Most vet acft mech calls this stuff F-4 tape. The red is high heat while the black is for normal use. The color line in the middle of the tape is a guide on wrapping. After one wrap the overlap corner should follow the line. DO NOT allow dust and dirt get on the F-4 tape because it will not stick together very well. F-4 tape is some GREAT STUFF!!!!
We use it in TV engineering too. We call it "Tommy Tape." I've used it to repair Triax cable that's been drug through mud, puddles and wet grass...works incredibly! I keep a roll of this stuff in my race car as well.
@@cefb8923 you know I think it’s one of those examples where a repair is stronger than the original part. Silicon‘s pretty tough stuff no more rubber hoses not so much.
I just want to say that I really appreciate your videos. They are by far the best at explaining various parts of building things on a plane or how things work and showing with clear video what parts go where or do what. Some other video's show things so close I can't tell where on the plane they are talking about, or the video is so far away that I can't see clearly what it is they are doing. You're probably going to want to put a zip-tie on the finished end (3:17) because the tension will often cause the end of the tape to separate. Great stuff though, and it is used in quite often in commercial aircraft maintenance.
Thanks. I had someone suggest this tape to cover some exposed electrical wires on the outside deck of my sailboat. I wasn't sure F4 would work since I had no experience with it. Watching this video, I'm pretty sure F4 is exactly what I need for the job.

Wrap with the blue line outwards and overlap the line so it’s not showing. That looks to be a tapered tape. It’s meant to overlape into a smooth layer.
I'm thinking perhaps you applied the tape upside down because that blue line down the center is supposed to be a visual guide to help you efficiently wrap the product and use the minimal amount of material for the job as well as probably to be more consistent so you get predictable thermal characteristics across the installation.
Hi, how would you install a fuel hose with fire sleeve, this silicon tape and a clamp? where would you place the clamp, on the fuel hose, on the fire sleeve or on the tape? Which clamp would you recommend? Thank you
Is there any difference between white black or metallic red tape as far as toxicity is concerned or is it basically all just inert self fusing silicone? I want to pick up the best product possible but I also want it to be as safe as possible in case I need to fix a leaky water pipe with it.

But it doesn't stick/bond to the automotive power cable or that rubber sleeve. So it wouldn't be doing anything but making a obscure shaped red sleeve over a sleeve. The point being, it Must be sticking to the surface it's applied to or not sealing out anything but dust maybe
Think of the rubber o-rings, rubber gaskets and other rubber devices that seal fluid and gas pressure. They do not want or need to stick to their surroundings to seal. It is the ability to conform to shapes under pressure that makes it a good seal. So the tape is stretchy to create pressure as you wrap it around and seals by conforming to any shape but by design does NOT stick to anything but itself. Make sense?
I heard some military people uses F-4 tape on base. But honestly it should all be and work the same. just check descriptions for any specifics or differences.

I patched a radiator hose with this several years ago. I never fixed it and still drive the car daily. This stuff is incredible.

i think your insulation method can be further improved by putting heat shrink over the silicone tape so its less tacky and more sleek.

For sealing the battery cable and fire sleeve I don't think he wanted to see the blue line, he had more than enough coverage.
