    The last video I watched was your Ananda review, and I was surprised by the huge jump in quality here. In addition to simply being higher resolution, you have made huge leaps in cinematography (lighting, camera motion and angle, etc.). It is very good that you are focusing on shots of the headphones and then bringing the camera back to you for the bigger statements. I especially love how you actually show footage of all the headphones you are talking about as it really helps with comprehension. Definitely keep focusing on lighting and textures (so tasty in this video), and check out cinematography especially for product shots to get even better. Keep up the good work!

    Thanks for the excellent review! I own a 4XX - one of the first ones to be produced actually with a serial # around 200 - as well as the latest version of the original 400i that I purchased a few months ago and that uses improved headband structure for better durability, 3.5 mm connectors and slightly different Focus Pads to the original. I have Focus Pads A on the 400i and Dekoni Hybrid Hifiman pads on the 4XX. The two sound virtually identical in this configuration, although the 400i is perhaps a little bit more forward in the mids and slightly less forward in the highs - just a small touch. If I swap the pads, it's pretty much the other way around, meaning the two sound virtually identical if used with the same pads. I don't hear any odd reverb effects or anything of the sort with either one. Both are superb for the price and direct competition to anything in that price range.

    Amazingly detailed review as usual, I've paired mine with a fx-audio dac x6, and am running it eq-d to the harman curve, absolutely loving it. Low shelf at 60hz +7db, the 400i handles it like a champ. Weirdly enough, the only part of the review, where I don't find myself in the same situation is the imaging. I play mostly competitive fps games and find the imaging to be pretty stellar.

    If you're interested in looking for an open back with strong and clear subbass extension while fitting the harman target fairly well, I'd recommend giving the Beyerdynamic TYGR 300 R a try. It's marketed for gaming, but after owning one for a few months, I can honestly say it excels beyond that. That, and unlike most beyers, the peaky treble is much more well tamed.

      I stopped showing my graphs because people were taking them wrong. MiniDSP not being industry standard or accurate by professional standards etc. I tried to show them only as a visual aid but it was more hassle than it was worth with people either attacking me for showing MiniDSP graphs because they aren't accurate. or drawing conclusions based on the graphs which is also bad for obvious reasons. These days I use it in private to check things aren't broken. Maybe I should create a page of my measurements for those who are interested but there are so many good measurements out there from pro level rigs I dunno if its worth it.

    Also, I would like to warn potential 4XX/400i buyers, especially those who think of buying one used - there are bad units around and not necessarily defective in a way you may think. I recently sold a 400i. It was an older version with 2.5 mm connectors and I bought that one used. It was like new condition when I bought it and I was really excited as the seller was asking only $100 CAD for it (I am in Canada, yes) which is an amazing deal for a 400i in Canada. I already owned a 4XX at the time, but the deal was so good I thought I should just buy the 400i to have as a spare. After all, they are supposed to be the same headphone except for outer design and pads. Well, as soon as I tried them, I knew something was off about the sound. I already owned another 400i about a year earlier and felt that it was a great sounding headphone except for the tizzy treble spike around 8k and somewhat light bass presence. This one however, felt oddly lacking in dynamics or something. First impression was that the upper bass was overemphasized. Initially, I thought that maybe I just forgot what a 400i sounds like and that it was supposed to sound this way, so I tried getting used to it. The mids and highs sounded just fine otherwise with no issues. Very similar to my 4XX I had on hand, except for that odd issue somewhere in the bass.
    However, after a month or so of listening to them, the feeling that something was off didn't leave me. The lower mids and upper bass seemed pushed forward too much and the sub bass lacked presence with any EDM or bass focused electronic music in general, although anything acoustic and most pop or rock sounded just fine with no obvious issues. This was very different from my 4XX which sounded way more filled in in the sub bass with none of the weirdness of this 400i. So I ran some test tone sweeps and lo and behold - the sub bass noticeably dropped off below 100 Hz. In fact, it was barely audible below 50Hz at normal listening levels. By contrast, even my Koss KSC75 which are known for a lot of sub bass roll off actually extended better down to 45 Hz than this 400i did. My Sennheiser HD555 and HD600 extended significantly better and the 4XX was in a different league entirely.
    I tried swapping pads and none made any difference to the sub bass extension, except for Sundara Pali pads (latest version), which bright the sub bass from 40-50Hz up a few dB to about the level of an HD600. The sub bass remained a fair bit weaker than on the 4XX however.
    So I decided to buy another 400i new to see if that one would be better and indeed it was. I got a latest 400i version brand new and it sounded basically identical to my 4XX with properly extended bass. So in conclusion - I bought a used 400i that was defective, but not in any obvious way. It sounded perfectly fine from 150 Hz up, but dropped off a cliff in the sub bass vs. a normal 400i or 4XX - in both channels equally. It was only really apparent with music that had strong sub bass content and there was no distortion or anything - it was just severely lacking volume. Switching pads to the latest Sundara Pali pads helped somewhat, but extension remained limited. Visually, there was nothing wrong at all with the headphone, including the drivers. I just hope that was an exception rather than a rule and that few 400i/4XX units have this problem, but who knows...

    • @mikafoxx2717
      @mikafoxx2717 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I have an older he400i with the 2.5mm and paid almost twice as much as you did for yours, also in Canada. This was just a few months before the 2020 400i dropped for basically the same price as I got these, but new. Looking at frequency response graphs, the older 400i's drop off quicker in the bass than the new ones. Pads or no, they have refined the manafacturing of said driver over time even if it's the same one. Using the wavelet/autoeq profile for 2016 400i instead of the normal 400i or 2020 400i should cover it. I also have Koss ksc75's as my backups and their bass is a just little bit more present without EQ, but with it, the old 400i smokes the Koss.

    First of all thank you so much for the effort and time you put into making these videos. They are very helpful! If you don't mind I have a couple follow up questions.
    1.) Between the K371, HE-400i (2020), Sundara, and the HD560s which gets you closest to your ideal sound signature ( which I think is the Harman Target) w/o eq?
    2.) As a follow up to #1, do any of the other headphones on the list have exceptional qualities that overcome their deviation from your ideal sound signature w/out eq?

    I have the 400i se pre-2020 with the 2.5mm jacks. But I don't know if I would really rate it above the 6xx. When I first bought them both was leaning towards the 400i but over the years I definitely used the 6xx more. Maybe in part this is because I feel like the 6xx can handle a bit more abuse (especially the pads). The vocal range sounds better on the 6xx while maybe you get that planar sound with slightly more textured or responsive bass on the 400i and more of a peak at certain high tones.

      @@cricket4life249 thanks card to expand a bit, are the Senns too neutral for your preference, they are supposed to be more of an analytical, studio use come reference headphone. Which as I am not. Reviewer I’m not convinced I really need.

    Yeah, these are great headphones. You could start and stop with these, and focus your resources next on portables (Porto Pros or some IEMs) and speakers.

    Honestly, there is no awkward position in EU. It makes 0 sense to order anything from Drop since the EU warehouse has been shut down since 2020. By the time you're done paying for shipping and the frigging VAT tax you're better off just buying whatever you can over here in EU. Bummer, though.

    I am so glad I didn't buy these. I withdrew all consideration of Bluetooth headphone technology, and fully dedicated my purchasing to wired-only. I'm sticking with this resolution. That's that.

      @InvisibleIink 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@WheezyTech I recall being on the edge of quitting Bluetooth when the Panda was announced. Their claims, which you point out succinctly, had me tempted to go in. After all, this was the company that put out the highly regarded THX AAA 789 amplifier, so that previous collaboration had me thinking, they're talking about putting that sound into a portable headphone! Nope
      Now along comes your video basically putting another nail into the firmly sealed coffin that represents my decision to avoid any and all wireless products going forward. Thanks!

    I'm simply disappointed with the HE400i. They're only decent with bass light songs. if you listen to songs which don't depend on bass or don't have a prominent bass line to miss, you'll be fine. Otherwise, you'll feel a huge void in where you know the bass frequencies should be. I think Joshua Valour's review is on point on these. Also, these murder your ears if the recording is not good. Im looking to dump these on the first unsuspecting poor soul that i can cuz no one would want these after auditioning them. The quality of music through my Sony WF-1000XM3 is far more satisfying than the HE400i despite not being as detailed cu they're better rounded with respect to all frequencies instead of being shrill like the HE400is.
    P.S - Did i say mention there was no bass to speak off no matter which amp i deployed?
