  • New Lexus IS takes on the benchmark mid-size luxury sedan, Germany’s formidable BMW 3 Series 👉Full Comparison Test: www.carsales.com.au/editorial...
    BMW made a compelling return to form when it landed the seventh-generation 3 Series in 2019 and was named carsales Car of the Year the same year.
    More than 12 months later, however, there’s an ambitious new mid-size premium sports sedan from Japan chomping at its heels.
    Wrapped in a fresh new exterior design, the 2021 Lexus IS range brings more standard equipment, better safety and driver assist technology and also leaps ahead of its predecessor dynamically.
    On paper, these German and Japanese executive sedans are much closer than you may think. But does the underdog have what it takes to knock over the benchmark in its class?

      At least the BMW has a proper infotainment system and interior befitting the price tag, not an overpriced Toyota Camry with tacky interior elements. The IS interior is unchanged from the 2014 model except for round air vents, 7 years ago. The cruise control stalk is off a 10 year old Toyota Yaris.

I guess we will have to see whether those engines are in fact reliable. Actually, Toyota has used in the past crappy BMW N47 diesel engines in Avensis. Those engines were breaking down a lot and Toyota customers didn’t even want to buy Toyotas with those crappy BMW engines. Those engines were pure junk, not up to Toyota standards. It was a very bad deal for Toyota to use those engines in first place, so I doubt it will ever happen again.

    I have tried these two current gen models. The Lexus vs BMW:
    * Lexus has less rear leg room but agree seats are more comfortable
    * No wireless charging or ambient lighting
    * Electric steering column which makes it easier to get in/out car
    * The fit and finish inside Lexus is best in class but impressed with 3 also, its not far behind
    * Interior feels more crammed in Lexus
    With the Lexus though you are essentially buying an 8-year old platform with some new sheet metal and interior enhancements. That doesn't cut the cake for me.
    In the BMW the infotainment UX miles ahead and customisation amazing. Plus the engine is much more efficient and powerful, however miss the revvy nature of the NA V6.

    Why don't car reviewers ever talk about long term reliability in their comparison tests? Isn't it misleading to tell consumers that the BMW is the better car when they have no idea how unreliable BMW cars are? I think that if most first time luxury car buyers were aware of just how much more reliable Lexus cars are compared to BMW, they might be willing to sacrifice vehicle dynamics and styling. I also think Lexus does an extremely poor poor job at marketing their main strength, their bullet proof reliability.

    • @jay-uo2bi
      @jay-uo2bi 3 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Because you can not define long term reliability. There is no number in the specifications that tell you how reliable. Even if it's a BMW, you cannot say that it's unreliable as it's a brand new model, they could have improved.
      Consumer reports can't be trusted. J.D power, maybe?! Obviously it can be said that the BMW will likely be the less reliable car, but you cannot say the BMW will definitively be TERRIBLY unreliable!

    • @shekhmostofaabedin6988
      @shekhmostofaabedin6988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      @@jay-uo2bi Absolutely agree with you. It can't be measured in an initial review nor are there any real stats. That being said, I often find non car people asking me which luxury car they should buy and usually they want to buy a German car. I then tell them about how the probability of the German cars needing a lot of maintenance is really high and then suddenly this news to them. I think reviewers should touch on the subject, they should spend a few minutes explaining to the consumers how historic data show Lexus to be much more reliable. They should also tell the consumers that they are not saying that the BMW will be unreliable and they can do what they want with that information. The reason Lexus vehicles are less sporty is because they do not compromise on reliability. I have said too much, I digress.

    • @maheshmurali2697

      Totally agree. I think cars should be reviewed by car mechanics not journalists

    • @MercOne
      @MercOne 3 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Because they aren't there to evaluate that. Why would reliability be the most important thing for them to point out here? I mean I get that the Lexus is more reliable, but this is a sports sedan comparison and that is what the test is about, not a survey on reliability. I don't think there is anyone in the world that doesn't know that a Lexus is more reliable than most other cars on the road. You reliability fanatics don't seem to ever be able to talk about anything else concerning the actual car, which is why cars like the outdated IS, cancelled GS and other RWD Lexus models don't sell. Don't you all understand that reliability isn't enough anymore? All cars are more reliable now than before many buyers want a better, newer more up to date vehicle and are willing to sacrifice some reliability for that. There is absolutely no excuse for this IS350 to still be using the same V6 from 2006. That's pathetic, no matter how "reliable" it is. If Lexus wants to truly flex then come up with fresh products while also making them reliable. That would be far more impressive than using the same mechanicals from 15+ years ago and harping about how reliable it is. The Lexus GS failed for this same reason, no updates since 2012.

    • @shekhmostofaabedin6988
      @shekhmostofaabedin6988 3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@MercOne Righto mate. Agree totally with you about Lexus. They do need to innovate. Being a reliability engineer, I do tend to focus on reliability quite alot. But these cars are targeted at the average buyer who should be aware. In my experience, they seldom know how much headache they are getting into. Most BMW drivers just want the prestige but then they are enabling companies like BMW to keep their bad practices. Progress for the sake of progress isn't something that is beneficial for their consumers. Now, imagine this, if BMW made a product that was as reliable as lexus, they could literally kill of the competition. Who would ever buy an outdated lexus over a reliable BMW.

    All credit to the reviewer, however, what I do appreciate in a review is a look at different aspects of the cars, then, at the end, a conclusion(s) being drawn. Honestly, by the 3rd minute I was like, I already know what the pick is going to be as the Lexus was being bashed.
    I agree with the verdict, as it corresponds with other reviews, but I don't like how the review is done. For example, the lack of amenities in the rear is a valid point, but I didn't agree with the leather seat backs being a large point of discussion (BMWs are like one of the only few brands that have plastic seatbacks, and this isn't even on all their vehicles.). Moreover, the "attention to detail" comment didn't include a reference to the disparity between the two.
    Say all the positives and the negatives based on good reason. What I don't like is someone just saying that's good and that's bad but we can't understand why.

    BMW's are empty $ pits after 50k miles and/or 5 years old. Lexus will ride like new after 100k + miles. Quality is perfect. I'm the 2nd owner of a 2002 ES300 with 183k miles, drives like new, nothing is broken. Quiet like a vault, solid like a tank. Luxurious. Love the IS350 F Sport, maybe when i retire in 4 -5 years I'll get a 2021 in great shape.

    So, a lot of people here are very biased when it comes to lexus. But heres the thing most people are missing. These are very different cars for very different people. On the surface bmw vs. lexus is an easy lexus win. But in recent history bmw has had some of the most reliable engines on the market ex: b58 and b48(which is in the 330i) this bmw will be on the road 10-15 years from now if you actually decide to do the maintenance.
    On top of that bmw is a more enthusiast car, it’s more for spirited driving and not for a chilled laid back experience. Bmw if you decide to take care of it will take care of you. If you want a more fun car you get the bmw if you want a car that’ll be very fun to toss around corners you get a bmw. This is coming from the guy who loves Lexus nearly over every car brand.

    I wish we got a AWD Lexus IS version in Australia. Why do they always let us down

    • @RDDHopsing77
      @RDDHopsing77 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The AWD Lexus IS350 was offered in North America (Canada and northern states) because of the winter snow conditions encountered. This goes back to when the current gen Lexus IS was first released in late 2013. They also offered to the Northern Americans a heated steering wheel for the same reason. In Aus and other warmer US states just heated and cooled ventilated seats, no steering wheel option. To highlight the AWD was for function not performance is shown by the fact that the AWD drive had the previous gen's 6 speed gearbox while the more sporting 350 RWD had an 8 speed gearbox. Obviously some technical issues necessitating this. I think the AWD used to also use the detuned 350 which was also available in the US and sold as an IS 300.

      @@jacksalami9945 Hardly any ice and snow where Australian people live. Consequently, it's not worth it for Lexus to import an AWD IS. If it was a performance oriented AWD then they would probably import it into Australia. This is the point I was making. Lexus targets its market. eg IS in UK and Europe are all hybrids. No purely naturally aspirated option. Whereas the opposite is true in the US market where there are no hybrids. (may have changed recently). You didn't explain why not having an AWD IS made you feel let down?

    I own the 2020 330i. Its probably the best car i've ever owned. comfortable yet oddly sporty for a 4 door sedan. I needed a car that was a daily driver but didn't want to completely get rid of all sportiness by buying a nissan, honda or toyota.
    BMW's sporty DNA is still extremely present inside. Whenever you step on the gas, it responds in an instant. Very aggressive when you want it to be. Sport mode stiffens the suspension drastically, tightens the steering wheel and expands the gear tolerance to offer more RPM and turbo spool between shifts. When in comfort, it noticably gets more floaty and pillow-y suspension. All this at your fingertips while still getting 30-32mpg and a luxury feel.
    I want to add its overall look demands a attention on the highway. For some reason, these cars aren't very common (at least where I live) and it always turns your head. Sporty taillights, the stance is very masculine, the headlights give a very present and demanding look. Truly a one-of-a-kind car and sets the standards for all sedans
