I wish I could, but her voice and sound comes across as so sad to me. Now Sarah Vaughan and Ella Fitzgerald are Supreme to me! But nobody can grip me the way Billie did, when she sang about lynching in the South! That song rips your heart out, for the folks who had one!
@@marjorjorietillman856 Her voice IS sad, that's why they call it "Blues". Nothing artificial or gimmicky about her voice or phrasing. That's why I love her, she is REAL and all that comes through in her voice. Now I love Ella and Sarah not to mention Carmen McRae, Anita O'Day, Peggy Lee and so many others but Billie Holiday is totally in league of her own. There is no one even remotely like her because she was the embodiment of her music, not just a performer of music.
@@Alpha-Andromeda What? your comment makes no sense. Are you saying that if someone commits a crime the FBI will only arrest them if they don't "love their voice"? I just love her music and the influence she had on blues in general. I don't have time for personal BS. It's none of my business, nor is it yours.
I'll second that, Judy and Billie very different singers, but they both sang with a level of emotion. every word from the heart, no other singers come close. You might want to listen to Judy singing 'Ol Man River' or 'Alone Together' both on youtube.
She is the maria callas of the Jazz.. those two big artists are unique, unreachbele for the others..in this profession.. both, each one on their own side, are of the highest peak of art. With no one to compare...Robert kreis, entertainer in Germany.
Wonderful. Recorded the year before I was born. I've since learned that there was a second jazz club right across the street from the location pictured at about 1:30. You could choose between MIles Davis or Errol Garner across the street. I was born too young for that surplus of greatness.
Aughhh....I love her singing so much. This live set is magnificent. What a night! What singing! What swinging! I was spellbound with this performance. I'd love to find this on CD or vinyl. Thanks for sharing!
Billie Holiday at George Wein's Storyville (1953). Solamente 38 anni a quel tempo. La sua voce non lo dice. Lady nel cuore❤ Wonderf pic never seen be4 ❤ A video to listen to. magnificent live voice color and swinging great, at times a little bit deliciously naughty. She was Lady, one of her very Ladies that night. Singing, swinging, laughing, enjoying mockeries, mannerisms to almost self-imitation. Lady plays Lady, maybe too much and maybe 'cause the accompaniment doesn't take her to carry high the torch the way Oscar Peterson did in the magnificent challenging album Recital, Clef Series. Here, we have Lady after a rendez vous and before another one; abysmal dates with her shining lights and deep bright darkness shadows. However skin to skin with the audience However skin to skin with the audience . Who wouldn’t want to be there that night? Lady’s Lady. Only 38 years old then. Her voice doesn't say that. My heart belongs to Lady ❤

Is it true what i think -- at 12:25 -- Lady's getting some old tulips out of the audience, but she can't remember the name of Amsterdam ? 'What's that town in Europe -- Where they put them in a vase ---' A man's voice answers, which i can't understand . . .
Canale già bloccato in quanto ripetitivo e invasivo, ma che continua a ripresentarsi, peraltro sempre col medesima video. Ovviamente, prescindendo dai miei interessi personali, non seguirò niente, dato quanto è infestante.
Sounds like I am in the audience! Smoke swirling in the air. What piano accompaniment!
How could you not fall in love with that voice?

You can’t
How? Ask the FBI of her time. They definitely didn’t.

The Queen of melancholy empress Billie Holiday .👑💜
she expresses so much emotion in her singing. im either dancing or about to cry when i listen. so awesome
she had a quality like Judy Garland. They both made songs sound so sad. Loved them both.

La Maria Callas du jazz... Excellente formule 👍👌
....never too late for some Billie ......
I think after all I have heard about Billie, she is one person that I would have loved to have a drink with.

She is such a class act

Billie es una de esas mujeres que inspiran a las cantantes por su honestidad y forma de cantar sin rebusques ni artificios. Gracias! Gran video.
I listen to “Willow Weep for Me” from this show all the time. My favorite recording of the song.
She sounds strong maybe a few cocktails
Mine too! It's actually the only version I listen to going back to this being a Cassette...lol. I played this concert all day every day in College.
too marvelous for words
Love you Billie
This is probably the most personal video I've watched (and heard). I truly felt a part of the audience.
Aughhh....I love her singing so much. This live set is magnificent. What a night! What singing! What swinging! I was spellbound with this performance. I'd love to find this on CD or vinyl. Thanks for sharing!

Really interesting document. The pianist is out to lunch during the intro of "I Loves You Porgy" (also during the bridge).

I could not❤
I thought the Storyville club was situated in the Buckminster Hotel in Kenmore Square, Boston.
You are correct! It seemed like a strange location for Jazz, but George was right.

Grande Billie Holiday - Meravigliosa - favolosa.
Poor Billie. Couldn't realise how bad hard drugs are. Strong soul though .
To blend a story with raw and formidle talent. That's something. To keep vulgarity and politics out of is what THE BEST. Do.
Is it true what i think -- at 12:25 -- Lady's getting some old tulips out of the audience, but she can't remember the name of Amsterdam ?
'What's that town in Europe -- Where they put them in a vase ---' A man's voice answers, which i can't understand . . .
She’s asking “what’s that town in Europe where the women wear masks on their faces ? “That’s not Europe “ “oh right “.
I Never Cared For Her Singing. But I Loved Her Band!
You don't see ladies like that my mother had that look she was mean as hell. 😮
7:20
"Porgy" not "Paulie"
This is good
But the 1954
Concert from
Germany she was in
Better voice

Conveys well, but tired of these standards - even by her. The songbook passé by 2024 ...?
A unique one of a kind talent.
