The song is about suicide, and how people will condemn, or mock people who are suicidal as if they are weak, and pathetic. The first verse is basically speaking about an unstable person with an unstable life. Well adjusted people from the outside looking in tend to believe that mentally/emotionally unstable people are exaggerating their issues for the sake of gaining sympathy, or attention, and believe they are a mess because of their own choice. Some people will go as far as to say that a suicidal person deserves to die without even considering the emotional impact of what they are saying about that person in such a vulnerable mental state, especially young people who are very insecure, impressionable, and haven't found themselves yet. This song holds even more validity in the age of the internet, and social media.
"During an interview, guitarist Daron Malakian explained the meaning of the song: "The song is about how we are regarded differently depending on how we pass. Everyone deserves to die. Like, if I were now to die from drug abuse, they might say I deserved it because I abused dangerous drugs. Hence the line, 'I cry when angels deserve to die.'""
This comment just gave me empathy for my bully in HS….she gave a 5 min speech of why SOAD was her favorite band and I think I understand why. Thank you for sharing your insight
You forgot to mention why the weird title. The original title, censored by the publishing company, was (caps are mine) "Self-righTEOUS SUIcide". If you pronounce and listed to the capitalized chars, they sound exactly the same as "Chop Suey". And as a polite middle-finger they included a scene eating "chop suey" into the musical video.
@@franzrogar chop suey, if u "chop" suicide in half, and add the "chop" part, LOL u get "chop suey" and it was censored due to concern over air play with 'suicide" in the title.
@@alexthemoonsloth no. The title is because of the pronunciation of the central lyric I talk about, as per SOAD themselves said. Nothing to chop here or there. The company didn't want "Self-righteous Suicide" as the song title and they used "teous sui" (center of it) that sounds exactly the same as "chop suey".
I’ve done nothing but watch SOAD react videos for the past three days because I’ve developed a bit of an addiction to their music. Appreciate and enjoyed your analysis.
I love System, but it's not really that hard to "synchronize note-for-note perfectly" when you're using Pro Tools and other digital wizardry in the studio. I've seen this song performed live, and while pretty darned good it was far from perfect, note-for-note synchronization.
There are so many layers in the last 40-50 second of the song, with, it's by far one of my favorite parts of any song when the piano and strings kick in. I know quite a few people who didn't even realize the piano and strings were there. The piano draws my attention every time, it becomes the focus of the music for me.
Great reaction, I think everyone who listens to this song remarks about how they've never heard anything like it before. Keep it going with SOAD, they really are a groundbreaking group in so many ways! I would suggest "Question!", "Sugar", "Hypnotize", "BYOB", "Holy Mountains", "Suggestions", and "IEAIAIO", not necessary in that order, for starters! 😊
Regarding that “C” section, you may be thinking of Jesus Christ Superstar. Both in the musical and biblically, Jesus’ last words on the cross were “eloi, eloi lama sabachthani?” (father, father, why have you forsaken me?) and “father, into your hands I commend my spirit”.
All the band members are of Armenian descent, either born to Armenian immigrants or immigrants themselves. They tend to incorporate some features that are found in Armenian music. Twill bring in scales that are not typically found in western music along with other elements.
This is the most energetic and most depressing song at the same time. SOAD just literally made a cult classic/incredible song! I will never forget this one!
I haven't done a deep dive into it yet but I wouldn't be surprised if a lot of SOAD's melodic and harmonious influence is from Armenian folk music. That is their heritage and a lot of their music is about the Armenian genocide.
If you get a chance, check out the isolated vocals/instrumentals of this song. There is way more going on than meets the ear, I only discovered this recently myself when a reactor actually had the isolated up. This band is not your typical garage junkies making noise. They are artists. This is one among many possible and likely reasons their music holds up to this day.
I just saw that same video the other day. I've heard this track countless times and never knew some of the vocals/instruments that are mixed in. Rick Rubin produced it, so I really wasn't overly surprised.
You might be thinking of the Weird Al Yankovic song "Angry White Boy Polka". He does a couple of verses from this song and it's very theatrical. It was pretty big in the early 2000s. I could be wrong that that's what you're thinking.
yeah the harmonies at the end are pure eargasm if i ever heard one !! i'm so excited that you've never heard SOAD before. so many amazing songs to come
So for the midsection “Father into your hands I commend my spirit” has a pretty crazy backstory: the singer Serj Tankian was having trouble coming up with ideas so he picked a book from the producer’s collection which happened to be the Bible. The line was randomly chosen by the singer and it happened to be Jesus’ last words on the cross.
New subscriber, loved your reaction and love System of a down, very unique band and unlike any. Looking forward to more SOAD 👍 not many people actually pay attention to details. You will like *Aerials*
LUKE 23:46 And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, into Thy hands I commend My spirit.” And having said thus, He gave up the ghost.

This isnt even their best song Shawka :) They are one of the few rock bands I love, Their Armenian (sp?) comes through in the vocals and adds a bit to it, in my opinion. If you need more System rec's ask Johnny, he's a HUGE SOAD fan :)
Ironic story about that part you said you've heard before and is an earworm....Serj, the singer, didn't have lyrics for that part of the song. So Rick Rubin told him to just grab a book from the bookshelf and open to a random page and point his finger, and that's what he got.
Fun fact: song was written by the guitarist; lyrics and all…except the bridge. The singer literally grabbed a book, pointed to a line, and those words made the bridge vocals. Will post the source under this comment.
The story of thise lyrics is: Rick Ruben (producer) says in a podcast that Serj picked a random book out his library to find lyrics for a section of Chop Suey and landed on the phrase: Father, into your hands I commend my spirit Father, into your hands Why have you forsaken me? In your eyes forsaken me In your thoughts forsaken me In your heart forsaken me This is from the Crucifixion scene in the Bible. I think it's used in Jesus Christ Superstar as well
First time listener to your reaction videos, you have an interesting viewpoint and I look forward to checking out your other videos. If you haven't heard it, I'd like to see your reaction to Devin Townsend's "Why", the best version would be the live broadcast he did to raise money for the Vancouver Hospital Foundation (there's a QUARANTINE sign in the background of the video).
"Jesus called out with a loud voice,'Father into your hands I commit my spirit' When he said this,he breath his last" (Luke 23:46) He was quoting from scripture " Into your hand I commit my spirit"( Psalms 31:5). And about the ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, saying " My God,My God, why have you forsaken me ?" ( Matthew 27:46).
The only part of being raised in a mega church that’s been helpful in my life is the ability to recall scripture and identify religious themes in art, culture, etc…otherwise it’s traumaaaa 😂😂😂
