  • We stayed in 4 Sydney Place, Bath. Join us as we seek any clues to the former famous resident. What will we find?
Although, this house looks like many other houses in Bath, it has a claim to fame. A national icon lived here not long after it was built. Have you guessed who? It was Jane Austen. Her family took the lease in 1801 and lived here for 4 years.
Jane Austen is a novelist and although she was published in her lifetime, she did not make a fortune from her work. In fact, her name was not printed in her books until after her death. Her stories have endured over the past two centuries to become among the most successful romantic novels of the period with over 30 million copies sold worldwide. Pride and Prejudice accounts for 20 million of those sales (wordsrated.com).
We also enjoy a visit to the Jane Austen Centre, 40 Gay Street Bath to discover if the experience is worth it?
Later in the video we will search for some of the other houses Jane lived in and explore Syndey Gardens where she was said to find inspiration for some of her novels.

    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
    Sarah and Andrew
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Hi Sarah and Andrew. This was quite a surreal experience for me. Why? Because I used to live in the first floor flat at 3 Sydney Place and I never expected to see it on Cornish Walking Trails! It seems strange to see you standing on the steps right next to the ones I used every day. The owners of Number 4 must have invested a huge amount of money in renovating the property, and they have done a really great job.
It's a pity you couldn't get to see one of the upper flats. The rooms in mine were huge and still had much of the original ornate plaster-work, doors and shutters on the windows. The ceilings were at least 12 feet high and it was a devil to keep the rooms warm in the winter. Sydney Gardens is a lovely relaxing place and looks beautiful when all the trees are in leaf and the flowers are out.
I don't want to spoil your future episodes so I won't say any more, except that I hope you had time to walk out of the city along the canal path and found the lovely watering hole/restaurant beside the canal.
Thanks for a lovely, nostalgic experience 👍

It seemed that the ground floor in 4 Sydney Place had been converted to a single apartment and we heard a young child quite often. It made us wonder how many of the houses are still complete, very few I imagine!
A Bath expert! Gosh! I hope we do well with the next video! Sarah :)

Hi Sarah. I'd say you're right. My information is very old - it was 25 years ago when I left Bath - but even then most of the properties were divided up into apartments. You'd need to be a very wealthy person to pay for the
upkeep of such a large, old building, even if you could afford to buy it.
BTW the original plan was to build similar houses on all four sides of the gardens (like Queen's Square) but the builder ran out of money and it was never completed.@@CornishWalkingTrails

Lovely video Sarah & Andrew. Bath is a real gem. Only been there once in the late 70s, and thoroughly enjoyed it (I notice daytime traffic has increased tenfold since then!) It looks like you had a fabulous stay. The apartment looked quite quirky...I think I might have to dim the lights a little in the evenings to cope with the eclecticism :) Fantastic to see the original sash-window shutters still in place. It must have felt quite uncanny that the wonderful Jane Austen moved about in the same space over 200yrs ago. Just love Georgian architecture ~ some is quite eccentric with nooks & crannies, and some wonderfully classically symmetrical. Royal Crescent is just amazing. Food looked amazing! Really good tour ~ thank you both :)

We sometimes, in better weather, take the bus over to Bath. Get off at Victoria Gardens and walk through the park or the streets behind the park to the shops. Many years Dad's relatives had an umbrella shop in the Abbey Precinct, opposite the pump rooms. Its now a jewellers.

Really pleased that you chose Bath for your first road trip. I was lucky enough to spend most of my day delivering around this beautiful city in the 10 years before retiring. There is so much more to Bath than Jane Austen as I hope your future videos will show viewers. Bath stone gives the city a golden glow in daylight, best seen from the NT skyline walk. Looking forward to the rest of your stay in Aquae Sulis.

Have been to Bath a few times, but the last time we visited, it wasn't a very good experience. It was just after Christmas and it was snowing and we parked in the street outside the hotel. The seagulls on the roofs kept us awake all night and when we got to the car in the morning, it was covered in snow. As we cleared the windscreen, we discovered a parking ticket. When we went to park up the night before, the roads were covered in snow and we didn't see the double yellow lines. Hope you enjoyed your visit to Bath.

The B & B decor was certainly eclectic, but I need to remember the UK has too many historic buildings to keep them all as museums, lol. Fun to see the Jane Austen Center, and visit the various places where she lived. The wax figure was fascinating, especially since there are no photos or 'official' portraits of her. A nice little change from your usual Cornwall jaunts. I loved the detailed look at the Bath Vauxhall and it's history. I must have been 14 when I read my first Barbara Cartland Regency romance and heard the term. I like that you got out to film the gardens and the night view of the Crescent. Interesting to read comments from folks who lived there. Cheers! P.S. I have a friend who restores vintage VWs, specializing in Karman Ghias, though I imagine it would be too pricey to have one shipped from California. ;)

As I only knew she wrote wonderful books which includes my favourite TV programme Pride and Prejudice with Colin Firth and the Lost in Austin one.I have read a few of her books which are great and seen the films, not all the films do justice to her I admit but still great to watch.

I'm afraid that although I enjoyed watching this and learning more about Bath, for me it's just another tourist video. So I was very pleased when towards the end you gave your assurance that you would continue exploring Cornwall. All your Cornwall stories, perhaps especially the historical content from old books, have brought back such good memories of living there and re-visiting since. They certainly encourage me to return and find further walks for myself. I can understand why content providers need to expand their horizons, but please do return to Cornwall as often as you can.
(P.S. I always like to see your dogs enjoying themselves too).

They showed me a lot of things in Bath but we didn't explore the history of Jane Austen so I am glad you did it now. But we had lunch in Sydney Garden one day 😊 And we enjoyed a walking comedy show in the evening.
