- Review of the STIHL hla86,long reach battery hedge trimmer.
I did this review for Stihl, but i am not paid or sponsored by Stihl and the machine was returned to Stihl
The STIHL hla86, is a professional cordless hedge trimmer, which is telescopic, so from 260cm to 330cm in length and 180cm when folded for transport.
At 4.8kg in weight, without battery, it runs on the AP batteries, run times are approximate, AP100 up to 72 mins, AP200 up to 144 mins, AP300 up to 180 mins.
I had and ran the machine for around 6 weeks, it performed very well. What ever I was trimming/cutting, I found it a very capable machine. The ability to extend it was easy (telescopic) which made trimming and cutting of tall hedges much quicker. I also found that it easily cut through 18 months of growth. Being battery, the low noise and vibration made it a pleasure to use.

@@barlow2976 it really depends on what size of hedges you take on and if it annual trimming or older growth, if its regular maintenance customers, would say hla86, but one offs, the hla135, but both exactly machinery 👍
Nice review 👍 love mine although I use the 66 way more. Agree with the trigger switch, preferred the setup in the 65/ 85. Stihl needs to send me some kit to 'test' the amount of it we use😂

The blades on this one really are fantastic indeed. Using it a lot for small jobs instead of the non-extendable model. However the safety switch is quite annoying sometimes.
Also I'm a skinny guy and I've got to say this thing is tiring to hold fully extended. It gets too front heavy for me when I'm tired. Can't tell if it's just me.
Hi, I'm a small bloke too and yes they do get heavy over a long period, but it's same with any machine at the same length, so its definitely not just you, the trick is to swop about doing different bits of trimming, low stuff, then high work, back to low ect, the blades are great, maybe the best iv used over the years.

A question, are these batteries trimmers reliable for a trade? Can I cut 3 houses hedges without changing the batteries? If the answer is no, I am against what is so called green energy. I am waiting to hear from your experience. Thank you for the video and instructions.
Hi, it really depends on size of hedges, the only thing I can say is, battery (trigger time) for my, surprisingly good, I will add, it's also the fact your not breathing in all the dirty fumes and less noise, vibration, which is a great benefit, I would suggest trying to get a demo machine from a dealer, hope that helps.

For me it can certainly last a solid day with the trimmers. May depend if you're the kind of guy that just keeps the trigger pushed in or if you do it with strokes, also how fast you are of course.
The batteries don't do well on the weed wackers though. Easily overheats and only lasts about 25 minutes.
Is the motor/gear box always attached to the blade, that make it top heavy ? Any pole hedge trimmer the motor/gear box at the base/handle ?

Great review. Had my 86 for about a month now and it's been pretty much in daily use. Upgraded from an old 85. It's a great machine but like you have to think about the safety switch. A real pain. I liked the previous lock switch. The other issue for me is the telescopic twist lock. It is a magnet for attracting fine (wet!) conifer cuttings. I'm concerned over time this will jam up. Time will tell!
That's interesting your thoughts on the twist lock, I only did dry conifers from what I can remember, I did wet taxus, but that doesn't gum up like conifer, please keep me updated on that mate.

I have to agree I have both hla85. And hal 66 the 66. Has the trigger release bit what I really don't like .. the long reach 85 is perfect design alsow can put a security cable thru 85 unlike the 66..unless u keep the hoop handle on u could use that put I prefer to use without it.
I perfer the older switch design too, I'm thinking it's probably H&S regs that it's how it is now.👍

Nice review there mate, i take it you didnt want to commit to this machine having returned it. Stroke rate at 3000 seems a bit slow for my liking as well. 👍
I really liked it, I would of happily keeped it and used it, but stihl needed it but, it's on my shopping list lol, I find 3000 plenty fast enough, but we all work different and different requirements.

@@jasongardener3425 Ah i wasnt sure what the protocol was with kit you get sent etc, I was assuming sometimes keep it for free (if you're lucky) or buy at a reduced price. Yeh im sure it does a good job, would just be concerned about it coping with those finer hedges 👍
@@jasongardener3425 , some TH-cam gardeners are swinging their trimmers like a samurai. The hedge that comes out is so twisted that the TH-camr would be instantly fired by a Lord owning the garden. Of course, I doubt that in England you can do those "taming the jungle" videos; for those even 4.000U/min is way too slow; 8.000, someone?
@@RJLgardens it definitely cuts fine hedge 👌, apart from a couple of bits stihl kindly have let me keep, I have and use the kit as long as I want, to get a real and true feeling of it performance and then returned to stihl, it's always stated in the video or description, 😊👍👍

@@grahamwatson6570 my hla85, which is the model before the 86, is over 4 years old and still going strong, my hla86 2 years no issues
My 85 is still going after a major head rebuild by me , my 1 year old 86 is on its 3rd motor 2nd Bowden cable and now in for a cracked housing , my 2 month old has 100 is in for rattling and vibration , msa 161t chainsaw is my second one and is great , fsa 90 strimmer is only fit for homeowner use , I've invested about a £1000 in batteries so we can cut all day , breakdowns are costing money 😡@@jasongardener3425
@@jasongardener3425 my 85 is 4 years old , I replaced the head casting and rebuilt the head recently,, my 86 has just come back from the shop for the 5th time in a year, junk
honest review Jason 👍 could of done with that extendable feature on yesterday's job (some of the widest I've ever done ) I found it quite heavy when I tried it at my sthil dealers 👍

It's takes a little getting used to the weight when extended, but it's that trade off for the reach, hope there's a video of the job mate.

couldn't get any footage mate as it was a big job on a fixed price & I had to bring a labourer in on a hourly rate 😙 so time was money if you know what I mean 😁🌲👍 take care bud
I have it for home use and I agree; the security switch is quite a nuisance, especially if one lacks big hands. I've almost hurt my thumb while trying to extend it during use; was thinking to do it the American way and use some tape on it. Otherwise; I'm thinking to get an adapter and hang the battery from my waist to reduce the weight. With the battery it gets heavy. Run times with the AP 300S are longer than a muscled home user can hold the machine.
Hi, have you tried a ap200 battery in it, you would definitely feel a weight difference, think maybe some of my problem with the switch is, my thumb isn't very flexible (age) lol.

@@jasongardener3425 , my thumb is young but when you're in the middle of a task and maybe even in a slightly akward position then you must on occasion do thumb yoga. Even worse if you must divert your gaze while trying to solve the delay caused by that switch, designed for big hands. I'll try the adapter; I already have that battery bag and I'll feel the difference even more with a simple and not costly adapter. Also, buying a battery just for the trimmer is a no go for a home user. cost/value :D

We are a local authority that have purchased a number of these hedge trimmers as they have low hand arm vibration levels but we have found them too heavy. Does anyone know if STIHL provide demos and advice of the most efficient way of using the equipment
What size batteries are you using in them, as I tend to us ap200 in them, as helps keep the weight down a little, but unfortunately it the nature of the beast, to have such long reach, there will have to be a little weight 👍, but I have to say, I'm 52 and 5'8, 10 stone, I can use the hla86 all day, so is it a physical fitness problem, rather than machine weight
One thing you can look at, is the stihl RTS harness, which helps carry the weight and spreads the weight across the shoulders and waist, hope that helps

Thanks Neusa, when it's extended and doing high work, yes you will feel it over time, but if needed to choose 2 stroke machine or the hla86, I would pick up the hla86.

I have the HLA66, switched to battery power and haven't looked back, bought a few batteries, the trigger time on these units is amazing. No cold starts or mixing fuel. They provide a great cut to everything I've taken it too

I’ve always liked Stihl but imo there battery stuff looks a bit cheap and hideously expensive , I’m still running the Husky Pro battery equipment and I can’t complain and if people are bothered I think cosmetically the husky stuff looks just that bit classier than the Stihl and even the EGO. I was also told by a reliable source the Husky battery equipment is better than the Stihl battery stuff. So as much as I’ve always rated Stihl I’ll be sticking with the Husqvarna for the time being. Good review.
I find the build quality good, iv a few stihl machines and not broken any, iv tried some husqvarna battery kit and yes very good build quality, but at a price of increased weight, but we all look for different things in tools.

@@jasongardener3425 , Husqvarna and Stihl are on the same level; in general. Stihl tries to keep the weight reduced, thus a little different mix of materials. For me the priority is on a lighter machine. As for batteries, Stihl has the super Ap500s battery, something Husqvarna can only dream of.

Good to hear back from you, currently my other half and daughter have covid but they don’t seem to bad with it, I’ve escaped it up to now. How’s things going in the lawn care community? Why quote weights without the battery, it wont run without one! Its not you chap, its sthil, just to make it look lighter. Good video btw.
It's because, it depends on which battery size people choose, as different battery weights, so final weight will change 👍
