- In this interview, Ellen McLain (voice of GLaDOS and other well known characters) talks about the development of Portal 2, her life as a voice actor, and some tips on how to get into voice acting yourself!

Fantastic stuff! This was really interesting to listen to. I feel that the beta stuff covered through leftover game files etc. gives a glimpse into more of the programming and design side, but hearing the perspective of a voice actor gives a completely original view of a game's development that is even more rarely seen than what you already do.
Team fortress or Overwatch? But tf2 came first since 08, she had to do Team fortress first? How? Time? Logic???

She wasn't in Blizzard's Overwatch. She played a character called Overwatch in Half-Life 2.

@@weenie7746 I could never make out what the voice said a lot of the time over the other game sounds, and the captions weren't really any help. I was able to hear some stuff about suppressing rebels or something but would like to see a full transcript, especially on Half Life 2: Episode 2 when Alyx is talking as soon as the voice starts and a helicopter or something is heard outside.

I've actually met her in person completely randomly. I went to a college for game programming which was located next to place that was used for theater practice and she was there auditioning for something and we ran it to each other while me and a few friends were talking about games. She join the conversation after asking our favorite games, mine is Portal and she said that she was GLaDOS. She's really nice and humble.

That was obvious. Who even thought that Portal 3 was coming when they said that Portal story ends on Portal 2. Maybe some spin off far in the future but there won't be a Portal game in a while unless they have something innovative and new.
Maybe a prequel? Taking a shot in the dirt here.... Portal .5? Portal..... i got nothing...

This was a great interview! Personally, I played Portal 2 first and then Portal. After I played the first Portal the rest of the story made so much more sense. This interview answered many of my questions. Thanks!

Dude, if you are thinking of making a Portal 2 episode of Beta64, I'd be willing to help provide information.
I may not be an employee at Valve, but I know *most* about Portal 2's development; from the Directed Design Experiments to the Alternate Endings (and the unused Ending where Chell speaks), from the first year of F-Stop to the last two of Portal 2, from the unused "sp_a4_finale4_pc" (an unused track that is never heard anywhere in the final boss battle) to the cut Hover Turret (though, technically, it was just the Portal Curiosity Core attached to the ceiling via rope).
If you want a walking dictionary about *most* of Portal 2's development, according to what the public knows, I'm your go-to guy.
...although, if you want to do the research yourself, I know some great sources, like "The Final Hours of Portal 2", the GDC "Portal 2 Post Mortem" video, the "Combine Overwiki", etc.
But again, only if you're thinking about making a Portal 2 episode of Beta64.

VNN already did EVERYTHING EVER on Portal 1's beta.
F-Stop actually had no portals; instead, they had what was apparently a groundbreaking mechanic named 'f-stop'. The player was named Mel and carried a camera. Mel would go through the 80s styled test chambers with everything from Portal 1 redesigned to fit a much more cartoonish art-style.The GLaDOS of F-STOP Portal 2 was Cave Johnson. His mind was put into a robot, and he talked to you while you went through the test-chambers. Eventually, he teamed up with the mannequins, the turrets of F-Stop, to turn on mankind.
Unfortunately, I don't know a lot about Portal 1's development (other than how development began with the game 'Narbacular Drop', any information provided by the in-game developer commentary, and whatever I can find by digging through Portal's files).
Really, the only other info I have that is slightly (but probably not) related to Portal, is a section of "The Final Hours of Portal 2" which explains how Jeep Barnett, Kim Swift, all the people who made 'Narbacular Drop' met on their first day at Digi-pen.

She's a very fan-loving person, to a level unmatched by most voice actors. There's a Portal 2 mod/project called the Gary Hudston project and she provided new voice lines, free of charge.

She seems so sweet, which is quite different coming from GlaDOS. I finally got a copy of Portal 2 and finished it. It was so good. A different feel from the first game, but still excellent.

This video was fantastic thanks so much for this Beta64 portal 1 & 2 are some of my favourite games of all time i watched this intre video and loved every moment of it and i loved to hear Ellens great personalty and she was very different from what i expected as a person and it adds sooo much more depth to Glados as a character and makes me gain tones of more respect for Ellen. definitely one of my favourite Va's of all time

Not really, she has to also put on a voice rather than doing her normal one to make her have the attitude of glados. Trust me, even if we edit it so she has the same voice effects, they wouldn't sound the same.
Just get melodyne and a wacom tablet and start bending the pitch to absurd heights.
You probably can. You'll need Melodyne for that:
1 - Load the voice clip of choice
2 - Remove all pitch variations from the voice
3 - Take the voice formants and drag them 1 1/2 steps higher than the pitch of the voice
That should give you a good ballpark to work on.

I really enjoyed this! Maybe you could interview other game voice actors... Voice acting is one of my favourite aspects of game development!
Those two artists types that Ellen said, the interpreter and the creator, are very important to understand. Every artist work on their own abilities, and the perfect combination between both of them is what give us master pieces, not just in games but in other different careers too.
As a classical musician, I understand and appreciate every word from this great and talented woman. This interview was very enjoyable and unique. I give thanks to Beta64 for share with us this and congratulate him for the effort.

Yep, Overwatch in Half Life 2 was the first video game character she voiced. Half Life 2 was initially released on 16 November 2004, and both Team Fortress 2 and the original Portal were initially released on the same date (10 October 2007).
Wow, thank you both for this wonderful interview. It was fantastic and very interesting to listen to. You did a great job leading it as well. And of course, props to Ellen McLain, what a charming and wise lady. I'm thrilled.

Unbelievable how delightful she is. I could listen to her for hours on end, just talk about her life in extensive detail. It's rare to encounter an elderly person who ACTUALLY has something fascinating to talk about.

*deeply amused by the fact the voice behind GLaDOS is a technophobe and has only watched her husband and friend play the actual games* XD This was interesting stuff, though! It is cool to hear a little more behind the scenes stuff on the voice acting front, and consider what might have been. (Portal prequel. . .what would that look like?) Though I have to admit, it's a bit weird to hear her voice WITHOUT the robotic overlays and whatnot. :P

At first glance, you may think the turrets sound like baby GLaDOS, because on the editor that Valve used to modify Ellen McLain's voice for GLaDOS, they moved the formant up much higher than they did for GLaDOS. This also applies to the curiosity core, which was also voiced by Ellen McLain. But for the intelligence core, which again was also voiced by Ellen McLain, they slowed down the beta cake recipe files 20%.
