To me, the "AVP" movies are canonical, despite what people say about "Prometheus" and "Alien: Covenant" contradicting them. I don't see them as contradicting the "AVP" films. Charles Bishop Weyland could easily be established as being Peter Weyland's uncle, and Charles's company could easily be established as being a precursor to Peter's company. Ridley Scott needs to be kept far away from "Alien: Awakening".

Don't forget that it took about ten years between the first hint of a crossover (the Xenomorph skull at the end of Predator 2) and this movie to come out.
I always thought that was incredibly well done. While some parts of the movie came off as under tight budget restrictions that third act is very well done. All of the fight sequences seemed incredibly polished, just a shame a little more care had been given to the opening story and characters, we could have had a bit of a cult classic.
@@Mrtwistedblack it still a cult classic in my eyes we can say AVP is better than The Predator and Predators (2010) cuz those stupid super Predators were so corny 🙄
I think it’s the best part of the movie all the annoying humans are killed off they stop with all the exposition and instead using body Language to communicate.
The fact that the Yautja record and play back human voice lines shows that they have some understanding of the English language (or other Earth languages). Since they can’t replicate certain sounds due to their mouth structure, they have to rely on the recorded lines. Perhaps the understanding of human languages was developed over time along with their periodic trips to Earth.
They do. They are advanced enough that they even have sophisticated translating software, as seen at the end of _The Predator,_ when the big one uses it to communicate in English.
They can communicate with their mouths. In the first Predator film, it mimicked Dutch when he asked it "What are you?" and it spoke to him. Predator 2 also had the Predator speak to Harrigan saying " Shit Happens." Both films show that they can speak human language without their masks. Its just the masks helps them understand fully what humans are saying, translating words into their own language.
I actually prefer them communicating with signals rather than dialogue. I thought that was really great! Just to show words aren't the only way to communicate.
wow so it wasnt Pauls decision rather it was Fox all along smh shame I hate when studios want to interfere with a directors vision that should be made to be illegal smh!!!! 🤬🤬
Thanks for a great video. Sci-fi rarely gives us such an interesting and unlikely partnership as when Lex and Scar team up together. In the final fight scene, when we think all is lost, and then a recovered Scar comes leaping through the air, spear in hand, is one of my all-time favourite sci-fi moments...
Thank you for the video, I enjoyed to the deeper look into the budding friendship between Lex and Scar. It made his death and the honoring of her into his clan more memorable!
*Supposedly* there was a scene where scar beckoned lex to come over while he was holding a xenomorph head. As she got close, he *some how* activated the aliens inner mouth and scared lex proving the predators have a sense of humor.
The director apparently had intended this. There was supposed to be a romance between Scar and Lex. For some reason they changed this (probably because they thought people wouldn't like that). But the undertones are still there.
@OAnalista-l9g Yep. It was in the script at one point where we would get more scenes between Scar and Lex with romantic undertones. This was carried over into the AVP novelization where some scenes from the movie are slightly different but there is WAAAAY more obvious romance between the characters. There's a scenario in the book where Lex watches Scar temporarily undress ( due to acid from an Alien landing on his armor), Scar actually puts more Alien shell armor onto Lex, she touches him and reacts to her touch, he carries her while they were running, etc.

oh i watched this movie just this monday! loved it so much! glad lex and scar's relationship was a bit more explored in the original, these two were very interesting together! Thanks for the explanations and the video :)
I vividly remember the backlash in 2004, people yelling how out of character it was for a Predator to cooperate with its prey. I have always pointed out that the Predator from the first film also gave Dutch a fair chance to defend himself, in recognition of Dutch' battle skills. Scar considered Lex an equal of sorts, because she managed to kill the Alien that snuck up and nearly killed him. Felt pretty naturally to me, and apparently, to lots of others here as well. Didn't care much for the fake CGI blood in the unrated edition, but I did like the other additions, like the scene where Verheyden scolds Miller, or where they discover the mummified Facehugger. Definitely would love to see the scenes where Scar "talks" to Lex, especially the description of his death scene where he says "The enemy of the enemy is my friend to her" gave me goosebumps. Would have confirmed what is implied in the other movies, that Predators understand more about humans than we think. BTW It was my understanding that the movie was always intended to be PG-13, not cut back later on studio orders. The fact that the unrated version only contains added blood but barely any extra scenes of violence (except for a more explicit stabbing of Weyland, if memory serves) kind of implies that no R-rated stuff was shot, right? I don't know what Anderson has since said about the studio and the PG-13 rating, but it sounds like a decision he initially agreed to, and regretted afterwards. He had sort of the same feeling about deleting a lot of the violent stuff from Event Horizon as well.

Just like The Thing and Alien, the premise of a distress signal, gravitational anomaly, mysterious heat bloom under Antarctica etc luring people to check out whatever it is before discovering it's something terrible, REALLY interests me. That's why I like the beginning of AvP so much as well as, the beginnings of Alien and The Thing being my favorite part in those as well.
Duuuuude, imagine a The Thing vs Alien vs Predator crossover. That shit would be TERRIFYING. Although I think The Thing would avoid the Aliens as they have acid for blood. But it would be interesting to see how a Predator would fair against it.
Anderson actually got the original AvP artist, Phil Norwood to do the storyboards for the movie. He also got the same guy who pushed the eggs out of the queen in Aliens to do the same in AvP. He was very dedicated to the project. I would absolutely love to see a new directors cut. And more so, those storyboards as well.
I like the Predator Franchise as a whole. The Predator Movie Series as well as the AvP Thing. I always liked when Human and Predator work together in order to overcome a powerful enemy, like in this case when Lex Woods kills a Xenomorph with Scar's Combistick. And she got blooded for that, which is considered a great honor.
The mythology of this franchise is amazing, the movie should have been Apocalypto with Aliens and Predators using the Weyland dig as a framing device discovering the narrative but telling the events in real time flashbacks! Leading then to a sequel with a modern day 'Hunt' having history repeat itself and the protagonists caught up in the AVP coming of age ritual vs the Xenomorph! How cool would that have been?!
@@S-T-E-V-E Totally agree. I liked AVP but I kept re-watchibg the ritual scenes and thinking why didnt they go deeper in this direction. It could even link in historically with the Amazon Jungles and why the Predator was there for Pred.1 if they wanted to. A wasted opportunity to revitalize the property .
This is just my opinion but I found Scar and Lex’s team up at the end of the movie so cool and left me wishing we got to see more of it. I think it would be so cool if we got a movie/series or whatever where the human and Predator team up and get a chance to understand the other more, being in communication, culture and so on. Just getting a chance to see that would be a very interesting concept.
I would be up for this. Maybe have a similar situation with Ahab when he handcuffed a man to him in order to hunt down a prey he was after and the man knew where it was.
I love this movie. I know it's really weak in a lot of areas, but it's a crossover that's essentially ten years in the making and I was super excited to see it. I was happy with the results, despite its shortcomings and it's just a fun movie all around. They pulled a lot of the best ideas out of the comics to make it work too and I really wish they'd done more to build off that with the sequel (which was just all around awful outside of a few minor things).
I would love to see a new version with missing footage. This movie is the only AVP that hold any water. The acting was stronger than the others. It actually had me emotionally invested through most of it, actually got my heart racing. They used the lore of the alien life cycle well in the story. Modeling the human, predator pairing like Naguchi and Broken Tusk worked well. Overall I liked it and have watched it several times unlike the other AVP entries that I have not watched even a second time.
Still to this day a decent Avp movie with throwbacks to the darkhorse comics. Reviews of this movie only always keep stating "why are there no space marines?" "Why is the setting on present day earth"? "Why is the interior of a predator ship looklike from a startrek"?. It seems like movie reviewers set their expectations too high enough that if a movie did not impress them or meet their expectations their gonna say "its a bad movie". Its like pushing their opinion on to others so the masses will agree.
Me and my modelmaking buddies made a short AvP film back in 2003. I made the pred mask, a mate made an alien egg, another did a facehugger. I learnt how to edit on Adobe Premiere non-stop for a week. Totally inspired by the idea of AvP...we were all super-syked for the film...then it was released, as like a f'kin 12A or summin. The only adult-like content was the apparent sexual tension between her and the pred...which also doubled as one of the best bits of the film. Mixed feelings indeed.
An underrated film, even if it isn't canon in the Alien and Predator universe. Some of the scenes of Predator speaking is fine without dialogue, but perhaps they must let in the cut the phrase "the enemy of my enemy is my friend" as saying goodbye to Lex.
The AvP films are canon. You can look it up and they are still canon. Just some fans treat it like it isn't. Sure you've got directors who try to change timelines but it still came before those films so its the correct timeline.
I have fond memories of Solain Rhyo's "Sacrifice Theory" series, even though they have a tendency to be repetetive with a couple of phrases and having a whole bunch of other abandoned WIPs.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS !!!! Finally someone to make this comparison . No one I know there’s a compare the two storylines but I knew the door something very similar to this movie from the original comics . I absolutely enjoyed this video and I thank you for speaking on this topic.
I went and saw AVP the day it came out. There were two of us in the theater. One scene that I recall, that I have not seen since, when the pyramid blows and the big explosion happens while Lex and Scar are standing there “Grids head drops right near them and they do a close up of where the Celtic predators net did its work.” I have only seen that the one time in the theater and not in any of the DVD releases.
Video idea: What does the Predator breathe? Based on the movies, it's pretty clear that the Predator can breathe in Earth's atmosphere for at least some time, given that it removes its mask in Predator 1 and Predator 2. But in Predator 2 it appears to need to occasionally breathe from some sort of rebreather. And whenever it removes it's mask, it disconnects hoses that immediately spray some sort of gas, and it sounds like there's an air-tight seal being broken, suggesting that the mask is more than just armor and a augmented vision, but something to help it breathe. I vaguely remember reading something in the comics or novels about how the Predator needs air that is almost but not quite the same composition as Earth's, and so it couldn't breathe Earth air indefinitely. It'd be interesting to see what you can dig up from the extended universe on this part of Predator biology. Actually, while you're at it, you could also look into why the Predator's blood glows neon green.
Yeah, I think they have higher oxygen intake than we do. Which could explain their larger size ( we also don't know how big a Yautja can get. I think the biggest I know is 12 ft. Females are even larger.) I think the reason the City Hunter had a breathing apparatus without the helmet was due to the smog of LA. Perhaps they breathe cleaner air than us considering how polluted our air is.
One of my favorite TH-cam channels ☺️ hope you can make a video of how the Engineers story was taken too far being the creators and ruined the alien franchise 😣
me too I also love AVP requiem despite the terrible lighting I already got used to it and can see whats actually happening but god is Wolf so badass and legendary
u know whats also neat that no one talks about ? how the only two respected humans from the Predators are a Black Man and a Black Woman the only ones who the Predator honor that should tell you right there 😌😌
Nope, you're not alone. Interestingly enough yautja have a rather big fandom and pool of romantic fanworks, many of them for Scar and Lex. I'm kinda sad that a lot of it is just xeno, pregnancy and female submissive porn. There's so much potential worldbuilding there and most of the stories are the same. (The oddest, most interesting, one I found yet (that's M/F) was about a human lady managing an old peoples home for yautja ancients, and getting it on with a few of the guarding & science males over time. It was pretty interesting because it explored culteral aspects like ageing, family relationships, morals, matriarchal society etc.)
@@benderbendingrodriguez420 well that's because all they added was a splash of blood hoping the ratings bump would boost sales and if not point go 'see! It doesnt matter keep with pg13' instead of taking advantage of what a ratings bump could give them in story potential of body horror reproduction cenokorphs vs literal headhunting alien trophy hunters.
i remember highly enjoying this movie when it first came out and i still think it fits with the lore of the Yautja today.. i hope the next Predator movie's stay true to the lore of the Yautja.. it would be very sad if they went the way of Star Wars by Changing the lore too much.. Predator Movies have a simple formula the Hunt begins Trophies are collected and the Hunt Ends with the Yautja despairing back to space.. id also like to see a movie where the humans don't get the upper hand on them.. i mean they aren't scary if they keep loosing.. i just don't think if one of these guy's or gal's came to earth that we could win in a fight..
@@AlienTheory I especially liked the AvP2 PC game. They _really_ knew how to give it a dark, frightening atmosphere. And the story narrative was great, including all the little tidbits you could learn by reading papers, pads, and computer terminals.
I would gladly buy a directors cut, I enjoyed the movie for what the message was. I thought it could've been more involved and some more depth to the scar build up but over all it was better than the sequel and better than alien resurrection. Flaws and all it was over all a good movie.
Vassals they occasionally hunt for sport I would expect. Perhaps choosing the strongest humans to serve as prey every few years when a new generation of young Predators need to be blooded.
Every time I hear about the predator universe I can't help but imagine the last atrocity of a film. There is such a big lore and ways and technology these days to make an absolutely amazing movie and instead we got The predator (2018).

I love Scar and Lex relationship.
I want to be in a yauja clan
@@jakethenecromorph 👍
Anderson actually got the original AvP artist, Phil Norwood to do the storyboards for the movie. He also got the same guy who pushed the eggs out of the queen in Aliens to do the same in AvP. He was very dedicated to the project.
I would absolutely love to see a new directors cut. And more so, those storyboards as well.
I love the romance!
me too, i think it’s very cute as it is odd💗
That short "Apocalypto" flashback was great i.m.o. I would have loved to have seen more from that timeline. I'm fascinated by Aztec and Inca history.
@@gavalar7485 Yeah that's what I was saying the flashbacks ae the best part of the movie, I wish they had made the movie about the ancient ritual!!
Apocalypto, sir!
@@MeelatchiDaibukti lol Very Specific, but I'm buyin what you're sellin!
I would love to see lex and Dutch team up
thoroughly enjoyed it, it gave me hope for AVP2, how nieve was I. The directors cut adds a new dimension but anything added makes me giddy.
AVP is one of the best in both series. .always loved it...
I personally loved this movie and growing up was one of my favorites my two favorite creatures in one movie
I really liked this flick. Would love to see a full version with all the cut scenes in it.
Same here.
Its like pushing their opinion on to
others so the masses will agree.
Excellent video. I love the first AVP movie and enjoy any (positive) videos on it.
I think a directors cut would be very good to see! I always liked the first AvP.
The AvP movie is deeply flawed, but it's way more fun and well-made than Requiem, and I've always appreciated the clear nods to the original comics.
Sanaa Lathan was very underrated in this movie.
Highly underrated film, enjoyed it.
same also enjoyed the second one that Wolf Predator was such a badass bro how he wipe down entire hordes of xenomorphs
@@adriel88_ , agreement with you. Also, AVP Movies will possibly get rebooted in 2023
Me and my modelmaking buddies made a short AvP film back in 2003.
I personally thought this was a good film well worthy of a part two
I think a new all inclusive cut would be awesome!!!! This was a great if underrated movie!!!
I have seen this movie many times. This movie came like in 2004 maybe. And now you are breaking it down...wow.
I would definitely buy an extended cut. In 4K uhd.
I adore this movie
Who’s read the fanfic starring these two
Which two??
I have fond memories of Solain Rhyo's "Sacrifice Theory" series, even though they have a tendency to be repetetive with a couple of phrases and having a whole bunch of other abandoned WIPs.
I FUCKING LOVE THIS !!!! Finally someone to make this comparison . No one I know there’s a compare the two storylines but I knew the door something very similar to this movie from the original comics . I absolutely enjoyed this video and I thank you for speaking on this topic.
Sure I have a nostalgic feeling towards this film but I still consider it a fun popcorn flick.
AVP is AWESOME. I can watch it from any point just like Alien(s) and Predator 1&2!!!
me too I also love AVP requiem despite the terrible lighting I already got used to it and can see whats actually happening but god is Wolf so badass and legendary
u know whats also neat that no one talks about ? how the only two respected humans from the Predators are a Black Man and a Black Woman the only ones who the Predator honor that should tell you right there 😌😌
I remember at the end when he took of his mask, he gave her look like, " What?!" Lol
Also...I thought they were gonna kiss. Am I the only one?
id thinking i want them to kiss!! damn!!
@@merileopardisaksassa7030 yikessssss lol
No
Humans... always trying to kiss the space folks 😂
The original avp was pretty good, but hobbled by a pg13 rating.
Even the unrated cut isnt ecspecially nasty. Just more CG blood
The bulkiness of the Predators was kind of annoying as well. The best part of the sequel was the Predator who moved more traditionally.
I know there was supposed to be another scene with the Grid Alien where it gets blown up from the tunnel explosion.
Wonderful video-essay, as always!!!
Why did they cut all this cool character stuff? I would watch a new cut of AvP.
'Young Blood! Hunt with skill, or die with honor...'
Thanks for covering this. People really give this more flack than necessary.
Jesus, has it really been twenty years already?!
We need more novelization comparisons please
Yes please!! New cut!!
I think some sort of snow temple map would be great for Predator hunting grounds
I like this idea!
First AvP was awesome. Then it went downhill.
I believe if the Yautja was on Earth a little longer and trust "oomans" a little more, Yautja would actually speak English.
i remember highly enjoying this movie when it first came out and i still think it fits with the lore of the Yautja today.. i hope the next Predator movie's stay true to the lore of the Yautja.. it would be very sad if they went the way of Star Wars by Changing the lore too much..
I agree.
I have to admit that I have always liked AVP
Great video. I would love to hear you talk about the AvP first person shooters that came out in the early 2000s.
I should cover them for sure. Those games were my life in the early 2000s.
@@AlienTheory same. Do you have Avp2000 in Steam? I'm looking for people to play with.
@@AlienTheory I especially liked the AvP2 PC game. They _really_ knew how to give it a dark, frightening atmosphere. And the story narrative was great, including all the little tidbits you could learn by reading papers, pads, and computer terminals.
I liked this film. Would be very interested in seeing a proper cut of the film with dialogue included.
Same here.
I would gladly buy a directors cut, I enjoyed the movie for what the message was. I thought it could've been more involved and some more depth to the scar build up but over all it was better than the sequel and better than alien resurrection. Flaws and all it was over all a good movie.
I thought it was ok, but if missing footage is out there I wouldn't mind checking it out for sure! Bring it on..thnx man! 😎👍
I really like AVP and I'd be interested in a director's cut
So simply the Yautja wanted to use humanity as a vassal state at the beginning
Vassals they occasionally hunt for sport I would expect. Perhaps choosing the strongest humans to serve as prey every few years when a new generation of young Predators need to be blooded.
@@WASDLeftClick do they honor the humans if they emerge victorious thought
@@thedoruk6324,
Typically yes, unless they're bad blood.
Every time I hear about the predator universe I can't help but imagine the last atrocity of a film. There is such a big lore and ways and technology these days to make an absolutely amazing movie and instead we got The predator (2018).
I would love a directors cut of this film
AvP deserves to be a successful series. It annoys me that the only reason it’s not is because of greedy ass out of touch corporations.
I loved the theme of the pyramid and Antarctica setting. Sure there were some issues with underdeveloped characters, sped up alien breeding cycles, pacing issues, and a few more. But this movie is so much fun and I loved it growing up
Damn this was actually kinda cool!
Gotta be on my top 10 favorite movies~✨
Gotta say, i loved this movie as a child
They have a living queen. Just make a third one already. Rated R and lit properly
AVP is both a better Alien and Predator movies than the recent movie in either series.
Lex wasn’t really considered fair game for Scar to Kill anyway, it would’ve went against the Yautja code of honor. Once she said wait, submitted and gave him the weapon she wasn’t considered a threat.
i didnt mind it, ya a proper extreme edition would be cool
I love scar and Lex !!
Honestly my favorite film from both franchises
It'll be so badass to just have a piece of their tech just the helmet alone and the shoulder Cannon
I loved the idea of the movie. That's why I have a copy of it. Could they do better? Of course they can. However, I still enjoyed the movie and was excited to see it when it was first released.
