To be fair, I would treat the holocron 'only opened by jedi' as just a lock, a Jedi could open it easily, they have the key, but a sith would have to 'pick the lock' which would take time and effort, so it is not too unreasonably that despite the inquisitors holding it in their possession for a while, they had not gotten it open yet, perhaps they were waiting for darth vader or something to arrive to manually open it.
You could easily explain this as needing a light attuned force presence to open it, and that someone with a connection to the dark side could not. Simple
Ahhh I remember the good ole days, whena lightsaber was literally just a weapon, a personalized and customized weapon, but a weapon nonetheless, and Holocrons were gatekept by ai force spirits so not just anyone having a temper tantrum or doing yoga could access it.
I remember a time when Holocrons could be considered a form of Phylactery, preserving an imprint of the one who created it and all their knowledge at the time of creation. Which is how Darth Bane began his Rule of Two, because he found Darth Revan's Holocron.
@@blade8741 I don't remember if Eno Cordova ever spoke from the holocron or if it was just BD-1 recordings, but at least in other canon sources we still have AI gatekeepers like in the Luke Last Jedi comic
Theory: Jedi are trained in a specific technique to open Jedi holocrons. Cere's concern is that although Trilla isn't a Jedi anymore, she still has that knowledge to open a holocron, and if she doesn't, some other ex-Jedi Inquisitor does, and if not them, Vader himself. This also explains why Palpatine couldn't open a Jedi holocron during the Clone Wars, but would have no problem doing so at all during his reign as the Emperor. After Order 66, he has access to virtually all Jedi knowledge, including how to open Jedi holocrons. The only hole I can think of for this theory is Sith holocrons, but they're so wildly different from Jedi holocrons I think it's not much trouble to explain. Sith holocrons are more than just repositories of information, they often come with an outright malicious spirit that WANTS Force-users to open it if it thinks it can seduce them to the dark side. Knowing that, I don't think there's a specific technique for opening Sith holocrons since they're almost sentient if not completely sentient, you must simply show your willingness to learn from the dark side and it will maliciously comply.
If Jedi are 0.0001% of the galaxy, only on coruscant there should be about a million of them, so if only 100 survived, its more like 99.99999999999% success rate

Heres a problem about cal's holocron I've yet to see anybody talk about: BD-1 is right there, and saw the holorcron while it was on. Meaning: There's a double of the map in his memory banks
Exactly! In Effect And Cause, BT mentioned that he transferred a copy of his AI into Cooper's helmet, meaning he's still alive after he sacrificed himself to destroy the... wait, wrong Respawn game.
Clearly the reason that force lady was afraid that Dark Daddy would be able to get the data disk open is because she knew he was a fallen Jedi and not a Sith Lord. She was able to read his mind with force powers to know that.
Came here after the lightsaber video. Please keep making videos! This is really high quality content with great writing and editing. Phenomanal job. Hope you blow up!
Personally I think that different holocrons have different types of security. Additionally, I can see quite a lot of Sith being very forgiving with the security of some of their holocrons so as to tempt Jedi to the dark side, so long as the information on it doesn't hurt them in the long run. On the other hand, some of the Jedi holocrons would have even more special protections than the basics, such as destruction when opened the normal way by a darksider. Those protections can be worked around, but it probably requires quite a lot of time, expertise and power to do so, especially if you don't want to risk the knowledge crumbling away in your hands
i assumed they'd need a jedi to open the holocron and that one with balance in the force (light side) would be able to open a jedi holocron. The sith however exert their will over the force (dark side) and so a sith holocron can be opened by anyone with the will as the force doesn't have the same jurisdiction there. I don't think its that much of a plot hole if you follow that view and its consistent with the nature of the force in canon. They just need a jedi, doesn't have to be cal. And survivors are a dime a dozen so step 1. get holocron, step 2. find jedi survivor, kidnap, torture until they open it for you. And that would be why Trilla hadn't gotten the information yet. Some kinks in that but suspension of disbelief is a part of a lot of story telling and I don't need to suspend that much belief for it to work for me - biggest issue is Cal assuming they didn't get any info from it
Totally. Like I said, the rules about holocrons are fuzzy at best, but the implication from the game is that the Empire has some way to open it. If so, then his decision to destroy it without knowing is a weird one.
In case you're interested, my first interaction with Halocrons was a toy shaped like one that would guess the character you were thinking of in a similar vein to Akinator.
That soulds super cool. Young Max spent many an hour with Akinator and similar toys. I've never used a holocron-shaped one before, though it would make a fine addition to my collection 🤔 time to ebay dive
@@MaxofZorroReviews I'm sure you already found it, but just in case I tried to find it myself. It looks like it is the Uncle Milton Star Wars Science Jedi Holocron.
Ok, 7:03 yes this is how the force works. The dark side is far more alluring and once fully in it’s hard to get out. It took Vader being beaten and saved by his son to turn him back to the light side. It is far easier for a light-side user to use the dark side than for a dark-side user to use the light. The dark side is easier, it looks more powerful and is more alluring, but is also addictive and ultimately less powerful than the light side. In the case of Ezra, he was beginning to fall to the dark side and was giving into base temptations. However this phase didn’t last long as Kanan, his father-figure, helped pull him out. Ashoka never used the dark side after leaving the Jedi Order because she understood the fact that the dark side is inherently evil, something Disney doesn’t seem to understand. As for the game, it’s possible Vader was planning on forcing Cal or Cere to open it, and the whole thing was an elaborate plan to get them to come to the base so they could be captured but that might be giving them too much credit. I still like the game but that’s definitely a plot hole. Also in another video you criticize Thrawn getting outsmarted by Ezra and I would argue that Ezra did the equivalent of pulling a queen out of his pocket while he was in check and placing it on the board in a way that l put both of them in checkmate; an “illegal” move that Thrawn had 0 way of predicting in any way shape or form. Thrawn literally had them beat had it not been for external factors and self-sacrifice. Not hating just pointing out that Rebels is better than the credit many people give it. Great video as always.
Thank you for pointing that out, so I don't have to! Another difference I think is that a sith holocron wants to be used, to give the user more power. The Jedi holocron doesn't, as it often holds important information.
I agree with every point you made and have had this thought myself. It’s one of those lore issues that wasn’t set in stone, yet is commonly used and important, so it tends to be like that Stan Lee quote for which superhero will win in a fight: “Whoever the writer wants to win”. My only thought (however I don’t think it provides a solution to the actual CONTINUITY issues you brought up) is that Vader would be able to open it as a former Jedi. There’s even that clip of Anakin opening a Jedi holocron. Great video man
While I’m not super familiar with all the characters in fallen order, my interpretation of her statement about “only a Jedi can open a holocron” was using the word, not as a denomination, so to speak, but as shorthand for “force user”. The Jedi have been the only public-facing force users for 1,000 years not that long ago.
As someone who came from the star wars books (after watching the first six films ofc) I really enjoyed the way holocrons and how they are written there. Since playing that game I have a permanent headache on how they handled it
The holocron was first introduced in Dark Empire comic series in 1992. It was a quite different thing there. A kind of semi-sentient data repository that is usually used as a teaching aid. The holocron had a "gatekeeper", an avatar based on its creator and may even have a bit of it's creator's spirit, I don't remember the details exactly. The point is that the gatekeeper has a personality and may refuse to reveal information it thinks would be too dangerous for the user to know at this point. A Jedi holocorn would tell the student to consult with their master, while Sith holocoron would try to corrup or test the user to see if they are worthy. Of course, this all doesn't matter because Filoni cares nothing about the continuity and turned the holocrons into MacGuffins with very poorly defined properties. That's how they have been in the canon henceforth, especially the new Disney canon. Still, if we pretend that Fallen Order holocron was a Tom Veitch style one, even if one wouldn't be used just for storing information of some Force sensitive kids, it would keep its data hidden unless it identified its user as a Jedi. Inquisitors might be able to interrogate it like it was a person, dominate it with Force, and force it to reveal its secrets. Palpatine certainly would.
I'd assume while it's not impossible, it's significantly harder to open a holocron of the opposite alignment, which is only amplified the further away you are from that alignment. Yoda for example might have taken years to align himself with a Sith Holocron from someone like Darth Nihilus and vice versa.
Jedi holocrons are typically pretty sterile and require technique to open. Sith holocrons are inhabited by a malicious copy of the creator that opens for people who might be vulnerable to dark side corruption
These videos are awesome! Not only is your vocal commentary and script writing really well thought out and entertaining, but the attention to detail in the background clips are truly awe-inspiring. Also, I love the little political references throughout some of these vids.
I know Trilla is written in a way that's supposed to make you pity her in the end and emphasize with the unfairness of her plight, but them crazy eyes they gave her scream that she went past the point of no return gleefully and didn't even notice.
Trilla is actually one of my biggest points of praise for the game's story. Her motivation for turning to the Dark Side is very strong, her hatred of Cal is not because he's a "toxic cis man", it's because he's Cere's new apprentice, and she feels she was abandoned by Cere. Her break at the end where she almost lets the facade down, that reveals the brokenness and pain behind the crazy eyes and obsessiveness.
Pretty sure that Cere says Jedi but means Force User (Especially since when she was trained as a Jedi the only force users around would have been Jedi until the Prequels)
They might've wanted Cal to become adept in the skills of a force-user before using him and trying to twist him to the dark side following, but they don't, and unless they have a pretty solid persuader, it probably wouldn't have been a good idea to try and get him to forgive the implicated result of letting them know where 500,000 force-sensitive children are. Edit: Watched the rest of the video, that ending makes me a little sick to my stomach, I haven't seen an ending to a game intentionally or unintentionally implicate the band of heros to be stupid cowards probably ever, it's an unpleasant feeling even just to see in a retrospective.
Still, if out of 10,000 Jedi maybe 100 to 200 or even a little more survive, it was still a great success overall because hunting 100 or 200 Jedi is definitely easier than to hunt 10,000 Jedi
Hiya zorro, I'm here to offer my own interpretation of holocrons. You do need a version of the force and you probably need the stones, if a jedi can unlock instantly probably a sith has to both have a stone for it to open, but also have the time to make the holocron want to open. Trilla couldn't open it on her way because she probably ain't have a stone. Cere although unclear if she's looking around so much for this holocron probably has a stone. As for ezra, cannon is dubious at best but let's say maul through his I interactions gives a sith pass or something and the idea that 'the darkside is open to all'
The clone warw still need a jedi to open the Holocron, cad bane had to kidnap a jedi and torture to open the Holocron but ended up getting anakin to open up to keep asohka to stay safe. To be fair with the sith its easy to go to the darkside not the otherway
The idea that the holocrons are geometric puzzles that require an alignment to navigate due to the philosophical teachings put into the puzzles so that just being good or being bad for a bit does not really work is not bad of an idea... Lightsiders would have an easier time tricking basic darkside holocrons because of their open mindedness to trying new things for the greater good even if it harms them But selfish darksiders would never wrap their heads about the gay ass pussy ass ways jedi make their holocrons...
