- I recently stumbled upon a knock off movie titled Alien Predator which I simply must share with you all. Which is worse: the writing or the VFX?

"Less than whelmed" is how I'm going to describe myself whenever someone asks from now on.
When you are happy about things you can say "I am still gruntled"
@@kensmith5694 Gruntled never meant happy though. Disgruntled and gruntled both mean somewhat angry. It's like flammable and inflammable.
No matter how you feel? What a poor critic.
"I know you can be overwhelmed and you can be underwhelmed but can you ever just be whelmed?"
"I think you can in France"
Name the movie I'm probably butchering a quote from
Whelm is definitely it's own word.
Me: This looks like a movie from The Asylum.
ET: The opening credits list this film as by a company called The Asylum.
Me: Called it.

OMG. I love the Alien films. I love the Predator films. I even love that terrible Alien vs Predator film. This will undoubtedly be a treat.
I'm sorry for your disappointment lol
But Yes I agree I love the lore and story potential for the predators and aliens
I hated the first avp flick, I loved the l unrated extended edition of the second avp flick.
Same here, except that there were only two Alien films and one Predator film (I will never change my mind on that).
@@DavidSmith-vr1nbnor should you. Those are straight up facts.
I have seen it. I don’t regret it vastly. Is it good? *WHAT DO YOU THINK*
We need more "Emma watches bad movies so you don't have too" movie revues!!!
Yeeeeeeees, please! I would subscribe to another Patreon channel just for this.
"revues"? It's reviews 🤦🏼♀️
@@chloewright1 , damn autocorrect!
@@chloewright1 "revue" is a word... You could possibly even classify Emma's videos, including the ones in which she reviews films, as a TYPE of revue, since they contain humor, jokes, topical themes, and occasional musical selections or dancing.

It's amazing what 30 years of technological film making advances can achieve.
Amazon Prime is actually one of my guilty pleasures. Because, the barrier to publishing is so low, pretty much anyone can put a movie on Prime and as long as it doesn't drop below 1.5 stars (I think) you can watch a whole catalog of amateur, shoestring budget movies that aren't usually great--but entertaining for the wrong reasons.
Huh, that's legitimately awesome tho.
That's actually pretty great.
It is a way to give up and coming talent exposure.
A bit like open mike night at the comedy club.
Most of it is crap, but every once in a while...
Soooooo many campy so-bad-it’s-good horror movies. It’s delightful
Tubi has some great stuff.
I'm always envious of people that haven't heard of The Asylum. That they were living in a brighter, slightly better world than I've been in.
Me having never heard of The Asylum until watching this video: pessimism in humanity has grown 20%
I loved a Welsh Merlin film they put out. Shot in Wales with Welsh people, though not in Welsh. The magic effects may have been done by crayon on the film itself but the actors were obviously having fun. A lot of the actors had other jobs, I remember Vortigern had loads of credits including horse wrangler.
Me, happy that i a few days i'll forget all about this film production and distribution company that i've just found out about... Failing memory can be a boon sometimes. 😏
Taking both either a person who regularly gets seizures or someone with severe anxiety/ptsd on an unauthorized mission to save one guy in an area that's so dangerous an entire team was just obliterated is truly reckless leadership...
And the outcome of the mission proved you are right.
@@dwaneanderson8039 ... but who could've foreseen such an outcome?!? /s
Like emma said, they shouldnt even be deployed, if in the military at all.
They should make a movie about a Predator, but they're a kid, they could call it "Child Predator".... That's got a good ring to it...
Genius, underrated comment.
15:00 Reminder to prominently use my old Game Gear as a prop in a sci fi horror movie.
I've already got multiple fog machines, and I live near a huge wooded metro park. I'm golden. 😅
Emma only now discovering the asylum is like when a new stoner takes their first hit in front of tommy chong. You have SO MUCH to learn.
Something I am loving about this is how they are all wear camo paint; not a single one of them is wearing it right, and no one in this movie is being stealthy since they are walking in the open, under clear skies at like high noon down a clearly marked trail...
Also that government building seems to look like my nan's Suburban Lutheran Church built in the 1960's from the outside and like a Wild Zone Laser Tag on the inside!
You can't be too angry with Glenn Campbell. Country music was his day job. Video effects may just be his hobby.
Plus, he had been dead when they made this movie. That probably made it tougher for him to do a good job.
@@mjjoe76 Lol!!
OMG ! LOL!
Well apparently he beat on his wife, so we can be a bit angry.
I really like that the only piece of trivia Amazon offers is "This film is a rip off cash grab...."
It's Corkboard Time, baby!🍿
As a 55 year old person trying to learn enough to make my TH-cam videos better, I enjoyably learn so much from you! Thank you, Emma!😊
A bit of advice: Make a video that is about something you care about. Work on your skills as needed to tell your story. You will find you learn better when you are applying what you are learning.
@@kensmith5694excellent advice Ken!
I have a theory that Asylum is basically a training ground for new movie crews. They stay in business by getting a kickback from the crew members that go on to a successful career. Also from Sharknado and confused grandmothers who buy these movies for the kids.
Yeah, crappy movies are often for that purpose. Paycheck and training.
I heard a profile (on NPR, maybe?) of the Asylum a decade or more ago, and their boast was that they'd made money on every movie they'd ever produced. Their big secret was simply that they sold the movie first - distribution deals, TV rights, and the like - typically with nothing more than a title. Once they had the cash in hand, they'd budget the film well under that amount. Only then would they worry about details like a script.
@@shoikler it's so weird that they're able to do that though. most movies need at least a treatment to get funded, and more often than not a full screenplay and attached director, sometimes even a lead actor or two already signed on
My dad actually once bought a VHS movie called "Gordy," which is a knock-off of "Babe" (the one about a pig) -- He of course thought he was getting "Babe," and I didn't quite know how to politely disillusion him.
Reminds of those bygone days when, in the period between a Disney movie being released in the theaters and it coming out on video, you'd go into your local Blockbuster Video, and see a cheap knock-off video one of these little companies would produce, obviously to try to hoodwink folks who were (or their kids were) just a LITTLE too impatient for the actual Disney film to make it to home video.
I’m really sorry some asshole decided to help themselves to your bank account. Thank you for this hilarious review.
Chances are she will get some back.
Stores are technically meant to confirm your identity when you buy something with card.
I swear this is my new FAVORITE way to watch crappy movies! 😂😂🤣🤣 literally, laughing my ARSE off!! Thank you, Emma👍
i'm glad that christopher judge is actually alive and well, starring in bangers like "lord of the elves"
OMG..... well, a pay check is a pay check!
@@rowanrobbins Lol, I'd said, "Oh, no...Teal'c, what did you do?" and my husband - "he got a paycheck".
Money is money.
Michael Caine starred in a Seven Segal movie.
It paid for his country home.
He's also starred in two of the biggest games over the last 5 years, God of War and God of War Ragnarok, winning awards for both performances.
Don't worry, Judge hasn't fallen off.
I absolutely lost it at 'They started in Honduras, and now... they're in York 🤷♀'
The best bit was your surprise reveal of that alien/predator on your board... seeing it go from armored in shadow to not armored in shadow was amazing.
I love that you’re wearing a ditto shirt in a video about a knockoff 😂
The CIA uses this movie in place of water-boarding...
That is a horrifying idea!
The MST3K reboot actually riffed Atlantic Rim, which is also hilariously awful. Worth a look if you feel like a giggle. 🤭
Rifftrax have covered a fair few Asylum films as well. Birdemic is a bit of a jewel.
Fuck, pacific rim was unhilariously awful.
@@waitsjunkieI love Birdemic! It’s definitely on my “so bad it’s kind of good” list. The cgi birds, the acting, the… well… everything. It’s pretty cringe…😇
@@arndnajI’ve never seen it, but my husband agrees with you. Not del Torro’s finest ninety minutes, he says.
@@DuchessRedIt was that spin kick to a bird that won me over with that movie, that and the upside down bird 😂
That movie was just so terrible it was actually kind of amazing.
The best I can say about Amazon prime movies is you can spent all evening looking fore a good movie to watch and by the time you give up it's bedtime.
I ain't gon be able to watch this all but the moment you said asylum I knew about what to expect asylum is insane
I thought Asylum was bad but they have better stories than that Pooh bear horror movie
Frankly, I'm surprised that the Asylum hasn't covered Arkham yet.
Back AGAIN?! You're spoiling us!
A friend (?) once gave me the Asylum studio movie "Battle of Los Angeles" as a gift, since he bought it thinking it was "Battle Los Angeles". I had to stop watching after 10 minutes. Maybe you could review it, Emma?
Was that the one with Rutger Hauer and Danny Glover?
The idea of a Pacific Rim knockoff called Atlantic Rim amuses me more than it probably should.
36:20 in the games, Compound Eyes is actually an ability (which Butterfree has!) although it raises accuracy instead of attack damage like it does for this card
"You see, Copyright... You're not dealing with the average predator anymore!"
-the Alien Predator I think
The Alvarez “yup dead” part was so dark and janky I thought the “bang” sound effect was hitting her head on the web thing on the ceiling, then the clip of her stomping the alien was so fast and dark I had to watch it 3 times.
I may be on my own but I have a real soft spot for The Asylum. I love the Sharknado films and I've watched a lot of their knockoffs. They are hilarious. The Sherlock Holmes one with its robot dinosaurs is a a particular favourite.
Ah then have you heard of Troma and Full moon pictures. Or anything Charles Band touched :)
Honestly I can't recommend any of these movies except doll man and puppet master
Forgot to mention that it was Asylum's proud boast (I don't know if it still is) that their movies were made on such a low budget that none of them, however terrible, had ever lost money.
@@sherlockwho5714 Troma and Full Moon are just as terrible but not quite so blatantly er... "inspired by" the current box office success of the day.
@@bobhale7302 yeah they are just as bad but Charles Band made some good money. I should also credit him for helping some people start their careers.
Princess of Mars with Traci Lords was excellent. As was whatever that Merlin film shot in Wales with Welsh actors was called.
When I was at uni doing SFX and model/prop making everybody would talk in depth of their love for the big hitters out there like Aliens, The Thing, Blade Runner etc.
But mention a film by 'The Asylum' and suddenly it would be time to arrange a watch party and hours of discussion! The absolute kings of the mockbuster that manage to combine the enjoyable and the unwatchable into something magical!
15:47 "... blokey ..." I think you mean that as in like a bloke, or a dude, or whatever. But I think you just gave the studio their next villain for the Avengers knock off, Revengers. It'll be a team of quirky superheros coming together to fight Bloki.
Bloki - Loki's unremarkable working class brother
2:05 i just wanted to say if you're still looking for a solution to your lighting issue, I'm a photographer and i'd recommend trying a light box or using a light diffuser to lower or eliminate reflections :)
Yes, and also:
A very spread out light from one side (45 degrees to the camera) that is just a bit brighter than the one one the other side and no light straight from the camera area.
To make it look good also add a light from directly above the subject coming down on the hair.
Don't have any light coming upwards unless you are making a horror film.
This keeps the reflected light from the face of a picture from going to a camera but also provides enough shadow effect on the face so that we get the depth perception thing working.
I the hard military-man saying you heard was "don't *soil* your diaper", which is at least a thing lol
Yes but a saying that makes absolutely no sense can also work if you want to go for more like a G rate film. Nearly and "don't xxxxx" works if the reaction of other actors sells it.
@@kensmith5694 ok
Emma, I'm so sorry that someone stole your money! I hope that the bank at least is recognizing that it was obvious theft and removing the charges. After all of your hard work doing consumer protection videos, you at least deserve a good, solid scam instead of regular old theft. How basic.
Gah! So sorry some of your money got stolen, Emma! That happened to me last year with my finances, albeit not as much but it's always alarming because they could also steal your identity on a larger scale. I hope you can get recompensated or hope at least it doesn't happen again. Anyway, being a former infantryman in the U.S. Army, I can say that the protocols and details of how soldiers are portrayed in even big budget movies, is often inaccurate so it was definitely...far from good in this discount Predator lol. I mean they are supposed to be part of the Navy and I assume, Navy SEALS, but the uniforms are definitely not right and little/no accurate protocols again. Even the main Predator movie did not get certain things right like the types of weapons they would be issued and how they held them but of course we loved it for other reasons.
This review is 100x better and more enjoyable than the movie.
The best Alien movies:
- Alien
- Aliens
- Alien 3
The best Predator movies:
- Predator
- Predator 2
- Prey
The rest is a waste of time
I really should watch these movies i've only ever seen the first ones of both
I loved prey it was a pleasant surprise since I didn't know it was a predator movie
Sad that you neglected to add Alien resurrection. It had the same fun-action style that Aliens(2nd film) had.
The story wasn't amazing but at its core we got space mercenaries and ripley vs aliens... which is Essentially also the same.
Aliens(2nd film) was my favorite of the franchise so maybe that's why I'm so lenient with actiony
nonsensical versions of alien.
Maybe give it another try.
@@aToxicJester I think if you enjoyed it then that is what matters.
I thought it was decent myself
@@RobTJHayward definitely watch them and definitely watch prey
I suspect it wasn't even called Alien Predator™ until someone sarcastically pitched it at the wrap party. It was originally something like "The Smoke Machine Chronicles: Phase One".
Didn't unsubscribe... But only because you asked so nicely. 10/10.
25:28 Is that an MiB reference? When they reach the farm in the first one, Tommy Lee Jones does a sciency-thing with a widget and says "I don't suppose you know which alien leaves a green spectral trail and craves sugar water, do you?"
The Asylum steals from movies with both fists, like me in a penny-candy store when I was 7.
Once again, you have saved us (your viewers) from otherwise wasting a couple hours of life.
I would totally watch you stream Predator!
It is a masterclass in organic diversity, which I remind the dudebros frequently to their annoyance.
The movie literally opens with a slur. But yay there’s black people!
@@yehooyahoo6861Yes, because movies with slurs can never be diverse or progressive.
Django? Who's that?

Quentin is quiet literally a racist assaulter of women with a foot fetish. You did not make the point you thought babes
To be fair, the guy being injured is probably the most realistic aspect of the movie. Injuries occur. I think you will be amazed at the percentage of casualties in wars that have nothing to do with the enemy - injuries, disease, parasites, accidents etc.
Yeah, that's what I though, too. On the other hand, however, it's one of the myriad of violations of the "Chekhov's Gun" principle that this movie commits and I suspect that triggered Emma (as it likely would many movie critics). The principle says that in a narrative plot (such as a movie) every element you put in should have a reason for being included, otherwise don't put it in (as otherwise it would only be distracting).
@@uNiels_Heart What about Hitchcock's cameos?
@@user-gl5dq2dg1j good question, I don't really know. What I can quickly find by googling is this:
'No matter what, the scene in The Lodger called for a telephone operator to fill the space. "It was strictly utilitarian," Hitchcock said in his interview with Truffaut. "We had to fill the screen. Later on it [his cameos] became a superstition and eventually a gag," he remarked.'
and:
'As part of an extensive series of interviews in Francois Truffaut's book Hitchcock, the director stated that he is conscious of placing his cameos within the first five minutes of the film to avoid extraneous audience distractions as the narrative thickens.'
Wow, whoa, woo! That alien face reveal with the pictures was really impressive! Good job!
I agree. I'm just happy I was sitting down at that point.
"Emma Reviews Terrible Movies" is my absolute favorite sub-genre of TH-cam.
My dad and I used to watch asylum movies when I was a kid and basically spent the whole time laughing at the special effects and guessing who would die next.
38:25 oh wow woooooo 🤩
(This was so much fun, thanks Emma)
I love that you are just now discovering The Asylum. 😂
Watching Emma get incandescently angry over the intentionally shitty VFX of an Asylum movie is what I needed to start my Sunday.
best movie review ever:
"Watching this film gives you the same feeling as if you are being defrauded for two thousand dollars with identity theft..."
My favourite bit was Emma taking off the armoured alien photo to show the aliens body pic below. High art.
Emma this is random and kinda unrelated but I started watching you some time in 2022, and I honestly just have a better day when I get to watch your content no matter what you're talking about, I would watch for hours while playing Slime Rancher 2 after it released so you always remind me of that game :> now I'm watching while I play Stardew Valley !
It's genuiney impressive for me to see that you've put so much more work and energy into deconstructing this off-brand off-brand mockbuster wannabee than I have put into anything in my life. ( or anyone else involved with this project apparently. )
Movies like this remind me of the discount store brand food that's sat right next to the name brand ones, enticing you to buy it because it has a slightly lower price, when secretly its actually made by the same people who make the name brand, so they get paid either way.
'Kinda gives me a Vorcha effect from Mass Effect'
I AM LITERALLY PLAYING MASS EFFECT RN. WAT.
The "risky unsanctioned mission to save one guy" thing has actually happened. In 2005, a team of SAS rescued two of their own from a jail in Basra, Iraq, in direct defiance of their own orders. The rescue involved knocking down police station walls with armored vehicles lol.
There are maybe two teams that could take on seals. One is the SAS, the other is possibly Moussad.
So sorry to hear that bank detail robbery, I hope you get your 2000£ back! When you read it though, I reflexively assumed it to be a sponsor segment, because of the change in tone and the generic scenario and began skipping it only to realise it was too short to be that and there was no sponsor listed in the description lol
Edit: OMFG BIDOOOF!! ❤
They should have called it Silly Lil Predator
That was the coolest reveal with the alien and the picture, it just blew my mind.🤯 Pure genius Emma, loved it! 😉
I feel like Asylum probably uses a lot of friends and family in their productions. That may account for the somewhat lacking IMDB info and people who only pop up in one or two scenes. 😆
It's funny how the "alien predator" vision can be blocke by a simple plastic pallet The Asylum didn't even tried to mask as something else.
I often think movies like this are made to (up)grade other movies. I used to know a used car salesmen who priced a terrible looking car in the lot well above its worth, just to make buyers feel good good with the average others.
Im so glad Prey was good. The Predator was insultingly bad. Never heard of this knockoff tho.
Prey was awesome. I am considering watching it again now.
Thanks for the reminder!
On the one hand, I understand the frustration of a viewer who might have bought or rented this movie by mistake and felt cheated by the experience.
On the other hand, during the days of VCRs, $1 VHS rentals, and Blockbuster Video, my best friend and I would spend weekends binge-watching the "worst" B-movies, generally among the Horror and Sci-Fi genres, and it was entertaining as hell in a "so bad that it's good" kind of way. Often, it's all in one's expectation. Regardless, it doesn't make for "better" movies.
Hercules in New York. Whoever had rented that VHS before me had put a sticker on the case, on which they'd written "Don't. Just don't." But I did.
🤣 I could only hear Adrian say “Transport Snake” once you said it. Only after pausing your video to read “transmission” and then rewinding could I hear him say that word 🤣 9:04
Mind out for tech balls. Always solid advice applicable to many, if not every, situation.
Am sorry you got robbed! I have had this happen to me but the banks here in the US normally give the money back once they know you aren't a crook. I have heard from some friends that the UK banks are never so eager to do that for their customers. I hope you get your money back, 2,000 pounds is not small change. Great video by the way.
Hey Emma, my brother is a film editor and he's done a lot of low budget. He edited a film a while ago called Aliens vs Avatars. It has nothing to do with the two movies of the same names. I suspect it will make this movie look like a high budget production.
So, thanks a lot for taking the time to keep us informed and making us laugh despite going through a few days that would be stressful for anyone. Cheers! 🦆
38:00 WOW! The alien reveal! !! I'm impressed 😲
Somehow still better that the actual "The Predator (2018)"
You NEED to see Cold Moon. They had the budget for Christopher Lloyd, but the VFX make this movie look high quality. One of the first signs is a scene where it’s supposed to be raining, and you can tell there’s just someone off screen with their thumb over a garden hose. And it goes downhill from there.
Just love the pure sarcasm Emma , when I see a new video I must click on it …
But this was just one of ur best movie reviews yet …
Also loving the top it’s so cool
Emma is right on time. The same thing happened to me.Someone walked into my credit union in another town with my bank account credentials and withdrew over 6000 dollars.
Throw in a predator movie knock off and I am having a personal synchronicity.God bless you girl.
That alien reveal on the board scene was awesome! Never saw it coming
22:52 Not to mention that the aircraft doesn't look like anything humans have ever made or anything that flies the way we've made machines fly.
My favorite part was the Alien Predator reveal. Not the one in the movie, but the part where she totally flipped the armored version to the not armored version at exactly the correct time to really capitalize on the heightened tension of the whatever was going on in the film.
Well played.
Woah! That reveal when you pulled the alien armor picture aside to reveal the pic of the alien was sick! ;)
There's actually another film from 1986 called Alien Predator (and other names) that's a knockoff of Alien. The acting is pretty terrible but there are some genuinely creepy moments.
It's like they took the plot of Predator and said, "what if the marines from Aliens were here." I can't remember what the one female character's name in this movie was because I kept calling her Vasquez in my head.
So happy that you release this video right the day I decided to spend a week or two with bad B movies again. Asylum is one of the best studios for that kind of movies, I will totally watch that movie
Love listening to you rant about film production
Yeah asylum is so infamous for their terrible knock offs that the entire knock off genre has the nickname asylum films
That last scene where you're confused about it being static is because it's a composite of a shot of brooks and a model of some sort. You can see that the shadows don't even line up, and his is darker, despite being further from the light source than the trees. It's for more of a travesty than at first glance.
Emma's energy and mannerisms remind me of watching James Veitch speak on email scams. Fucking awesome!
Holy shit, what crazy good reveal at 38:00, I appreciate the doubling down on the bit. This is truly A+ comedy! Because you could've redone the bit and we never would've known, but I feel like the little goof is so much better
Thanks. I needed a chuckle. Every time you said "alien predator" I laughed more and more. 😂
The pure anger at the VFX supervisor 😂
That was such an amazing reveal Emma! I was so surprised
Thanks Emma, woke up to this so going to make my Sunday and watch this 😁😁😁
