
The Legendary Nile King! I've been bumpin' your jams since back in the day. Uncle Jaam's Army, Dial-A-Freak days. Your beats are ALWAYS on my jam list. Love you Boo!

Awesome! As a producer I love seeing how music is formed, especially form Legendary pieces of kit like the Roland 808, E L You frikkin rock man!
Beware.... The KING OF EXTASY is back yo
There was a sweet spot sometime in the 80's when a 808 could be found in a pawn shop for a few hundred or less. Much like the Atari game system, technology was beginning to become obsolete due to newer products. Well I wish I would have kept both. Like my MPC 60. All are worth more than retail by far.
So cool. The beat is the anthem of the happiest times of my life.
king of the beats
1984 is a dope ass album! ima buy it soon, heard a few tracks and they are all hits.
If i had the 808 i would never get out my room with that!!
The new Roland TR-8 is a LOT of fun. I don't have one, but I rocked Guitar Center for 20 minutes and left wanting one, even though I own a Tempest. The TR-8 isn't analog (like the 808), but that only matters to a few techno snobs like me. Overall feel of the instrument is pretty much the same, just updated. I recommend getting one if you're as passionate as you seem about the 808.
Y'all don't realized how Legendary he is, I've seen him as I grew up many Memories!!!! 😁😁😁
A legend of the 80,s respect
