@@TechnoDadI’ve always suspected it’s to prevent the newbies from damaging their speakers. I remember early in the DVD format some users were complaining about how certain passages in discs like the Matrix blew their TV speakers or their new ‘under-powered’ soundbar audio components. Started seeing more discs include a 5.1 mix and a separate stereo mix after that as well since I think some of the on-the-fly player down-mixing caused some channels to overload if the disc wasn’t mastered correctly for down-mixing.
Thank you for this video. My loudness enhancement was already set to OFF on my Pioneer VSX-LX305. It's a good thing that Pioneer makes this the default, out of the box setting :)
Dude, I had no idea this was a thing. I changed it, didn't notice much differnce in the clip I had on, but yeah I don't want it compressing my dynamic range so shut it right off. Thanks guys.
@@TechnoDad I just picked up the Marantz Cinema 70s and was thinking I might need to return it because it seemed underpowered. Made this one change and now the 50w is plenty for my small 10x10 room.
Hey Channa thanks for the heads up. My 😎Marantz SR-5015 had it on default. Turned it off then played the beginning scene of Morbius when the bats come flying out of the cave. WOW!
Thankfully it was already off. Thought this was the new “dynamic volume” at first, but I see that’s still a separate setting. I like that one set to Low for regular TV watching.
Wow, did not even know that was a thing, I was looking for something else altogether. As stated in the video, make sure you are playing Dolby Atmos audio to get this option, I tried without and the option did not appear. Turned off the Loudness Management and it was definitely louder; cheers pal!
Hi - that was awesome! I have four Polk R700's as my front and rear speakers in a 7.2.4 configuration. I have a Denon AVR-X8500HA and I cannot get the settings to allow for me to set the rear speakers to large. It just wont do it. Rear speakers just default to small. I don't know if you do consulting or not, but I would gladly pay for your time to walk me thru how to do this.
Note: This setting affects how the AVR reacts to the "DialNorm" setting in an Atmos soundtrack. With loudness management off, the AVR should ignore the DialNorm setting and play Atmos soundtracks at the same level through all speakers. However, not all AVRs can properly turn loudness management off, even if it looks like it is off, it is not. When loudness management is On (or can't be turned off), height effects will play at a lower level.

I have a question Techno Pops. I have a 4k tv, but an older yamaha av receiver that I love. Its only 1080p so I can't get 4k video if I connect the tv to the receiver. I've read that if I connect it with a toslink optical cable from the tv out to the receiver's optical, that I will be able to get sound through the receiver and also get 4k video. I hooked up an hdmi cable from the tv's ardac or whatever its called, out to the receiver's rdac input and get sound now, but only the two front speakers. I will be buying a new receiver that does 4k and 8k, but I dont know which one yet. In the meantime, I'd like to know if going the optical route will give 5.1 sound.
Hey techno dad, read up on what dialnorm is, and how it’s a part of loudness mgt. it’s not compressing the sound. If the compression setting is off with loudness mgt on there is no compression. There is metadata from the source that controls what I’m talking about.
Cool, I could tell the diference by turned the surround parameter off. What is your view on Dynamic Volume within the Audyssey Volume? Should it set off as well? This feature automatically adjusting between quiet and lound passages, would this feature decompress the sound signals?
Is there a hidden selector for choosing between 4K: Standard or 4K: Enhanced on a Denon X6700H or Marantz SR8015 as is on my Onkyo TX-NR787. Because I’m in the process of returning the Denon because the video appeared soft on my Sony XBR65X950G which wasn’t present with the Onkyo. I noticed on your display of a Denon menu in this video that it appears to be sharper then what I had. 2:57
Its under audio adjust in the dolby section. Mine was already off. I'm not real thrilled with my pioneer in general. Was hoping it was part of the issue.
Would compression not just decrease the difference in volume between the quietest and loudest sounds in the sound track? I did the advised, i didn't really notice a difference, but its not clear what difference i should be hearing. "More sound" and "the most sound" doesn't really explain it. Is there anymore information on this, what the setting actually does and what difference it makes being on or off? I couldn't find a video on Joe n Tell's channel.
Hello Techno Dad..Im using Tonewinner AT2300 AV reciever in my settings there us DRC mode which i should turn on or off or Auto..Its Dynamic Range Compression. Thank you
I've recently made comments about how much better Auro 3D is over Atmos. With this setting of loud management turned off, would you say that Atmos is now on par with Auro 3D? What is your preferred upmixer now?
I'm still using Auro-3D for a lot of things. Again, since I left my home, I was not able to get a lot of my physical media or my hard drives with all my movies. It's hard to say unless I have some content to watch.
I just got a chance to compare the two outputs, and to me the Auro 3D still stands out, but have loud management off does improve the Atmos experience.
Good afternoon TD. I want to complete a major calibration. However, with Dirac Live, Dirac Bass Control. Mini DSP, and your Spatial Audio Calibration. I'm a little confused. Do I need to Dirac Live and Dirac Bass Control, then use your disc??
What am I doing wrong please? By streaming I have plenty of Dolby stuff, including Atmos. How do I input them in order to turn Loudness Management off then Dynamic Compression off. If I am viewing them and then press the Setup button on the remote of my Marantz NR1711, go to Audio, I don't see LM. Do I need an input for the signal connected direct to the AVR? Shouldn't the signals from the TV be going to the AVR for processing via the HDMI eARC? I do not play BluRays.
This is like how on TVs, you have to run them in SDR, HDR10, HDR10+, Dolby Vision, and HLG modes to properly calibrate them. In the web world, we have this concept of tabs. They allow you to switch between various settings screens; it'd be nice if I could modify Atmos settings without playing Atmos content. IMAX Enhanced is the same! Does this also enable for DTS:X? What about Auro-3D mode?
Oh yeah, it is annoying. It’s the same with Auro-3D, you need that type of content playing in order to make adjustments to the surround mode. I get what they are doing, but it’s still a PITA.
Thank you very much for the video. I stream tv through TH-cam tv and for the life of me I cannot figure out how to get to page to change this on my new marantz receiver so any help is greatly appreciated. I am 99% certain this needs to be turned off.
Currently I have a Marantz 7015 running 7.2.4 withe a separate amp for the back two high speakers. I’m going to get a Emotiva Basex 3channel to run the LCR. The question I have is do I need to redo the Spatial audio calibration after adding the amp?
Hi Techno Dad, WOW, turned off loudness compression, you’ve just transformed my Denon A110 and svs ultra/elevations/dual sb3000, 7.2.8, I can hear Atmos now, so I have to watch my 4k blu rays again.
I’m assuming this won’t work unless you have atmos speakers?? Can you still select atmos to use this setting without affecting the other speakers? Or will the room correction stop you from proceeding? Thanks
I have a Denon X4400H, I set it to off. I even set Cinema EQ to off. But didn't notice anything different. Played 2 movies on atmos parts back and forth toggling with settings on and off in comparison but didn't hear anything different.
A good find - for many years I've used my Marantz in home cinema mode for movies etc. Now I've hooked up a turntable and while "source direct" sounds fine I would still like to tweak the bass and treble options. It's taking me a while to get my head round it - any quick tips so treble/bass can be adjusted?
Hi! Thank you for watching! Press the option button to access treble and bass control for whatever input you have. I’m not sure Direct will allow that, though…

I'm gonna have to check this on my Pioneer. Ive noticed atmos is always quiet. Especially on dialog
Yes, please do! Also, let me know where it is in the Pioneer menu. I don't have my Pioneer anymore...
I will change this on my Marantz 6014.
Nice!
Hi.. should I keep Cinema eq off as well..?
Hello Techno Dad..Im using Tonewinner AT2300 AV reciever in my settings there us DRC mode which i should turn on or off or Auto..Its Dynamic Range Compression.
Thank you
thanks for tip, will have to check my Denon
Giddy-up!
thanks , is this only for atmos, or does it also affect DD+ and other dolby formats?
I've recently made comments about how much better Auro 3D is over Atmos. With this setting of loud management turned off, would you say that Atmos is now on par with Auro 3D? What is your preferred upmixer now?
I'm still using Auro-3D for a lot of things. Again, since I left my home, I was not able to get a lot of my physical media or my hard drives with all my movies. It's hard to say unless I have some content to watch.
I just got a chance to compare the two outputs, and to me the Auro 3D still stands out, but have loud management off does improve the Atmos experience.
Game changer. 👍🏾
I think so!
Good afternoon TD. I want to complete a major calibration. However, with Dirac Live, Dirac Bass Control. Mini DSP, and your Spatial Audio Calibration. I'm a little confused. Do I need to Dirac Live and Dirac Bass Control, then use your disc??
Loving all thr new Vids.
Thank you, Davon.
Channa feature works with dolby surround
Nice!
@@TechnoDad channa i have the denon avr. 6800h i wod like to contact you on facetime
Hi how about Onkyo AVR should the Loudness Management be off?
But wait, how do you actually set new db levels? Using the pink noise from the denon receiver or the pink noise from the disc you are playing?
Thank you! This worked for me.
Nice!
Not on by default
Hi! You need to be sending the Marantz a Dolby Atmos signal. Since you’re using TH-cam TV, you won’t be sending an Atmos signal to your AVR.
Deos running Audyssey change the Marantz warm sound signature
Currently I have a Marantz 7015 running 7.2.4 withe a separate amp for the back two high speakers. I’m going to get a Emotiva Basex 3channel to run the LCR. The question I have is do I need to redo the Spatial audio calibration after adding the amp?
Thanks for the advice. Mine was on. 😮
No worries!
Hi Techno Dad, WOW, turned off loudness compression, you’ve just transformed my Denon A110 and svs ultra/elevations/dual sb3000, 7.2.8, I can hear Atmos now, so I have to watch my 4k blu rays again.
Awesome! Great news!
I’m assuming this won’t work unless you have atmos speakers?? Can you still select atmos to use this setting without affecting the other speakers? Or will the room correction stop you from proceeding?
Thanks
I mean, you would have to trick the AVR to thinking there’s an Atmos speakers and then send an Atmos signal just to get into this menu item.
I have a Denon X4400H, I set it to off. I even set Cinema EQ to off. But didn't notice anything different. Played 2 movies on atmos parts back and forth toggling with settings on and off in comparison but didn't hear anything different.
It’s harder to hear with normal content. I used pink noise because it’s easier to notice the difference as it’s all frequencies at once.
I got the 4400 too but only says sub on or off,i stream everything
Jesus, the difference in my 4800 is enormous!! Do I need to run the calibration again with this setting Off?
Yeah, probably…
A good find - for many years I've used my Marantz in home cinema mode for movies etc. Now I've hooked up a turntable and while "source direct" sounds fine I would still like to tweak the bass and treble options. It's taking me a while to get my head round it - any quick tips so treble/bass can be adjusted?
Hi! Thank you for watching! Press the option button to access treble and bass control for whatever input you have. I’m not sure Direct will allow that, though…
Hey Techno Dad! I’m cooling my jets while I await arrival of my spatial audio calibration disk - thank you in advance!! - is this change (turning loudness management off) something that just needs to be done once?I have a marantz av7706. So if I get this right, insert atmos disk into player, enter setup on AVR, select audio, select surround parameters, turn off loudness management and cinema eq, exit out from menu? Thanks again!
Hi Techno Dad I have a Denon avr x 4800h. I do not see this option. what to do my sound level is so low, I have to always be 60 and up to have decent volume. Please help.
Did you send a Dolby Atmos signal to the AVR first?
So did you have the compression on the whole time you've had that receiver?
Yes…
Made the adjustment on my Marantz 7703 it made no difference. Did I miss something?
