Is it worth visiting BATH, UK? Using a 1940s TOURIST GUIDE

  • With a 1940s Wardlock Red Tourist Guide we explore the regency city of Bath. The guide contains all sorts of information about the main tourists spots in Bath and we wanted to see if much has changed in the last 80 years.
We take a detailed look at some of the incredible buildings which Bath is famous for including The Circus, Royal Crescent, and Roman Baths, but we also find the lost and hidden gems in the city, including ghost signs, a secret garden and track down the address from which the first ever postage stamp in the world, the Penny Black, was sent on 2nd May 1840.
Is there a link to Cornwall? Yes, indeeed! We learn of two famous Cornishmen, Ralph Allen and Dr William Oliver who were instrumental in the development and success of this truly great English city.
    The standard description bit…
We are Sarah and Andrew and we film our walks around Cornwall and publish on TH-cam, usually weekly. Sometimes we stay in accommodation in Cornwall and upload our vlog. Sarah is fascinated by sea glass and likes to collect it so there may be the occasional sea glass video too. The channel is a hobby and we both have normal day jobs!
Unfortunately we cannot answer comments coming in more than a week after the publishing date of the video.
    Frequently asked questions:
    Do we do meet ups?
We regularly receive requests to meet up from viewers and subscribers, but unfortunately we do not have availability to be able to do this.
The channel is a very time consuming hobby, fitted around our employment and family commitments. Setting aside time for meet ups, means that we are not able to film and edit our weekly videos that you love to watch.
If you happen to bump into us while out and about, we will be more than happy to have a quick chat!
    Sarah and Andrew
    What camera do we use?
Since December 2018 we have used: Canon Powershot G7x MkII
How do I find the books you use?
Most are still in print although some we pick up in charity shops and may be available on Amazon secondhand. Please refer to the video for the book titles. Every video shows the book three times. Sorry but we can’t put a link in every description.
Best time of year to visit Cornwall?
We love May, June for flora and fauna, July and September for spectacular scenery.
    What is your dog’s name?
Sorry but we do not release the name of our dog, perhaps you can make up your own name for him.

Excellent video CWT, I'm lucky enough to have Bath as my local city, I live about 6 miles away, but I must admit I feel ashamed that I've never really explored it! I guess when it's on your doorstep you tend to take these things for granted, but your sterling work has spurred me to get off my backside, buy a guide book and get stuck in. Thank you.

To Bath the Cornish come, and enjoy the Sally Lunn. The Circus is grand, Greek columns they stand. At Pultenay Weir waters run. 🙂🏛🌳

As much as I really enjoy your video’s of Cornwall it has been lovely to look at Bath for a change. Your books bring the past to life and a wonderfully relaxed view of the past intertwined with the present. Well done Sarah on another brilliant edit - looking forward to the next episode. Thank you.

Hello Sarah & Andrew, Bath is one of the most regal Cities I have visited, although as you pointed out the rear of the “Royal Crescent” properties leaves much to be desired, they are quite an eye saw as my sister and I found out when exploring the gardens, I have to agree with Andrew “The Circle” is much more impressive with its beautiful architecture, I have really enjoyed tracing my steps with you from all those years ago, how time flies it seems like only yesterday that I was admiring the City of ‘Bath’ thank you 🙏 and take care until next time 🥰🤗

Hi Sarah and Andrew, thanks for another nostalgic (for me) walk around Bath. I have learned something new, and that is the existence of the gravel walk and the Georgian Garden. Somewhere I never knew about during my time in Bath (actually I never visited the Roman Baths either until after I had moved away!!).
I can help with the 'Penny Black' story. The building that you searched for in Broad Street was in fact the original post office in Bath (1822-1854), then it was moved to the building on the corner, which you also showed in the video (I was sad to see that this too has now closed, as I often went in there). This being the case, the first penny black stamp would have been sent from the Broad Street building.
I remember it in later years as the Bath Postal Museum. It had an amazing collection of information and artifacts. It remained in existence for 44 years at this, and other locations, until the lease expired in 2023. Wikipedia has all the details under 'Bath Postal Museum'. Thanks again for all the time and hard work you put into this channel - Robert 👏

Lovely to see these highlights of Bath close up, with your usual enjoyable commentary. It seems you can't walk 20 ft in that city without coming across a plaque noting a famous person. Sir Frederick Leighton was a painter during the Pre-Rafaelite period, thus I have framed prints of two of his paintings on my walls. At University, in Art History class, I learned a little trick for identifying the capitals of columns; Doric are plain, Ionic look like a curled scroll has been draped over the top, and Corinthian have acanthus leaves. That's not to say some architects haven't created mash-ups of the styles. Neo-Classical and Neo-Classical Revival civic buildings and grand homes can be found across the U.S., though few have such a grand pedigree as those in Bath. It was nice to have a change of scenery, but I'm sure the doggies will be overjoyed to see you return home. :)

I always love visiting Bath....never get tired of it, and always find more of interest each visit.
The famous Bath Oliver biscuit (now recently lost) came from here (Dr William Oliver) and the Chocolate Oliver - Yummy.
I remember being told on an open deck bus tour of the City, that Georgian Bath is 20 foot higher than Bath (sitting by the banks of the Avon) used to be located.....Imagine that raising an entire city! Today, we cant even fix a pothole.

It was exciting to explore somewhere new and learn more about this beautiful city, and we read about the Bath Oliver. Apparently Bath Buns were making Dr Oliver’s patients overweight so he invented a biscuit. Adding chocolate sounds yummy! Sarah :)

We visited Bath at Christmas to visit the Christmas Market. Bath Abbey opens its doors for a free Christmas Shopper's carol service. We were lucky enough to join in with this after the doors opened, and we got caught up with the surge entering the Abbey. It was lovely to be able to sit down and rest our feet and sing some Carol's whilst taking in the amazing interior of the Abbey.

A Bath bun is a sweet roll topped with crushed sugar after baking and often has dried fruit in it. The Sally Lunn is like a giant tea cake. The Bath Bun is attributed to doctor William Oliver in the 18th century. He also invented the Bath Oliver biscuit for his rheumatic patients who found the bun too fattening. We know that Jane Austin ate them as she mentions them in one of her letters.
You could have tried Bath Chaps on your visit. Pork tongue rolled in pork cheek, baked and then rolled in breadcrumbs. Delicious apparently!!!

I'm so glad you enjoyed your Sally Lunn! We made the mistake of taking a couple of these back to Cornwall to have for our tea...a great mistake, they were horribly stale! I'm sure they are much better fresh.
Did you know that during WWII the Germans tried to blow up The Circus? Fortunately, the bomb landed in the grass at the centre, so none of the beautiful buildings were destroyed, there was some damage but nothing that could not be repaired.

      Many thanks for your feedback.
TH-cam is a free platform. It is free for you to watch or not, as you wish. We are creatively free to make videos of our choosing.
To my knowledge you are not a patron or TH-cam member, if you are then by all means email us.
In previous videos we have signposted that we are making vlogs outside of the County, so you should have been aware. The people that have watched this video have enjoyed our trip around Bath.
After more than 7 years on TH-cam, we have a huge, free back catalogue of over 300 hundred videos about Cornwall. Perhaps you can find something that will satisfy you.
Or maybe you would prefer to find a channel that is exclusively, and wholly about Cornwall and absolutely nothing else. Also, there are plenty of webcams on the internet showing Cornish harbours, etc.
Sarcasm and shouting our name at us though, is just upsetting. It bewilders me how you can be rude about something that is free for you to watch. Please be aware that if we receive any more comments in a similar vein, I will report you and block you from commenting.
