The most ambitious (and stupidest) day I've ever attempted [ENGLAND PART 5]
ฝัง
- เผยแพร่เมื่อ 29 มิ.ย. 2024
- We're into day 4 of my most epic mission to date and having almost escaped the damp twangy clutches of Kielder forest, I now had the opportunity to deliver myself 12 miles from the coast in one fell swoop. 21 miles of more rugged mountains and forests would be a huge physical endeavor in it's own right, but it also happened to be bookmarked by a private and very active hunting estate, and a gigantic military firing range apparently littered with unexploded shells. Illegal? not technically. But not without risks. Do not attempt to try this yourselves...
Some speech might be difficult to hear - use good speakers/headphones if possible and use the man made subtitles

I am seriously wondering why the UK has these forests of fallen overgrown trees everywhere? Is this just centuries of poor forest management or what? How did all the trees fall so tangled? Without natural forest fires to clean that up it's just a pile of rotting wood. What terrible land management. All those sections of tangled fallen trees is unbelievable to see. Those sections are all that's left of the forests. That's the absolute worst looking forest I've ever seen or heard of. Totally ruined and uncared for. Trees stacked 20ft high and just left there. I've honestly never seen anything so pathetic as those little patches of woods. The UK and it's people are great, so I don't know what's going on with that. I don't even know how the trees could get in such a bad condition, what the hell happened to them?

This really shows what cultivation of monoculture (felling old forest and planting pines) has done to nature.
I agree with the sentiment, but I don't think I've seen a single pine in these videos. Pretty much all spruce.
@@bladdnun3016 Old patches of Scots pine will be there, they would have been planted by 19th century shepherds and usually are small circular woods. Very obvious on non forested bits of the Cheviots. A visit to the Cheviot Hills will soon show you evidence of past settlement - there are lots of relics from around 2000 years ago. What I learned about the forests of England from this series:
- There's a lot of fallen trees
- There's no animals
Nothing like the forests I live around in the South of England! I believe the ones Tom were are tree plantations anyway
Plenty of animals, they just tend to avoid people, and you make it very easy for them to avoid you by smashing your way through everything attempting to go in a straight line
oh theres absolutely animals, they just are very good at avoiding people. especially when it someone talking out loud to himself while going thorugh the forest XD you kinda wont take anything by surprise, they will know of your presense from preety far away.
I know really. I never seen entire forests just fall over where I am from.
Woodland animals are very good at not being seen.
It's not even the content that matters on this channel. This guy could talk about anything, and I'd listen
He's a good writer
Well the best part about straying from the line is that not only are you probably the first to cross England in a straight line, it allows someone else the ability to improve on the record and be the first to do it better. It's a win for everyone involved!

Disagree. He baited us with that last week making us think that was going to be the military firing range.
I don't know whether the fact there's no "tune in next time" footage of part 6, is ominous or hopeful.
This series is teaching me that England is really shit at Forest Management.
It's actually the opposite. The obstacles are all caused by deliberate land management strategies.
@@Mat-eq8mk Well yhea, in putting it that way. I agree entirely.
@@Mat-eq8mk You mean, they kick the windmills in extra high gear, to blow away the trees?
@@Mat-eq8mk No, the downed trees don't serve their purpose. They're windblown, and leaving them en masse is not just a waste of the trees themselves but of the ground's productive potential for several years. Planting spruce in the first place, which is very susceptible to windthrow, seems like a very poor idea in a place like that.

As a military man myself.
The reaction to you would be "bemused puzzlement" at worst.
How do you know someone has been in the military? They’ll tell you immediately.
Living besides Salisbury Plain training area it's worth mentioning those firing schedules are hopeless and next to worthless and it's accepted that the only way to know for sure there is no live firing is to make sure there's no red flags.
But having seen you've survived then this information is worthless to you but maybe it would be worth pointing this out before someone gets killed imitating your exploits, I love the content though keep up the good work and welcome to fatherhood x
Christmas has always worked for me at Otterburn.
If it's an actually active training ground, they'll clean up after themselves because they too don't want to die from unexploded ordnance. It's much worse if it's an abondoned one, possibly from a different state and army to the current one. There's a forest in eastern Germany that's on fire almost every year which then can't be extinguished properly because nothing but the main paths has been cleared from UXO. The fires occasionally trigger some as well.
When you know how fit a jogger Tom is, the exhaustion factor hits different, seeing him shattered.
Amazing efforts.
Not tonight babe, my favourite Straight Line Following Geographical Wizard Captain has uploaded!
For years, I read about moors and about heather in British fiction, but, I never really knew what a moor looked like or what heather looked like.
Heathers look absolutely beautiful when they are blooming. They are tough, because they thrive on mountains and coasts and can survive the harsh conditions.
Gorgeously desolate. I’d definitely recommend visiting some if you ever go to England on holidays. I visited the Dartmoor last summer and it was my favourite location of all the places we visited.

There will almost certainly have been soldiers doing 'night ops' on Otterburn, but they'll be hidden in harbour areas with no lights. The sentries will have seen and heard you coming a mile off.
What if the guy on stag was so chinstrapped he nodded off with his right cheek resting on the Gimpy or whatever they use now? I've heard it can happen.
@@simonh6371 It's not unheard of for civvies to accidentally trigger an ambush or similar. They're firing blank rounds so no danger, but would make for brilliant content.
so, if you're walking around in the dark, with a flashlight fixed to your mug. then chances are, by the time you see soldiers, they've long seen you coming already. and you'll only get to see them because they intend for you to see them.
Tom might quite possibly been the most conspicuous person wearing army-camo ever.
Technical question : If your biggest deviation to the left is 78 meters, and the biggest one to the right is 60 meters, are you allowed to shift the line to the right by 4 meters and call it a silver ?
That's clever
Yeah he's done that before. He never seems to think about that though until someone reminds him.
Tom check this out!
I hope that MOD is not coming to knock down his door and arrest him. I'm also happy that he didn't step on a landmine or some other unexploded ordinance.
Why would they? Trespass is not a criminal offence, and the byelaw restricting access is only valid when the site is being used for training. Which it wasn't at the time Tom was there. He didn't do anything illegal, so any arrest would be unlawful.
@@DaedalusYoung The Policing Act in 2022 changed it to be a criminal offence.
@@oliverjroebuck that's aggravated trespass. An offence will be committed if a person over the age of 18 resides or intends to reside on land in or with a vehicle (including caravan) without consent; and fails to leave as soon as reasonably practicable when asked to do so; and has caused, or is likely to cause significant damage to land/property/the environment, disruption to the use of land/supply of utilities, and/or distress via offensive conduct, such as the use of threatening words or behaviour.
Tom has done none of this, and he was never asked to leave anyway, so he wasn't committing aggravated trespass.
@@DaedalusYoung thank you for educating the non Brits among us.
@@DaedalusYoung It is trespass, although you’re correct it is not a criminal offence. He is in the CAA (Controlled Access Area), the live munitions portion, of the Otterburn Range. The adjacent Cheviot Dry Range which uses dummy munitions is considered a PAA (Public Access Area) accessible by the public in all places at all times, the CAA however is restricted to waymarked paths, permissive paths, and publicly accessible roads (Deer Road) which traverse the area or any area marked with Access signage, regardless of whether the red flags are up or not. Traversing off the waymarked and permissive paths through Otterburns live range and moorland does require a permit issued by the Range Liaison Office via the Range Coordinator, this is common for wildlife enthusiasts and birdwatchers in the area, even then they do ask visitors to stick to the permissive paths given the moorland of the live range CAA is absolutely littered with UXO (unexploded ordinance) and submunitions.

I was on a holiday boat for about a week and on the last few days I thought I'd try fishing near the back of the boat.. I was often going on my phone, putting it down on my lap and just overall having a good time. Though I might have more fish biting if I had just moved my chair further down the mooring spot, so...I got up... And the famous sound of a phone hitting the floor caused me to flinch.
