    I once brought my 808 to a local music store to test some monitor speakers. Suddenly people were filling the speaker corner because they were attracted by the killer sounds of the 808 from the real machine. Especially the kick sound with it's endless boom.

    Nice video and demonstration, look forward to the next one.
    I love the whole story of the 808. It's original purpose was to replicate a drum kit, but it sounds _nothing_ like a drum kit. However, for that precise reason, it inspires a whole generation to experiment and it becomes famous in its own right. What's not to love?

      maybe the sound, to me it said nothing, just not my kind of sound, maybe cause i´m very tired of listening this sound in lots of recordings, same happens to me with the 9O9, i´ll never paid what they ask for, in fact i would not paid nothing for this machines absoluty obsolete those days, Welcome Elektron and Dave Smith Tempest they are both lot more creatives and sounding machines

      Hi Alex, glad you enjoy our demonstration. The 808 is iconic indeed and it still inspires artists nowadays.

    • @paulricco9545
      @paulricco9545 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Sort of not true.The 808 was not made to replicate a drum kit, but rather to be a cheaper option to the Linn Lm1 drum machine...but it was still over a $1000 usd. Reviews of course slammed it as Musicians and producers WANTED a drum machine to replicate a real drummer . The TB 303 is the same story.
      Of course electronic music was not so popular around its release date, and the rest is history.

    You can hear the TR-808 prominently throughout the soundtrack for the first _Animal Crossing_ of all places; then again, that same soundtrack also has at least two homages to "Simoon" by Yellow Magic Orchestra, the very first band to adopt the 808 in the first place (their 1981 album _BGM_ in fact was the first to use it, and it's a *very* prominent feature of the music within).

    Just found this because of the OG creator Taro being on Instagram explaining the unique sound comes from the fact they used defective transistors, they later couldn't source as production and technology improved and production had to stop, loving this Doctor Mix Video too ❤

    Don't know how the heck I inadvertently hit a thumbs down, but I fixed it and am sooo glad this video was done to mark one of the greatest drum machines ever made!!

    Man I loove the 808 kick drum. If the 909 kick is an 80s action movie, the 808's kick is s 70s porn!

    The TR-808 is a classic drum machine that uses analog synthesis to create its sounds. The sounds have a very pure quality and are closer to the sound of the CR-series of Roland drum machines, as opposed to its popular successor, the TR-909. The TR-808 has become the signature beatbox used in most R&B and hip-hop as well as a lot of dance and techno music. Booming bass kicks, crispy snares and a distinctive cowbell sound made famous in the 1980's are all part of the 808 and its famous sound.
    Its 16 drum sounds include the famous boomy 808 kick, snare, low/mid/high toms, low/mid/high congas, rimshot, claves, hand clap, maracas, cowbell, cymbal, open hi-hat, closed hi-hat and accent. Most of the sounds can be edited. Bass Drum and Cymbal (tone, decay), Snare (tone, snappy), Toms and Congas (tuning), Open Hat (decay). All sounds have individual volume controls and individual outputs. Unfortunately it was not MIDI equipped but it did use Roland's DIN Sync.
    The TR-808 was OK in its time-it just didn't sound like real drums. When the Linn Drum machines appeared, the 808 seemed doomed. But its unique sound and analog allure have allowed it to find a long-lasting home in many forms of music. Ultimately, the 808 has become one of the more important and famous drum machines in the history of music, spawning imitators (ReBirth, DrumStation) as well as band names (808 State).
    Famous users include Orbital, Überzone, Download, Aphex Twin, 808 State, BT, Bomb The Bass, Sense Datum, The Prodigy, Josh Wink, Faithless, Skinny Puppy, Bushflange, Jimi Tenor, A Guy Called Gerald, Eat Static, Dr. Dre, Jimmy Edgar, Jimmy Jam & Terry Lewis, Freddy Fresh, Richie Hawtin, Kraftwerk, Jean Michel Jarre, Cocteau Twins, Marvin Gaye, Luke Vibert, LL Cool J, Ice Cube, the Beastie Boys, Nick Rhodes (Duran Duran), and Puff Daddy.

      yeah I know, but unfortunately this is what we have, all the modern re-releases of classic synths/drum machines done by roland are just an easy cashgrab, and I don't hope very much in behringer..

    I want to try out one of these so much, but since the last production was '83, I guess that'll mean hitting a lot of music shops and thrift stores. I was shocked to hear it's long gone. The store I went to only had some Alesis 16 and 18 or something like that.
