Another tip for new players. There are a couple of quests that will allow you to acquire free fantasias, so if you do end up realizing after a bit that you really don't like what you picked as your starting character, you do not have to spend any money to get a do-over.
Also, if you’re just needing a haircut/face makeover, just call the aesthetician. You get one (or two) free makeovers, and then they’re only like 5k gil.
You can also use the benchmark to get a good idea of what any given character design will look like in the real game at no cost, and any characters made in the benchmarks can be imported into the real game's character creator directly.
The benchmark was a program released before the release of Dawntrail, which allowed you to test how the game would perform on your computer and how your character would look in the new graphics update. It has a predetermined sequence of cutscenes that it will play with your character in it. But since you already have the full game, you can just create a new character, look at them in the character creator under different lighting, and save the design without actually starting the game with them! @@Maximo-Maximus
You can replay the MSQ on the same character by using the "New Game+" option, you don't get the EXP/gil from the quests a second time, but if you did skip the MSQ you can at least replay it without needing to make a new character.
11:14 Actually, you can run through the MSQ as many times as you like. It's part of the New Game+ feature. Once you've completed a section of it, you unlock that segment in the New Game+. You won't be able to get any of the experience or rewards for completing it a second(or third, or however many) time. But it does allow you to reexperience the story and dialogue. You know, if you're into that sort of thing. Some people are only in it to get to the end of the game as fast as possible. And that's cool too. But it also allows you to experience things you went through as one job, as a different job.
One tip I'd give is to do exactly what you are doing in the chat here! 10:49 Letting the other players in the group know I'm new (to the duty, to the role, and in general) has made me feel at ease while playing. My party members have been very friendly as a result. I play on PS4, so typing was difficult before I got a keyboard for it. Prior to that, I made a macro to say, “Hi! I'm new!” in party chat.
For exploration, it's not the world you want to explore (outside of a few notable exceptions), it's the seemingly useless yellow sidequests. Sometimes they unlock cool stuff like glams, emotes, mounts, minions, and various other things. I recently started clearing my map for any and all "casual" sidequests I could find, and I am so glad I did.
You're absolutely right about not being scared to die. Trust me, everyone does it at some point, and if you don't get comfortable with dying, you'll never progress more difficult content. If you decide to run savage, extreme, or ultimate content at some point, you will die a lot. Everyone does veterans and sprouts.
Things I would recommend to new players: Do all of the Hall of the Novice missions for an armor set that will carry you on every class from 15-30 and a ring that gives extra experience. Do your hunt logs as early as you can for easy experience. Create Gear Sets for every class you have unlocked in the character menu. (Now reorder them in a way that you can find what you're looking for and it's not just random) You get a few Aether Crystals you can set as favorites to have discounted teleports to them. They can be changed freely so if you find yourself repeatedly teleporting to an area, use them to save yourself some gil. (Usually cities when playing through expansions) When you go to a new city, unlock all the aethernet shards which will let you teleport the the airship landings and to the gates outside the city. Often it's cheaper to take the airship from city to city than it is to teleport there. Open the Party Finder (Party > Party Finder) and go to the settings and turn off the repeating notification that's on by default. Learn how to use the Party Finder (Most players will only use it for rare FATEs and Hunt Trains). Find someone who will do the Extreme Trials with you unsynced to clear them off your quest log. (Queueing up for them normally will more than likely end in log queue times and then mentors immediately leaving because they either don't know the fight, or have just had too many bad experiences trying to explain very hard fights to people who are completely unprepared for them.) If you want to do them synced, please use Party Finder (and probably watch a guide on the fight before. Don't try to go into extremes blind.) (Kind of recommend this for the Coil of Bahamet raid series as well as some of the fights can be pretty difficult) Go into the HUD layout, find your status info bar, hit the settings option, separate it into groups, make your Enfeeblements bar huge and obvious. (That's where the debuffs on you show up) Learn how to focus target enemies to see what they're casting. I recommend on every class putting your knockback resistance ability in the same spot on your hotbar so you aren't searching for it when you suddenly need it. (Stuns and Interrupts as well) Learn how to use stuns and interrupts. Tanks can both stun and interrupt enemies. Melee DPS can stun. Physical Range can interrupt enemies. Most enemies that are not bosses can be stunned (4 seconds for first stun, 2 seconds for the second, 1 second on the third, then the enemy is immune to being stunned for a bit, it will most likely be dead before it can be stunned again.). Interrupts can always be used when the cast bar of the enemy has a flashing outline. Spend some time just going through all of the Character Configuration settings menu. Spend some time going through the HUD layout and click the settings on all the bars to see what all can be adjusted on them. (Don't be afraid to experiment with your HUD) Click every settings gear everywhere to see what you change, form the chat settings in the bottom to the teleport settings, there's a lot you can change in this game. Add the "Materia Extraction" ability to a side hotbar for easy access. It opens up a menu where you can get free materia from armor that is 100% spirit bonded. (assuming you've done the quest) It can be found under Character > Actions & Traits > General. You can quickly tell when armor is 100% spirit bonded when the green dots turn white on the left side of the collection of dots that show your inventory on the HUD. For controller players, I strongly recommend going into System > System configuration > Wireless Controller Settings > Button Configuration and change the L3 (Left joystick click) to Execute Macro 98, then go to System > User Macros and on the 98th one put: /ac Sprint Controller players can still pull out / put away their weapons and dismount by tapping L1 and R1 at the same time.
Filling in the various area maps will give you experience and the aether currents required to fly from HW onwards, so there's still worth in poking around.
btw ther is a blue quest in limsa that let you chage your char eye color ,hair color and shape for free as long you do it ,it wil give you a stylist that you can visist in your inn room :) he vil demand a small gill fee for the transformation :)
Good advice here. Got a big tip for green dungeon and certain blue gear: Once you attain Second Lieutenant rank with your Grand Company, you can turn in that stuff for Company Seals. Go to the GC Personnel Officer and use Expert Delivery to sell off this gear. In addition to helping you rank up in your Grand Company, GC Seals can be used to buy all sorts of good stuff (like Ventures, even at the lowest level!); the selection only gets better as you rank up to maximum!
When it comes to the exploration, there are *some* things that you'd just never knew existed if you didn't look. Like the parasols you can just buy with gil from vendors in Stormblood and Shadowbringers. Or this one vendor that trades special potions for minions you can't get anywhere else! Of course, they're not *vital*, like you said, but you might find something you like! Also there's Triple Triad cards to collect!
Later on in the game you have to do some quests and explore zones to unlock flying this starts in heavensward also stormblood has eureka it has zones you basically have to explore the whole area to complete the content properly it's not the same as most rpgs but exploring does become more important till you get flying ARR just gives you flying for beating the story cause flying wasn't in the game at launch
Yeah. Often times exploring ends up more being for aether currents (which there is a compass for) or your sightseeing log (optional). Honestly, the main drive to me is just seeing the levels. There are often interesting things hidden in nooks if you enjoy seeing the level design. Not at all necessary, but it is a part of the immersion I really enjoy
my friends tried to teach me, they really did, but my first 100 hours were spent mostly running around in limsa, getting lost in uldah or playing games in gold saucer xD
As a new player, there’s a LOT to this game. It can seem overwhelming. But simply pick something and keep doing that until you decide to switch. I joined a FC that had no goals other than allowing players to enjoy the FC buffs for solo playing. You get the occasional DPS asking for a healer or tank for a dungeon. Just the way I like it.
There are merits to exploration in some cases. Some "yellow" quests have orchestration rolls or minions or even glam sets as rewards (usually the ones with banners). But you are right that there is very little in the way of random chests. Good luck on your further adventures gamer
Potions are really good if you're trying to do any of the Deep Dungeons (Palace of the Dead, Heaven on High, and Eureka Orthos) solo. They're really tough even with a party!
Hello fellow Crystal player! o/ I used to play WoW for 12 years before I switched to XIV thanks to my friend this year. Never played a FF game before that. It took me a while to get used to it, then it just clicked and I've been addicted since :)
I find desynthing unneeded gear is better than selling it. You can get materials you can sell that will probably get you more money than selling the gear itself. It also goes toward your desynth level if the gear level is higher than it.
Not sure if anyone mentioned it yet, but for new players I always tell them to take advantage of the free trial. This way you can take your time without any commitment. And it literally gives you potentially hundreds of hours of free content.

To your point on exploration, there ARE a few hidden chests in dungeons up through some of ARR. But you'll out level what gear is in them pretty quickly, so they may not be worth going for unless you need the map achievement. Run the story at your own pace! The rest of the game will still be there when you get there, no need to rush just to get to endgame things now. Don't be afraid to talk to people you see running around in cities and field zones. Who knows, maybe your new best friend is about to run past you as you are sitting under the tree in Limsa?
Leonhart jacket you get from subscribing to the game for 330 days. If you want to get it early you can also just buy a year's worth of subscription but I don't recommend it unless you're sure you're going to be playing for that long consistently.
Love the look of your character and your voice. Gonna watch this then edit what I think. EDIT: Good advice. Very solid. Can not stress enough on the finding a good FC. I also HIGHLY suggest everyone takes a look in actions & traits. Learn your moves and what they do. Learn some combos. When you start getting into raids, learn your rotations for your level.
It seems to me like a few of the big issues you had was associated with the attempt to transfer knowledge from another game. The thing about looking for chests to get potions is a case in point. In a traditional RPG like the earlier FF games, it makes some sense, but since FFXIV is an MMO, you have to come at it from that viewpoint.
A lot of good things! Just some points to add from someone who's been playing for 2 years now: You can have up to 8 characters on the entry level tiers of FFXIV (i think this holds true for the free trial?), and up to 40 with the standard subscription. So there is a bit of flexibility, along side being able to start the game fresh if you'd like! On character creation, the phenomenon of getting a good look for your character in the creation screen and them feeling different in the game world is noteable, especially given the graphics/lighting update. If you're concerend, I would highly recommend testing it with a throw away character and doing some basics in the game to see how your character looks in cutscenes and gameplay if you dont want to risk needing a fantasia. But also there are 2 free fantasias in the game currently, so you do have flexibility! I highly agree with the comments about the main story, and with game pace in general. Take your time, do what lets you enjoy it. But also! In every Inn, there is a journal called The Unending Story, which lets you view a huge selection of cutscenes across the game. Not every single one, but every voiced cutscene along side noteworthy ones. There is also a New Game+ Mode that lets you replay things like the MSQ, class quests, raids and certain trials at a moment's notice. Also! Consider the Free trial! It is an incredible bargain, letting you play up through the first 2 expansions with no time restrictions. It only limits things like joining Free Companies, player trading, market board usage, and purchasing items from the online shop (outfits, paid mounts, etc). It otherwise allows you to do so much without restriction, and it is a great start for anyone wanting to see if they like the game without committing to purchasing it and paying a sub. Highly recommend it!
The last thing I think is worth emphasizing. Final Fantasy 14 is *Built* on it's story. Everything from the MSQ, Class quests, 8 and 24 man Raids, trials, etc, all weave story into the experience, even blending together to offer interesting narratives that often cover multiple expansions. Many aspects can feel slow, especially in ARR, but it over all has some of the most gripping build up in a game I've experienced. (Even ARR's story holds a warm spot for me. It is an important step in the whole journey) When i played, I most often just did the MSQ, even tho i knew raids held extra stories that were praised, because it was difficult to build the momentum to start them (and frankly scared me lol). But genuinely, if you are interested in the narrative of this series, try anything you can. There is so much to love. Even now I have been completing various job quests and have been delighted by the stories they have. Dark Knight is often one of the most highly praised job stories (for good reason, you should try it) but I also have found jobs like Scholar, Bard, Machinist, and more to have very enjoyable questlines. And most of all, while not perfect at every step, your own character is a rich part of the world. The small but numerous ways the game characterizes you and immerses you into the world because you are as important as any other main NPC does so much for this game. There are many reasons to love ffxiv but the story and character work is like. The core foundation of it all.
I dont believe the aesthetician lets you change eye color. Unless they updated it in dawntrail but far as I know, eye color is fantasia only (i dont have an active sub rn so i cant check)
The aesthetician only lets you do cosmetic changes, ie. hairstyle and color, makeup, and tattoos. Physical changes such as eye color, eye shape, noses, race, etc. require a fantasia
@@TheKeyblader133 IIRC, eye color is covered by aesthetician. Though I don't remember ever changing my WoL's eye color ever. I've never used a Fantasia, only the aesthetician (about once or twice an expansion or so... My Femelezen needs a fresh haircut every so often).
@@powerofk you can't change eye colour at the aesthetician. you can only change limbal ring color/settings for Au Ra, which some ppl do in lieu of that option, but that is different from eye colour
Storage management is always a nightmare. Especially if you’re an omnicrafter. As for exploration, going for aether currents is required for flying. And flying is the best way to, well… quickly go around old zones to gather for your omnicrafting.
Most aether currents are next to MSQ locations, so you don't really need to explore if you just look around as you do questing. I didn't know the aether compas existed until halfway through HW because I just found all currents as I did the MSQ.
Hope you’re enjoying the game dude! Game is absolutely amazing! I’m a 10 year veteran and always down to help noobs out, come over to Goblin on Aether, great community over on Goblin, if ya ever need any help don’t be afraid to holler, Divine Ganon is my name bro 😎
Nah you're right, there's no reason to explore. It's a damn shame and something I've found very sad for all the years I've played, but that's how it is. :( Maybe one day we can get a more involved open world.
Buying potions is actually useful tho, high quality crafted potions. If a healer is dead but the tank and dps push through fighting a boss, a well timed potion can save your life. Unless the tank is skilled LV76+ warrior then.
I'll never forget being lost in ul'dah on my first day and being help by a lala who ended up inviting me to a fc that became a home in ffxiv
right lost in ul dah! lol remember that
I always used to get lost there lol
Another tip for new players. There are a couple of quests that will allow you to acquire free fantasias, so if you do end up realizing after a bit that you really don't like what you picked as your starting character, you do not have to spend any money to get a do-over.

It is an important step in the whole journey)
When i played, I most often just did the MSQ, even tho i knew raids held extra stories that were praised, because it was difficult to build the momentum to start them (and frankly scared me lol).
I got lucky with my FC, I was joining friends who migrated over from WoW so I was already kinda assured a good one.
11. don't use fantasia to change eye color use the aesthetician
They way you pronounce "Oceania" is so funny as an Australian haha
Ha! You're just like me 10yrs ago. You're doin fine
one new player tip tho. the + quests. do them they unlock stuff.
Storage management is always a nightmare. Especially if you’re an omnicrafter. As for exploration, going for aether currents is required for flying. And flying is the best way to, well… quickly go around old zones to gather for your omnicrafting.
Yep me my chocobo and all 10 retainers all full
Most aether currents are next to MSQ locations, so you don't really need to explore if you just look around as you do questing. I didn't know the aether compas existed until halfway through HW because I just found all currents as I did the MSQ.
oh she an knee are (Oceania)
It's like you couldn't decide whether to shitpost or actually be helpful but ultimately decided to help.
Thanks? 😅
@@nurddiii Sorry, was definitely just teasing you for the "don't go to server tip" I thought that was really funny!
So what you're saying is... I should go to Oceania to do my Mentor Roullete and I'll never get an ex trial or hard content?
... 🤔
Oh we were supposed to learn?
- guy who solo’d MSQ playing only Dragoon
Nah you're right, there's no reason to explore. It's a damn shame and something I've found very sad for all the years I've played, but that's how it is. :(
Maybe one day we can get a more involved open world.
I'd go to Balmung with you
Sadly you'll have to do monster kills, and the yellow quests to quickly level up All DPS classes that aren't at MSQ requirement.
Buying potions is actually useful tho, high quality crafted potions. If a healer is dead but the tank and dps push through fighting a boss, a well timed potion can save your life. Unless the tank is skilled LV76+ warrior then.
