There's a whole book in just that one phrase of her: "He beats me too." I had the very great honor of sitting with her between sets just months before she died. Rest in peace, Lovely Billie.
@@ungradphysmath7438 Hi. I'm not DHL1930 anymore. But back to Billie. I was a fifteen-year-old musician at the time, and went with two friends to see her at this little hole in the wall club in Newark named Sugar Hill. Anyway, one of my pals, a good-looking black guy, requested a song (I forget which), and Billie answered in that raspy voice of hers, "Man, that only sold one record." To which my pal answered, "Then I'm the guy who bought it." Anyway, that got a laugh out of her. She'd taken a liking to my friend, and so she'd sit with us between sets. But she was very high, strung out, and needed to be helped onto the stage by her piano player, Mal Waldron. Still, as always, she sang beautifully. While she was with us, she didn't speak much, mostly just sat, and with what seemed to me a deep sadness in her eyes. Remember, this was a time when she was being hunted out by the powers that be. That's why she was even there singing in that tiny club in the first place. They'd taken away her Cabaret license and wasn't allowed to perform in NY anymore. Anyway, those were the circumstances under which I met this loveliest of ladies, Lady Day. And I'll never forget her.
Wow that had to be a wonderful pleasure! 💯🥰 My grandmother met her also outside of the Cotton Club. They couldn't go in because it was segregated. Billie truly Sang from the heart. 😍
The transparent pyramid is a deal breaker for me. There is ‘a man that is not worthy but you love him anyway’ and then there’s ‘so he’s committed all the worst crimes known to mankind in possessing that third eye in his head and inhabiting vicariously the vessels of others’. Also there’s a love triangle which might be a problem and then there’s millions of people are in that triangle and I’m cutting my losses. I miss when these songs meant something and human beings were free and not utterly vicious, ruthless and invasive..
People may say she didn’t have a great voice, or it wasn’t as strong as Sarah Vaughn, or as sophisticated as Ella Fitzgerald. But Billie was Raw, and full of Emotions. She has so much pain and Sadness you can hear it her voice. She had the power to touch you with the emotions. That’s way she’s so great, and that’s why she’s my Favourite. She was the first jazz singer I fell in love with. And every time I hear a song, with that voice, I’m that’s Lady Day. My favourite Album is Lady in Satin. She was getting sick, and lost a lot of her voice. But if you hear the album. She still could move you.

This song speaks for the women that love their significant other, even if he's mistreated her, and the optimism towards the end is what breaks me. Because that's exactly how these things go down. The woman suffers but then tricks herself in to thinking it's okay (maybe she thinks she can change his ways) and sticks around because she is still hopeful and still loves him. Such a sad song. One thing people forget about Billie Holiday, is not just the unbelievably inequality of her voice, but goodness gracious she could she enunciate a phrase. She made it look so easy this idea that it was almost lazy and yet her enunciation of every word everything she did was off the charts. Who here doesn't know every lyric she sang, and in that unique way but it was fucking crystal clear

This is so incredible, I can't get enough. I switch back and forth between Diana Ross, (live) and it's never a comparison, Lady Day is raw and unfettered, Ms Ross is smooth updated. Awesome! Bravo both! the Radman
It cost me a lot
But there's one thing that I've got
It's my man
It's my man
Cold or wet
Tired, you bet
All of this I'll soon forget
With my man
He's not much on looks
He's no hero out of books
But I love him
Yes, I love him
Two or three girls
Has he
That he likes as well as me
But I love him
I don't know why I should
He isn't true
He beats me, too
What can I do?
Oh, my man, I love him so
He'll never know
All my life is just a spare
But I don't care
When he takes me in his arms
The world is bright
All right
What's the difference if I say
I'll go away
When I know I'll come back
On my knees someday
For whatever my man is
I'm his forevermore

A maioria das mulheres ja passaram por relacionamentos abusivos e essa música é o hino.
Genius of deepness, meaning, her music is the sound of the soul.
I've always loved this song sung by Billie. This is the first time I've ever actually seen her sing it, and I still have goose bumps as I write.

One of my top 5 songs, have to listen to this song once a week. Brings a tear to the eye.

happy 100th birthday, Billie ♥
Billy, you're still the greatest Lady of Harlem! I love your voice and performance. You where a very special woman.... I want to thank you for that.
This version cuts me right to the heart. It really transcends words.
you can feel everything she sings, just close your eyes and listen to that .. it's timeless!
Out of this world
Her voice is magic sensual and her perfection stays through the Eternity
Thank you Billie for what I try to learn from you
I love her she makes me cry and cry !
Lulubelle Padieu me to sob sob 😂
I am Brazilian, I like good music. It was the myth of the music made her mark with her voice and beautiful songs. I am twenty eight years when I see artists of that rarity, my heart is glad and my aqueta.
i just love her voice its so soothing
Rocsil! Your experience of this song tells me that you still can enjoy of things you Felt when you were young which means that you haven`t lost all of that original and pure sincerityness we all Feel in early childhood. That`s ability most people should think about. I Think there`s lot honesty in you. Makes me feel good to know there`s persons like you in this world. Thank you!
Oh billie, I'm still waiting for my man!
The same for me
same for me
i'm here
Truly a gifted artist, who put her imprint on whatever she sang. This performance is so on point, it's one of my favorites.
She is the greatest.
My absolute favorite of Ms. Holiday!!! Thank you soooo much for posting.
