Taking a little time is key. 12 years ago I got laid off a week before my wedding. I spent that week frantically job hunting and ended up missing my pre-wedding brunch with out of town family for an interview. I don’t have a lot of regrets in life but I would do that week over if I could.
Companies instill the slave mentality and I think it was still active in you when you sacrificed your precious family time for a soulless company! We work to support our family, not the other way around! Glad you realize this :)
Same with being fired. That feeling of being jobless sucks. But need to take some time off like 2-3 days to be mentally refreshed. Though it only works if you got money saved up for this situation.
I was laid off yesterday and felt like the world was crumbling. Your video definitely helped me snap out of a quickly. A job does not determine your identity - gotta keep telling myself that.
I'm facing a layoff now, and this is very uplifting to read. I'm faced an option to stay on for a term to do what I would have otherwise done and train my replacement, or leave immediately with severance. The stay on part makes more financial sense, but leaving now better for pride and ego.
Thank you for reminding us it's ok to grieve! It really is and giving yourself permission is the first step to healing. Getting laid off can feel like a betrayal and it's easy to blame yourself, but it is NOT your fault. You can be the most competent employee and a company can lay you off, please don't beat yourself up, and focus on growing from this situation.
Thank your for adding to take a moment for grief. I recently got let go and it took me some time to really jump back into the job search and feel ready for a new job.
Thank you for pointing all these out. Sometimes I feel like I worked so hard and put a lot of effort into this job yet I still get smoked. It’s ok I have learned a lot from this job that it will be beneficial for my next company.
I just got laid off due to the company downsizing. Yes it’s a strange feeling I must say. But everything happens for a reason. In the meantime I’m heading to Hawaii and gon get this tan by the beach.
Excellent advice, wish I had your advice when my position was made redundant. So very important to greive a little bit but on to other thing. Such valuable information
I wish i saw this when i was laid off my first job a year out of college in the pandemic!! This is so helpful, and the importance to take a moment to grieve before hustling is so VALID and empowering to hear from someone else ugh i love this so much 😭😭
Northrop Grumman, where I worked for ten years as a SW Engr before being laid off, had different divisions. In our division, the severance package was just 1 week per year worked. But NG pulled a scummy trick. A different division of NG gave only 1 week per 2 years worked. So just before the layoff, my division adopted the other division's severance package, so I only got 5 weeks severance for 10 years work. Engineers in the defense industry get screwed like this almost every other year and really need to unionize. It's like defense companies are in a race to the bottom.
I have had 4 jobs in my 35 years of working. Every one of them I danced in the street with happiness when I got laid off. Fucking cry. Who the fuck fucking cries from losing their job? That's bullshit. I am 52 years old, and I have worked for 10 years of my life. Now I am retired. I have never been happier. I hated working! Love retirement.
Don’t ever give or sign a resignation letter, unless you’re truly resigning. That’s what shady employers will use to try to get you denied unemployment benefits. Also, read and fully understand all the unemployment rules and do not try to game the unemployment system. They are a complete shit show when you’re doing everything right but if you mess up, even unintentionally, it becomes an even more difficult system to deal with. They will check up on you and can find out if you’re going to school when you’re supposed to be “job hunting”. If you’re out of state or country they will know from the IP address. Sometimes people have had their payments withheld and had to waste time in the appeal process because of a vpn erroneously showing them somewhere else.
Yes, unemployment will make you jump through hoops, so always dot you i's and cross your t's with them. Check and recheck with a live operator. Going online can trip you up and getting clarity with someone live helps navigate the process quickly. 👍
@@JUBA524 If you are a minor, you won’t get it because you don’t need it. If you are a university student, there’s no way you have time or qualifications for a full time job.
The advice that Vivian is giving in this short is crucial, specially the part of grieving and not blaming in yourself about it. Take few days to process, ask HR for the letter and check for the unemployment benefits in your state. You will be ok, i assure you. ❤ life has something more amazing for you in the future, just trust in yourself.
Hey Vivian! I've enjoyed you for a while now, but this is the first video that made me subscribe. You were probably still in grade school when I was in my twenties and needed this advice, but thank you anyways! Love you! We are now family.😊
Wow little over 20months that's 1yr and 8 months ... Imagine that be sweet... U don't have to worry about finding a job ... U can even take a vacation with that serverance pay plus if u get unemployment benefits ur set for months depending on how long ur qualified to receive benefits or how long u choose to be unemployed 😂😂
Not the same, but when I retired from the USAF, I had to adjust to it. But it's an opportunity to reinvent yourself as well, and branch out. And there is an emotional adjustment that happens in this situation, because it's a very stressful change. That will make you stronger in the longrun.
I was new employee and then laid off, guess they just needed someone new temporarily until the part time experienced employee came back for full time. I was easily replaceable, especially being new to the job
The emotional rollercoaster is HUGE! Never under estimate this. Unemployment Canada - Alberta - DO NOT apply for employment insurance UNTIL the severance pkg is done, the 4 wks per year!!
Ask HR for outplacement services to be provided in your severance (redundancy) package in addition to severance pay. This will provide you with helpful career transition services such as career coaching, help with your resume, job searching, applications and interviews. In Australia, it is standard for this to be included.
Thank God my children are adults and I no longer have babies. Children are a blessing but they are a burden in some cases especially if you get laid off. I'm a government employee and I still work on my skills and side hustles. I love the gig economy apps and rebate apps that keep some income in my pocket because I'm too proud to turn on these apps and do a small task for a small amount of money because it adds up .
No shade but when you lose your job you don’t need to find mother job you need to start a business no become an entrepreneur if you can. You should’ve already had a side hustle and made sure your job wasn’t your only stream. Use this time to take your business to the next level.
I usually ignore posts like this. But not anymore. This was one of the best support videos. Thank you so much for your energy and support. “I GOT THIS!”.. “YOU GOT THIS!”.
Make sure you get that letter; An employer told unemployment that I left without cause, the letter & unemployed that the company payed for got my unemployment!!
They are offering me one pay of less than my bi-weekly check. Without any warning, motive or screw up. Worst feeling ever. More when i never got a memo, a warning or nothing in almost 5 years. This sucks. I am trying to see if i can start my own thing, but i don't even know in what or where to start. Thanks to God i have a emotionally supporting family. But i need to help them. I probably need to move again so i can help them. I hate how a company has so much power over your life. I got an education from college, but remote working is becoming less and less available. My advice dont bust your ass for any company. At the end you are just a number.
Im so glad I found your vudeo. I was laid off yesterday from YUM Brands. Even though the companys performance was good didn't stop the layoffs. Any additional advice is appreciated
I was noticed of my lay off yesterday but I’m happy because I didn’t like the boss. She would yell at her employee about little things and I’m happy I won’t be there any longer. Good first job experience for me though, I was easily replaceable by an experienced employee that came back for full time. Although they have a new person coming after thanksgiving so maybe I wasn’t the best candidate either
This was triggering. I was laid off in 2014 and never did get my severance after 13 years of work because I had an attorney look at the paperwork. The company sighted missing the response date as the reason and said I forfeited my severance. I'm sure it's the law firms fault, but still. I never got my money. Left a bad taste in my mouth knowing I could have used it and know I'd still have some in my savings
I wish I knew this when, after the pandemic, they called me back to work, but I couldn't go back to my kids where still distance learning. so they let me go.
Yes it does. I immediately applied for UI (unemployment insurance) after being let go. They ask for you to provide proof of how much you received in severance and told me I had to wait 6 months before reapplying. The amount you receive in severance is definitely considered in determining when you can start receiving unemployment
Hey Vivian, can you make a video about what to do with your investments during a recession? I’m very new to this and I wanna make sure I make the right calls.
Apply for many credit cards as you can on same day so all credit inquiries won't show n your credit. Must do same day. Your credit will go south but survival is most. Hint: government can't pay its debt so they apply for credit every time
How long can you ask for a lay off letter? Asking for a coworker who worked 10 years before being laid off. The only reason another coworker and myself was found a different department to work in is because we threatened to find a new job and not return.
It’s going to be okay.. my boyfriend was laid off a week ago today, it felt like the world is crumbling in on both of us.. just remember it wasn’t your fault! & you will find a better job soon take sometime to recover.
You do realize that severance pay will disqualify you from receiving unemployment. Depending on how much severance it could effect receiving unemployment all together. That is why companies offer severance! Girl get a new day job.
Exactly. I don’t think many people realize this and it’s clear she has never received severance and tried to apply for unemployment. I received severance and when I applied for unemployment, they told me I had to wait 6 months and if I’m still unemployed, to then reapply due to the amount of severance I received.
@@smores8982 Exactly! So I guess it’s nice in the respect you don’t have to deal with filing unemployment and can get that lump sum immediately which is better because if you go find a new job tomorrow you’re ahead of the game. But if your employer decides to give you severance for 1 month then you just have to wait a month before filing.
