    To properly install the pump you need to hang it by the two studs and lightly tightened nuts, then you need to force it against the cylinder head and install the bolts. Doing it like in the video (angling it in) will *always* end up with a leaky top gasket.

    • @LongbowMedia
      @LongbowMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Well, that explains why I had to reset the pump the first time 😂
      Also, For anyone else reading this: To test the pump for leaks, the pulley and belts must be attached, otherwise the pump won't....pump.
      I got the order wrong in the video....Carry on, folks.

      @@LongbowMedia It's always good to also check the coolant pipe for any corrosion and if required to address that before installing the new gasket and pump. Without that being done you could end up with a leak there, too. Many also coat the new paper gasket with a sealant to help prevent any leaks from the cheap gaskets provided with many aftermarket water pumps.

      @@LongbowMediaYou can also make cheap tool from piece of metal and 5 bolts and spin the water pump with a impact wrench without engine being on and belts in place

    When you say reset the tension on the alternator belts with a tension screw and set screw, what exactly does that mean? I am fairly new to cars and just need a bit more clearing up on that before I go ahead and do this. thanks

    Well detailed and informational video. When checking for leaks after filling with coolant, I believe the belts should be installed so that the pump is actually moving coolant.

      You are right, the belts will need to be installed to run the pump to check for leaks.

    Dear Longbow media,
    Just can't thank you enough for your brilliant, well documented and photographed tutorial. Will do the job on my 88 240.
    Do you recommend using ultra blue gasket maker to both sides of water pump gasket? In appreciation for your video, All the best and blessings from New Rochelle N.Y. Bruce the swimmer

    Do you know places to find replacement plastic parts for the interior? many of mine have broken and am looking for a way to find new one but it seems to be very scarce

    • @LongbowMedia
      @LongbowMedia  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      The folks at VP Auto Parts are pretty good at sourcing scarce parts. Craigslist and Ebay are also good for trying to find NOS parts over time.

      Wagonmeister also has some interior plastics for 240s, don't remember what all he has off the top of my head

    Hi, I see you use yellow coolant liquid. I currently use the blue coolant (in the last 22 yrs :-) ). Am I wrong? can I cause any damage? Any advantage in using the yellow one? thanks

    • @LongbowMedia

      I am actually using Prestone Green Universal Antifreeze. (The camera's white-balance might have been slightly off, giving it a yellow-tint) The Volvo Green Book specifies Phosphate-Free Green or Blue Coolant.

    Hi, I’m wondering what the rod on top is for, which you can see at the end of the video. It connects the bulkhead and the engine compartement. Does it stabilize the engine compartement or something? And does it have a specific name? We can’t find the part on the internet :)

    • @LongbowMedia
      @LongbowMedia  3 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      I'm assuming you are referencing the strut tower and firewall braces?
      If so, mine are made by Wagonmeister in CA. Here's the video i made showing installation: th-cam.com/video/bkczWvoabI8/w-d-xo.html
      They help stiffen/stabilize the front end.
