I think Beamers, Benzes, and Audis compete with each other. Lexus doesn't get into all of those competition games. I think Lexus has a firm understanding of their target demographic and sticks with the tried and true. The tortoise vs the hare...a reliable and faithful wife vs the flashy and wild mistress/side-piece.

I'll take the wild hot chick all day/night. But there's more to it. Jag F-Types don't rust (theres one small steel guard plate, mine looks perfect after 8 years), they use the same transmission as an $800K Rolls Royce, they tune to 700HP without creating issues, you can abuse them daily and drag race weekly with no breakage or even change over time, they are amazingly refined, super comfortable, built like tanks, a little too heavy, fast as hell cars that are unbeatable off the line (AWD) or from a roll (RWD).
BMW nor Toyota-Lexus has an analog.

Back in 1977 just out of high school, I worked for a car leasing company in Los Angeles. It was nice working there because I got to drive all the fancy cars I could never afford to drive. I wasn’t really into cars so much, and never even knew what a BMW was. When I got to drive my first 320i. WOW, that thing was tight! Steering was a dream, twisty roads and corners were a blast!! Now hold on a minute a very high end toyota camry xle or xse hybrid or non hybrid is still extremely nice and should be an option.
I would consider getting a camry xle or xse hybrid which is high tech but extremely reliable too as toytas ecvt is proven tough and it's extremely fuel efficient like 47mpg while having a beautiful creme or red perforated leather interior as standard on the higher end models for just 30-32k and it doesn't look like a boring car.
The new camry looks super sleek and sharp unlike the last generation. I'd hold on the Lexus consider a premium grade 4 cyl fwd camry. Don't bother with the v6 and AWD it's not worth it. The 4 cyl and fwd is better and I drove it. It's surprisingly quick and even more reliable. If you ever have to do spark plugs, chains, head gasket, intake and exhaust gaskets or manifold ect having 1 engine bank of 4 cylinders is better than 2 banks each having 3 cylinders that makes up a v6. Consider the premium grade Camry and go look at some at the dealer.

Very true about BMW oil change intervals. Here in Western Australia where the climate is considered extreme in summer, I had an F80M3 Competition. The BMW recommended oil change interval for the S55 3.0 straight 6 twin turbo engine in the M3 was 2 years or 24,000 km! When I asked for oil changes every 6 months, BMW said it was outside the service contract. I still had my oil changed every 6 months but BMW charged me $350 each time. Having owned a Lexus IS and 428i, there is an obvious difference in what these vehicles aim to accomplish. The BMW is a lot more engaging to drive and I definitely prefer it to the Lexus. But the Lexus was built well and obviously had its benefits. It was a comfortable cruiser and I know having this BMW is going to cost me in the long run. There is no doubt that the driving experience is better in the Bimmer.

As you said a lot of German luxury car buyers are there for a reason as cars like Lexus, will drive like a Toyota with extra trim and leather. Similarly, I wish the German cars found a way to improve their reliability credentials - sometimes you don’t need to be the most reliable but improved enough that the trade off is worth it for the driving experience to a greater proportion of customers than it is today (i.e. win over potential Lexus customers who are on the fence)

I personally am not demanding of my cars when it comes to performance and my priorities are in the order 1) reliability 2) Safety 3) Comfort 4) Cost 5) Performance. For this reason Lexus is the only luxury brand I would even consider, but I would never part with my inherited from grandmother 1999 Town Car unless it got totaled. Lexus cars are great and all, but in my opinion the Town Car is the King of all cars and can make it to 300,000 miles as well. My first and only BMW as a 1999 323i. I had list of issues that the dealer just couldn't seem to fix permanently, they would put the same part back and the issue would come back. At some point they stopped writing up tickets and just gave me the car back each time with no paper work. So it could be that BMW successfully hides issues and number or repairs from the engineering teams and that's why they don't get addressed. So they just keep making cars with the same problems through the entire production cycle of the model. I had to get rid of the BMW after 2 years because it was just to dangerous to drive. By comparison my Toyota Camry went 160k miles with only two minor repairs beyond normal maintenance items like battery and tires. I think the rear break pads were still the factory ones! Oh, and no rotor dust on my wheels like on the BMW.

But that’s because I take care of my cars. My guess is that the statistics may be due to the fact that most people who buy German cars just can’t afford to take care of them, hence the reliability issues. Granted, that doesn’t account for engine issues that are not the fault of the drivers. But Toyota and several other manufacturers are no strangers to those issues arising when they use subpar engine parts, etc. They just improve the parts and fix the mistakes for the next generation of engine.

I've been driving Hondas for the past 20 years, and have been pretty happy with them. Never had one leave me sitting on the side of the road, and they run like new, even when they have a lot of miles on them , if you just do basic maintenance. The part where you said BMW had 15,000 mile oil change intervals? WoW! That's insane. Not many oils could hold up that far, and the first thought that came to mind was the filter disintegrating, just like you said. I probably over maintain my vehicle, change oil and filter between 5 and 7k miles, and change all other fluids as well pretty regularly. It has worked well for me. Cheap insurance. Had my eye on a used BMW, but will hold off now, and get me a new Acura TL S-type, when I have enough saved for a decent down payment. Thanks again for sharing all that valuable information.

Lots of longevity and reliability failure problems stem from more cheap plastic and other materials more than design like you said, and yes, heat.

I will stick with my Lexus all day until I can afford to have problems in my transport. Great review, strait to the point. If you care about retiring confortable, listen to this review.

I wonder how long before BMW brings out their plastic engine block…. As far as the “lifetime coolant” that only refers to how long it takes for plastic cooling system components to warp and/or crack and leak out the coolant ⚠️

The BMW* Supra is the most interesting concept yet. Time will tell… perhaps they’ll work together to combine the ultimate-driving-machine with the ultimate-reliability and dominate all the other automotive manufacturers.

🤔, yes toyota Lexus and other Japanese cars such as Honda Acura, Nissan xfinity are very reliable cars, easy to maintain and affordable! Comparing with Germans HIGH END LUXURY PERFORMANCE VEHICLES such as BMWS, AUDIS, BENZS, PORCHES, VOLKSWAGEN, BENTLEYS, ROLLS ROYCE, RANGE ROVERS. I would no say that’s a fare comparison. Just saying 🤷‍♂️.

Seriously though. Who wants to drive any car up to 300k miles? I've put almost $10k in repairs on my Toyota Tacoma and it was never the engine. Everything breaks down eventually and I don't mind paying for more expensive parts for a more luxurious vehicle. A Lexus is just a deceptive Toyota sold at the price of a BMW. Who's the fool? A Honda Civic is "reliable" too. Why not compare Lexus to that?

As crappy as my BMWs have been, so have my Toyotas. They suck in different ways. My Toyotas were reliable, but not durable. The syncros always broke way too early, the engines were way too small, causing you to rev the snot out of them which created early compression loss, making even less power, and the plasticy interior quality is awful. You can't find old Toyota classic cars without 100% disintegrated interiors, and there are only a few of those. My four toyotas were all scrapped. The worst was my MR2 which gave up the ghost at 85K miles after spinning 6500 RPM in 5th to go 75 mph. BMWs at least used to be made well, so old ones are viable. Jag has been the only quality build I've owned in 40 years of car buying.
Bottom line, Toyotas are built to win a price war for people who view a car as a commodity. They are built to be as low cost as possible, creating a reliable but weak product. Most never drive their cars hard, so it works great as basic transpo. If you want to push or tune, its a ground-up rebuild. In fairness Toyota-Lexus doesn't make performance cars anymore. BMW makes cars to win a best value comparison. But BMW has severe reliability problems after the sale. Catastrophic problems.

All down to what you value, I want reliability and tech that actually works... I went from VW to Mercedes and back to VW..in 20 years of driving this year I bought a 'used' Lexus RX450h.. best car I've ever had.... only added extra extended warranty and service pack.. I like the look of some BMW's but have never wanted one. I want piece of mind. No turbo charges... the hybrid battery and 3.5l V6 has plenty of get up and go... the techi luxury stuff all still works.. best of both worlds.

regarding the "turbo heat" - just wrap the exhaust tubing in thermal insulation => hot exhaust (energy) but further from engine heat and inject water into the intake....

    • @dolezaljacob
      @dolezaljacob 3 ปีที่แล้ว

Yes, one thing is protecting the rest of the engine from the turbo heat. The other issue with these Hot V turbos is that the oil is getting very hot while flowing through the turbos. It deteriorates way faster. The entire concept seems questionable, you get almost instant turbo response, but the engine won't last long and requires frequent maintenance.

What am I missing? According to your litre description, there are 89 hp/litre on the normally aspirated 3.5 litre v-6 which suggests 311.5 hp. However the V-6 advertised HP is 270-275, up to 295 on the newer models. I am looking at a 2014 which advertises 270 hp which is a far cry from 311 hp. So where am I wrong? Is it my math ( always a 4 letter word for me ), or something else? I am looking for a reliable suv that will last me a very long time without a lot of problems and the 2014 is something that checks a lot of boxes for me. Any help is appreciated. Thank you and keep these great videos coming.

I’m confused. The title of this channel hints that we shouldn’t drive boring cars. Yet he’s constantly a banner waiver for the most boring brand ever conceived: Toyota and Lexus. Something’s amiss. I’ll keep my BMW’s and you can have your plastic, outdated, interiors, 4 cylinder engines, and cvt transmissions.

BMW is a toy, Lexus is a purchase. If you want a car that is your own, you buy a Lexus. If you want a car that you'll trade in, or give back to the dealership, you buy a BMW. The reliability alone sets the BMW back. Whenever you hear a person say, I'll keep the BMW until____miles and then send it back to the dealership, you know the Lexus is better.
