As a plumber I'm disappointed with products like these, you would think with over 100 years of innovation in the trade they would have something that was really permanent
I had a small piece of copper with a pin hole leak and I use this fusing tape and it didn't stop the leak entirely. I eventually replaced the area with pvc pipe and all is well. This most likely could work on a piece of copper pipe that was at least 8 inches long. My pipe was just not long enough to spread the tape out far enough. I had to use a razor to cut the tape and it did fuse nicely.
good idea in ideal situations for simple pin holes under 100 PSI. Ive been in maintenance for 12 years and i still have not seen anything that works faster, that is cheaper, better and as long lasting as any old chunk of rubber and any spare gear clamp you have in the tool box. If your pipe has pin holes its time to replace it anyways and you can retrieve your gear clamps when you re-pipe.
It worked, clear generic silicone tape, on a leaking oil cooler line that has up to 65psi of hot oil in it. It was leaking 1 quart every 200 to 300 miles and now it's leaking none. 350 miles later of mountain, Interstate, and town driving. Used 2 hours of time (half was cleaning hose) and a $7 10' roll of silicone tape that I wanted to test. Took about 30" of clear tape to do one end of the hose while on the car. I prefer the clear as it allows me to see through it. I developed a technique to do it in tight space. Gave it 3 overlapping layers in a different pattern. Straight wrap, diagonal, then straight again. Any pattern works but important to have different seal points of different wrapping and do it as tight as you can, with space provided. Also important to squeeze and rub firmly on it to get each layer to fuse for 5 minutes or so before the next layer and the final layer. If it's higher than 65psi I would also place single double wrapped pieces directly over the leak, for extra strength material before the first layer of the 3 wraps. Or wrap it 4 times.
This stuff is pretty good in the right environment. But as others have mentioned if you're working on your back under a sink or a bath than it would be near impossible to wrap the tape around a pipe like that.
The product is awesome, although I do not use it for a permanent solution. It helps for those late night calls to hold off the leak until the next day. Also works great on black iron piping in hydronic heating systems. Sometimes it is too cold out to drain the system and shut down the boiler. i have left the tape in this situation for 2 weeks with no issues at all.
Thanks, you saved my and my family a lot of time and bugs. Used electrical tape but until the professional comes it should be fine. Little advice: when I’m in this kind of panic situation and look for a video, the first thing I don’t want to hear is metal😂. Aside that great video!👍🏻
As a landlord I've fixed pipes with this stuff in very low clearance areas. The key is to pull it tight each time you wind it around. I love this stuff -- it's a landlord's best friend. Repaired one kitchen sink leak with this 4 years ago and it's still holding!!!
Pipes usually leak at the joints, like at an elbow. The tape did not work for me. Not even two rolls of it and it's expensive tape. Furthermore, if it's a hot water pipe, the tape will split from the heat.
autocrow correctly true, the hot water pipe to the whole building apartment, happen to cross pass inside my unit apartment walls and ceiling. The hot water pvc pipeline busted for the second time, but in a different location from the 1st (1.5m away) there was a kink plumber state, saying any bend to a pvc pipe even the slightest which isn't noticeable to the eyes can later caused huge damage. Like in my case. It was like a waterfall, something that belong outside in the nature I am now witnessing pouring from my laundry ceiling. Gushes of water couldn't be turned off in my unit mains.so it now clearly the whole units buildings hot water is runs pass part of my wall and ceiling. Point is, no tap will temp cover/fix that amount of water load that I saw ”waterfall” if only it was a natural outback feature piece that MEANT to be there.. But wasn't. Home Insurance fxukd me over as that night I was in process of renewing my home insurance-they picked up that I had a shop within the building apartment and denied the renewal(even tho they did insure me past 2years), only 2 hours later that the pipe busted. I Tried to say they should pay N I am entitled payout. But got denied. Scums they are..!
First...I am female madam or yourladyship would be more appropriate .. Second...u cut off a length of tape then cut more if requred...its not that complicated.
Heather Meyers Splendid your Ladyship. Thank you for you feedback. Alas! in the UK the water pressure is so high that random lengths threaded between the wall and united 'tuther side would not last a day. Thank you anyway, and have a lovely day
That piece being wrapped is a LOT LONGER than the piece that was cut. For the price of a roll of that stuff, I'd buy a couple of SharkBite (or other brand) push-to-fit plumbing fittings and a short piece of plastic or coppe pipe. I keep a few of those fittings around as well as some spare pipe for those "midnight' fixes.
No, I think its the same piece. It's stretchy. I know 3M has a self-adhesive tape I've used in the past, even under pressure for a car radiator hose. I believe they call it Mastic-tape. It's thick and rubbery on a backing strip just like this, and once it touches itself it binds instantly... no unwinding so get it right the first time. I also recall a silicone tape with the same "instant adhesive" properties so you can wrap a piece around a radiator hose and patch it without removing the hose. This stuff can be a life saver at the track or on road trips. I wouldn't reccomend it as a permanent fix though... better off replacing the pipe section in the long run. I really doubt a local inspector would think a pipe patched like this is up to code. ;-)
I have bought it. Tape is amazing but because of clearances issues, many many times it cannot be used. That's like in the infomercials, what they show it's the best of the situations. Reality is different, pipes seldom hang by themself with lots of room around it.
What is wrong with an oxy torch and silver solder? For a quick temporary fix a piece of scrap bicycle inner tube and a hose clamp works until you can get a plumber.
Hmmm..I wonder if I can do this with Coolant lines(Metal lines)? I just brought an whole hose assembly for my Ford Taurus, installed it and I guess due to some stress it has a very small crack and it now leaks. I'll have to buy some of this tape and see if it works.
Michael Norway Didn't work too well on the metal pipe that was leaking. Could be because of the pressure in the metal pipe or the heat..or both. It just dripped through the tape somehow.
wasnt tight enough. i have used this tape on high pressure truck water hoses from radiators. The video does not show how to do it correctly. You are meant to REALLY stretch the tape apply allot of pressure when you tape it up.
When would you have a pipe just running in the middle of the room with space on each side... pipes are always in awkward places right up next to the wall with little space to wrap anything tightly around it... good idea but not in the real world...
Will not be practical in a live situation,Is this for internal use only? The mains pipes in the UK can work at between 4 to 6 bar I know for a fact that it would not stop them.
I tried this tape on my garden holed. It did not work. The hose kept leaking even after double wrapping an area at least six inches on either side the the leak.

Well....... I fixed the toilet OVERFLOW pipe (small leak) FOUR YEARS ago with similar silicone tape. Still perfectly fine. Soil pipe may be a different ball game though.
Looks kind of low pressure I’ve tried it does not work. On our High pressure, copper lines. 80-120psi., pressure reducing valve definitely needed in our neck of the woods.
Eddie Rice , you obviously miss the reason for this taking longer. You must apply some stretching tension to the tape as you wrap, the wraps should overlap and then build up on both sides of leak before covering the hole. It's not duct tape, it has no adhesive per say, it adheres to itself by the stretching.
Took you two minutes and 50 feet of tape to fix that hole. most of these kinds of "Fixes" Are to stop water from running while you go get a replacement or turn of the main or whatever. Not meant for permanent fixes. and you could probably use alot less of another kind of tape.
Didn't like that camera cut away right as he was going over streaming pinhole and cut to the gauge and cut back not to be an asshole but could edit it wrap a different pipe then cut back I wouldn't write this if video didn't do that
That muzac is dreadful - why not have some mention of the tape's name - how tight to pull it, what to do when space is more restricted. Or just silence. anything but that inane din.
Who repair pipe like this if not for an emergency thing? But till must replace the pipe later. Don't think any insurance company will accept that kind of repair
Not for long, but you probably already discovered that. Brake lines are subjected to close to 1000PSI, far more than domestic water lines. ln addition, brake fluid acts as solvent on many plastics, most likely including whatever that tape is made of.
Not if you don’t have a solder gun and solder wire. I’m a gal - and I don’t know how to solder. This kind of tape is fast and SUPERB. love to see him do that on a pipe that is under a sink unit and mm from the wall
Yeah….me too Kevin….Lol.
That's what I'm going to have do later today. But all these "Self-Repair Silicone or FiberFix" tapes only show the Easy Repairs! Why?
The most dramatic piece of music ever to accompany a pipe repair.
Haha..
Too funny 🤣
I guess it's easy when you have that much room to work with.
lol
And not a 90 right in the elbow
The suspense is killing me: Is he going to cover that hole or not?
lol
+10 seconds about 20 x to see it
🤣
🤣
I kept thinking the Exact Same Thing! lol
As a plumber I'm disappointed with products like these, you would think with over 100 years of innovation in the trade they would have something that was really permanent
How about sealing rubber sleaves. Just tighten hose clamps over the leave to stop the leak?

Great deals of important information and the video is great.
I am bookmarking it for future reference and consultation. Many thanks for sharing! 🙂
The length of that one piece of tape kept growing and growing the more he wrapped it around the copper tubing.
Stretching

hahahaha totally bad music for someone panicking lol
I'd use this as a very temp fix, while I can go and get the necessary materials for a permanent fix.
yeah since when have you head 12" clearance around a leaking pipe to apply the tape?
exactly
pull the tape off the role to the desired length and cut it, then you can wrape it around anything....
When Im standing in My BAsement I seem to have alot of clearance
As a landlord I've fixed pipes with this stuff in very low clearance areas. The key is to pull it tight each time you wind it around. I love this stuff -- it's a landlord's best friend. Repaired one kitchen sink leak with this 4 years ago and it's still holding!!!

Same here!

Scums they are..!
Exactly what happened to me.
Try doing that with a pipe 1/4" from the wall or under a faucet!
I did...still holding on 6 months later :)
Heather Meyers How did you manage tethered the sticky tape between the wall and the pipe?
Grand day to you Sir.
First...I am female madam or yourladyship would be more appropriate ..

neogovernment you must have the most annoying faucet. It was done pretty easy for me
Nice cut-a-way at the moment of truth. 2:05 The music is like being slapped in the face over, and over, and over.
hbofbyu1 Dry that pipe section then observe it for a few minutes.

really stretchy
+Arron Somerville Does heat gunning the tape help with the layer bonding and durability? Speaking about rubber based self-adhesive tape.
I wouldn't heat gun it unless you're experimenting.

I'm a plumber working at 4 am
Heating pipe leaking , tape saved my """""" !!

What is wrong with an oxy torch and silver solder? For a quick temporary fix a piece of scrap bicycle inner tube and a hose clamp works until you can get a plumber.
One can use rubber tape ...cheaper and works better. also you can use a hose clamp over it.
Could you just stick a self taping screw in it until you work out how to shut it off?
Easy when used on straight pipe!
How about at pipe joints or an elbow?
Why do you use 5 ft of tape for a tiny hole????
Could I use this on an elbow joint? Or dies it have to b a straight pipe?
can it be used on steam pipe (hot)? how high temperature can it stand?
bamboo. tape very good. I've fumingg bunny lung deck from funk going by funk find drunk home going ec bamboo. love it. so much.
It's great tape. I am also looking for such tape for my clients to repair water, oil, gas pipes to stop leakage before applying our fiberglass tape.
very nice video, thanks for sharing. would you please tell me where to get this tape?
Nice vid . Thanks
Nice Video but you don't mention the BRAND NAME or a LINK for the actual tape you used... That would have been useful!

Michael Norway
Didn't work too well on the metal pipe that was leaking. Could be because of the pressure in the metal pipe or the heat..or both.

wasnt tight enough. i have used this tape on high pressure truck water hoses from radiators. The video does not show how to do it correctly. You are meant to REALLY stretch the tape apply allot of pressure when you tape it up.
was this temporary/emergency? did it work? if so how long did it last? needs to be stretched to half its width like the instruction say..
Is this any different to standard ptfe tape? I've got a leaky shower hose.
Good Tape, High Pressure Waterproof Self Adhesive Tape
When would you have a pipe just running in the middle of the room with space on each side... pipes are always in awkward places right up next to the wall with little space to wrap anything tightly around it... good idea but not in the real world...
I don't know, mine are pretty out in the open and easy to do. Nice try though for being a dick. But this would work perfectly for mine.
@@RShak Well, you're the exception.
So nice very nice
did i miss the name of the tape ????
The best fix is sweating method or Shark Bite connector for people who don't like or not comfortable sweating pipes.
Can you use the tape for rubber pipes
The dumb duck don't speak so it prolly don't read or write either.
Will not be practical in a live situation,Is this for internal use only?
The mains pipes in the UK can work at between 4 to 6 bar I know for a fact that it would not stop them.
Great video Thanks !!!!!!!!!
What is the tapes name, How much it costs?
And how long it will hold water leak without high pressure?
Video requires editing. But looks like a good product.
WHy are you wasting so much tape!
Because the more you use the more they sell.
I tried this tape on my garden holed. It did not work. The hose kept leaking even after double wrapping an area at least six inches on either side the the leak.
Why would you work past the hole on the first pass, and come back again.
Ya tape kha sa mala g or ktna ke mala ge
Why'd I not yet think to use 'cherry tape' for this?!
Navy aviation maintenance uses this for wire repairs instead of electrical tape
Hose clamp, piece of rubber. Cost 67 cents.

Gas? Crikey! Turn off, ventilate or get out, and call (in UK) 0800 111 999.
Noooooo!! I agree with Maurice here.
Has anyone fixed a toilet soil pipe leak with this tape. Are there any good youtube videos out there showing this?

Self amalgamating tape, when used for leaks is a band-aid, not a repair.
Good idea but I don’t think it works. Coz I have tried it.
COOL
wouldn't it be easier to solder it?
Not if you don’t have a solder gun and solder wire. I’m a gal - and I don’t know how to solder. This kind of tape is fast and SUPERB. Used it on a slowly leaking non pressure pipe (my 1” toilet overflow down pipe). Its been taped for 4 years. Check it every month. Dry as a bone and looks like new, e,g, how it did when I applied it.

thank you!
