Great job! As for those crank bolts, I would highly recommend investing in a Milwaukee fuel impact gun. They are a bit pricey but it will make the removal process so much easier.

That original coolant is almost double here.
The cheaper option for us is Prestone.
Just replaced my 240's timing belt on its B230K. Damn the belt tensioner spring on her was a hour long job, getting back on 😅 thanks for the great video, to follow along with 👍

A Days work Mate! done this years ago to my 240 its a time consuming job removing the fan and shroud and all sorts to get to the belt all the seals would be better replaced at that time anyway. great video Mate!😎😎

I've just wiggled an allen wrench up in flywheel bellhousing where the plastic covers are at the bottom, that jams the crank from turning in order to get that bolt off and back on .. but that grabber tool you have there is nice to have. For some reason allen wrench stayed in place better than a screwdriver or other handy tool.

Good job. About time you upgraded to 1/2 drive. The old trick to remove crankshaft bolts when you don't have an impact wrench. Is to jam your extension bar on the ground or against a chassis member. Then hit the starter. Make sure of course be the bar is on the right. .lol

@@Involvod .nothing to worry about the fly wheel to the starter gives massive torque. Much more than an impact wrench. Like the old song " Somethings got to give" lol
Been driving red blocks for 20 years, presently own more than 20 of them. Never changed a timing belt, not one! Never had one snap either... I should not be tempting fate should I. Also never had an oil leak at the front of the motor on these.

@@Involvod I've found that Volvo still stocks most of the parts that I need for my 740. I always go with 'Volvo Genuine Parts' when available. If not available I go with either RockAuto OE/OEM parts or FCP Euro OE/OEM parts. Hard to beat any of those suppliers or parts manufacturers.

When I did the timing belt on my 1989 244 (and seals) I recall the bolt being very tight. I had 1/2" impact sockets at the time but I'd lent out my MAC breaker bar and forgotten I'd done so like two decades prior. (Wasn't gonna track that person down halfway across the country)
My poor old regular Craftsman 1/2" with two slipped-together pipes did the trick.
I'm still amazed as to how tough my 1980s era Craftsman stuff is.

I used to work on ground equipment in the military. Working on ground heaters with brass fittings and solid lines so you had to clock the brass fitting to line up with the solid fuel line. I can’t tell you how many Brass fitting I broke off in 15 years. It is never fun breaking tools or equipment.

Great job... that crankshaft bolt was tight! Over the years having lost so much skin from my knuckles I am a big believer in levers to gain a mechanical advantage.... I keep bits of tube that slip over my breaker bar to make life easier... I can only imagine the horror on Miss Involvod's face when she was questioning what a breaker bar is for.. Enjoyed the video.

@@dbt2787 Yup, they're great and indeed only sell Volvo and Saab parts. Sadly they aren't big enough to remake some of the less common parts, but still.
They definitely earned a place for their sticker on my car ;)
I'll occasionally get stuff from them when it isn't available from the usual VP&IPD/eBay sources.
I'd only be worried about the breaker bar if you were Scouse, Brummies aren't quite THAT bad! Loved the short drive at the end, you should consider doing a video where you just take a nice drive and ramble about something.
No in Birmingham it's a straight car jacking, in broad daylight, no need to break stuff! 😃
Nice video! I do the tensioner reset once a year just in case. I believe the most important thing is to do it the first time after a couple of hundred miles in the road, then should be OK. Regards, Nacho.

Great video there is a noise from the timing belt being too tight you should be able to twist the belt a 1/4 turn to lose the noise hope this helps i had a 1979 240 dl saloon and a 1992 940 GL saloon the 940 I bought non runner had an oil in the distributor repaired the leak took it for m.o.t. to see what was needed it passed the test lol ran that car for 10 years just the usual maintenance I found the exhaust system did not last much more than a couple of years there are quite a few Volvo cars here in Thailand in very good condition I retired here 2011 keep up the good work take care now

Nice video and good work! I’m sure your 1/2” comes in handy more often. Got all the different sizes too. Handy to be able to choose depending on the sort of job that needs to be done. Always good to invest in good tools, makes it easier too.

Nice job! I suggest letting that tensioner resettle after the bolt has done a few hundred km's.
Because that new belt will stretch a bit. After that it'll be fine for many thousands of km's.

@@Involvod if you look at the cover there is even a special rubber gromet in it that you can take out to access the tensioner stud+nut.
Makes it even easier.
My pulley bolt on my b200f was so tight I dented the drivers wing trying to undo it,and that's using the special tool and a 2 ft breaker bar !

B23 165nm and on B230 60nm plus 90 degrees on the crankshaft bolt. It should feel about the same. Good work!

never used these tools, away with the radiator, on with the inpact and sometimes little acetylenheat do the work, used to work with these volvos on nearly daily bases in sweden when these cars newer and dont forget do loosen the tensioner when the engine is hot, otherwise you fast stretch the belt

I just put a breaker bar on the crank pully bolt then brace the handle against the frame and crank it over. breaks free so easy.
I need to give that a go some day, just don't like the thought of it 😅

@@Involvod 'The Volvo Owners Club of the UK' does not recommend that method - you can break the keyway on the bottom crankshaft. Just a word of warning. :)
I’m commenting before seeing the aftermath, but it’s more likely for the socket to break than that 1/2-3/8 reducer since it looks like it’s rated for impact

You do need 1/2" drive for anything like that. An impact gun is also very handy.

You will think that in 2022; you would know about a impact gun, and impact socket, either air tools or battery impact Milwaukee impact tools, as much as you work on these cars it would be wise to invest in some tools
Might be wise but also very costly. The M18 impact is around 300€ WITHOUT even batteries or charger. A breaker bar starts at only 25€.
You may not like this suggestion. But.I've just come from a Fully Charged YT vid about Transition One. This is a French start up who intent to make kits for EV conversion for different model cars. (I think you know what's coming) Well I've noticed that you are "doer",
you do things. Combined with the fact that EVs are coming. So if your fixing these lovely old Volvos to be classics great, keep going. But if you're open to changes, the classic red block Volvo is a great candidate for electrification. (bonus: no more fixing oil leaks, etc).
As well, the classic Volvo as an EV will suddenly be at the leading edge and will stay there and will have an extended life beyond what it will do as an ICE car.
I am considering converting my 240GLE sedan. I know its been done before but the battery technology is rapidly improving. There is a 240 in Australia converted about 10 or 15 years ago. They put the battery in the back seat after removing said back seat. Now it's a 2 seater. Great. Not. I will keep the back seat thanks and limit the range.
Anyway, just an idea. What do you think?
Hey, I also need to answer this in the upcoming Q&A vid I'm going to do, but in short, I'm all for it! I wouldn't want to swap out a Redblock unless I absolutely had to, but the idea of an electric brick is definitely appealing! In an ideal world I have electric and petrol versions of each of the fleet 😄
@@Involvod It would be a great series of vids showing the process of conversion to electric. The specifics of doing this to the 2/7/940 Volvos might encourage other owners to do the same. The cost will come down as batteries improve and conversions are made for all models of car. The range will likely be reduced but this is offset by reduced running costs and increased reliability.
You're going to need a bigger garage if you get one of each in electric and ICE.
Lastly, Can you tell me/viewers when the Q+A will be? Living in Australia (opposite side of the world) I would have to be organised to participate in real time.
There have been many EV conversion over the years but the Volvo conversions are particularly appealing as yo end up with a well designed body, suspension, style combined with quiet reliable propulsion. And there are still many ICE Volvos from the '80s and '90s getting around.

Nicely done. I have a 3ft scaffold pole to go on my breaker bar for things like that! I also have some very old Britool 3/4" drive stuff that helps as well. Not sure if it's my imagination but sometimes I find pushing from the other side is easier as I would use my legs to push from garage wall - I probably should go to the gym :-)

Good job done...My 04 XC 70 just had what I thought was the breather system re done earlier this year by my cash mechanic...non volvo guy...AND...oil dripping more than before the job was done....The old story, what you repair may upset another area....Money, I'm not a mechanic....you get the picture....If not for loving my Volvo....say no more. Into the shop it goes.Volvo this time....Not blaming my other guy, but be interesting to see what has happened...
Hope it turns out to be a quick fix, I'm sure the blocked PCV system on this car caused the crank seal to blow

Please do not use impact tools manually, even though they seem heavy duty (or manual tools with an impact wrench). They tend to break during the bendy actions where you slowly put pressure on them like in your video and then you hurt your elbows. ;)

Have you ever used Kroil penetrating oil? If I knew I could get you a can from America without issues, I'd send you some! It's expensive but it's absolutely amazing.

i feel i have a main seal leak i just changed out the water pump due to a leak and then the starter died and i cant even take the bolts off cause nothing i do can break them loose
The starter motor bolts? It's a surprisingly tricky job!

Could you explain the metallic knocking sound on start-up? My 940 has the exact same sound and I've read that these engines are prone to piston slap and that they can handle it relatively well but it's still a very concerning sound to hear. I'm not sure if it's piston slap or not
Yes this one does have piston slap, so does my 240 and I had a couple of 940s on the channel that had it too, surprisingly it can sound different between cars which makes it confusing. But I'm reliably informed they can slap for ever and it's no problem 😃
