I'm indonesian, and despite all the controversy surrounding the film, i'm so proud that this film make the world more aware of my countries early political condition.

If you liked this film, you will LOVE "The Quiet American" with Michael Caine killing it as a British journalist in Vietnam as the U.S. is about to become involved. As a former foreign correspondent, this is what the job about.

Yes. Very good movie and even better book. Similar to Living Dangerously but I think it doesn't get into the soul of Vietnam the way Living does with Indo, or at least Jakarta.

It's unfortunate cinemagoers no longer demand story-driven films. Perhaps they no longer have the needed understanding of the history of even their own times. They just want to be entertained instead of engaged.

This movie was made when Gibson and Weaver were peaking in their looks. They look absolutely gorgeous in this film. The romantic story and incendiary political setting helped prop all of it up.

Yes, but 2 very good actors. Their acting enhances their looks, plus they had great chemistry. Drama with romance. He chased her, pursued her, his attraction so obvious, to the audience. She was worth every bit of his attention. Great film. Linda Hunt, though, her character is the heart of the film.

I saw this at the movies here in Sweden 42 years ago. It's amazing. I've seen it twice more since and learned that the outdoor scenes - just like 'Apocalypse Now' were shot in the Philippines (the studio takes were shot in two different studios in Oz), and they even speak Tagalog in the movie. Now, I was married to a Filipina (1995-2014) from San Antonio, just north of Olongapo in Zambales - she used to work (menial jobs like doing the laundry, serving in the GI mess and empting the slot machines...) for the Americans at both Clark Air Base and Subic (where there was a Swedish resto called "Johansson" in 1999), and for a short period at some radar station at home in SA, but wanted more. The family had earned the right to emigrate to the US (she has relatives in San Diego and Montreal, Canada) already in the 80s, but her mother was too scared to fly so it never happened, much to her chagrin. So in 1990 she left for Aberdeen, Hong Kong Island (where I met her) like so many others, and within a year her father died from gangreen after the Mt. Pinatubo eruption in June '91. All roads in Zambales and Pampanga were full of 3-4 meters (!) of ashes or lahar (actually an Indonesian word, not Filipino as I thought until 2 years ago...), so he couldn't get the antibiotics needed. Also, the hour-and-a-half flight to HK was impossible due to no visibility, so she couldn't even attend his funeral. The following year her mother died from a heart attack. Tough luck. Anyway, she stayed in HK for 5 years before arriving here in Sweden in Nov. 1995. Yada, yada, yada...
Now, I have been to Phils. five times 1995-2016, so I know the place quite well, and have visited many islands (Boracay, Panglao, Malapascua and Puerto Galera (Mindoro) for SCUBA diving, relaxation and watching the cultural/historical sites and WWII memorials etc. Anything from the Banaue rice terraces to those fake "bronze" statues at the "Battle of the Bulge' site (on the beach, in the water) on Leyte (the Americans took the real ones with them after Pinatubo...), San Juanaco Bridge and so on. I still wish to go back, to places I haven't been. Mainly the northern tip of Palawan and CdO and the rest of Mindanao. So. The question here is - do you know exactly WHERE the movie was shot? It only says "Philippines" at IMDb, and on Wikipedia it says it was shot in Manila (Ermita?) and Banaue (!), which I don't remember (I haven't seen it in 20 years though). Maybe you know more?

Truly memorable, the intro with that music, his arrival, the nighttime, the "What have I gotten myself into?"
      feeling he conveyed.
The attraction he felt for Jillian, instantly. I loved how he could not hide his feelings for her. I LOVED how he chased her, making her laugh, getting her to let her guard down, at the same time he is so attracted and taken by her smarts and beauty. Her fighting it too.
The soundtrack supports their story, and Billy's story. Just a wonderful film. I saw it in theatre, then introduced it to my 22 year daughter years later. She just loved it. When Mel is digging in his closet for his suit to wear to the party invite, "Mom, is any red blooded woman going to care if his clothes are wrinkled? " We agreed, no films are made like this. The romance, the drama, the tragedy.

Mel Gibson was more handsome and a better actor than Chris Hemsworth will ever be. Plus, Mel is an outstanding director.

tom thompson Her mother was the English actress Elizabeth Inglis.
Sigourney Weaver therefore is half English. I am also half English with my other half being Welsh, but a full Brit nonetheless.
Sigourney Weaver infact has a rather blue blooded ancestry. Her 21st grandfather was the medieval English king, Edward II and she is also directly descended from Henry V of England aswell as being a 9th cousin (6 times removed) of the ill fated wife and queen of Henry VIII - Anne Boleyn. She also shares an ancestry with the late Diana, Princess of Wales, Sarah Ferguson and is the 14th cousin of the present monarch here in the UK - Elizabeth II. Sigourney also has such famous kin as George Washington and Gerald Ford aswell as being distant cousins to Marilyn Monroe, Clint Eastwood and Tom Hanks to name but a few.
A wonderful and magnetic actress with a fabulous charisma.
People may exclaim "Wow!" when they learn of her royal ancestry and the fact that she is the 14th cousin to HM the queen, but it is impossible to quantify just how distant in terms of kinship, 14th cousin really is.
Basically, to be a 14th cousin, Sigourney Weaver would have a common ancestor with the queen around the 13th century and in her case, their shared ancestor was Edward II.
Especially here in the UK, it is absolutely the norm to discover that most of us have a connection to a medieval king. Scientists have discovered that most Brits and millions more worldwide are directly descended from Edward I.
My surname is Tudor and my distant ancestor was Owen Tudor, a Welsh nobleman and courtier who was the grandfather of the first Tudor monarch Henry VII (the father of Henry VIII).
I urge everybody to research their genealogy as you may be surprised as to what you'll find.
      Chris (UK).

Is it worth seeing? From this trailer it looks like a romantic romp between two westerners with these horrific historic events as a mere backdrop.

This is the Indonesian rebellion, the rebellion is called the Indonesian communist party, this is an insult, 7 army generals died because of the ICP (Indonesian communist party) and that party was not successful in revolutionizing Indonesia.
