The fire painting is so nostalgic for me, me and my great grandad played Mario 64 together (he watched me play essentially) all the time when I was 3-4. And I remember we just called it the mean man painting or something of the sorts. Always think about that when replaying it nowadays
That secret Big Boo laugh... that's the most recent thing for me. I was actually playing All-Stars on the Switch about a month ago now, and I got that laugh. I had it recorded but accidentally deleted it when I started running out of video space, and dang I was kicking myself so hard afterwards... I've noticed though, the main time it seems to play is when Big Boo laughs at the very second you head through the front door of the manor, and both the audio of the opening door and his laugh play. The timing is INSANELY hard to get though, and I haven't been able to get that laugh since. As a kid amazingly, the piano and Unagi never scared me, but Tiny Huge Island's fish traumatized me. The eel just kinda swims around, minding his own business, the piano you never need to deal with other than getting the red coin. They'd hurt if you touch them, but that's about it. But those fish... the way they swim at you, mouth open to actually eat and OHKO you was genuinely terrifying and disturbing to me. It still kinda is to this day.
I thought I was the only one. That fish traumatized me as a kid to the point I was constantly having nightmares about it. To this day whenever I play SM64 or watch a let's play of it, I just feel unease when they reach the THI level.
A thing I notice nobody really brings up (as far as I've seen) is that the town in WDW has those black spheres that usually shoot fire at you when you get close. But in WDW, they don't move, they're dormant. Considering that they were all underwater until we lower the level, one could argue that those enemies drowned.
This game was never personalized for anybody and i just thought you should know that every copy of super mario 64 i played had everything in it all the copys should have. That theory should be thrown off the iceberg
The "inside the walls" thing is not literally inside the walls but it has to do with the fact that is said Bowser transformed everyone into bricks and now they are probably using their last powers to project themselves as toads in the world.
The Shared Nightmares one is so bizarre to me because when I was younger, I absolutely loved playing SM64 (i was like 7 or 8 back when the n64 was the console) but if I played too much I'd get horrible nightmares. I also believed that the Game Over screen triggered it so I'd turn off the game quickly if that happened or I'd restart if i got close. No other game did this to me, not even OoT (though OoT was less scary, more mysterious), Pokemon (we all know about Missingno) or even watching some more mature games that I was allowed to (like Resident Evil).
I had a dream back then that the coin with Mario's face on during one of the start-up screens said "You ain't going nowhere." Well, as an adult, I'm still playing nothing but Mario games. 😂 So, to this day, that Mario Coin was right. Goddamn it!
5 years! 5 long fricken years it took me to find out the name of the song "art of silence" that people use in videos. No youtuber would show music in descriptions, but you did! From the bottom of my heart thank you, you have a subscriber for life now!
I distinctly remember playing the one with the sunken ship and the eel for the first time. I was already uneasy from the deep water then after the eel popped out and scared the bajesus out of 9 year old me, I ran out of the living room to find my big sister and ask her to get the stars for me. She was shit at sm64, but there isn't a better sister on earth. Edit: Jolly Roger Bay! I should've known it'd show up here haha never knew the eel's name is Unagi, that's cute.
For anyone who isn't aware. We knew for a long time Luigi was planned for Mario 64, as Miyamoto has said numerous times in interviews that the game was originally planned to be multiplier with Luigi as the second character. We knew he was planned for the game long before the data leak. I know that kinda ruins the story of "Luigi was finally discovered in a data leak decades later", but unfortunately you can't always have a good story.
Re: Big Dud: One of the Bob-omb Buddies (the pink Bob-ombs) actually says that "King Bob-omb is nothing but a big dud now" in subsequent star missions after you defeat him. That third ball appearing specifically on any star that isn't the first one is just way too much of a coincidence...
what's cool is that if you play a rom hack called B3313 at night and visit the vanilla basement, the fireball in the lethal lava land painting will charge at you
My personal theory for the LLL painting face is that it’s supposed to represent a potaboo… or as it is more commonly known, A Lava Bubble, even though it isn’t in the game, but it is in multiple others.
almost everything on the first layer is something that i was scared of when i was younger, and the fact that all of the explanations to those things were pretty accurate to how i felt honestly scares me. the entire time i was listening to the first layer i was like "i remember being scared of that". of course i don't feel like that about those things now at all but hearing these things brings me nostalgia in a weird way.
This ended up being kinda cool. The iceberg itself seems to be nice a tribute and retake on the regular Mario 64 iceberg that blew everything up. Even before all that though I was always interested in the overabundance of stuff in this game that creeped people out as kids. So it's nice to see it all attempted to be talked about in one fine not bs video. Would be down for more Super Mario 64 iceberg charts that only have one focus. You know something I have very early memories of being scared by in this game? Nothing on here. It was Mario's head in the beginning popping up of all things that scared me lol.
I think the “each copy of the game is personalized theory” is interesting and I’m lowkey not against it because when I was little, I have a faint memory of chain chomp being in the castle courtyard and was able to follow me. As an adult, I have not seen anything online related to that occurrence.
I think its shit because like the Mandela effect encourages people to make shit up online for the sake of it. Like you guys just did. Also the processor would fry
@@livanbard You make it nefarious but it's really not. Our memories are much less reliable than we think they are. They probably don't even think they are making it up.
23:54 Heart of Darkness also has that death scene but it's even more scary and disturbing because it happens to a CHÍLD, in fact that game has loads of disturbing death scenes.
I'll admit there is only one character that I have ever liked the eyes sewn shut look on and it was that one character I think his name was no face and it was on twisted Metal black so pretty much I don't know if he was an esteemed boxer or someone like glass Joe but let me just say those characters had a better backstory than the twisted Metal 2013 edition at least I think it was 2013. let me just say I would go back to that game whenever I wanted if I could.
I love seeing all this Super Mario 64 spooky content, it makes me kinda wish I could've been born a little earlier in history to play this when it was new but I like my 21st century technology and can't time travel anyways lol. At least later it came out on DS and PC!
The liminality and how alot of thingd are just off or slightly creepy honestly just makes this game feel more like home. I always come back and explore levels for fun its like coming back to your hometown or visiting your childhood home
26:40 I see the princess (left of cake [above the steam of the tea] Mario (behind the cake or right of it )(and yoshi? or Luigi *busting a N U T* ? ) in the background of the cake.
24:49 is actually a reference to a personalized entity called Mother Dorrie,it is known as a hostile boss in the level and tho Mother Dorrie is very rare to occur in copies of Super Mario 64 the sign still reminds for the original boss of the level that was in official releases
One of the things you got wrong is the end screen. There is something in the background, im prettyl sure its a poorly drawn yoshi face on a box or something. You can see the face a little bit in the back and I see why its scary.
I think what I like about SM64 is that despite being in the enemies claws not knowing if Bowser would explode out of one of the doors and chase me down and into the forest like it appears on the cartridge game box, seeing Toad stuck in their corners made it sad. Despite Mario being alone it didn’t fully feel lonely. There was a lot of color, there was a lot of music, and I felt Mario could take on anyone and anything
The Peach painting slowly transforming into a Bowser painting has the potential to have that Dave Chappelle sound clip as soon as Mario falls into the hole in the floor: BOWSER: "GOTCHA, BITCH!" 😂😂😂😂😂
26:45 When you said that people see something in the background I was curious and looked behind the cake and I got scared the second I realized that it looks like some sort of disturbed Joshi
I remember when I played Mario 64, I had a used cartridge. So I played off the save files already on it, never seeing the opening. So when I got to the mirror room and saw I wasn't alone but couldn't see anything behind by turning around freaked me out
Imma share something odd that makes me believe it’s personalized:So I got sm64 on the virtual console on the wiiu and I didn’t really play it so some years later I booted it up and I sucked at the game. However when the game was on expansion pack I played it a ton and I got a lot farther in the game so maybe it is personalized
Mario has never scared me at all, however the one thing that was pure nightmare fuel for me was the Tarrs from Slime Rancher. Pretty much they spawned and would eat all your slimes. The reasons why this scared me, was the slightly ominous music and the sounds they made- it kinda sounded like bones crunching or something similar. They just felt super dark for that game and literally gave me nightmares for a month after seeing them for the first time when I was younger.
Tip for the future: actually show what you're talking about ! I was listening to this as a podcast, and, when you mentioned something especially interesting, I came to check the video... and you just showed regular footage of the level.
I really dont understand some of these entries, why cant a sign to tell people to shut up be a sign. Or 120 stars just being a goal to make a long game, even the emptiness of the game is highly likely due to technical restraints
The sky boxes for me especially Bob-omb Battlefield and Jolly Roger Bay were not scary but made me feel more like there was more out there and curious as to what was beyond the level, I remember playing the DS version (the N64 version was before my time) and wanting to explore the islands in the sky box in Bob-omb Battlefield or what was beyond the rocks in Jolly Roger Bay
The Mario 64 piano room and the Original Doom level with the maze full of pinkies are my top two, “I’m gonna quit here and come back later (never)” rooms.
Jolly roger bay never scared me so much when I was a kid, it was dire dire docks. When i first entered that level I remember being absolutely terrified, so much that I paused my game and turned the game off. I believe this has caused a lot of my water phobia.
I've always had a little thalassophobia and I do remember experiencing that in Joy Roger's Bay the first time I played. Eventually it became one of my favorite levels (I adore the music) but yeah. creepy. I definitely was one of those who got a lot of weird stuff out of the game as a kid owing a lot to it being my first 3D game and it being such a weird, isolated experience. Also one of the things that makes wet dry world feel strange is you can tell that you're outside, but it plays the music that has been used for underground levels since literally the first game. It's just a weird convergence of so many tiny oddities that it combines into the most iconic creepy level in the game.
5:58 The coolest, and possibly creepiest, part of that is that it was discovered *_24_* years and *_1_* month after the release of SM64. 2401. Also, 2+4+0+1 = 7, and 24+01 = 25. 7/25. July 25, the day L was found to be real.
yeah this fact is something that needs to be brought up more. one of the craziest coincidences (hmm...) ive actually ever seen, seeing as how invested ive been since a kid to the whole "L is Real 2401" thing
When I was 8 years old I always had an odd feeling from the game, and then I remember talking to one of the toads and he was saying there were monsters inside of the walls and idk maybe I was just a dumb kid or something but that to this day creeps me out bc I never heard of anybody reading that or seeing it
I’ve ALWAYS thought that the Lethal Lava Land painting is just flames with Bowser’s face, it looks really similar. Also, do you legit believe some copies are different than others..? Like cmon. The thing people see in the background of the end screen is actually the face behind the cake, it’s actually a picture hung on the wall of Yoshi’s face.
I miss our N64. It broke then years later we got a Wii. We had this and other games on the Wii but accidentally left it and a bunch of games at a hotel room and never got it back :/
You know how you mentioned the death animations? Well, there's also Bowser's face closing in on your character whilst laughing and I just wanted to point that out for you.
I'm 33 and I still have nightmares about this game... specially ones in which I'm falling desperately into the void or falling and landing on floating islands. Seriously, it's disturbing!! I hate having those dreams. Some other Mario dreams are cool, tho, when I dream about finding secret paths inside courses I create in my mind. haha
Anyone ever have a nightmare specifically of the hall that leads to the haunted courtyard, when Big Boo first appears? That's the only Mario 64 nightmare I ever had, yet it's popped up so many times.
I always thought the flame painting was a distorted version of Bowser, very stylised but I think it is fairly obvious

Thank you
The fire painting is so nostalgic for me, me and my great grandad played Mario 64 together (he watched me play essentially) all the time when I was 3-4.
39:28 actually, the theory of princess peach trapped in the stained glass seems true because when we save peach, she appears from the stained glass
I love how people assumed the ghoul medal isn’t a silly pun with gold medal but an actual item lol
Sm64 is a revolutionary game in ways we didn’t expect
100% agree.
I really enjoyed playing it as a kid, and I still have a fondness towards it today.
i was gonna make a pun, but project revolution is the Wii.
Pretty sure “Ghoul Medal” is just a joke and a play on words of Gold Medal
This was a very entertaining iceberg video
Can't wait to see more like this
I have so many planned so I'm glad you liked it.
Isn't the face in the Lethal Lava Land painting supposed to just be a fiery Bowser...?
What’s cool to me is that some of the creepy, eerie, or mysteriousness of some of this was later put into Mario 64 DS. Like the mirror room.
I never had nightmares with SM64, but playing the first Doom on my PC caused them. I even had one when I watched a gameplay recently.
I had a dream back then that the coin with Mario's face on during one of the start-up screens said "You ain't going nowhere." Well, as an adult, I'm still playing nothing but Mario games. 😂 So, to this day, that Mario Coin was right. Goddamn it!
Mario 64 players when they read a normal sign. (too scary!)
Same here, I'm 25 and still frightened of that thing
That third ball appearing specifically on any star that isn't the first one is just way too much of a coincidence...
what's cool is that if you play a rom hack called B3313 at night and visit the vanilla basement, the fireball in the lethal lava land painting will charge at you
dang, perfect timing, I was just looking for new icebergs to watch
I try to time things well.
Dantavius dropped an internet mysteries iceberg today. If you haven't watched him before, you're in for a treat
I'm glad someone finally addressed the bowser laugh and the musical cue associated with it FUCKING SCARY
YES! THANK YOU!
THAT USED TO TERRIFY ME AS A KID
You’re welcome
Nintendo: so people got scared of the eel in Mario 64? Ok, lets ramp up that fear multiple times in Majora's Mask.
Looking back sm64 and 64ds feel like alternative time lines to each other.
My personal theory for the LLL painting face is that it’s supposed to represent a potaboo… or as it is more commonly known, A Lava Bubble, even though it isn’t in the game, but it is in multiple others.
8:35 bruh, that’s a stylized Bowser
1:56 is where the video starts for anyone wondering
almost everything on the first layer is something that i was scared of when i was younger, and the fact that all of the explanations to those things were pretty accurate to how i felt honestly scares me. the entire time i was listening to the first layer i was like "i remember being scared of that". of course i don't feel like that about those things now at all but hearing these things brings me nostalgia in a weird way.
Life is always good when sacrow drops
I always thought "ghoul medal" was just a silly pun lol
luigi:"hey bro what do you fear most" mario:"pianos"
The piano scared the living shit out of me 😂
If you look behind the cake. You can see a painting of yoshi! I think that’s what they were talking about
Yeah. I saw it. I think the fact that it's staring at the cake that has tiny Mario and peach on it
This ended up being kinda cool.
Mario Head: "Press Start to play!"
No way. I literally just started watching a bunch of videos like this and this just came out, what timing!
This is an absolutely INCREDIBLE piece... it really takes me back to that sort of that 90s haunting atmosphere
Just because Luigi was planned for SM64 doesn't mean the fountain says "L is Real 2401".
I think the “each copy of the game is personalized theory” is interesting and I’m lowkey not against it because when I was little, I have a faint memory of chain chomp being in the castle courtyard and was able to follow me. As an adult, I have not seen anything online related to that occurrence.
I feel like I remember this too, but only on my og 64 copy, but idk if it was real or if I dreamed it
I think its shit because like the Mandela effect encourages people to make shit up online for the sake of it. Like you guys just did.
Also the processor would fry
@@livanbard stay mad
@@livanbard You make it nefarious but it's really not. Our memories are much less reliable than we think they are. They probably don't even think they are making it up.
You had to get the star that was attached to the end of the chain chomp's chain right?
23:54 Heart of Darkness also has that death scene but it's even more scary and disturbing because it happens to a CHÍLD, in fact that game has loads of disturbing death scenes.
The ghoul medal is just a pun my dude.
I think the "weird thing in the background" of the end screen is that weirdass clock that seems to have a yoshi face on it. Looks really uncanny.
thats a clock???
@@RoachCatJr hey, just saying what I think it looks like. It's all blurred and fucked.
"Sorry Mario, but our Princess is in another castle".
I love seeing all this Super Mario 64 spooky content, it makes me kinda wish I could've been born a little earlier in history to play this when it was new but I like my 21st century technology and can't time travel anyways lol. At least later it came out on DS and PC!
Villain's evil laugh is... le scary? NOOO HOW COULD THEY HAVE DONE THIS IN A KID'S GAME?! I'M GOING INSANEEEEEE!!
You can see the face a little bit in the back and I see why its scary.
the weird thing is that it returns in the completely remade end screen of the DS version. wish this was brought up
Yeah... It's the fact it's staring the cake down, with mini Mario and peach toppers
The ghoul medal might just be a gold medal play on words
that textureless mario picture slowly bring more visible as the explanation went on was pretty friggin’ creepy. Kinda gave me slenderman vibes ngl
The Peach painting slowly transforming into a Bowser painting has the potential to have that Dave Chappelle sound clip as soon as Mario falls into the hole in the floor:
BOWSER: "GOTCHA, BITCH!"
😂😂😂😂😂
Am i just tired or did this actually make me fall asleep? Love the video but i think the calming voice got me lol
ah yes that personalised AI they had in games back then.... oh wait they never did
Ghoul medal is a play on the words Gold Medal
I really dont understand some of these entries, why cant a sign to tell people to shut up be a sign. Or 120 stars just being a goal to make a long game, even the emptiness of the game is highly likely due to technical restraints
I'm glad they fixed that perpetual loneliness in Sunshine, where every level felt alive and vibrant. That is one of my favorite games of all time.
I remember playing this game and for some reason I felt nothing scary except for the piano
Same
5:54 Yup and we ended up getting Luigi, Yoshi and Wario in Mario 64 DS.
The Mario 64 piano room and the Original Doom level with the maze full of pinkies are my top two, “I’m gonna quit here and come back later (never)” rooms.
8:18 wow, 26 years and I never once thought to knock the big bully onto the platform on the side. Hm.
Big Bully and his minions are always thrusting Mario off platforms... or into corners. 😂
Jolly roger bay never scared me so much when I was a kid, it was dire dire docks. When i first entered that level I remember being absolutely terrified, so much that I paused my game and turned the game off. I believe this has caused a lot of my water phobia.
I’m so glad I found your channel!! I love these long iceberg videos - thank you 🙏
The fire ball in the painting of lethal lava land is supposed to kinda resemble the Bowser symbol/face
Damn. Bowser really is evil underneath his humorous undertones.
This game always creeped me out as a kid and even more so now …
The lethal lava land painting looks like a distorted demonic bowser face
Goul medal is just a play on words of gold medal
Who else as a kid thought if you could get past the invisible walls surrounding the levels you could travel to the land in the skybox
All I know is that Mario 64 awakened the Thalassophobia in my childhood
Same.
which phobia is that?
@@thefatplumberman6135 Fear of the ocean or deep waters
Without a doubt these icebergs are great they are just so great thank you sacrow
This video is great 👍👌👏
Keep making more icebergs please
OMG YES. I remember having a nightmare like that!
