Finally, someone who has taken the time to explain X-plane setup and operations in terms for non X-plane users. As someone who has owned every version of FSX, Xplane and now Prepar3D I have never been able to play Xplane because of the differences in interfaces to that of FSX and P3D. After viewing this video I fired up X-plane 10.42 and applied your settings and for the first time ever actually completed AND enjoyed a 30 minute flight. I now look forward to extending my simming experience across 3 platforms. Please continue to add to this excellent video by way of a complete series and don't leave anything out...scenery, weather, atc, GA and airliner aircraft - the lot. Many thanks!
+Steve Southey That's great news Steve! Thanks for the good words. There is definitely a good amount of stuff I still want to do and will jot these suggestions down.
Nicely done, this type of "startup basics" video was certainly needed for all those who first started up XPlane and got slammed with all that noise and confusing setup menus. I will be sure to link this vid moving forward when people ask about first time setups and XPlane. Thanks for taking the time to lay it all out the way you did.
+Stealth Bob Appreciate the feedback, thanks Bob!
Just set my new X Plane 10 up using your video, please accept my sincere Thanks for not only a great video but taking time to help those of us that are new or having issues. Will be watching other videos you have done and subscribed Kind Regards
+MatureSimulator Very glad it helped and thanks for tuning in!
Love this guide. been using X-Plane 2 years now and still found this helpful. Would love to see a video about setting up the graphics, what each setting does AND a video about the plugins and how to set them up!?
+Philip Hewitt II Thanks for tuning in, glad it helped! Both of these are on my list after I push out a couple more videos on some recent releases. Expect something after the first of the year :).
best tutorial I've seen just getting started, I've really had an interest in this game but xplane is very hard if you are just getting started. I'm looking to find more videos from you, I would love to get into the community and online play. thank you so much
Awesome Zach, glad to hear it helped out.
Excellent video. Wish I had seen this when I was starting out with X-Plane!
+flightsim481 Thanks! I think a lot of people are in that boat, myself included :).
Same
Awesome tutorial Ty. Its simply the best one i have come across in regards to the setup of X-plane. I agree with you that this type of videos will only benefit the community and hopefully make it grow. I hope you find the time to make some more of them. Cheers :)
.
+Jan Winther Sorensen Thanks Jan! I definitely plan to do more :)
As old as this video is, and even though X-Plane 11 is coming out soon, I found it very helpful. Finally moving over to X-Plane from Prepar3D. Thanks for your help Ty!
Glad to hear it's still relevant! Thanks for tuning in.
48:05 "dislike if you don't." There are no dislikes! This is such a great tutorial!
+The Medek Thanks :)
Thank you. This is about the only place that gives an example of how to configure a joystick
Glad I could help!
This video is amazeballs! I'm a P3D guy.....but have always been intrigued by xplane. When the ixeg 737cl was released, I decided to add xp to my repertoire. At first I was a little worried about the learning curve associated with a new sim, but this video crushed any fears I had. And made it a breeze to get started. I'm now cruising at FL350 and loving every minute of it. Thank you thank you for your help in making that happen! Now....if only I had a list of "must have" addons for xp. Care to opine?
+Lazy Bastard I'm incredibly happy that it's helped you and others get set up in the sim. Welcome to the dark side. I'll be working on a video to address the addon question, hopefully out by this weekend. The long and short is that it depends based on what you want to accomplish. The nice thing about XPX is that there are no packages that feel mandatory like you would find in FSX
Hi At last a video (Very well done) that is a help. Well explained and allowed me after several years of trying to start to set up Xplane Now all I need is a video starting from the beginning on Installing Aircraft and Scenery and Where to install themCheers Mike from Scotland
That's something I want to do soon. Glad it helped, Mike!
Awesome video. Thank you for taking the time to make it. Definitely helped me in setting up x-plane!
+Bill Russell Thanks Bill, glad it helped you :)
Thank you SO much for this video. I have installed and uninstalled X-plane so many times as I was always disappointed with its look and feel but wanted to give it another try. Your video will make me stick with X-plane longer if not indefinitely.
+FlamingP1stons Awesome to hear that!
Great video Thank you, this is one of the best videos for describing how to setup x-plane button adjustments.Maybe you could make another video on other x-plane key functions, data inputs & outputs, etc. this would help quite a few people with the x-plane setup.
+Dave Bye Thanks for the feedback, glad it helped Dave!
Hey Cat, I am gonna link to this video in my next one (this Monday). I think people could learn a LOT from this!
Awesome Mr. Geode, thanks and glad you found some use out of it!
Thx for a very good video on setting Joystick buttons views etc. I hadnt thought of the ways you set up views w num pad but it really makes sense so thanks for the help
Thanks for watching, Rand! Glad it was useful for you.
Thank-you. I wish I had this video when I first purchased XP.......I think the set up is what turns most people off of XP. Well done.
+Jack Flash Thanks Jack! I'm in the same boat, had a ton of trouble getting this all set up initially.
Thanks so much for this cat i found x planes interface very confusing and your video has taught me every thing i need to know, thanks again mate.
+Michael Baptist Awesome Michael! Thanks for watching and commenting :)
Been having a lot of issues and this video help me a lot
Thanks!! Now I need to figured out how to make my saitek panels work
Glad to hear! There is a plugin that you can find at x-plane.org and a pretty healthy community of people using those panels.
Good stuff. I certainly learned some new things. Thanks for taking the trouble.
Awesome, thanks for watching Brian
Top notch. I'm looking forward to my first flight. Purchased to practice instrument approaches. Thank you for your work!
Thanks for tuning in! Welcome aboard :)
I saw the window view and how you set up the hotkeys, thank you so much man.
Awesome, glad it helped :)
catstrator Man are you waiting for the full release of X-Plane 11? You gonna be making vids of 11 right?
Great video and good timing as I just bought an X55 rhino.
+jimbow501 You have a secret stalker. Don't tell anyone!
Awesome, long time flyier and still learned lots of stuff.
Awesome! Glad to hear it helped :).
Excellent, you really helped me out with the cam settings! :-) Great tutorial!
+Tim Koster Awesome Tim! Thanks for tuning in!
Still such an important video to take away the "fear" of getting in touch with the (partly) quite weird settings of X-Plane.
Awesome, glad it helped Markus. Thanks for watching :)
wow ...what can i say thanks a million for a truly great tutorial really useful you truly saved the day
+mdaydj Woohoo! You're welcome, thanks for tuning in.
Cool thing to dive in to. Made my life and flying X plane a lot easier.
Great to hear, Albert! Welcome aboard :)
All i can say is thanks Ty, from one Masshole to another LOL !!! I was originally with Fsx, you've persuaded me to try X-plane wish me luck !!! P
+Paul Mattson Woohoo! Hope you enjoy it. I'm a transplanted masshole, I like to think I'm still a Midwesterner at heart ;).
Holy Cat Lips, nice Vid. I'm switching to Xplane!
+MrGibbs31 lol
Thanks for this. I'm currently downloading X-Plane 10 as we speak, so will use this. Also thanks for heads up with the discounted steam version on sale.
Awesome! Welcome aboard
Thanks.
Just need to get it up and running and learn to fly routes close to how you do it . :-)
after several years of FS2004, FSX and P3D I am now buying x-plane ( I blame I-XEG ) :p thanks for the very helpfull video
+TheBadameco Bwhaha! Glad I could help :)
Great video my friend any plans to do the other tutorials i.e. graphic settings etc you mentioned that you were hoping to do? :-)
+Mr FairyCake Still on my list, just gotta find some time. A graphics setup video is likely to take a long time to put together.
Amazing video! Thanks for doing this.. I have learned a ton of new tricks... pity the autopilot toggle does not work in the airfoil 172 :( I have a Saitek yoke and I will be doing a ton of programming based on your video. Keeping your hands off the keyboard and mouse as much as possible will be very welcome change. I wonder if somewhere deep the button setup I can find the link to the GPS large + and small + on the dials, I hate this gps! haha.
+Jon Fly I'm pretty sure there are commands for those GPS dials somewhere as there are 3D versions of the GPS in most planes. Not sure what they would be, check the Org's forums for sure.
Well done I packed my X-plane away after spending £200 on payware plane. on a £1000 games PC. reinstalled last night and Now watching your great Vid, thank you, the plane I bought A320 you need a degree in programming..lol
Thanks, I was about to give up on this sim!
You're welcome!
This is so freaking helpful, you have no idea! 😂
+Colin Boone That's good to hear, glad it helped! :)
Absolutely wonderful intro to the machinations of X-Plane!!!
Do the key bindings in XP 10 migrate over to the key binding is an XP 11; and if so what is the name of the file?
Thanks,
Chas
Thanks for watching! I believe the bindings are stored in a file in output/preferences. They should translate over.
Been wanting to get back into Flight Sims after many years of absence (I haven't really flown much since going to a Mac in 2005), so this is an amazing guide to getting things set up properly in X-Plane, especially mapping the autopilot and mixture controls. One of the biggest headaches is trying to fly and having to hold everything steady while I engage the autopilot or the various settings, and also adjust the prop and mixture controls. As it happens I ordered an X52 a few days ago, so I'm hoping to be able to recreate much of your configuration there.
I'm a long way from being skilled enough to do PilotEdge, but I'm curious if there are any packages to fill the skies with real world aircraft like the old FSTraffic or whatever did.
+Kenneth Pardue Hey Kenneth! I'm always going to advocate flying online, however I do understand that not everyone may be ready for it. Aside from PE, you can look into something like IVAO/VATSIM for a PE-Like experience or even FSCloud for a much more casual environment.
For offline plane, there is an addon called World Traffic 2 that recently came out which looks like it may fill the skies quite nicely. I have a review copy of this and plan to do a video soon, but as of now I have not had a chance to use it.
The X-52 should serve your needs nicely. I had one before I got my X-55 and was able to find places to map both prop and mixture without any problems. A very nice setup for sure. I migrated to the X-55 primarily because I wanted more binds and dual throttles.
Thanks for tuning in!
+catstrator Thanks, I'll look for your video on World Traffic when you get to it.
I very much enjoyed your live stream of the vFlyteAir SR-20. I prefer low and slow, and the Cirrus is an awesome plane that I happened to buy just before your vid. Definitely following your streams, thanks for the great stuff!
awesome job man!
Thanks!
thanks men, I really apreciate it.
You're very welcome!
It can pretty damned cold in the wheel well.
Great setup video!!! Is there any way to save the different views you setup when changing to a different version. JARDesign has been updating the A320 and I have to recalibrate my views every time. A real PITA if you know what I mean.
+John Navara Thanks John!
In the A320 folder is a file called "a320neo_prefs.txt"; every plane has a similarly named file. Copy this file to the root folder of the new version of the plane and you'll have all of your views transferred.
Thank you for the demo on how to get started. Can you recommend where to get a complete system to run X-plane with high frame rates? I've seen chillblast but not too crazy about buying overseas. Any suggestions greatly appreciated.
+James Cuellar Anything with a fast processor (I7/I5) and a good GPU will do you well. You can find systems on amazon, newegg, and all over the net.
Thanks for these tips!
+Derk Weijers Absolutely, thanks for tuning in!
+catstrator Always! As soon as I'm able to watch one of your streams live (you almost always go live when I'm asleep - I live in The Netherlands) I will buy you a beer. Keep up the great work, I really enjoy it!
Hi Cat,
Great Video !! I have been working with X-plane for a while and you are right, its a bit arcane. 2 questions. Is there a way to bring the view up higher in the cockpit to see over the nose? Like raising your seat up in a car. And how do you make an axis less responsive? Especially while taxiing, the rudder pedals are very sensitive and my movements tend to magnify as I try to taxi the plane. Not so much while flying.
Thanks and keep up the great work. I really learned alot.
Grybeard
+grybeard1 Hey Joe! View: use the arrow key up to move your camera up and then set the view to one of your quick views using control + keypad number. Axis- Set up a response curve in joystick & settings > nullzone. The three sliders in the top left set will set a curve that makes the stick/pedals less sensitive from the get-go.
+catstrator And thanks for tuning in :)
do you know when your started the video on the steam page and you had two of those free scenery packs downloaded how do I do that because I have x plane 10 on steam edition but those scenery packs just say "not downloaded"
Check them off and they will download.
I fly many different aircraft. Any way to make the bindings A/C specific? Seems there would be conflicts between some controls. How do you go from an MU-2 to a 152?
Thanks for your great videos. - PT
+PT Johnson Check out the plugin X-Assign
Awesome!!! Thank You a lot for that video!!!
You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
HI, GREAT THE VIDEO FOR STARTING NEW X-PLANE, WHAT COMPUTER SYSTEM USED FOR THE SIMULATOR I LOVE THE GRAFIC, TNKS BRO
+Jhonny Neyra FANTASTIC I USE AN I7 4790K, GTX770 4GB, 16GB RAM
Hey Cat! Very useful video! One thing I have wrong with my sim though is hoe to setup Hotkeys for views... When I do CTRL+1 for example it doesnt save the view I just made. Any help?
Make sure you're using the numpad.
Numpad is enabled but still nothing
Hey catstrator, amazing video! Question for you, how do you have your fps so high?
+Blaine Hathaway Meticulous tweaking. Expect a video on that soon.
Great video. Was curious, is there a reason you don't use an actual yoke as opposed to the X-55?
+Spencer Maze I don't see a need for one. They take up more desk space and in general have a worse reputation than sticks.
+catstrator Gotcha. Thx for the reply 👍
excellent guide ✈️ I love flying and just buy X plane 10 but need help setting it up
question can I use the sim on a I mac and how can I use 3 monitors
I will try to set it this weekend 👀👀
X-Plane does run on Mac. I'm not sure how to span multi-monitors.
Thanks so much Ty! What computer setup are you using?
+The Medek I7 4790k, GTX770 4GB, 16gb RAM
Your twitch channel shows that your CPU is overclocked. Have you ever compared OC vs non-OC fps? If so, what is the delta fps with your rendering settings?
+memorycl I've never made the comparison. I would anticipate them to be lower, but it would be largely dependent on where I'm flying and in what plane. Most of the time I'm limited by GPU.
+catstrator Interesting...well, for one data point, I'm running a 4770 and gigabyte gtx770, both stock. I followed your intro video and get ~20-25 fps before switching to the baron. Looks like I need to get a 4790K.
I always refer to this vid when I need help cat. thankyou! but what is your computer so I can compare mine to yours please. Thanks
I7 4790K @ 4.7ghz, AMD RX480, 32GB ram
catstrator thankyou
THANK YOU VERY HELPFUL!!
YOU'RE WELCOME
How do you disable the crosshair for mouse flying. I have a joystick and that gets in the way when flying.
It's in the rendering options if I recall.
What type of hardware platform are you running this on and what video card are you using? Just curious
Core I7 4790k @ 4.8ghz, GTX770, 16gb RAM
I just realized that you have the steam version, what are the differences?
+Mr. Noob _ I don't get access to the non RC betas. That's about it, really.
+catstrator oh, thanks for info
I am still trying to figure out how to move the seat up vertically--i can move it left and right but not up and down
up and down default to arrow up and arrow down
Have you heard anything about AI traffic? I might be moving away from this sim if they dont. I am very dissapointed they havent implemented this
Im on a laptop without NUM pad, cant fixate my viewpoints. Any ideas on how to create custom bindings? Thanks
+blankplanet Look for the View: 3-D Cockpit Location bindings
I cant open the links could you put it in a different way?
I was a fax user ,,, thank you for this tutorial , I learned so much ,,,, thank you ,,,,,,, thank you
+david heaslip Awesome, glad the video helped!
Brilliant many thanks :)
+RichieD Gaming You're welcome! Thanks for watching.
How do i find the Transition's for the airports?
It will be on the charts. Varies by country.
Can this be a stand alone sim with-out flying on line? Thanks
+Jon Martinez It's only online if you install the software. By default you're offline, as I was in this video.
+catstrator Can the ATC be speeded up? Thanks I'm downloading 10.45 from steam now.
Been using X-Plane 10.45r2 just fine for 7 months. Today I utilized a TH-cam by "catstrator" on setting up various X-Plane parameters. Some were regarding visual specs and - like him - I chose the highest possible settings…it immediately crashed then, and since then only crashes on each attempted startup. How do I get past the crash to reset factory settings, and get back to flying?
Catstrator probably has a much meatier, newer computer than me, and probably not a Mac.
Mac Pro 10.7.5 - 2x2.8 GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon - 14 GB 800 MHz DDR2 FB-DIMM -
NVIDIA GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB
x-plane 10 mac
What?
There is a config file in output/preferences that you can delete. Might have most luck posting on x-plane.org if you can't figure it out.
hey.... logitech extreme 3d or Thrustmaster T.Flight Stick X ??
+Nechifor Marius I don't have any opinions on those sticks. I use an X-55 by Saitek.
thanks!
Do you prefer NavDataPro or Navigraph?
+Jack Flash I personally use Navigraph. I have never used NavDataPro so I can't make a comparison.
I currently use FSX, its laggy as hell and im considering changing to x plane, is it worth`?
Runs better for me. Download the demo and give it a shot. It's running the same game engine.
If you ever want somone to fly with you in X-plane let me know!
Thx very much
Thanks for tuning in, David.
I quite like to set up a nose wheel camera
+Robert Langford You should be able to do this so long as a plane doesn't lock you into the cockpit/fuselage.
+catstrator is there any big graphic difference between 32 and 64 bit (i bought32 bit by accident). thanks
Do you have P3D? I manage to get double the fps with higher settings and WAY more eye candy in P3D at 4k resolution and max settings.
I only run X-Plane.
I said...urgh turn off any AA because you have 4k. put the water reflections to second highest and cloud detail to zero (if you have skymaxx pro) otherwise 65.
.
What's your PC specs (like CPU and GPU)?
Cheers, Muffen.
+PilotPrayer i7 4790k @ 4.8ghz, GTX770 4gb, 16gb ram
+catstrator Have you run with the i7 at stock clocks at all? I'm debating upping my i5 to a 4790k or a Skylake i7, but I don't have the capacity to OC something like that unless I drop the $200 or so on a motherboard and new cooler.
The stock 4790k will boost itself up to 4.4ghz. That will still give you very respectable performance.
hi do mind do a tutorial about xfmc ? tks @catstrator
+wang xinjie I'll put that on the stack of tutorials :). There are quite a few of them out there already, for what it's worth. A while back I did a livestream in the FJS Q400 where I used X-FMC... I would say check that out if you're just looking for flows and what-not.
How can you start at a gate or parking spot?
he explains in the video
Thanks I can start in a gate but can't back out of it.....
ok thanks for the update. I've also noticed some of the planes taxing are on the runway facing me so I'll reinstall and try again.
I dont see any AI traffic at all in Xplane 11. Any word on this?
Dude, you sound like Jeff Favigano
Thanks I suppose. Jeff helped me with my audio setup, so I'm not necessarily surprised.
The view set thing is not working for me. Any suggestions?
Make sure you're in "3D cockpit with command mode".
yeh, I was using the numbers at the top of the keyboard not the numpad, all sorted now thanks
And what is the "steam" version? Why is there such a thing?
Steam version is for sale on Steam, another content delivery platform.
what computer do you have , pleasss tell me!!!!
I7 4790k, GTX770 4gb
In my joystick tab and equipment area why do I only get 4 axis. If anyone could tell me that would be great.
cause you bought a cheap one
Cuz ur joystick only has 4 axis?
Hi I just found out how to start at a gate. Thanks
+Jon Martinez How do you do this?
Every time my system freezes up it automatically puts me in the X15 how can I stop that? Thanks
No idea, I'd reach out to Laminar for help.
mine goes straight to a 747 , its so confusing
Noooo, I was gonna do this video
+LegitAircraft :(
Does a Speedlink Black Widow joy stick work. Someone pls respond.
It should. Grab the demo and try for yourself.
How come Trackir don't work with X plane.. Anything I need to set up?
+JumboBumper Check out the addon called X-Camera. This is what most of us use to get TrackIR functioning well.
Would it have killed them to put the list of buttons in the joystick and equipment menu in alphabetical order?
X-Plane 11 will have a much better interface. For now, we get this abomination :(. Good thing is that once it's up it's up.
Just bought X-plane 10, when is X-plane 11 coming?
Catstrator... still on 10.36?
+Dekel Amrani Nope, running 10.41 currently.
+catstrator the rendering screenshot you attached are from 10.36...
+Dekel Amrani Aside from running Extended DSF my rendering settings haven't changed. I'll see about updating that later.
+catstrator thanks. what about skymax pro v3.. i noticed you are not using it? still with the default xp clouds? and do you use any weather engine outside of xp? sorry for all the questions.. love you vids very well made and explained. 😃
+Dekel Amrani Thanks for the feedback :). Not using Skymaxx V3 and do not plan to. I used v1/2 and had a great deal of problems with it from a performance standpoint. Based on what I've seen from others, those issues have not been corrected.
Anybody hear anything about AI traffic being added to this sim? If there is can someone please show me how to implement this. Sure would be nice. If MS Flight sim and every other sim can have it I dont see why they cant.
AI traffic exists already, but it's not great.
help I've just bought this and if feels like I'm doing an exam for nasa
It can be complicated, but once you learn it because super rewarding.
It doesn't let me lock my views with the ctrl button and a numpad key
Just got a new set up, and the views aren't working, any reason why if you know?
+Colin Boone I would have no idea. Make sure numlock is on.
+catstrator there you go 😂 thanks man! I was doing a flight last night in the Carenado B1900, and I was trying to so hard to set my views but then just gave up because it comes with it's own views which are the views I was going to have set anyways. It all worked out, but when ATC contacted me while I was trying to set up a wing view, it got tough, haha, anyways, thanks again :)
I just bought it x p 10 upgradable xp 11 hope it is worthy and hope it comes as GLOBAL version x p10
First roll comment!
+MrGibbs31 Alabama fan?
