Hey, I tutored college students, so I find myself ahead a bit; but I recently was offered a job to tutor/teach middle school students online. I don't have a teaching certification, I have a pre-law degree and I am going to school for an MSW. But I was wondering what 6-8th graders should be learning in ELA. I have to put a small lesson together for the interview. What I have is the story "Old Man at the Bridge" by Ernst Hemingway. It is a short short (about 760-some words); my lesson is has the structure of: learning annotation with the 5 'w's, understanding characterization from the annotations, and then to possibly (at the end) what is the overall theme of the story. (I hope the structure makes sense to you). I am not sure how much time I am going to spend with the actual students, so I may be able to choose full books, like The Giver, Bridge to Terabithia, Freak the Mighty etc. I was wondering if you think this is what they are learning; if I'm too far a head or too behind, please let me know; I would love the feed back. I'm a person who has spent the past year studying the LSAT, so I don't want to make it too complex. Thank you.
