So my wife got the Sundaras and I got the 400i 2020 both in December. The sundaras have a different pad then the 400i. While the 400i have like a velour on the surface of the pads that go on your head and the Sundaras have like a different cloth that is not as fuzzy. I know they revised them though but it’s not the same as the 400i. Your opinions matched my own (though you are far more experienced then I am)but I found the Sundaras more detailed but the 400i’s a bit darker. I went cheaper because I needed to buy a dac and amp and seems like a better use of $200 to me lol. As for Wookiee names I like Wollffwarro.

@@albertweedsteinthethuggeni7797 In my opinion - Yes, it's quite easy to hear that the Sundara is better in every technical merit. It's going to be particularly worth it if you listen to music that requires slam and dynamics (EDM, Pop, Hip Hop etc) because the Sundara is quite a lot more dynamic than the HE400i 2020.
@@albertweedsteinthethuggeni7797 Yeah we listen to a lot of soundtracks and I find the detail of the Sundaras just a bit beter. And personally I find the build quality of them to be nicer as well. Not that I am knocking the He400i's I like them but they definitely lack the finish and polish of the Sundaras.

@@phillipnunya6793 I had the HE-4XX, they sound a bit different. HE-4XX has more "meat" to it, more texture, while HE-400i sounds the same tonality wise but far more airy and slightly faster. Basically HE-4XX is more impactful in its sounds but more tiring to the ear.

Wow finally, a Zeos review where I actually have experience with the headphones being compared! Will edit as I watch.
EDIT: I think with the new pads on the Sundara, the frequency response on both headphones sounds about the same but the 400i is like...80% as good as the Sundara in terms of detail retrieval and imaging. So I think it's a somewhat smoother Sundara rather than a somewhat warmer Sundara, which Z hears. Soundstage is about the same and the dynamics are very close. 400i is like 80-90% as good as the Sundara in terms of dynamics.
The biggest difference for me is definitely the comfort. I hate the headband on the 400i since, for my head and hair, the foam isn't very soft and the contact area is way too thin for me and my hair, which is long. They do have better ear clamp than the Sundara, partly due to the slight cup swivel and the headband choice. If they had a suspension headband, I probably would have preferred the 400i to the Sundara and be very happy with my purchase. At the same time, I think the clamp on the Sundara lend to it a better subbass rumble than the 400i, even with the same pads. And in stock form, I can tolerate ear clamp more than headband hotspots. I can imagine there are ways to soften up the headband (i.e. with time or with a bit of heat treatment) but I'm happy with the Sundara and its comfort issues.

it's odd to me that the 2020 variant has been discontinued. I might keep them as a collector item. The HE400S is not capable of the same frequency range (20 vs 35khz) so I'm not sure why HiFiMan considers that variant as the replacement now.
@iglu there's a guy on ebay who makes custom grills that open up the soundstage a bit more, they fit in the HE models. Some say it improves the bass as well. Likely it helps the 400se's as well, but those seem to need more power to drive
So... the 5XX dont exist ? i saw your reviw, and one of the things you say was that the 5xx were like inspired by the 400I ... so, as a replacement for my damaged 4XX shuld i guet the 5XX or just go with the 400I 2020 ? im very confused.

I got these (HE400i 2020's) two weeks ago. Love 'em. Fokin' love 'em. These do sound better to me than DT-1990 Pro's and HD660S's, which i've tried both for a week.

@@error4159 Yeah, i know they are. But that's just how those personal preferences work, in the end of the day. I liked both headphones, but both turned out for me worse, than an HE400i 2020.
DT-1990 Pro's were very detailed, very spacious, the bass was very nice... but they are too bright, too harsh, too heavy on my head, uncomfy for my ears and one of the drivers gave out on me after a week and a half of use. Just stopped working entirely. There goes "Beyerdynamic quality", i guess.
HD660S's were better, than a DT-1990 Pro in terms of sound, but i just couldn't stand the materials and the build quality. Cheap plastic, all squeaky, they just felt really, really cheap, like a kid's toy. Considering their 400€ price tag, i disliked that a lot. 1990 Pro's, at the very least, were built of a quality materials. They felt very, very solid, and premium. Unlike Sennheiser.
So yeah, there goes. I now ordered some Sundaras and waiting for them to arrive. Here's hoping they will satisfy me for the rest of 2021. :)

5xx have more detail and aggression. These have more low end and slitghly less soundstage.

These are my first quality headphone, and I absolutely love them. I got them recommended to me by a friend, and I can't thank them enough. I play games more than I listen to music, but I wanted something quality so I could enjoy both at a higher quality than my old astros, and I need these on at all times!
Could you please tell me a bit more about your experience with these headphones ? Im debating if I should spend this much on a pair of cans (my most expensive were a 65$ hyperx cloud). Do you play any multiplayer fps ? I play a lot of Escape from Tarkov and looking for a pair with good positioning and imiging but also have a lot of unfoiled single player games like remakes of Resident Evil 2 and 3, RDR 2 etc. Would like also to experience music and films on a different level of sound quality... Lastly what do you use to drive them ?

you can buy them openbox from hifiman store for $140. 400i are quite good at this price point. I dont think there is anything better you can buy, planar or else.
I dont like the pads though, they are impossible to clean. Sundara's pad are much better with their mesh fabric surface.
Can also recommend this option very much. In my case I could not even tell that it was an open box unit as everything was as new.
the 2020 sundaras do not use the same pads the HE400i 2020s, the sundaras are perforated cloth with with pleather outside
Oh huh, I'm looking at my pair of each headphone and that is correct. The cloth parts never really felt different due to differences in clamp force, though I could swap them to see if that affects the sonic characteristics.
I brought out my original 2012 model HE-400 a few months ago on a whim - the ugly blue ones Z describes in this video. They were in storage for years because screws kept coming loose and they kept falling apart and the cable/connectors were terrible. I got a new cable and threadlock for them just to get them to the point where they could play sound again (they have the horrible screw-in connectors that never stay put and wear out over time). The build quality is awful. The velour "pads" are as comfortable and soft as sharp rocks. It feels like the headphones weigh 10 pounds with a thin, barely-padded headband that cuts into my head like a knife.
But the sound... I don't know what the hell happened but I'm somehow constantly reaching for them over other planars that cost 3x as much. I did NOT remember them sounding so good, but back during the time they were my main cans I ran them out of an original Schiit Modi/Magni stack (not exactly the best DAC/amp combo by modern standards). I gotta say - if anyone else has a set of HE-400s and threw them in the closet and forgot about them years ago, they're definitely worth another listen, especially if you've upgraded your DAC/amp in the meantime!

Cats and audio is definitely a thing. Any relaxed cat listens and enjoys it, until the music goes south. You know this as the cat leaves the room lol. Cats should be involved with auditioning Hifi equipment.

Tarfful and Chewbacca are the two most famous Wookiees in Star Wars, but other known names that are canon include Gungi, Wullffwarro, Kitwarr, Black Krrsantan, and Greybok.

Here I am listening to 400i's (2019) wishing I didn't exist. (but I could hear his ac and heater like I was in the room with him tho.) Schiit stacks are great.
This headphone has the same exact driver and tuning as the original 400i, it's probably the earpads changing the sound.

So you were fairly vague when you said these sound better in every aspect than the he4xx yet they use the same exact planar driver as the 400i 2020 version... what makes them sound better?? I think you just haven't heard a pair of 4xx's in two years and forgot what they sounded like.
He said at the start that he thinks it might just be the pads. Same thing happened to the Sundara when it got its pad revision.

Time to review the HIFIMAN HE400SE
Literally the only headphone I'm looking forward to right now is the HE400se international version with the stealth driver tech stolen from the Susvara. If the stealth driver version can be had from taobao for the same price as the non stealth HE400se (which is $91) then I suspect it could be the best entry level planar and possibly give the Sundara (which I don't think is honestly all that good, especially for the cost) a serious run for its money and possibly beat it, especially with a pad swap and a grill mod. I'm not even sure why I'm excited for a cheap planar when there's no way they beat my current collection but still should be interesting and really shake up the sub $150 range pretty hard.
also, zeos, i demand you review them asap.
I had both the 2nd revision of the 400i and the 560, and I preferred the cheaper model back then. Interesting to hear I would still probably fell the same way. Eventually I'll be getting this newer version of the 400i.
Keep in mind that "metal" can be the cheapest grade of pot metal. I have had belts that are made from some pretty crappy "metal" and they actually snap when pulled too tight.

@@aqwandrew6330 people claim sundara is an upgrade, I just have the 6xx and he400i 2020s and I do prefer the 6xx, they're less impressive soundstage and layering wise but have better tunning and comfort.

Sundara is cheaper in my area vs the hd6xx (I'm not from us) that makes me more attracted to sundara

Edit: I actually bought the so-called 2020 stealth revision of the Sundara, and after comparing it against the 400i, I can safely say that the 400i is not just a "darker Sundara", the Sundara has much better resolution, more airiness to the sound, with a present, clean treble (sometimes with an almost insignificant metallic glare, but MUCH less than the 400i, which is considerably metallic and artificial), and the mids are more melodic and display details better, too. The lows on the Sundara are not the strongest, but they're not weak as well, just the perfect amount (at least for me). Very well separated from the other frequencies. The 400i sounds a little muffled in comparison, they do have more bass than the Sundara, but it's not as tight, I can say the the 400i bass rolls off in comparison to the Sundara. Both are excellent buys, each on their own price ranges 😊
if I have budget $400 max, what should I go Sundara / 400i for sound quality, separation, staging? mostly I'm hearing classical music / orchestra.

I think 400i 2020 only change headband.18 19 20 version use 3.5 to dual 3.5 cable.But before use 3.5 to dual 2.5 cable. Is the sound of the new version the same as the old version?

@Yume I do not, many reviewers however say that they are bass light and aren't punchy. That is markedly NOT what I hear. The quality of bass is better than my HD6xx. About as punchy too. You hear DMS say that the 6XX is his comfort headphones, the Sundara 2020 are mine. The Sundara 2020 are remarkably balanced and clean. Not as much just airy as zeos, Josh Valour and DMS have said about them, But really balanced. a special set of phones for sure. Better than the Ananda to me, Although I only heard them briefly.

Well, there are a lot of speakers, headphones, anime girls and a cat. I think I can trust the opinion of this cultured man.
I've had a 400i for over 5 years - before the 2020 version.
1) the headband pad sucks! It wears out quickly and is very hard to inexpensively replace. So the 400i 2020's headband is better.
2) I long ago swapped the original ear pads to Brainwaz XL perforated pads and WOW! More bass, more sound stage, and thus for the money, I've got pretty good headphones. This is my go-to movie streaming can. I haven't heard the 400i 2020 but Zeos makes it sound like they are similar to my modified older version. Pad swapping really works. IMO, these are good entry-level cans.
3) I'm just saying... my Hifiman ARYA is my overall best can of my collection ...but I paid $1,300 for them!
What kind of an upgrade is the Arya over the 400i or Sundara?

Since I have both I'm thinking of returning the 400i for something totally different- The Argons. I'd have to send them away but I'm thinking they may be more my style.
As far as I can tell, the Sundara didn't get new pads, they seem exactly the same. I believe Hifiman themselves have said they only changed the glue they used.

I got them few days ago, i like them but a bit heavy on my head; compared to koss kph30i g-pads, this is more refined and less bright, need more or less same volume (lower impedance but lower efficiency too) from little bear b4 w/burton v5i; i notice a bit of sibilance at higher frequency; ordered a better cable from aliexpress for 12 euro (silver cord)

When I demoed them I didn't think the Sundaras were a big enough improvement to even upgrade from the 4xx. I left AXPONA with an Aeolus that day so a moot point I guess.

400se 25ohm 91db 20hz-20khz double-sided magnet. 400i 35ohm 93db 20hz-35khz single-sided magnet.400i and 400s and 4xx units are similar. 400se use different units.

These are identical to the 4XX. Multiple channels have confirmed this. Not that there's anything wrong with that, ths 4XX are exceptional and alsp EQ exceptionally well

To be fair, bought the Fostex T50RP mk3's after listening to his audio demo and while i couldn't judge the low distortion they provide as planars, it absolutely matched the tonality i got through my earbuds on my LG v30.
Just bought Fidelio X2HRs.... Wonder if that was a silly decision and I should have bought the Hifimans instead.
Oh well, I can get some later. Hope the X2HR pads come back in stock soon.

-X2HR is a really laid down pair, ideal for R&B, Pop or gaming - everywhere where additional punch in bass they offer is appreciated.They are also rather comfortable when it comes to pressure they make on your head, although pads could use some better material - they are not very soft. Also the build quality is great, I can't imagine them broken in coming years.
-400i generally offers better listening experience when you are looking for details, classical music or old school rock sound really great on them. This however comes at a cost of a bit less comfort (headband pressure, pads themselves are really comfortable though). Don't get me wrong - lows are really enjoyable on them, but when you listen to some pop pieces you may miss more mass in bass. That's what my GF said - she appreciated details of 400i, but much preffered the kick X2 offered.
X2HR is also easier to drive, although 400i also sound good even from a mobile phone. Fidelios are also both cheaper and generally better built.
I just recently bought these but the newer version to see if they are good and I bought them for $109. I listen to late 80s to mid 2000s power/prog/melodic metal like early Crimson Glory Fates Warning Magnitude 9 Metalium Liege Lord Helstar and other various bands and for some reason my Philips Fidelio X2 the old version from around 2015ish sounded the best for that type of music for me. I since bought the Grado 80e Sennheiser HD 600 and Sennheiser 58x Jubilee and those just didn't sound as good. I listen to music where its mostly mid range and a lot of high range screams and for some reason the Philips Fidelio X2 even though people said they are more bass focused they were more enjoyable to me for some reason. I actually ruined them by pressing in the speaker cone and have no clue why I did that like an idiot. I know they have the Philips Fidelio X2HR but I don't know if its similar. I listen to music basically all mid-high and crazy guitar solos and riffs and a lot of 5th octave notes. Maybe my ears suck or something. Most people recommended Grado SR80e and they hurt my ears and I can't listen to them for hours with all those mid range and high range notes and actually prefer my Jubilee 58x over my HD 600 for some reason.
