I just did this in my 2011 honda fit sport. My dad helped me and we lowered it 3 inches (still had more than 10 inches of storage underneath), widened it to 39.5 inches, and ended up notching the corners by the trunk to allow it to fit better against the hatch. A full 3 inch foam mattress topper fit almost perfectly (cut the length a few inches and had to notch the corners by the hatch). I am 5'7" and fit comfortably (length ended up being 70 inches). I am so excited to try it out! Thanks for sharing.
Thanks, Ben! Best video about this topic on TH-cam. Love the simple, no fuss style. Just got all our materials to build it out for our cross-country adventure. Thank you so much! Awesome.
Aw man, I've watched sooo many Honda Fit build out videos and this is by far my favorite. Simple enough that I could even build it, and super effective. Nice. Thanks so much for sharing!
Great! Much more simple than many of the other self made units having drawers nooks and crannies. Well thought out! Provding room for gear storage underneath accessed by both side doors and lift gate!
Just a great video as the simplicity means it's easier to follow and build.. Plus there's space underneath.... Thinking off buying a fit or jazz as we call them in the UK. Thanks Ben 👍😊
This is an awesome design! Thanks a bunch for the video. I've been considering selling my CRV and getting a Honda Fit, mostly due to these insane gas prices but also in part to my CRV getting up there in mileage. I slept in the back of the CRV for a long time and really loved it. The space sacrifice will be a bummer but I'm a minimalist anyway! Again this is a wonderful design and I love that it's modular. Well done, and thank you for posting and sharing with us! Cheers!
I built this platform for my Fit, I made my plywood 40” and lowered it 6” to allow easier access to the bed ( though it left me less storage space it was necessary. 👍👍🎩
I’ve. A honda jazz(fit) 2009 model and I do overlanding with an inflated bed since last 6 months.. It’s very easy to deflate and occupy a tiny place in my car
If you don’t mind a shorter bed you can do that. When you lower the bed it shortens the distance to the back of the seat. I’m 6’1” and I wouldn’t fit if it were any lower.
Being shorter I just sleep on the flattened bed with the seats folded down. This gives me the ability to sit up in bed. Don't think I could tolerate having ceiling so close. How do you get in and out?
Okay, I've slept a few different ways on road trips in my Honda fit, and while I love it it's pretty uncomfortable for anyone over like 5'5" in back or any sleeper mode the seats fold into. Didn't think a platform would work but would love a way to make it sleep 2 with camp gear and supplies. About how much headroom do you have with that foam? (And how thick is the foam, looks like it must be at least 4inches?) How comfortable/difficult was this for you sleeping and getting in and out of the car from the platform? Hoping I have some more room to play with in a 2015 but still want to fit a cooler under the platform 😬
Thanks! Yeah it’s 4” foam and there’s probably about 2’ of space - the bed is about the same height as the base of the windows. You have to remove the headboard extension to drive, but it only takes about 20 seconds once you get the hang of it to be off and driving again. It’s what’s needed to get us tall folks enough length!
thanks for the video!! about how many inches is the inlet/outlet that allows more room for your feet? im only 5'9" but it looks like that allows the plywood to snug in there real nicely.
How tall are you in centimeters? It is possible to sleep the other way for you? It would feel more natural for me sleeping in that direction. I am 176 cm.
Have you actually taken a trip, with clothing & supplies for 2, plus camping & cooking gear, and used this? I’m guessing no? Picture yourselves coming back from a hike with muddy boots and wet clothes. How do you get from there, to inside a warm sleeping bag, in the rain?
@@bentimby, An RV with a shower would be nice at times, but I don’t want to buy the gas for it, and it can’t go where I go with my 09 Fit. Mostly jeep & dual sport motorcycle country. Just myself @ 5’9”, and tiny dog, so I get by sleeping on one side with gear on the other. Rear seats totally removed so I gain space for an extra spare tire, and keep the other footwell open to floor so I can climb in rear driver side door, pivot, and sit upright on bed which is just plywood at floor level. I understand, nothing I do works for 2 people so something has to change. A raised platform seems to be the answer for many, but I always wonder if there isn’t some awkward time spent converting from driving to camping mode & getting in & out? especially cross country at a rest stop or Walmart. I still spend 2 minutes opening / closing doors re-positioning things for camper mode, or getting set to take off. I was just wondering how that works for you? Most “build” videos never go there. If Honda built an off road capable cargo van on the HRV chassis I would get in line for one. The Fit on Jeep trails means a lot of dodging rocks & ruts those guys just roll over.
Hey, I love this. Some questions: 1) I have a 2012 Honda Fit. Do you think I can copy your measurements without measuring my 2012 fit? 2) I want my gear to slide out super effortlessly. Do you recommend storing in Rubbermaids? How many Rubbermaids could fit? Could a cooler fit under? 3) Do you store the memory foam in the house? 4) Do you wish it was lower? Are you too close to the ceiling? 5) If you redesigned what would you do different? 6) Got any footage with storage loaded up? Thanks so much! Haha sorry!
This is fabulous. We have the same year Fit. Yes, it's old, but we keep it because it's our "truck" and it's always nice to have a second car. Do you use it often for camping/travel? Do you have any other hints for use? I love that it is higher because it gives you all that storage space so that you can camp more easily.

Adding to "watch later" with the other spring projects. Thanks for the reassuring comment 🤜

Dude.
Genius.
Patent the design pronto!
The best part is the chipmunks 🐿️. 😀👌
Excellent ben... can easily lay down and easily remove
Nice video. You're the first person that I've seen to do triangulation, good for you! That's a high platform, lots of storage. Safe Travels!
I built this platform for my Fit, I made my plywood 40” and lowered it 6” to allow easier access to the bed ( though it left me less storage space it was necessary. 👍👍🎩
Awesome, good call!
cool idea, I don't have a honda fit but I may consider doing something like this for my small SUV
Love it! Might use it in my 2005 cr-v. Thank you!

Height of the platform leaves very little headroom. Pls reduce the height

@@bentimby Yes You are absolutely right
Thanks for your video, easy n nice to built , I’m 6’3” is it enough space for someone like me ?
It will be tight but I think so, especially if you build that extra lip between the seats :)
Hi i basically laid each piece down and lag bolted them together , then laid plywood on top, more vertical room and easier
I'm curious, with your design, why didn't you utilize the front seat passenger doors ability to lie flat? Really love it I want to make one myself
I want to do this but also take the seats out. Ive never used them. Not once.
Thanks for the video, nice n easy build ,
Nice job!
I like the Idea, Thanks for sharing
Hey This is awesome! Love How simple it is. Just one question. How comfortable is it To sleep in There? Are You Able To sit upright on the bed?

Hey Ben nice job ! I will copy this it breaks down nicely

Hi is it possible that you could write the measurements I have a 2013 and I really like this platform i just going to make a little lower
This is SICK.
Great build! Do you think you could have used 2x3’s ?
Can’t say, might be a little on the light side though…
Hi, would it be possible to get a “plan” for a Scion iM? Just wondering if you take requests for designs for other smaller cars.
I would have to see it in person I’m afraid. But you could adjust the same concept.
Is it possible to get a plan (to the. Build myself) for a Scion IM?
Olá, poderia colocar as medidas por escrito assim posso traduzir, obrigado
Alvin, the chipmunk got into your audio (lol). Nonetheless a good build.
How come u did not just put the foam in the back just like that without all the lumber?? The back looks flat enough
You need to raise it to get storage underneath the bedframe. Unless you go on a roadtrip empty handed 🤣
Yes it’s for storage but also for length - I had to raise it to get over the backs of the front seats. It’s probably only about 5’ long on the floor.
How tall are you in centimeters? It is possible to sleep the other way for you? It would feel more natural for me sleeping in that direction. I am 176 cm.
@@stevenjensen7182 I’m 185cm and I just barely fit
Surely you can assemble that first stage out of the car......What happens if you get a puncture
Good idea!!!!
Excellent!
how tall are you
Great video. Thanks. I have a fit from 2014. Might one to do this. Do you have measurements in centimeter?
I don’t but you could easily convert each measurement (1in=2.54cm)
Have you actually taken a trip, with clothing & supplies for 2, plus camping & cooking gear, and used this? I’m guessing no? Picture yourselves coming back from a hike with muddy boots and wet clothes. How do you get from there, to inside a warm sleeping bag, in the rain?
Lol well if that’s your day-to-day use maybe you’d want an RV with a shower ;)

Is it really long enough for someone who is 6ft? I like the idea! I have a 2019 Fit...hope it hasn't gotten shorter than your Fit.
Its the longest of all the fit. Even the new hybrid one is shorter I think.
I’m not sure about the length of the 2019. If you didn’t mind losing the storage space you could always design one with the seats laying down.

All fits from 09 - 013 are the same interior sizes.

with the little help from chipmunks hahaha
gl with that no room lmao

Awesome! Yeah we love this year. And yes, we do often road trip and camp with it! Only thing you need to add is some folding chairs and a camp stove!
