It's amazing to think that barely 4 months had passed between Ian's suicide and this gig. They grieved, composed new songs, tried to figure out the lyrics to Ceremony and rehearsed long enough to be able to get their act together as New Order and go to America (as planned 4 months before!) to play this strange mix of old/new sounds to a crowd that was probably expecting Joy Division songs thrown in between.

Singing is hellish, but if your lead singer and mate has just killed himself 4 months earlier, what balls to carry on. Brilliant.

Listening to Movement, or any other footage of early New Order is heartbreaking. I'm pretty sure they were very heartbroken and confused back then.

The rehearsal versions recorded by Joy Division sound like this too, much “heavier” sounding than the New Order b-side. I don’t really know how to describe it, but somehow the synth sounds more grating on this version, whereas it sounds dreamy and atmospheric on the studio version.

I've always been fascinated about the existence of this first US tour. I'm deeply appreciative of this upload. And I'm a huge New order fan but from one N.O fan to another, this is a bit of a mess. I just finally heard the first Chicago appearance in 1983, it's on TH-cam and it's a tremendous evolution from this. I mean this criticism with the utmost respect. I love everything about New Order, except maybe for the fact that Hooky is not in it anymore.

Sam Wulfekotter me too but I think he said they all sucked at singing and playing at the same time, and it was more natural to have the guitar come in and out alternating with the vocals ( which they’d already been doing anyway). It wouldn’t have worked as well to do that with the bass, the bass and drums need to keep driving the song.

Yeah, poor Steve is taking much hits on his vocals (especially on Procession) - but in fairness - "Procession " was new and the vocal melody was not established to follow clearly. For a beginner singer - this is not easy to just pull off as w/o a guide vocal melody line - good luck improvising live and sounding decent. "Truth" comes off well - as Steve had the most practice clearly on that one. For "Ceremony" - if Steve did not have to manage the monumental task for keeping that beat - he would have done better like the demo. But playing that live and singing without screwing up the pace or a missing a beat - hats off to him! I'd actually like to see of Phil Collins or Don Henley could sing and play "Ceremony" live without sacrificing something in performance. Shame Ian could not have made this trip as he would have loved it and maybe got him out of his whirlpool that was taking him down at the time.

Two misconceptions in the comments below
1/ The lads actually got over Ian's death a lot faster than you are all imagining. The interviews lay bare to this that after a few weeks it was all about survival
2/ The lads had bills to pay and reputation to keep so they had little choice but to go to America which Ian was dreading going to. He despised everything America stood for. Atrocity Exhibition.

I found it online years ago, on some blog. Still have the mp3. It's mostly drums and vocals only. Stephen drums and sings the lyrics off key and says "Can we have the next bit on the bass guitar?" and then Hook plays in the background, along with some synth. After a while, Stephen says "And there we have the other bass bit again" and continues singing. And then the song stops.

This is just a personal opinion but right off the first verse it’s interesting that I think Bernard felt pressured to try and sound like Ian. I don’t know if he fully felt confident in himself or what the three were continuing to do at that point, RIP Ian you are loved and missed everyday.

All 3 sang alternatively and Steve actually sung the most, Hook mentions this in his book

I can't see clearly, is Bernard the one in the artwork? Whoever he is, he looks preety much like Ian.

That would have been the Beach Club in the UK in July 1980, although under the guise of The No-Names.

U'd be better off with no description. None of this has anything to do with New Order.

The video description...'the original owner of this channel was an annoying bitch but the music is too good to take down, here is another bootleg although it was originally uploaded by a fellow named NintendoSegaSonyGuy or something like that, anyways since his channel got assraped by youtube, might as well keep this gem up.' - a) the only person who cares is admin and b) it makes him/her look like really self-obsessed, bitchy and petty minded
