But if you are familiar with the nuance of the situation, you can tell this guy takes genuine pride in their food and is approaching this with the joyful attitude of sharing something he loves.
1. He is not a low grade server
2. Multiple workers are standing around waiting for the opportunity to be of service
3. Cracking jokes and bragging about prizes
4. Giving Ollie the Abuelitas
None of these things are required, it's a token of genuine hospitality from someone who isn't concerned about earning a tip.
For those of us regulars at Eldorado know Joel is the GOAT. Dude will treat ANYONE like he did you guys, regardless of fame.

Smile at your neighbors, ask them for sugar, borrow their lawnmower. Maybe they’ll stop in and give you some money to get it trimmed if they notice it particularly overgrown and you can’t get on top of it. It’s a different world

I mean they are doing free advertising for his restaurant. You'd pay a hell of a lot more for a 1mil view advertisement than just a plate of donuts and almond milk.
Also it’s 100% our sport to watch non natives try our spicy sauces. They always underestimate and watching that realization hit is high entertainment. My money is on them deliberately watching for the Brits to hit the salsa.
Owner needed to find something else to do ... Huge Over-Sell. Other guest don't get this attention. Very off/putting. Give them a welcome, show them the food they are getting with a very brief explanation.. and get the hell out of the video after that.

The fact that the owner saw them taste their hottest salsa and immediately brought milk and donuts. That's a business owner who genuinely treats his customers as his own family.. Awesome to see..

I admire that restaurant owners hustle. He's not afraid of new media and totally embraced the Jolly crew. He knew if he made the experience special it would reflect in the video. This is amazing advertising for his restaurant and he totally deserves it!

Going back soon and I always would pass this spot and never went in. Now imma make it a point.
In all fairness, if you have an award winning restaurant in Austin of all places, you’re gonna be accustomed to that kind of customer. Austin’s chock full of the eccentric types. I’m sure if they went to an ol’ abuella’s restaurant in San Antonio they’d have a much different reception.
Worked for me. Planning to go to the restaurant on my next venture to Austin. I live a few hours away, so it's totally doable.

I mean, Abuelita Mexican chocolate disks are quite a different product than powdered Nesquik, so I wouldn't say that Olly was right, but I'll give him credit for being close since they're made by the same company (Nestle).

We love getting to know people of different cultures, races, backgrounds,etc despite what you see or hear from the media. Plus, we have so many different types of good food. Why? That is a result of having so many different immigrants who came to this country. We truly are a melting pot. Cheers!

I’ve lived in Austin for 30 years and watched Jolly for 5. I am incredibly happy to see my favorite Tex Mex joint featured. Joel’s been kicking around Austin kitchens and restaurants for years. His team at El Dorado deserve ALL the goodwill and recognition. Deceptively simply food with layers and layers of amazing flavor and great staff who will make you feel like a regular customer the minute you walk in.
I LOVE Eldorado! So glad they chose to go there ♥️♥️
He seems like a pretty cool guy. The hospitality there is just second to none.
sounds so good! Last time i was in Austin, i went to The Salt Lick BBQ. Simply awesome! What's the best BBQ in AUstin and next time i'm there i'm definitley gonna check out the El Dorado! Great vid!
@@shanecrowe5955 So many “best” bbq joints. Franklin’s gets the most media coverage and their brisket is definitely the best in the area most consistently. It tastes like it was made from the happiest cows on Planet Earth. It’s really special. They accept a limited number of pick up orders 30 days in advance if you want to skip the multiple hours wait.
Snow’s in Lexington (50 mins outside of outside of Austin, Saturday AM only) has won Texas Monthly’s Best BBQ twice (pork ribs, sausage, smoked chicken, and beans are their best offerings.) This is my personal favorite.
Leroy & Lewis is killing it right now and, wow, a major talent.
Terry Blacks is a Best All Around because every dish and side is an A or A+ and they have their operation running right. You experience less of “Item Sold Out” 20 minutes after opening then at many other spots. If you are coming from out of town and don’t want to miss out on a variety of meats, TB is always a solid choice. Their bottled condiment sauces (not bbq sauce, more like Hot Ones hot sauces) like Chipotle Mustard are available for sale and a great way to elevate sandwiches and eggs back home.
Interstellar in Cedar Park (15 mins Northwest) is another huge up-and-comer but it seems difficult to make enough BBQ to meet demand. Saturdays have a bigger menu with some featured meats but it’s very limited. Honestly, it’s such a crapshoot, I haven’t even tried ordering from them for several months.

As a Mexican, I love Tex-Mex food. But you should also travel to Oaxaca Mexico and try real Molé
It's sad that most of the world thinks Mexican food is just tacos and chili rellenos. I've heard it said that Mexico has a cuisine as diverse as China.
@@kansashoneybadger7899 just get any of Diana Kennedy's books. She did the same thing - in the 50's and 60's. The recipes are authentic, and her recipes cover each region of the country. But I still make my late mil's mole. It's the only one he will eat lol.

Fact: there are more than 500 variations of mole, in all colors and textures, being the mole poblano (the one they tried in the video) the most well known. And yes, most of mole recipes comes from Oaxaca state. And no, the real recipe doesn't include commercial chocolate but true cacao (or at least, raw cocoa) and other 25 ingredients.
Believe me there are plenty of places to try "real" mole in Texas.
As a Latina and a native Texan, there's was a certain level of pride that filled me when they said authentic Mexican food is incomparable to Taco Bell.
I lived in Austin for 15 years and have since relocated to CO. The Mexican fare up here can't compare to real TX tex-mex. They do have a Chuys up here so that's what I eat when I get a craving. I haven't eaten at a taco bell since I moved to TX and probably will never again!
Pride is right! Its great food. There are so many regional Mexican restaurants here in California as well. Mexican fast food is a joke compared to real food.

I'm from Tucson, so Sonoran is my flavor, but yeah. Taco bell isn't actual Mexican food.
First, Taco Bell doesn't claim to be traditional Mexican food. Texas changed that food to Tex-Mex for a reason. Americans like flour tortillas, cheese, beef for fajitas and crispy tacos. We love queso. NONE of that is Mexican. Period. How can you compare the two? Mexico uses hominy, tripe, goat, and a lot of peppers. It's like Mexico doesn't make comparable fried chicken or hamburgers. Italian American is not the same as different regions of Italy. I, personally, don't like interior Mexican cooking. Shrug.

Well for all its flaws, and it has many, Texas has some of the most welcoming people in the states, if not the world.
Right. You can tell they didn't start out with the idea of making money, then settled on a TexMex restaurant as a way to do it. They started out wanting to share their good food, and now presumably make money doing it. That's a recipe for sustainable real success.
I love how quick they were to bring the milk because they were watching XD They must've had such a good laugh seeing that before going "oh right get the donuts and milk to save the brits"

Nesquick is overly sweet and because of that it can end up messing with your stomach but Abuelita has that perfect balance of sweetness and creaminess that makes it so hard to emulate. I actually made some for my family a few days ago and we paired it with fresh conchas from the Mexican bakery near us.
Yeah my family loves their Swiss Miss but not me. They’re pretty typical picky eaters.

Mole is a huge dish in Mexico. Everyone has their own recipes, but most will include chocolate, peanut butter, almonds, dried chilis, and about 30 other ingredients. It's usually served at weddings or quincineras, or other special occasions. It's usually served over bone in chicken.
I so miss it. My aunt use to make it it for our family unions, she married a Mexican and her mother in law taught her how to make her husband’s favorite dishes. Her mole was always gone first without everyone getting some, huge family and she bought 2 huge dishes of it. I asked her to teach me, nope she wouldn’t break her promise to her mother in law.
Before I began teaching Hispanic kids in high school classes, I had never once heard or thought of adding chili to chocolate. Brilliant!!

as a mexican I was started to feeling a little offended by ollie's comment about mole flavor combination of "nesquik and fajitas" but then I realized that is the most British reaction 😂
He does that everywhere, comparing food to something with which he is familiar.
The comment that got me was "we don't have these types of flavors in Britain." XD With the exception of foods from invaded countries, Britain doesn't have flavors, full stop.
The Eastern hemisphere wouldn't have cacao, vanilla, tomatoes, chilies, potatoes or maize; The Western hemisphere wouldn't have citrus, apple, banana, mango, coffee, tea, wheat, onion, or rice without the Columbian exchange.
Most of the most famous national dishes of Asia, Europe and and the Americas, wouldn't exist without plants and sometimes animals from the opposite hemisphere, brought by Europeans.

They took SUCH good care of you, omg! I love when you guys come to The States and have a pleasant experience. Just came back to the States after living in the UK for a year and a half- first thing I did was go for Mexican- I actually cried eating my first chip.
Hopefully it was away from Texas, somehow better Mexican food resides everywhere else but Texas.

I'm not surprised that their restaurant was so busy when you have that type of food, that type of freshness, and that type of incredible service and passion. This video makes me want to book a trip to Texas to literally just try that restaurant.

Dude that owner was just top notch. Obviously he knows the benefit from this video will be great, but also the fact that he seems genuinely chill and passionate.
The dude is like this at 11am on a Monday or 9pm on a Saturday. Can't say enough about this restaurant and all their staff.

I went to a few places in Texas and while each were a bit different, the restaurants were all the same. A lovely southern accent, great hospitality, but they do NOT do sweet tea lol so be forewarned 😋 (at least the places I went- did not)

Like I said, the places I went did not. I was shocked! They handed me unsweetened with sugar packets lol I visited San Antonio, and a few places through Wichita Falls. *Shrugs
Texas IMO is a food paradise and is diversified as the people. No matter where you are there will be something you like and reminds you of home. Even in deep East Texas there is a large diversity of cuisines from Cajun to what I call country food (peas, corn, okra, turnip greens, fried catfish). The one that binds us all is Tex-Mex and places like Eldorado Café exemplifies Texas hospitality.
Every bite, Josh closes his eyes with internal reflection. Ollie on the other hand, rolls his eyes upward as if he's looking for the food Gods! Love it!

Love that you guys liked tex mex food.. 😊 As a proud mexican I can say authentic mole sauce does include chocolate amoung other ingredients and I believe it was a meal they prepared for the aztec kings and gods.. I could be wrong take it with a grain of salt. Blessings!

@@PorcupinePunched wrong! Traditionally Molé has the chocolate bars he handed him. There are different states in Mexico that will swap out the brand or tartness by using dark chocolate and some will even make their own chocolate bars from scratch and use them but the recipe requires chocolate bars.
@@geniuswithacapitalk No, not wrong. That's exactly what I said. You use Abuelita, not Nesquik like Ollie said. So my point still stands.
@@PorcupinePunched Although no states in Mexico traditionally use Nesquik or other powder hot chocolate mixes on their mole recipes, you could use it in a pinch for the chocolate flavor. I personally don't like it since it makes the mole sauce taste much sweeter due to the extra ingredients added to them and I'm not a fan of sweet sauces, but you could definitely use it.
And btw... He's 100% correct in saying that in different states we use different chocolates for our mole. Abuelita is the most common store-bought chocolate but there's many brands that can be used for mole. In the state of Chihuahua there's a preference for Oso chocolate and in the south it is much more common to buy homemade chocolate bars.
@@ivanavila9074 I appreciate your opinion, but I have to disagree. I've only had one type of mole that I think nesquik could maybe work in, used in any others and it would just ruin the flavor profile and completely change dish. With the time and work involved in making mole who is going to settle for using the wrong ingredient?
I'm not sure what kind of family you come from, but mine and nobody's that we knew had fancy pre-mixed chocolate milk powder, we made it ourselves from cocoa and sugar because those are staple pantry ingredients and you can use them in more than one thing, like mole. Sure cocoa powder isn't traditional, but in a pinch it will work and not mess up the flavors to such an extent.
I now demand an episode where Ollie makes mole with fajita seasoning and nesquik

i demand this too. i think ollie should be given fajita stuff and nesquick then cook it versus a chef who knows how to cook mole that has actual mole ingredients. (someone don't tell Ollie that there is multiple different colored mole).

The crackers are because lots of people like to crush crackers and mix them into chili.
Some add cheese, fresh chopped onions, or sour cream. Some people do a combo of any or all of those items.
The owner is so proud and so welcoming! The hospitality makes a place 10 times better!!!!

I went to England last year as a native Texan that's half Mexican and they literally thought Nacho Cheese Doritos were Tortilla Chips. That's all you could find if you went looking for some in the local stores. Such a shame really, I was dying without some, but I didn't have enough knowledge of their ovens to figure it out and handmake em myself.
I'm confused, I'm a bit and we have plain tortilla chips everywhere,you must have met some very culturally clueless people and been to shops that don't carry a wide choice...

@rhi91 are you down in Southern England or up in Northern England? I imagine down south England (i.e.: closer in proximity to London), you will find plenty. Up in Northern England, not a single tortilla chip and I was not about to take all the trains to go down to London for a bag of tortilla chips 🤣 cuz that's crazy! And I only was able to go to Tescos because in the smaller villages up North, that's all they got. Now going to York (a big city) could probably find tortilla chips, but if I'm going to a big city, I'm not looking for my personal comfort food as a tourist. If I'm staying in the smaller villages where restaurants are just fish n chip shops, yeah. I'd appreciate some comfort food.
I'm in Austin, and Eldorado Cafe is our favorite spot. Plus, the owners are our good friends, and both of my kids work there! It really is as good as it looks in the video. No trickery there. I love that these guys had such a great experience. Everybody should check it out when they are in Austin.
I'm watching this a second time in a row right now, both your reactions to the food just make me happy. Especially Josh, how half the time his eyes go wide and the other half they're closed and he's having a religious experience. Watching you guys eat, it just makes my day better.
Tex-Mex is a hard one because depending where you go it's going to be different. Austin is always trying out new dishes. Look for two things for a traditional meal. One check if the parking lot is full and two see if you see a lot of Hispanic or Mexican customers.
When visiting Texas it's usually best to skip Austin altogether.
This food is literally what every hole in the wall "mexican" restaurant in america serves tbh. This is no different from any mexican restuarant in north carolina that I've been to.

There is nothing in this video that I can't get at any generic mexican restaurant in the country. It may have started in texas, but it's not unique to texas. I live in coastal NC and I can drive to a shitty mexican restaurant and eat everything shown in this video.

Born and raised in San Antonio, surrounded by authentic Mexican and Tex-Mex. Y’all made me homesick. I live in New Orleans now, so I traded one amazing cuisine for another (I’m Cajun) but MAN, I miss a good queso and some fajitas every now and then. They hooked y’all up, too.

The saltines are optional. They're meant to be crumbled on top of the chili and then you eat it with a spoon. Everything looks so yummy!
Saltines in regard to soup and chili are divisive with my family and southern in-laws! I crumble saltines in my soup, stew, chili. My husband and his family eat a spoonful then eat a saltine. Drives me nuts lol

I love mole but the recipes I've seen don't necessarily call for that specific brand of chocolate so I've never bought it to make mole either.

Still owned by the same company,Nestle. When it comes to hot Mexican chocolate I much prefer Ibarra. At least then I know I’m actually drinking a Mexican brand. Abuelita is still ok though. I’d just rather not when given the option.

I stock up on the Abuelita syrup so I can have a nice tall glass of chocolate milk. Nestlé Quick does nothing for me now that I am addicted to Abuelita chocolate.
I make my husband Iced Abuelita, and it totally takes him back to his childhood. It's such a yummy distinctive flavor.
Abuelita was a Mexican actress that Nestle asked if she wanted to be the face of thee chocolate. She said yes, she was already known as Mexico's abuelita. So it fit perfectly.

Here in the Northeast we were not spoiled for goodTed Mex and Mexican food. It was almost unavailable, at least in NYC, until 20-30 years ago. Now, so many people from Puebla are our new neighbors.

Texas mexican restaurants always serve chips and salsa without additional cost. Its the first thing on the table and they tell a lot about the food.

You eat chili with a spoon, Josh 😊 The crackers can be crumbled on top and mixed in if you like. On the other hand, however you get it into your mouth pretty much works 😁

Yeah oddly enough my wife n I know a restaurant that does it so well it’s incredible. I’ve also asked if I could have a glass of the salsa to drink, but they brought me a slightly bigger bowl instead.

Mole Negro is basically dried chilis, sesame seeds and unsweetened chocolate mixed with tomatoes and cooked down. There are a lot of additional spices and flavorings but that is the idea. Making mole sauce is a project. Mexican chocolate has cinnamon in it. I usually use plain cocoa powder for convenience but you do not need the milk and sugar from Nesquik.
Mole is real Mexican food from Oaxaca Mexico. There are many different moles, but the chocolate one is the most famous, The rest of your meal is an American adaptation, Tex-Mex. Tacos in Mexico come on small soft corn tortillas.

As a mexican american that goes to mexico 3x a year for months i guarantee u using “Abuelita Hot Choclate” is accurate and everybody uses it for there mole ours doesnt have cheese on top of it but the Abuelita is correct and hands down best Hot Chocolate with bolio or a concha😮💨

You won’t be disappointed! As an Austinonian for the last 30 years, El Dorado is my fave Tex Mex in town. I am sitting here in London desperately craving their salsa X. Tips: make a reservation even though it’s a chill joint, order some chips and a salsa trio to go because you’ll still be thinking about it later (and the chips hold up to a wait). Closed on Mondays.

Oh dear, I grew up drinking Chocolate Presidencial (or Chocolate Morelia, the one with the nun on the bag) and some good ol' Choco Milk. Anyway, Abuelita never fails.
