    Rare to have a garden tool review where the talking is above a whisper and there isn't a lot of background noise. I am looking at one of these for work and I really appreciate your good, honest obviously no sponsored review. Well done.

    Wish I'd seen this, I bought one yesterday! The power off after a second is a deal-breaker for me. My Makita strimmer and mower stay on for about a minute at least! I may be returning this trimmer before even using it on any greenery; shame, but we know these micro-switch push buttons have a finite life. This nonsensical 'safely device' will causes it to fail years before it ought to. He mention cable-tie on the initial power button which negates the whole idea of safety; come on Makita!! (praying they have improved this since the video was posted)
    EDIT: 2 months later, here are my impressions.. It is possible to train yourself to keep hold of the top safety switch and control power from the lower trigger alone but I did find myself still having to turn the thing back on regularly due to shifting position /angles. I have a recurring shoulder injury and on first use I found this a bit heavy going on my largest hedge - 12+ft high, perhaps 60ft length and still had to use a proper ladder. Using it again a few days later on a 10ft conifer hedge of similar length was far less painful on the shoulder. I still found I was changing the angle of the head rather a lot but the lack of power cord almost mitigated the negatives. Up close work is awkward due to the length and I couldn't help thinking I might have to buy a shorter version to complement this pole clipper. Pretty good battery life on a 5Ah battery (compared to longevity in my strimmer at least). I may as well mention that the DLM460 mower is very impressive and I have a pretty big lawn.

    Actually my impressions of the Makita 18V hedge trimmers are completely different. I find the system more powerful than I thought. I cut absolutely everything that my customers ask me to with this pole trimmer and the normal hedge trimmer. Never found it lacking in power.

      @@peterpipe9015 Interesting.. My own is going strong for the 3rd season of heavy commercial use. I'm betting my life on Makita.. Beside the hedge trimmer I also use a hand held 4mix gas blower and a twin 18V chain saw which is a beast..
      I've heard people trash talk Stihl, Echo, Husqvarna, Milwaukee and everything in between. Of course you also have people swearing their lives on those same brands. Personal experience is 90% of an opinion..

    I don't think he likes 18V stuff, and yes, a higher voltage will be more powerful, but much heavier! Regarding the use of plastic for housings, it's durable and light. People always seem to think that 'plastic' is weak, not always and I'm sure Makita have chosen it well in order to keep the weight down, and indeed it is a light machine.

    • @mikedaygm
      @mikedaygm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey.
      I do like the 18v stuff as I mentioned it has its use and is very light for trimming fine stuff. I wouldn't say plastic is weak but for a tool that is going to be put down and scraped along the concrete, plastic will fade away a lot faster than say a metal would. Aluminum is more durable and sometimes more lighter than plastic. Could be a shout.

      Dunno the metal on both my husqvana chainsaws has broken on both my 550xp and my 572xp.
      The entire crank casing on my 550 shattered and on my 572 the bridge connecting the fuel and oil cans broken completely. Both within just over the first year I owned them. My Makita blades broke on my dun600 but that's only because some fat twat (me) stepped on them whilst carrying logs.

    Very expensive given the cons! £250 without batteries. If power was all about voltage, the 240V mains cutters ought to be real beasts! But it is very annoying that none of the battery cutters seem to state motor power properly as watts so they are impossible to compare. In theory an 18V unit could be just as powerful as a 60V one, but would require a larger and therefore heavier motor to handle higher current.

    • @mikedaygm
      @mikedaygm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Power and Voltage definitely goes hand in hand. 18v machines won't last as long as higher Voltage machines. Plus it's all dependant on the ah of the battery you put inside the machine ti then find our your Wh, which is the most important part for determining the machines run time.
      I thonk £250 is quite cheap when you actually compare it to other machines of the same quality. Also with hedgretrimmers you pau for thr quality of the moto and thr machines RPM capabilities, where this one is superior to pretty much most of them available.
      All 240v machines are for domestic use hence why they have plug for house plug sockets and will never ever put out the same power as well made units with more defined motors.

    • @john_hind
      @john_hind 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikedaygm Higher voltage does not necessarily mean longer run-time either. As you say, Watt-hours are the measure of this, but if you have Amp-hours just multiply by the voltage to get Watt-hours. For the same motor power a 2Ah 40V battery will last the same time as a 4Ah 20V battery and it will do the same work and be roughly the same size and weight. Both these batteries are 80Wh. Similarly a 250W, 20V motor will do the same work as a 250W, 40V one. You need watts and watt-hours to determine the run time. Higher RPM means a lower gearing ratio, which means higher torque required to prevent the cutter from stalling, which requires more Watts. It all comes back to Watts, which for some reason they are not telling us!
      I've decided on the 40V Greenworks system. I may regret my penny-pinching, but I have got a hedge cutter, a pole saw, a weed-wacker with one battery and charger for less than this Makita 18V hedge cutter with one battery and charger alone.

    Light? OK, you're well built, is it light enough to use for a couple of hours on a long hedge by most people please?
    One of my concerns.
    Agree, not a commercial gardeners tool, but not meant for that market?
    I note you used ladders for top? Could you trim the top without a ladder (surely the purpose of a long reach trimmer?)

    • @mikedaygm
      @mikedaygm  3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Hey
      It weighs 4kg so literally nothing. Spread 4kg across a meter pole and you'll barely notice your holding it.
      Also there's always need for ladders even when using long reach hedgers as you need to be able to see what yoir actually cutting...
      Using a long reach just means less stretching so less fatigue.

    • @zoba4645
      @zoba4645 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@mikedaygm I don’t think there’s any lightweight hedge trimmer, even if it’s 18V and 6 feet long. If you work with them you know that every gram of weight counts. Even 4kg can be a lot for longer pruners. They are looong. Of course, better brands are slightly better, lighter, and several times more expensive. But weight is still an issue, especially if you work a lot with them. Anyone who trims the hedge a little more talks about how his arms and shoulders hurt. You practically always have a tool in the air.
