Besides the unreal and incredible performance of John Bonham, it still amazes me today that people were appreciating so much a drum solo of this length, nothing I could ever see happening today anymore (I saw Led Zeppelin live in Munich in 1973)
Yes all these beats and use of different percussion instruments embedded in his soul and brain. Just genius! Too bad he dealt with the demons of alcohol and left way too early. I remember when "In through the out door" released. People said it was Zeppelins worst album. I loved it. The Percussion was incredible! By the time I was old enough to credit Bonham's genius, he was gone.
Even though I am a prog drummer, over the years (decades) I have come to the conclusion that this IS the best drum solo of all times. Nobody, and I mean, nobody has ever mastered triplets on this level. RIP
What made John The Greatest Rock Drummer ever? Great time and respect for space was one thing. And for another, he had a tremendous understanding of integrating the entire kit into his playing. Some drummers were more top kit hand oriented players only; but John had developed his foot to mimic rhythms he played with his hands as well. That 'Bottom' was very important to the Zeppelin sound. And his jack rabbit speed could accomplish some intricate doubles and triplets that filled space to make him sound bombastic! I caught him live in June, 1977 at MSG in NY and feel very honored that I did.
It is CRAZY!!!! The best drummer's solo of all times and all places! I keep asking myself the same question every time I hear & see Moby Dick - How can he do it?

Bonzo is my favorite ROCK drummer. Listen to the fantastic tone of all of his drums. His bass drum foot with just a single pedal was astounding. His inventiveness, and sense of swing while playing in a rock setting was quite unique at the time and gave his solos a fantastic fluid feel. His sixteenth note triplets played around the drums are SUPERSONIC!!! Never to be forgotten.
Out of all of the bands that I saw in concert at the end of the 60s and early 70s, John Bonham was the hardest hitting, but the best sound of any drums I’ve ever heard he was an icon
@@mattiemclean9882 1970. Live bands were always overindulgent with solos. Three minute album songs became ten minutes. And Bonham was not overrated. Ask any legendary rock drummer.
FOR A DRUMMER TO DO A DRUM SOLO FOR 14 minutes AND NOT miss A BEAT with THE high HATS is TRULY amazing AND THAT'S WHY JOHN Bonzo BONHAM Was The GREATEST DRUMMER in THE WORLD REST in PEACE JOHN BONHAM YOU WERE A GREAT DRUMMER 🥁
During Bonham's masterful solo, you can hear a pin drop. THESE were great audiences, back in the day of truly appreciating music and musicians, and especially geniuses like JB.
Different era, when this music started blowing up…nowadays everyone’s like “meh I heard it all”….while the radios are filled with sad songs, and labels are pushing mostly no talents required.
Nearly all concertgoers today care only about capturing it on video the entire time they're there and being one of the 1,000-10,000 to upload it onto YT, IG, or TikTok. That is THE #1 reason why I gave up going.
I don’t play drums and I’ve never tried and I have no idea how they do it so a lot of the complexity is lost on me but I know that it sounds dope and makes me really happy. I was huge into Led Zeppelin in HS and now 15 years later revisited this video and it made me smile ear to ear.
Never in my life have I ever heard better, fantastic ! I'm not a Drummer fan for say, but it don't take an expert to recognize talent of this magnitude. This man is the greatest !
@@baldvale5418 my comment was based on your comment saying that only happens once I got the impression that it's never happened before that's why I mentioned those other bands
oldest videos on youtube are 18 years old. this is 53 years old. the camera quality makes this a literal time machine to the greatest band of all time in their prime.
I understand fully, I was a little kid at the time, and still have trouble getting my head around the timeless film and sound quality 53 years later! Its like they were never supposed to age. Yet in the 1980s I recall making fun of middle aged folks and their ‘ancient’ music tastes from the 1950s, just 30 years before 😂 A key factor could be the electronics technology, it makes a big difference to how we perceive time, trends and fashions across the eras and generations.
@@Pulsonar There were some good cutting edge music in the 50's, but for whatever reason, including the music in the then recent past, by the mid 60's there was an outburst of creative music of the day that still hits it today. This is just pure raw rock and besides it just being a truly great solo, so much of the music back then was a important part of the cultural revolution, and like much of history to know its intensity is to have lived with it.
@@shopshop144 I agree, the 50s was when the music revolution really took off, the music was really great and a foundation and inspiration for what followed during the social and political upheavals in the 60s I realise that now. I was just an ignorant know nothing teenager back in the 80s just auto programmed to hate anything that my ‘old fashioned’ parents liked. Its normal to behave stupidly and wayward at that age whilst squeezing pimples on my face I guess 😂
No Bonham, no further. The respect those 4 had for each other, and the realisation that if one departed they couldn’t go on, goes to show why 1980 was the end. The word irreplaceable is an understatement! RIP Bonzo ❤
@Tommaso Raite: you are so right in the fact that best music 🎼🎶 ever from the 60 and 70's.!! Can't beat 🪘🪘 IT AND John Bonham Was a huge part of it!! IT was a great time growing up and of course, the music 🎶 Was the best part of all!!!
I saw him do this live, it was amazing ! They were billed as the 'New Yardbirds' & only, maybe, 300 people there. I was 16 & was right next to a 2 1/2 ft. tall stage & I stood there with my mouth open...literally !!!
Just unbelievable. There is a TH-cam video that Bonham is trying out with another never msde it band. The singer and guitarist were talking saying how out of time and crappy Bonhan wss. All kinds of negative nasty talk. I LAUGHED BECAUSE THOSE JOKERS WENT NO WHERE AND I OFTEN WONDER HOW EMBARRASSED THEY WERE AFTER BONHAM BECAME THE BEST. HIS OWN MAN!!! I LOVE IT❤️
@@promark5317 They were well into cocaine by 1969-1970. That's stage tech Benji LeFerve standing behind him throughout the entire solo, likely waiting to feed band members a "bump" when necessary. A blast of cocaine doesn't last anywhere near as long as a Led Zeppelin show. Bonzo and Page didn't get sloppy until heroin was well into the picture.
@@broeheemed32I agree with you! Until 1975 they were absolutely top of their league. In the last tours you could see Bonzo and Jimmy struggling real bad!

Outrageously brilliant still after the countless times I've listened to Led Zep since I was 13 years old in the early '70's. I didn't get to see them live till Knebworth in '79! They were and still are the Greatest band of all time!
Holy crap!!!! The absolute & forever king of rock drumming John Bonham. We're watching an unparallelled and never to be duplicated combination of natural gifts, skill & groove. He was THE perfect and only fit for rock's greatest band, & that's why millions of Zep fans knew it was all over the second they heard about Bonzo's death. It was crushing news that still hurts.
I think Jason would do a reunion and I think so would JP and JPJ. But Robert Plant has stated he doesn't want to do this kind of music anymore. I can't blame him, it just wouldn't be the same.
This Albert Hall concert should be released in Blu-Ray. Can't get enough of it. Totally love it. This one and the tour record "How the west was won" are the the best legacy of the band. Every single one of them shine of their own.
I never knew until now after 50 years of listening to this song on a yearly basis, that he was playing that part of the drum solo with his hands. Now it makes sense. Now I know. This has to be the best video of John Bonham playing drums ever. Absolutely fucking awesome.
Having seen both Zep and Cream, i think Baker ranks equal with Bonham, although they are different of course. Ginger Baker always had a drum solo that was as well appreciated by their audience, as this is by Bonham here.
Seattle, WA July '77. Bonzo played this solo for like 20 + minutes. Band played for 4 HOURS! UNBELIEVEABLE! Tickets were $10. 100 level Kingdome. Best day EVER! And as I said before . . . Robert Plant will FOREVER make the juice run down this girls legs ~❤
Same concert. Same sentiment. Robert Plant always blew my skirt up and always will. Just saw him live 8/9/24 at the Kettlehouse Amphitheatre in Bonner MT with Allison Krause and he sounded awesome and looked great. Who knows when he will stop touring and stay home to watch the grass grow. ❤
I WAS ALSO THEIR CENTER STAGE ABOUT 20 FT FROM THE STAGE 13:06 THERE WAS SO MUCH HASHISH BEING SMOKED AT THAT CONCERT THAT IT LOOKED LIKE THE BUILDING WAS ON FIRE WHEN THEY LET PEOPLE OUT.
+Brett Huber Saw them in '77 at the old Capital center in Maryland...I saw a lot of big name rock bands when I was a puppy...but Zeppelin live was a total different animal.
I did see them three times two nights at Earls Court 1975, tickets £1.50 for a good seat, £1 for a not so good seat Many bands did drum solos at the time Bonham was something else, I remember his high hat with small ching ring doing perfect eights to the bar. He was a very big part of the band but got few actual writing credits. Page was greedy.
Imagine you’ were Jimmy Page, auditioning for vocalist for your new band. You came across Robert Plant who happened to know a drummer called John Bonham. That was some lottery level coincidence
Ya absolutely. Lightning in a bottle!!!!! No other way to describe it. The stars were literally aligned when the blokes met! I’m sure if we were able to go back in time and pin point the day they made the band official I’m sure there was some sort of astrological once in a lifetime event that same night!!!
what for others was an exceptional thing bordering on the human...for him it was a normal thing... devastating in sound and soul... disarming for the ears and for the heart... Bonham will be missed forever
On 14:06, see for yourself why can’t any drummer beat Bonzo?!! His crossovers here are incredibly fast, u can’t even see his drumsticks at all. So yes, he still stands No.1 of the G.O.A.T drummer in the entire world.
You are watching him do what is called the lightning fast left-hand lead triplets from hi-tom to low tom and the bass drum (left, right, kick). Many you guys think he’s doing the insane speed of crossover triplets on 14:06 with the right hand, however many drumming specialists say it’s a left hand lead lick so if you slow down the video, u can see he’s doing it with the less dominant hand. But literally that’s unbelievably class for Bonzo, yep I agree no doubt that any other professional drummer could match that talent of this Zeppelin drummer. He’s definitely my No.1 drummer on top of my G.O.A.T drummer list.
@@thecorknicehero3073 thanks for the comment of a drum specialist view. I want to talk about why almost all real talented drummers are dying young. Many so called super drummers are still alive, so my question is, are they really so good? In an educational point of view Bonham,Moon, Yoyoka, Paulina, Sina, or other still alive drummers probably are the most difficult child’s or were child’s to handle. They live in another dimension and their heart working overtime. Four limbs coordination we poor and normal folks call it multitasking. As in every proffesion practicing is the key, and the best guitarists drummers, piano players, singers, even football players talents showing in their younger age. Everybody can learn and become an Engineer or Arhitect, but becoming a Messi or in this case Bonham needs extraordinary talent, which most the time overlooked by the parents from different reasons. And my take of all todays talented young and coming up artists have a huge help from the internet, so no wonder that so many brilliant kids can learn without paying huge sums for education, but sorry, Bonhams or Einsteins are not born in every century which is the reason that after a half century,no one even tries to touch Mobi Dick! Four geniuses as it happened in the case of LZ or the Beatles only happens if they have a difficult childhood or poor environment to growing up which can be the driving force to have a better life. Best example, a Bedouin kid in the Saharan desert in fact did find an empty oilcan and fabricated a guitar from it and become the greatest left handed guitarist in our time. His name is Mdou Moctar, and if you friend want to your jaw dropping to the floor, look him up on TH-cam. Thanks for your exceptional comment about drumming!
Brings back a ton of memories! Led zeppelin was my first concert. It was in Baltimore civic center in 1973. I was in a chair, 6 rows from the stage!! Totally blew me away. R.I.P. Bonzo!!!!
Jealous man. I saw so many of the greats in the 70's, Sabbath w Ozzy, Ozzy w Rhoads, Clapton, Beck, Floyd w Roger, Aerosmith, Styx, Rush, Queen, Genesis w Gabriel & Phil, Grateful Dead 220 times (literally) Neil Young, CSN, CSNY, Cheap Trip, ELO, APP, Littefeat, I could on and on. But never saw Zeppelin or Skynyrd. The planets just weren't in alignment at the time. Definitely a feather in your cap!
I’m only 25 but born and raised right outside of Baltimore City. We’re currently working on a 150 million dollar remodel of the civic center! You’re beyond lucky you got to see Zeppelin live!!!
Saw him live in 1975 in Pittsburgh, I was 18,a drummer myself he is the best, people don't realize how fast his right foot was,he only had one pedal no double bass. He did Moby pick I was amazed, especially when he played with his hands,AMAZING!!!!!!! 15:28
The sheer raw and crazed frenetic energy with which Bonzo approached the drums is absolutely astounding. It was less boxing-match and more street-brawl, if you follow my meaning. It’s not just that he played the instrument differently than anyone else-it’s more like he wasn’t playing an instrument at all. John Bonham was a “drummer” in the same sense as someone applying paint to a canvas by dropping a hand grenade in a box of spray cans is a “painter.” It just doesn’t describe what he did. It was his medium, but what he did with it was-and is, to this day-truly, genuinely, profoundly unique.

The amount of respect, and silence the audience had for Mr. Bonham. When people appreciated the artist, and their art. Amazing. There will never be another that comes close to Led Zeppelin .
I'm embarrassed to say, that after seeing this peripherally for over 40 years, this is the first time I've actually payed attention and watched it all the way through. I had no idea he put down the sticks and played with his hands for part of it. Amazing
It’s no replacement, whatsoever, but, seeing Jason Bonham live and knowing he truly does live up to being his father’s protege is priceless. Closest a young Zeppelin fan will ever get to the real thing💜
Jason isn’t half as good as his father-“ when you try to play like someone else you will always come in second” Truth be told Jason wasn’t all that interested in drums he wanted to be a motor cycle off road competitive rider.
He's pretty good, not as good as his dad but that's because he had talent rarely seen and is one of the best drummers of all time, but his show and band are really awesome. The band is is really good at recreating the original live performances especially those done in TSRTS. I also loved looking over seeing a blue collar guy who was clearly in 70s who probably saw the original show just lose it and having the time his life. It was definitely worth seeing as it shows how unique the songs are from one another that nothing feels like its all the same sound.
It’s literally the best band ever. The greatest vocalist, guitarist, dummer, and percussionist/bassist in one band. They were in their 20s when they created this music.
I have a unlimited admiration for Neil Peart. But watching this solo by John Bonham gives me goosebumps. This is why he was chosen as the best drummer of all time by rolling Stone magazine... Amazing! What a gift to be able to create melodies using percussion.
@@paulrobinson5833 - It's also drum enthusiasts hearing and valuing different things. Of the early 70's greats I would rank them, Carl Palmer, Ian Paice, and then Bonham, but I tend to favor equally involving the entire kit. Palmer and Peart are more truly symphonic in that way, and the latter was far more creative with a wider expanse of sounds and rhythms from around the world and across time. That's why Peart sounds superior to me, but I most value that "drum symphony" approach and skill set.
Today's "musicians" have little to no talent and rely on lyricism, stage performance, and they're swagger. Absolutely zero fucking talent. It's actually REALLY sad when you start to realize that all the truely great musicians that we've lost in their prime and the "talent" pool isn't replenishing it, at all. We'll never see anyone quite like Chris Cornell, Stevie Ray Vaughn, or Dimebag Darrell ever again and it was too damn soon! My God, it's mind blowing to think how much FUCKING GREAT music we never got to hear because they left this world too soon. Imagine SRV, John Bonham, Cliff Burton and Chris Cornell performing together on the same stage. So depressing to know nothing even CLOSE to that will ever happen, again. On a side note, check out Senri Kawaguchi(?). Super petite but impressively powerful Chinese woman drummer. In my top 5 all time for sure and that's tough company.
Absolutely. Also; while living in London in the 1970s for a decade in my 20s; besides LZ , I also saw live in concert - Rolling Stones, The Who, Pink Floyd, The Clash, Black Sabbath, The Cure, Roxy Music, Iron Maiden, Judas Priest and Fleetwood Mac among others. All memories which will never fade.
@@worldtraveller1900 I was born too late indeed. I have the choice between paying with a lung to watch Cardi B shake her butt and selling a kidney to hear Travis Scott growling autotune onto trap beats.
It must be said again. The greatest rock drummer that ever lived just happened to end up in the greatest rock band of all time with three other equally gifted virtuosos. This clip is from the "Led Zeppelin DVD" released on 2003. The best selling music dvd ever and a 5-hour gold mine for the "official video release" starved Zeppelin masses.

Bonzo is my favorite ROCK drummer. Listen to the fantastic tone of all of his drums. His bass drum foot with just a single pedal was astounding. I understand fully, I was a little kid at the time, and still have trouble getting my head around the timeless film and sound quality 53 years later! Its like they were never supposed to age. Yet in the 1980s I recall making fun of middle aged folks and their ‘ancient’ music tastes from the 1950s, just 30 years before 😂
A key factor could be the electronics technology, it makes a big difference to how we perceive time, trends and fashions across the eras and generations.
True that!!
@@Pulsonar There were some good cutting edge music in the 50's, but for whatever reason, including the music in the then recent past, by the mid 60's there was an outburst of creative music of the day that still hits it today. Many you guys think he’s doing the insane speed of crossover triplets on 14:06 with the right hand, however many drumming specialists say it’s a left hand lead lick so if you slow down the video, u can see he’s doing it with the less dominant hand.
Of the early 70's greats I would rank them, Carl Palmer, Ian Paice, and then Bonham, but I tend to favor equally involving the entire kit. That's why Peart sounds superior to me, but I most value that "drum symphony" approach and skill set.
It's interesting that when Led Zeppelin first came out, Rolling Stone gave them a bad review
@@jimcharles651 considering how woke Rolling Stone is these days, not too surprising they missed the mark back then
Justin Bieber: "God sent me to make 'music'"
John Bonham: "Hm, I don't remember sending anyone. . ."
Woooow
I'm laughing my butt off reading this🤣
THIS! Fuck yes! Mic drop my friend!

Imagine being in the audience and having no idea that you are witnessing THE most legendary drum performance of all times... or maybe they did.
I was there in 1970 !
@@worldtraveller1900 Did you realize the magnitude of what you were witnessing?
There’s still good rock bands touring old and new
What a great performance!
Пасибо !
The greatest thieving rock band in history*

I think it’s because he was passionate about drumming from the age of five

I'll just say it: Best drum solo EVER.
