  • With the Evora Sport 410, Lotus introduced a very expensive option - the Titanium Exhaust. Identical in design to the standard item, but 10KG lighter, people have since been talking about whether this sounds different or not.
    So, with the help of my friend James and his Exige Cup 430, we are going to do a semi-scientific comparison of the Titanium and standard exhausts.

    Thanks for the videos James.
    The noise level will also change with temperature- something to bear in mind (back pressure changes too).
    It can also be difficult to separate exhaust noise from intake noise etc. and subtle changes in wind direction can also make a difference.
    NVH is very difficult as it’s so subjective too - louder isn’t always worse preferentially but the sound meter can say differently!

    Both sound lovely! The Evora 400 (yours) having the valved exhaust is better for crawling relatively quietly through towns. I kind of like that, especially given it sounds so good when the valves are open.

    Can I get an opinion on the best 'Track friendly' exhaust, or modification for a Exige 430 Cup? I have a car in stock currently with the titanium option, and from what I understand (from your other videos) these are an issue with noise regs at most track days? Thanks, Ed

    I believe the key reason to buy the Ti exhaust is the weight savings. While the price isn’t cheap Ti is both expensive and very hard to weld. To me the only real world benefit of this option is bragging rights as reducing my drive time to work by 0.000001 second is difficult to quantify.

  • @lewbarrett
    @lewbarrett 6 ปีที่แล้ว

    They'll also output sound differently under load.That's perhaps due to the additional fuel and bigger bangs required to make actual motive power. But I think this test does a good anecdotal job of demonstrating the differences. I suppose a reason for variations in tone are due to the different frequencies at which the materials and their varying masses cause the systems to resonate. I'll keep the cash, thanks!

    New subscriber to your channel from Toronto Canada. I’ve been enjoying your videos tremendously. I’ve lusted after an Exige for years but they’re quite rare on the ground here and haven’t been sold here new for some time. I’m a bigger guy at 6’4” and after watching some of your vids I’m thinking an Evora might suit me better. Can I ask how tall you are?
    Also, I think the exhaust on your car sounds fuller and richer than the titanium setup and seems a bit louder to boot.
    Looking forward to more of your content!!

    I went driving with an Exige 410 sport with titanium exhaust and I myself have the Evora 400. The Exige sounded mich more aggressive but mainly because it has a lot more pops and bangs compared to my Evora. EU cars so no 3th cat like the US. Probably it also sounded more aggressive since I drove the exige without the roof, but certainly more pops and bangs 100%

    I have the former Lotus America corporate Evora GT. It has most every option except for the titanium exhaust. From what I know, the only difference is the 20 lb weight difference. The sound is basically the same. I do not think this is worth the $8,000 cost. If I want to save 20 lbs, I can always remove the useless rear seats. Now, I have added the GRP decat and cold air intake. Those changes make my great sounding machine an even greater sounding machine.

  • @sermerlin1
    @sermerlin1 2 ปีที่แล้ว

    Now I don't know if the engine is entirely the same, exhaust piping, etc but for the sake of commenting lets say only difference is the exhaust itself (same exhaust shape), stainless sounds more muffled "contained" while titanium sounds more "treble" like. Same note but with treble frequencies enhanced.
    Both do sound lovely though. Would rev either and feel like a child every time.

    Why didn´t you do a flyby noise test. It would be much more representative. And yes Lotus exhaust changes massively after they are run in. My Exige350 flyby noise was 114db 2.gear standing About 2m away (stock exhaust). Now I changed to KomoTec back box...will test soon the noise difference (it is louder for sure).

  • @0TDIedits0

    The titanium exhaust is not the sound completely the change but the weight and the heatsink of the motore that can help the function of the motore helps to maintain the motore oil will not brucia because titanium more faster to get cold like any other steel. And faster to get hotter also. That's why titanium materials specifically in the exhaust and muffler is more advantage than any materials.

  • @ozcarguy5276
    @ozcarguy5276 4 ปีที่แล้ว

    the titanium is 40% lighter compared to stainless steel; however the majority of weight (and noise reduction) in a muffler is due to the amount of fibreglass packing (or stainless steel wool packing) used in the muffler. So you could have a stainless steel muffler, with less packing (and hence lounder) than the titanium muffler. The very light titanium systems also have very little packing, and hence are very loud (usually the japanese brands). Its the muffler packing material that makes the difference to noise and weight.

    • @jimvalentine7196
      @jimvalentine7196 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      The factory stainless exhaust has ZERO packing materials.

    I always thought they tested the dB meter much closer to the exhaust pipe. When I go to the track they seem to stick the pole right behind my muffler maybe 1-2 feet away. I don't for a second believe those cars are only hitting 94-97 dB when mine is super quiet and hits about 92-94! Also, stainless sounded better but maybe because it is more run in.

      Eh, titanium is about 6-10x more expensive than stainless steel for raw materials. So that'd place the stock exhaust in the 550-950 range assuming it's stainless. Looking at replacement costs it's right on with cost of materials.

The saving is weight and bragging rights at the bar😁 but if you know who to talk to or where to look 👀 you can buy a titanium for the same price you can buy a stainless.. and a stainless for the same price as an Oem... wiki.seloc.org/a/Exhausts_-_Evora#Lotus_Sport_Stage_1_Exhaust

    James, sadly this is the first video I've seen from you where the camera work leaves me feeling a little unbalanced, almost queezy. I know it's difficult to produce such a video otherwise, but it'd have been better with someone else holding the camera or using a tripod. As for the exhausts (which is the important thing here) I'll go out on a limb and say I preferred the tone of the Ti even though I think the volume was about the same. 5.5K? Isn't that about the going price for Ti anyway? They will last much longer, I think getting on for the lifetime of the car? The sales arguments for Ti are much more than "it sounds better / louder". As an aside what decidel ratings do your two cars have? I know they're both legal as they're 'stock' and not after market options. Here in DE the Police are really keen on pulling cars off the road which have what I'll call "after market extra volume". They know what the car is rated at (db-wise), test at the roadside and if you're over then the car is immediately impounded until you get it transported to a workshop and corrected. Complete with all costs of impounding, transport, repair, new TÜV (MOT) to guarantee compliance and of course a fine. Sorry for the long post.

    • @keithwood4031
      @keithwood4031 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sure and as this was a shorter one it was OK. Back with the exhausts ...... I took the Akrapovic option on my RS and the stupid salesman tried to tell me it was Ti but no chance, it's stainless. Also interestingly the UK option price for it is 900 GBP, here in DE €1900 for the same thing. Ouch, but nice.

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wow normally we are the ones getting shafted on price. Interestingly I was told Germany does not take anywhere near as many options on its cars as we do

    • @keithwood4031
      @keithwood4031 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Interestingly I checked what I paid for mine and if I'd ordered the same spec & options in the UK the price would have been very similar. I paid a good double the UK price for the Akra, but less than half the UK price for leather interior. Swings & roundabouts. Each country decides their own 'standard' configuration and option prices. UK offers reversing camera as standard, it's an option within a package for us and pretty expensive so that's the one option I didn't include. otherwise fully loaded.

    I’m missing something with the comments. Do people go the upgrade because of perceived sound differences? I thought they’d be more important reasons for the upgrade?

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Lightness, the tip looks cool, those are the only real differences I can see. I had hoped when it was announced it was the much needed track exhaust, but it is no different to the normal system

    • @grahamkelsey6301
      @grahamkelsey6301 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JayEmm on Cars yes that’s my point to the “sounds no different what a rip-off type comments”, people going the upgrade aren’t likely to be doing it for the sound but more for the 10kg weight saving (and maybe also added status of having titanium exhaust).

    • @JayEmmOnCars
      @JayEmmOnCars  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      I suspect telling people you have a titanium exhaust is more important than it being actually lighter for most. I doubt that anyone could really tell the weight saving unless you were an incredibly skilled driver, on a race track.... where the exhaust is too loud anyway!

    • @grahamkelsey6301
      @grahamkelsey6301 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      JayEmm on Cars but as part of a complete weight saving package it’s a significant weight loss. Hey what’s the first thing we think after we purchase one of the lightest cars known.....make it lighter ;).........oh and 100% agree with the noise track day issue :(

    In terms of performance, absolutely not worth the cost. For that kind money could buy or build NA 2ZZ (or whatever engine they're using now, I guess it's a 6cylinder in the Evora) to be an all out racing engine or put one hell of a turbo system on what you have now and (with lower compression/better rods and studs, forged pistons) double your horsepower. But if you're desperate to shave off every last pound off an already featherweight car (and off your checkbook) then sure, I could see it being worth it to someone.

    Well, Cletus, I'd say the Evora is the baritone, and the Exige is the tenor. Their common ground is they are both ear shatteringly loud. Now, if you'll just hang on for a second whilst I climb up onto my soapbox, I'll continue. Noise pollution, and its concomitant increase in stress levels, is a major problem in modern society, and being deafened by thrill seekers butters no parsnips in my aural books. I do, however, love the sound of my own mixed metaphors.
    On a purely subjective level, your Evora looks and sounds much nicer than Jimmy's Exige.
    P.S. " Tiny, little boner's video "⁉️ There's absolutely no need to get personal‼️🤨🤨🤨

    • @JayEmmOnCars

      Noise pollution is an issue for sure, and I like to think I am responsible with my enjoyment of my car. It's never in loud mode late at night etc etc and I don't rev it in town like an idiot (eg. the Knightsbridge crowd).
      Living in the countryside, I find it amusing that people with loud cars get lots of stick when the reality is they disturb me for maybe 10 seconds in the day, but people have no issue when a neighbour decides to have a tree cut down at 8am on a Sunday morning.

      Cletus, I'm sure you're the very soul of probity and consideration, but you're not the only driver on the road, and, for as long as there are cacophonous exhausts, there will be individuals hellbent on others hearing them.
      The disturbance caused by the chainsaw is also due to its loud exhaust,

    Is it the entire line or just the backbox? If its the latter it really is a rip off and utterly useless. If its the former, its good value!

    Instead of pushing people to buy very expensive options (titanium, carbon), which have a quite marginal impact and require no particular engineering from Lotus, Lotus ought to dedicate proper engineering on improving the fundamentals of their cars (eg, steel tubes for the wishbones on the Elise & Exige, lousy gearboxes limiting torque, heavy and thirsty engines, chassis set-up, etc...) so that their cars perform up to the Lotus legend (not the case anymore, sadly).

      I suggest trying some of the new breed cars. Yes there are elements which can be improved, but they are far more than the sum of their parts

      I'm really not sure what 'Lotus legend' you are referring to, I'd love to know though. The modern cars are far superior in EVERY way to what came before. Sure, there are ways they could be improved but that will inevitably increase the price. There's no point making cars no one can afford to buy. The options list, is exactly that. Each buyer chooses how much extra they want to pay for their car and Lotus make additional profit out of it. Most companies need to make profit to stay in business and develop new vehicles.

      The issue is that Lotus presents as performance advancements the addition of expensive parts provided by suppliers (carbon / titanium bits) which is quite sad because none of that involves top-class Lotus engineering. We would rather have innovations and improvements through Lotus engineering, not some fancy and expensive parts provided by suppliers. They increase the price of the cars which make them quite uncompetitive for what they really are. For example, an Alpine A110 is arguably as innovative as a Lotus Elise and yet is significantly cheaper than a well-specced Elise Sprint 220 or Cup 250, both slower cars on the track according to tests performed by the press on the continent in Europe. Also, an improvement in the consistency of the set up of the cars out of Hethel would be a great plus. These are issues ad expectations well kown and shared on the continent in Europe. Perhaps the dedicated followers in the UK look at Lotus with too rosy glasses, and Lotus rewards them by selling them cars at a discount (listed prices in the UK about 15-20% less than listed prices on the continent)
