Freestyle Libre 3 Review - 'Just Good'

  • Freestyle Libre 3- it is the smallest, lightest CGM and I think it is just good. In this review, I dig into all areas of Libre 3 from the brand new design of Libre 3 sensor to Abbott's decision to eliminate their reader and embrace a fully digital sensor experience. This sounds amazing to many but we should not create technology that creates barriers to people- Android users, children, people without phones, people with jobs where they carry their personal phone due to security reasons... the list goes on. #inclusionbydesign

I have been a diabetic for 39 years. Two years ago I decided to give the Dexcom G6 a try. I love it, absolutely love it. I then decided to give the Omnipod a try. Again, I absolutely love it. I'm excited for the future of Dexcom and Omnipod. I can't wait for the G7 and the "closed loop" that will finally be available. All this coming from someone that remembers peeing on a test strip to test your blood sugar. The future is looking bright for all of us. I can't wait to see what's in store. Keep doing these great video, sending your knowledge out to everyone is a definite deciding factor in why I chose the products that I did. I don't know why I waited so long to make the change from injections and finger sticks to the pod and the CGM. Thank you so much for everything you do. Stay strong and diabetes on my friend.

Nathan, The Omnipod Eros and Dexcom G6 can already be used together to form a hybrid loop system with Loop (iOS) or AndroidAPS (Android). No need to wait. #wearenotwaiting

The Dexcom G6 does interface with the Tandem t:slim X2 pump. If Control IQ is available in your location with the t:slim pump, it is a very good system.

You won't get compression loads if you position the sensor on the inside of your arm not on the outside where you cannot easily avoid sleeping on it. Also you won't be bumping it on things (like door frames), Also be wary of the libre and dexcom G7 of continual signal loss because of no scanning, the qouted distances of 6&10 meters are very optmistic

Your style has matured nicely. I say that because I first became aware of you about four to five years ago when I started to use the original Libre. I needed some guidance so I turned to Google. I'm in the US so you Brits were/are ahead of us. Once I learned what your videos taught me, I guess I just drifted away. Two months ago Abbott sent me email to get a 'free' Libre2 reader. Needless to say, I got it! I do love the new alarms, they keep me honest. Today, 11/19/21, I saw your TH-cam review on the Libre3. I'd buy it just for the reduced size. Honestly, the Libre system has been an instrumental aid in maintaining my 6.6 A1c. Thank you for being there.

Great review, thank you. Here is a trick that I have used to improve accuracy for both Dexcom and Libre in the first 24 hours. The day before my current sensor is going to expire, I apply a new one but *don't activate it*. This gives my body a day to heal from the insertion trauma. When my current sensor expires, I activate the one that I placed the day before. For Dexcom, this brings my bad data down from 24-36 hours to just 4-8 hours. If I don't do this, Dexcom is terrible for the first day or two, like 40-60 mg/dl off. Without fail, it tells me I'm at 45 mg/dl (2.5mmol/L) for hours, and it's just wrong and distressing.
I started on Libre 2 at diagnosis and switched to Dexcom when I got my insulin pump. They both have pros and cons, and you do a good job of covering them. I miss how the Libre app keeps all of its data in one app, unlike Dexcom which has a separate app for the reader and Clarity data. It's much harder to review historic data in Dexcom, imo. But both companies clearly are not in the software business. Still, I'm very grateful to have been diagnosed at a time when these great tools are available!

That's a really interesting idea that I haven't seen anywhere else! Is there a trade off with day 11 performance?
I really hate how the hardware and software are tied so closely. Imagine the innovation we might see if anyone were allowed to develop software using the output from the different sensors on the market.

I have the same issues with the dexcom… it constantly will tell me I’m low during the first day. That’s another reason why I restart my sensors. I’m not restarting them because I have to but because I can get around the first couple of days of inaccuracy

I've been applying the FSL2 24 hours before activation for at least 2 years with Libre 2, and it works really well. You don't lose a day of function as the battery lasts for at least 15 days in my experience.

Thanks I learn something today the accuracy improve with time,
I initially though they were accurate when you were stable, but they were exaggerating variation a lot!!, so really useless for insulin calculation.
I tested the dexcom 6, but rejected it because 1) the bluetooth sensor price was ridiculous 2) they were advocating that the sensor was good enough for insulin calculation. But a couple of week testing showed that it was as accurate ( or inaccurate) as the libre.
Both of them are good for trend/ alert but not for insuling calculation, ( my son is not using a pump)
    thanks again for your review

I recently got to try the g6 which alarms and always on notification (i'm on android, unsupported, tho)i really liked.
but i also got quite some spread with my measuring on fsl2 (right arm) and g6 (left arm). the only time they were close, was in the target range from 90- 140...
in my experience the FSL2 Alarms unfortunately dont come through my phones vibrate settings.... quite dissappointing!

Call me a negative Nancy, but I say make the units more accurate instead of smaller. Get the Engineers and doctors to work on that instead of how "cute" it is. Id rather have somthing on my arm the size of my cellphone if it were as accurate as my BG finger stick meter. Yeah it's great that's its smaller and compression lows are a thing of the past, so you can tell what they worked on since the libre 2. But I finger stick more with my libre 2 than I did before having it, just to double check the readings since I can't trust them. Sorry for the negativity. 47yrs with diabetes. I'm under control, but not because of the libre 2. Best of luck to all the diabetics in here. I love you guys and wish you the best of health! ❤️

    @bIoooIb 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

I am already using the Libre 3 and there are a few things I really don’t like. The app is really not that good. Adding to the list of things you already said:
-The past bg levels are only saved when you either add something like Insulin to the protocol or you had an alarm. You can’t go back in time and see your old values when you don’t have (manual) entries.- Edit: Just discovered the days overview. Guess I’ve overlooking that option 🙈 Still annoying though that you can’t scroll through time smoothly but have to switch days.
I miss the ability to snooze an alarm for a certain period of time.
The sensors have a rather short expiration date. Therefore Abbott only send me 4 sensors and I’ll have to wait until a few days before the last sensor expires until I get new sensors. If a sensor is malfunctioning or falling of ahead of time I won’t be able to get a replacement in time…

I put the sensor on the front of my arms & make sure the alcohol is dry before applying the sensor. A pharmacist told me to not remove the applicator right away, but hold it tight against the sensor for 10 seconds (I probably hold it for 20 & roll the edge of the applicator against the tape while waiting, & then slowly roll the applicator off). Can you sleep on the side where the sensor isn't? When applying a replacement sensor, use the other arm & use different spots up & down your arm.

I'm coming up to my annual G6 subscription renewal, so it's good to know that Libre doesn't have a compelling reason for me to go back to them. The fact that they still don't let you adjust the graphs is ridiculous. I leave my G6 graph on six hours most of the time when in landscape mode; I found the Libre graph to be pretty much useless when I used it.

I‘m a long time libre user and I have the Libre 3 and I had the Dexcom g6 for testing.
What really annoys me with the Libre is that:
    1. the Libre Alarms just stop after a certain amount of time
    2. there is no possibility so have the glucose levels as a Widget or on the apple watch (besides the notifications, which just stop after some time)
    3. sometimes the libre tells me I‘m e.g. 79mg/dl with a down trend and then I eat sth and two minutes later it is at 100mg/dl and it doesn’t even show the 79mg/dl in the graph! Like it’s not loyal to it’s own readings!
    4. there is no reader! I‘m now super dependent on my phone and have to carry it with me all the time. This doesn’t seem like a big deal, but see this:
Since the alarms only show up when I‘m too high or low, I still have to open my phone and look at my readings. This is fairly the same process as with the libre 2, except that with the libre 2 I had to actively scan the sensor, but I had a second reader. And the difference between opening my phone and see the reading and opening the phone, scanning the sensor and then see the reading is not too big. So if with the libre 3 my phone battery dies or it gets stolen, I have to buy an replacement iPhone asap?!
    5. the connection is very poor sometimes. Like, I put on a sensor before going to bed and unitl the next morning at 10 it always said „connection lost“, so I put on a spare libre 2 and woops - 1 hour later the libre 3 worked, wtf.
The user interface with the dexcom really is a whole lot better. It worked better in basically every aspect for me, except for it’s size and life expectancy (?) (I‘m sorry, english is my 2nd language)
I‘m used to Libre, so I‘ll continue using Libre, but I will always have some Libre 2 laying around so I have a reliable fail safe.
    Greetings from germany

    Interesting review!👍🏼👍🏼
So no reader for the FL3 🤔🤔🤔...
Ok, let's put it this way.
My son is currently using FL2. Now, if he's having readings that are not consistent with how he feels, he just grab a precision neo strip and take a "dextro" using the very same FL2 reader!!
    Hello Abbott!!!
Taking a dextro when you suspect your sensor (OR ANY CGM) it's not giving you real numbers it's a must!!!
If I have both technologies into one device, why should I get rid of it???
We all have Android phones in our family.
Why should I have to buy an iPhone to scan the FL3 sensors? Are you serious? I mean, it's really useful to have all the data in your phone at a glance. But...
What do you think my insurance company will say to me when I tell them that I need an iPhone for my son so he can continue scanning his glucose sensors?
"Sure, why not? Do you want it with unlimited data too?"
    Come on!
Now, with that being said. My son also use the "day before technique" (inserting a new sensor a day before the one in use expires). When activating the new one, it really gives him more accurate readings immediately.

    • @Nerdabetic
      @Nerdabetic  2 ปีที่แล้ว

FreeStyle Libre 3 is not yet available in the US but much of what you had to say about it applies as well to the Libre 2. Accuracy wise I have seen a huge drop in accuracy and dependability in the Libre 2 over the past few months. Initially I found Libre 2 accuracy quite impressive. Over the first month of use I constantly checked it against my Bayer fingerstick system and time after time it was within just a few points. This was even true on day one. Over the past few months, however, the Libre 2 has consitently been reading 20-40 points higher than my Bayer meter. Worse yet I have had 3 readers go bad and several sensors as well. While I intially wondered if it was "just me" other Libre 2 users have reported similar problems. I can't help but wonder if the bean counters at Abbott have been cutting corners to increase profits but if the problems continue I will be switching to a different system. And from the sound of your review accuracy with the Libre 3 still leaves much to be desired.

It does work with Android and Apple now, and hopefully soon a PC app without having to go through a emulsion app like LD player. I also like the fact that my wife can look in on it, which makes her feel better and less stressed while at work. No more having to go in to the Dr for adjustments on Insulin, since the reports are clouded and the Dr can see them with permission. Is it the best thing since peanut butter? No, but a huge step in the right direction.

The title should be 'Just NOT Good', I'm normal and I wanted to try Freestyle just to understand how my glucose is moving, so I did a glucose curve in laboratory to compare the result of the interstitial glucose measured by the sensor, the result that came from the sensor were all screwed, the sensor was applied on the arm as suggested by Abbott and there was no pressure in any time, the readings from the sensor were crazy, the result (sensor minus lab test) are this: 23, 37, 64, 41, 41, 36, 19 (basal and 6 lab measures), for example in basal the lab was 88 and the sensor measured 111, difference: 23 , as you see in the numbers they are not even linear, so is impossible to calibrate this crap sensor, is totally useless, don't waste you money in this stuff.
With this sensor you can only understand if your glucose goes up or down, that's it, you will never know how much.

Don't fall for this system. They have redicules delivery rules, so you'll have to walk to miles away post stations to pick up your sensors. Diliveries to the nearest post office gets refused because it can't be guaranteed that the sensors aren't stored in 40°C whilst we have winter temperatures. Support has no authority so you will have to look for another product to make you don't die in the meantime. They don't care at all about your health! Other than that, quality of the sensors is so bad, it'll kick you out of bed at 3am alarming low sugar, when in fact your sugar is just fine!
