Here we have what could be considered opposite ends of the spectrum within the same segment.
On one hand we have a thoroughly modern BMW that’s got a turbocharged engine and stiffer chassis
And on the other hand we have an old-school N/A Lexus that doesn’t seem interested in anything other than looking incredible
But is there any overlap between these two?
Age before beauty means the BMW goes first and we’ve been in this many times before.
The benchmark entry level sports sedan takes itself seriously if not a bit too seriously.
The turbocharged 4 cylinder is down on HP by over 50, but still manages to get to 60 a whole half second quicker than the Lexus.
That’s what peak torque at 1500 RPM will do in a launch.
The ZF 8 speed gearbox is tuned to the point that its damn near tlepathic - BMW might do the best tuning of a torque converted gearbox in the world.
It’s chassis is also over 30% stiffer than the previous generation and the balance is an eyelash away from 50/50
What this results in then is a car this seems to have found the sweet spot in power, transmission, and chassis balancing. Now for the Lexus.
The IS 350 come switch a 3.5L N/A V6 - that’s two more cylinders and 1.5 more liters than the BMW and it still gets dusted off the line. That’s for 2 reasons
1 transmission. The 8 speed Lexus box is lazy in my experience even in their F cars
Second, and most importantly, is that snailshell. The BMW makes peak torque at under 2000 RPM and the Lexus doesnt get there until almost 5000.
Another annoying thing is the gauge cluster doesn’t slide over in sport mode like you get in the LC...i guess that’s fair….
Now you do have a multilink rear suspension so it’s not liike this thing handles poorly,
you just have to rev it out and when you do it sounds better. Not as good as the 5.0s but better than the Bimmer
However the biggest indication that this isnt a sport sedan has to do with this button here
    Gesture to stability control*
You have to have stability control off anytime you approach a corner. If you go anywhere near the throttle mid corner the computer throws a tantrum and cuts power
So it’s not like the Lexus isn’t fun to drive, but it’s just not as dynamic or responsive as the BMW...shocking. But let’s talk about some more Lexus-y things
I want to start with exterior design and I know lexus has a reputation for overstyling their cars, but my god this thing looks amazing.
I was getting Broll of this the other day and was staggered by the looks.
The front is sharp and aggressive, the wheels fit perfectly with the silver paint and the rear hips are wide and sporty.
All it’s missing is a V8 and quad stacked tips, but we’ll get those soon
The BMW on the other hand is very german and in essence very classic BMW.
Understated and handsome design with kidney grilles that aren’t the size of a planet.
Profile is perfect proportions and has the typical kink in the rear window and then around back it’s subtle and simple.
But with the BMW it’s like trying to find a math equation sexy
However, regardless of what revs your engine it’s easy to see the Lexus is making a comeback with scoring big points in the looks department.
Now we have to step inside and again we’ll start with Japan.
Here’s the highlights: back seat room is big enough for adults, nice
Stark red interior isn’t my first choice but ok
Seats are comfy, but cockpit feels small and tight
Infotainment is the old gen unit not the all touch unit in the leaked NX
But here’s where Lexus makes its value prop - it’s in the build materials. The fit and finish and the fact that each car’s interior is unique to the rest of it’s lineup. It just feels more special
And on that note let’s jump into the BMW
Again gunna hit you with the highlights: rear seat is liveable for adults
Seats are comfy, but not lexus comfy
Interior feels bigger, but more sterile
Technology and implementation is worlds better
And then there’s the finer details. The build, fit and finish is decent and honestly better than MErcedes. BUt there’s a significant flaw for me. Every BMW interior is a clone. So the 150k 7 series interior is damn near identical to what yo get here in the 3. I’m not mad about it in the 3, but if I paid what they want for a 7 series I’d be a little peeved.
There’s also things to be considered like Lexus’s reliability, especially with an NA engine, then there’s BMW’s potential to get more out of the car with simple modifications.

Lexus better looking outside, BMW inside is almost perfection of a layout. Own an older 330, love the handling and the repair bills taught me how to work on them. Buy a Lexus or lease a BMW.

I"ve owned BMW 3 series and Lexus IS/RX models. If you plan to keep your vehicle longer than 60,000 miles, you'll likely have your first major repairs on the BMW around this period. Is the typical repairs that all 3 series go through, it seems. Electric water pump, oil leaks, power steering leak, cooling system leak, battery safety terminal issues and seat belt/airbag faults. Other things go bad at around 90-100k miles, fuel injectors, ignition coils, alternator, high pressure fuel pump, rear main seal leak. Having said all this, the BMW is way more fun to drive than the Lexus IS, in my opinion. On the Lexus, you most likely won't have any major issues for at least 150k+ miles. I had an RX 330 with 250k miles. The only thing that broke was the AC compressor. It died at around 200k. I put 20-25k miles a year. And the IS300 (bought used) now 190k, i can't remember any repairs other than normal wear maintenance. The BMW 335i now has 160k miles. Still drives and looks great inside and out. The cost of repairs is on both Lexus are practically zero. Just some things to keep in mind...-:) and understand that this is from my own experience. What i stated here for educational purposes. -:)

I’ve not owned Lexus but have had many Toyota 4Runners and a few BMW’s. My X3 has 340k on it when my gf crashed it and we currently have 95k on our 2016 428i. BMW’s are reliable and it’s unfair in my opinion to label them as otherwise. Having said that, BMW usually is on the cutting edge of technology whereas toyota and Lexus use old tech that is more reliable. My 5th gen 2020 4Runner has a 5 speed automatic for instance, and I’ve heard Lexus is the same way. If you enjoy driving and don’t want an on/off appliance, BMW wins hands down.

I’ve owned 4 BMWs and 2 Lexus, newest being 2021 IS350 F Sport. BMW and Lexus are very different cars, as stated by many. All of my BMWs began having problems around 60k -70k miles, and I kept them well maintained. BMWs are short-term, fun to drive vehicles, probably best to just lease. Lexuses are long-term, reliable, decent handling vehicles. Just different cars. One is not necessarily better than the other. It depends on what you’re looking for.

I see your point in performance. However, that Lexus will beat the BMW any day after 5 years lmao! I appraise vehicles every day. And every time I get a 3 year old German car, the check engine light is on. And it is always the turbo. Just yesterday I have a 2013 vw tiguan, and a 2015 WV Jetta come to me, and both had turbo problems that would mean having to replace them. And the blind appraisal prices after I inspected their cars dropped by 60-70%. One guy sold no question asked. The couple with the Tiguan couldn’t believe it. They went home, called me that afternoon and said “fine we will take the offer” do yourself a favor. In the long run buy the Lexus. Lease the BMW. That 3 series will lose 70% of its original value due to high cost of maintenance, insurance and poor reliability. That Lexus will only lose 30% of its original value.

One important omission from an otherwise well done review: Modern BMWs use DI only and are subject to serious carbon buildup on the intake ports and valves. This often happens within the first 40k miles. Removing the carbon is necessary for proper performance and is a major PIA, requiring disassembly of the entire intake system at a cost of $1800-2000, or a good 1 1/2-2 days labor for a skilled DIY mechanic. As a former BMW mechanic, this alone is reason enough to avoid all BMWs after the E46.

I’ve owned 3 BMWs including a 750 iL (my last was and M550). I now own an IS 350 F-Sport. The driving experience is not as thrilling…..but my time spent at the dealership is non existent (except for oil changes). I absolutely agree that BMW will be a more thrilling driving experience and WILL most definitely be the superior performance car. But speaking from experience…..You pay for that performance out of your wallet. I spent so much time at Paul Miller BMW waiting for repairs that the staff thought I worked there. You buy a Lexus for three reasons…..1. Reliability 2.luxury 3. Quality. BMW pushes cars to their limits, which makes it a fun drive until it needs to be serviced. I used to carry two liters of synthetic oil in the trunk of my car because the oil light constantly came on. You have a choice: performance or reliability. You cannot have both at the top of the spectrum. You have to sacrifice and or prioritize one over the other.
If you want a car that you can push to its limits and provides you with exhilarating thrills and driving experience but will drain your wallet/and or time at the dealership…..then get the BMW. If you want a car that is sporty (but not an absolute beast) that will last you 200,000- 300,000 without any major maintenance cost or problems (if you change your oil regularly and take care of it) then go for the Lexus. Your going to either sacrifice performance over reliability or reliability over performance. You choose.

    After personally owning 7 BMW's , 1 Audi and 1 Mercedes - I drive a 2004 Lexus GS300 now- far better build car!
I WILL take the new the Lexus IS any day instead of that BMW!
I can honestly say the cars build in Japan are the best when it comes to reliability, quality and high RESALE value.
That old I6 might be old school , but is the most reliable engine offered in its class currently.
The plastic 4 cylinder, turbocharged - junk of the engines you will find these days in Audi, BMW or Mercedes are not in danger to handle even half of the mileage you will get from the V6 that is in the Lexus.
The Lexus also looks better in my eyes, The BMW is ok but is loosing the sharp European look that the old Beemers from the 80's and 90's use to have- E30,E36, E46 series.
BMW are build for high specs, not to last. Lease a BMW if you like, but buy the Lexus.

Great message, very honest and informative. You don’t see very many people who have owned German cars fess up to their quality. They will always say “German cars are made better” I love trolling German car adds on face boos and Instagram, and getting comments like “do you have facts to back this up?” 😂 oh boy I have a laundry list of facts to back up why German cars practice planned obsolescence. They are in the market to build cars that sell, not cars that last, because their “ Philosophy” is how can we make money if people don’t need new cars. Easy!! Trust!! Most of Honda and Toyota’s customers are returning customers and even then they are still getting new ones every day! I own a 2002 Toyota Highlander limited myself I got an excellent deal on it, and it’s resale value makes me SO TEMPTED to sell it and buy a new one! 🥰😭 but I do t want to get rid of it either 😍

Nice comparison video. I'd definitely pick the Lexus, I just wish they changed more of the interior with ambient lighting at least! (Although where I live the IS 350 is a bit more expensive than the "real" entry level 3 series the 318i and just a bit less expensive than the 320i...and it beats the pants off of both of those!)
Also as I mentioned in you IS review, that does have a proper touchscreen infotainment as well.

For all the IS fan boys on here. I had a 2019 IS and I loved it while I had it but I have the 3 series now and I’ll say I was impressed with the build quality and materials on the inside of this 3 series which are actually better than the IS. The IS kills me with the silver painted plastic parts inside. It at times felt like a luxury Corolla which I hated about it. The 3 series is definitely more business class than luxury but overall materials and build quality hit way above where it used to. And the performance of the 4 cylinder is crazy impressive as well. I went with it bc BMW has actually been scoring very high in reliability since 2019. Reliability has always been my premier variable in choosing a car which is why I always had lexus but I’m disappointed with the latest lexus offerings.

Nice review overall. As someone who owns both cars (my wife's car is a blue 330i M Sport much like the one in the video, and I have an IS 350 F Sport), I always gravitate more to the Lexus because it rides a lot better than the BMW and sounds better. Also, I must say the AWD car is quite a shame due to the 6-speed auto. The 8-speed in the RWD car I have is much more modern.

  • @DUYVU-mi3uk

Wait, a 330 is faster 0-60 than the V6 Lexus? I'm here looking for the m340 and IS F Sport comparison I6 vs V6 lol.
I like the IS design, it make the car look small and agile. Though the interior is a bit old. The touch screen isn't integrated into the dash, and feel like an afterthought add on (similar to the old BMW 328). Though vented seat being an option is a huge plus. And overall pretty comfortable car.
BMW is sportier and stiffer even in comfort mode. Very clean, no nonsense interior. While not as comfortable as the Lexus, the stiffer ride give It more sporty feels. Way more responsive in sport+, and relatively comfortable in comfort. Especially the M340, put a smile on my face every time I punch it. And still getting almost 31mpg ave thanks to the standard mild hybrid system (granted premium gas :| ) . If you prioritize sporty over comfort, go for the Bimmer.
Honestly, buyers should be aware of the total cost of ownership of these cars. BMW will definitely more expensive in the long run. If you can't shoulder, or want to deal with that cost, you probably should not get the BMW. I got the BMW fully aware that I will probably part with it way sooner lol. But I love it.

    The Lexus all day long!!

I just drove the 330i for four days. That four cylinder turbo is fast. However, seats and suspension set up too firm for my taste. Fake sounds don’t do it for me. The 330i is a big, beefy car. Reminds me of an American muscle car strangely enough. For a long drive, I would not take the Beemer.

Even with new car warranties nowadays reliability does matter for me. In general there are a lot less auto mechanics in business and servicing a car for repairs is a hassle where you have to make an appointment several days in advance. Supply chain issues for parts pop up and if we go into a world wide depression in an apocalyptic scenario you want a dependable car whereas a European car breaking down with costly repairs and parts supply issues could be a nightmare. Lexus/Toyota is basically a US company to a degree, its really not a foreign company at this point. Most people drive mostly in city conditions where even on the highway they never push the car anywhere to the limit. Most people would never race a 1/4 mile even by themselves all alone for fun. Most people will never drive their car faster than 75 mph even on the highway.

Most people buying cars don't really know much about cars, of course you are going to choose the faster vehicle with a big discount(can't sell them any other way) when you don't value a better quality interior and ride.

Every where I go I see BMW , the only feelings I get is “sadness” the amount of money a man can spend to it is limitless , who wants the car that made to sit in the shop not where you want it to go ? BMW is notorious for shop time sitting ? And they’ll happy to charge you for it ? 😂😂😂

To be honest in my opinion....never considered the reliability of a car till now and would never as a character for a car being a luxury enthusiast.. always bought cars with technology performance safety and comfort for a car .infact owned range rovers explorers audis and everything front vw group and had no issues with it after 10+ years .
But out of these 2 I'll give it to the lexus as it has atleast reliability as a characteristic while bmw has nothing.....etc in oil ..my uncle bought one and regrets it ...bought a lexus because he was angry with the service issues with engines. Tbh he say it's a kinda upscaled Toyota but atleast services are smooth

Infotainment may be a gen behind in the IS, but that Mark Levison audio will blow away whatever BMW is using these days. (Harman Kardon?) I'm not one of those people who fiddle around with the infotainment while driving (and wont buy a car that buries basic everyday functions in the touchscreen) so that part really doesnt matter much to me.

    • @mharro88
      @mharro88 ปีที่แล้ว
