    "The song is about how when people die, they will be regarded differently depending on the way they pass. Like, if I were to die from a drug overdose, everyone would say I deserved it because I abused drugs, hence the line ‘Angels deserve to die" - Daron Malakian (Guitarist/Singer)

    • @jacket5456
      @jacket5456 2 ปีที่แล้ว +18

      It's sad but true, most people probably would say "you deserved it" which is a pretty backwards view of addiction.

    • @neves_rebmun4741
      @neves_rebmun4741 2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Serj said that the lyrics of chop suey dont make sense especially the chorus, he went on to say that they couldnt think of what to write on the chorus and eventually they opened the bible went to a random page put his finger on a random sentence and that's how the "angels supposed to die"part and "father into your hands" "why have you forsaken me" parts came to be in the song.

    • @stephenmay2294

      @@neves_rebmun4741 Yeah, I heard that too, but what I posted was a quote

      That or Jesus basically committed suicide to prove a point.

    • @dab0331

      @@neves_rebmun4741 "i cry when angels deserve to die" is referring to FALLEN angels. When one hears "angels" they think of goodness. So what kind of angels deserve to die? Evil ones of course. And what's an evil angel? A fallen one; a devil.
      So it's essentially saying "I cry because I deserve to die since I'm a piece of shit demon who self righteously committed suicide."
      Essentially echoing how many Christians view ppl who commit suicide with contempt, instead of compassion.
      The reference to "Father into your hands I commend my spirit. Why have you forsaken me" are the last words of Jesus before he died, and is indirectly stating that, in a way, Jesus' death was a "self righteous" suicide by cop.
      So if people aren't going to judge Jesus l, why are they judging ordinary ppl who commit suicide?

      The line is - "when angels deserve to die..." the interpretation here is perhaps was this mean to be a question (an imploration, why did this happen) or a statement (all good is bad). For me, it was clear to me... but we all have equally valid reasons for interpreting art.

    SOAD are amazing, they have a lot of Armenian influences mixed in with their own style of rock / metal with deep meaning in their songs. I’ve been living in Armenia for the last 4 months and it’s an amazing country with all the adversity they’ve faced over the years. Love to Armenia 🇦🇲

    Hence 'Chop Suey' which was the bands FU to them - it worked out well!

      you say all this but lucifer was indeed according to Christian faith a fallen angel, and these lyrics legitimately quote some of Jesus of Nazareh's final documented words pre crucifixion. so yes it is plausible they are actually singing biblical angels here

    So i really love that you had an honest discussion about how you felt - that's what reaction videos are about. I will give my own take... this is about someone wondering - why do good people deserve to die (real - or metaphorically). And what does that mean for how "I" (the songwriter) feels. It could also be a good musical/artistic hook, that we shouldn't over-think. The point is, how did this song make 'you' feel? Edit - I've seen a lot of reaction video's to this song, and while no one's honest view/feeling should be ignored, I find that the secondary person (often a woman) actually really questions what the song means... they might not get it right (there is no 'right' for you) but you can see a literal honest processing. That's the most important thing on a reaction video (not someone that has obviously read a crap-tonne of comments/posts).

    In the most common terms, I think these verses reflects our human experiences spiritually. It can be hard to figure out how to take the experiences of this life through it all. Sometimes feeling forsakened.
    But peace and love to y’all and keep it up. It’s appreciated ✌🏽

    My brother passed away from a drug overdose. I know most of society would write him off but I know he was an angel and had a good heart and loved his family. They also reference Jesus' last words on the cross crying out to god (why have you forsaken me) (trust in my self righteous suicide) Jesus knew where his path was headed but knew what he needed to do.

    The part about “I cry when angels deserve to die” does not mean the misperception of viewing someone as a good person only to find out that they’re not. The meaning behind this line is it’s sad when good people end up dying by unfortunate means-suicide, overdose, or just pure happenstance-and it’s sad that “angels” are often taken advantage of, referring to the line of how they have to hide their scars away with makeup. Granted this is a song a free to interpretation but this is how I have personally always perceived the song.
