If someone really wants to delve deep into Korean culture, they can learn the language, study the arts, history, and beliefs, apply to a Korean university. They can even visit, work, or live there on a visa. There are so many respectful ways to go about making another culture part of your life...and this is not one of them.
Love how they call Korean, Chinese, Japanese "races" and not "ethnicities" as if those ethnicities are the entire Asian I would love to see a girl/boy rcta themselves into a Pakistani or an Indian or just anything beside the Sinopheres
@@KindaBoredToday Thank you for sparing your precious time to correct me and i'm very sorry for pissing you off with my ignorance Now I'll proceed to correct my mistake
I’m South Korean. This is disturbing to the core. What the fuck. Most of us aren’t K-POP idols thank you very much. Our culture is about hard work, self discipline, self-control, making a life for yourself, and eventual enlightenment and self-actualization. It is NOT being “cute” and wearing weird accessories.
HAHAHAHAHAA!!! Almost all my college friends were Cantonese and OMG yeah definitely not, LOL. I remember visiting their houses and being all, "wait, your parents treat you like that?"
The glorification of Asians and Asian culture through anime, Kpop, and Kdramas has made many people forget about the unpleasant things in east Asian culture such as the high suicide rate, plastic surgery rates, and powerful families/gangs that can pressure police and courts. Most Asians don't look like cute anime girls or Kpop idols and things aren't so pretty beneath the surface
@PouLS Yeah, they only fixate on East Asian culture which is only a part of the continent. There's just a total disregard for west Asia, South Asia, Central Asia, and South East Asia. A lot of people also seem to forget that Russia is a part of Asia.
Not to mention the type of food we mostly have. Most western foods are processed, fried, or served on a can, they won't even cook it if it says "pre-cooked"
That's cultural appropriation for you. Skimming all the "good" and attractive things off the top while purposely ignoring the icky negative things at the bottom.
as an Indian, when you mentioned India and a bunch of other south asian countries I audibly gasped. its like...a fourth wall being broken, considering the fact that most people are completely oblivious to south and west Asia being part of Asia. 😂
Blud your country is in south asia not southeast asia. Southeast asian countries would be like the Philippines, Vietnam, Thailand, Cambodia, Singapore, Malaysia, Brunei, etc.
As an Asian, this hurts me so much with how little research they did. I'm not Korean but I am very into Korean culture, and it pains me to see them just summing Korea down as "kpop, kdrama, korean idols" 😭
Fr. I am Korean, but I feel the same. I'm dissapointed that these people think our culture is just Kpop, K drama, and looking cute. I bet these people can't point out anything about our culture except for Kpop lol
as a korean living abroad, every time i mention that i'm korean i get asked "whats your favorite kpop band" "whats your favorite kdrama" only ~5 people in my uni know that i'm korean for that reason 😐
@@TheLonelyMoon damn that must be annoying, I’m Asian but have very little features (like no mono lids) but I do have the very slight almond shape in the crease of my eye. One time this girl said to me are you Asian or Chinese? And I just BURST OUT LAUGHING and her friend Told her her that it’s racist but I don’t think it’s racist to ask someone’s race I think it’s just curiosity. But honestly I think it’s pretty stupid that people always assume if you’re Asian u HAVE to watch anime and HAVE to listen to K-pop. Also I do think that some anime’s and K-pop’s are VERY fetishised when it comes too younger kids, but yeah I will stop now
I've met some rtca ppl before. I'm mixed, and they often say 'omg you totally count as rcta!! You're so lucky you dont get the same hate!!!' Pookie what 😧
I don't think necessarily, if they introduce themselves to new people with being korean or japanese and those people are decent and respectful people they will accept it (I mean how can you not accept the race of someone). I for example also tell people I am egyptian when they ask for my race or heritage, but I can't speak the language and I don't "look" typically egyptian either, but it doesn't change the fact that I am trough my parents and I am thankful for having friends who don't take that away from me just because of my looks and language and instead respect me (even my arab friends) I know that is a different situation than the one in the video, but I do think there are some similarities. Personally I don't see a problem with what these girls are doing as long as they are happy and respectful, it doesn't really hurt anyone, whatever floats your boat kind of thing, you don't really have to befriend them. But also I think it is to overthink if you gain happiness from random people getting laughed at and I wouldn't deem that as any better behaviour then what they are doing.
@@MrsRedMink yeah maybe i was being a bit harsh, and i see what you're saying, but i feel like the situations are a bit different of actually being part of a race/ethnicity and just pretending to achieve an "aesthetic". if someone were to respect the culture normally without claiming to have changed their race, that'd be a different story, it's good to respect other cultures. but i think the problem is within how they take an entire race and culture and boil it down to an aesthetic. I'm not asian so i can't say too much about it, but it feels incredibly ignorant for someone with barely any knowledge about the culture outside of like kpop and anime, as shown in the video, to claim themselves as that race to be "cute". i take back what i said about wanting them to be laughed at (and i edited my comment to be a little less harsh), because i think it's clear that these girls have an internal self-hatred and that's not something that should be fueled further, however i still heavily disagree with what they're doing
It's hilarious that they think a slur can be any word they make up if they just ask you not to say it, when there's zero proof that the word was ever used against them.
@@LadyOfTheNight.I think they tried to be quirky and wanted to blend in with the transgender folks by giving themselves a slur that JUST SO HAPPENS TO BE disturbingly similar to the trans slur I'm 100% sure they based the "rcta" concept off of what they thought the concept of transgender is, too
Being asian isn't about being "cutesy" and watching anime all day. There are many different types of cultures in Asia; the famous structures, the foods, the language, the art, the music, the history, the traditions, etc.
There’s Middle Eastern asian, then there’s India Asian (I don’t know what the name for those countries are) and then there’s the Asian that comes to mind when you think of Asian so you they aren’t all the same as you said (just wanted to clarify for anyone who came here :D)

I'm married to an East Asian lady and am currently still learning her family's language. It's a long road to learning the language, culture, customs etc. but it's also a lot of fun, very rewarding and highly recommended. I sit at my in-laws' table, use chopsticks like they do, appreciate the same food they do, speak (poorly) the same language they do, participate in their same traditional celebrations... ... and yet never once have I tried to literally be their ethnicity. I'm always a Westerner, just one who is broadening his horizons and who has an East Asian family by marriage. These wannabes are an insult to everything that East Asian cultures really are. A typical East Asian dad would disown any child acting like they do.
Love how they took a transphobic slur, took away the first letter, and then claimed it as their own slur. Way to highlight how they're mocking the transgender community as well 💀
What exactly are gaijin gyarus trying to protest against? Like, gyarus protest against beauty standards in Japan and take inspiration from Western fashion. Gaijins just like the aesthetics? The style? The meaning behind the subculture?
@@HyperBoreana-mf4ql I think it's great you don't generalize Asia, but many people do indeed forget about those countries. That's just the stereotypical Asia.

I don’t blame them for liking Japanese sounding names, but I just wish it was like this a decade ago when I was still in middle/high school so I wouldn’t get bullied for it lol now people say I have a cool name and at first I thought they were secretly laughing behind my back!
same me with being chinese. I got constantly insulted and bullied relentlessely by a guy who now studies chinese at my same university 😭 and he also laughed at me when he saw me like bitch you hypocrite

There’s a line between “transracial” cringe and feeling like you’re part of a country. For example, I’m Asian (from Hong Kong) and I moved to the UK and I feel like I am British (like I’m a British citizen) but my race will always be Asian and I’ll always be from HK
I took part in an ethics bowl team in college, which is a competituon where you're given real life scenarios to analyze from an ethical perspective over the year, then there's a competition where you're asked a question about the case and have to make arguments against another team. We spent most of a semester trying to describe why trans-racial is different from transgender. It's so obvious, but so hard to explain.
to be honest, they are both changing fundemental physical traits assigned at birth/the perception of them, I think it simply just we have been desensitized to one and not the other so it seems like there is a large contrast its mainly because of that imo
how is it obvious? i'd argue that transgenderism is even more outrageous than transracialism because different genders have different brain structures, whereas brain structures in men are mostly the same regardless of race.
My cousins are British/Japanese, and one time, a girl called Sophie came up to them and said she was RCTA (White to Japanese) and asked for pointers on how to become Japanese. Apparently, Sophie was suspended for it. They still bring the story up on Christmas Dinner
I like the fact that everyone who wanna be asian only admires the "kawaii" aspect of certain countries like south korea and Japan while theres alot of other amazing countries rich in culture and traditions. These people are so delusional that the line between reality and this illusion is blurred. They cant tell the difference and the sad thing is reality is far more disappointing than anime and kdramas. Being south korean or japanese is a nationality, but actually appreciating their cultures and traditions is dedication; might not make you one of them but you can still be accepted. I like asian cultures and listen to jpop and a little kpop (expanding my taste and learning about new cultures) but i dont wanna live in japan or south korea or even become one. Im interestedin their cultures and like learning of the religions of them as well as thailand
Not to mention it’s not all sunshine and rainbows. Their cultures are EXTREMELY socially oppressive, and emphasize conformity and a strong social hierarchy above all other values. Anime is basically Japanese escapism.
Honesty as much as I like Japan, that place is the very last place I would want to visit. The place seems so strict that one wrong move and everyone is judging you like you just commit a crime
They don't know 90% of the 'kawaii cute asian girls' on social media use ton of photoshop editing and makeup. they dont look like that in real life, trust me
haha japanese culture is so "kawaii"! Japanese culture still being extremely sexist: Japanese culture being forceful on everyone to live up to a certain level regardless of who you are or what you do: Japan having one of the highest suicide rates: Young japanese adults not reproducing nearly enough due to them working too much just to live up to a minimum: but yeah anime and jpop are cool i guess
I’m Vietnamese (half) and it scares me to think that I will only be seen as a Smart Asian Kid, Busty Asian Woman or Cute Kawaii Asian Chick. I was heavily discriminated against for being Asian (although I’m not sure why students from the Phillipines, a country *pretty much next to mine* were safe from being threatened and laughed at) and now seeing people fetishising Asians, it makes my heart bleed. I’ve heard a couple of stories where people have gone to countries like Japan and had full on *existential crisises* because no one wears kimonos or uniforms and none of the teenagers were incredibly attractive like they are represented as in anime. I feel like Vietnam along with countries like India, Thailand, Pakistan, Mongolia, and Singapore are brushed aside because they’re “boring” (someone else’s words after I discussed this with them) and they don’t match the idealised aesthetic of Korea and Japan. If you want to learn about the values, culture, food, everyday life, or even politics of the country, go ahead. But just claiming to be Japanese or Korean because it’s “cute”, “desirable” or “special”… no one around you is gonna take you seriously.
I strongly agree with you. I'm South Asian and when I told people that I'm a South Asian they are gonna be like, "No, you aren't Asian because you're not Chinese or Korean." I mean Only Japan, Korea and China aren't the countries that fall within the Asian continent. There are Singapore, Thailand, India, Pakistan, Bhutan, Malaysia, Philippines, Nepal and many more. It won't be called as the largest continent if it had only 3 countries. And if you like their culture, values, foods, tradition you can just go on a tour or if you want to study there, yes, you absolutely can. But that doesn't make you Asian just because you feel connected to it. Claiming to be Asian just because it's "Cute" or "Special" is just stupid. Not every East Asian look like K-pop or those "cute" Asian influencers.

Korean American here! I just, wow. I was adopted to two white parents before I even turned one, and they tried with all of their might to make sure I never pursued an interest in my Korean origins. As I grew up with all of my all-white peers treating being Asian as a joke, I came to resent the way that I looked and, to an extent, all things remotely Asian. Going away to college was the first time I was able to meet other people that looked like me and learn about cultural things I've missed out on. I've since tried to reclaim parts of the culture I was robbed of as it's like reclaiming a piece of me that was always supposed to be there; be it through language, music, media, and historical dives. I've been fascinated by what I've seen, heard and learned, and am excited to someday visit Seoul to see that city and country I was born in! Unfortunately, I was also introduced to the idea of Korean fetishization. People who idealize being a Korean to an unhealthy degree and summing the entire culture up essentially as either an infantilized/cutesy culture where people are fragile porcelain dolls or BTS. It hurts when people tell me that I don't LOOK like a real Korean compared to their favorite K-Pop group. Bruh, I was born in Seoul. But it also makes me feel gross when I tell someone I'm Korean and they start salivating at the thought they're meeting "a real Korean," like I'm no longer a human, I'm just the subject of their weird, dehumanizing obsession. In short, please, PLEASE don't be an RCTA. It's harmful to try and claim culture and genetics (like, wtf) that were never yours to begin with. It just stigmatizes learning the culture entirely as cringe. As such, it only stands to makes it harder for people like me to try and reclaim what we've lost without a tainted sense of shame and embarrassment.
I personally think it’s fine to take interest in a culture that’s not your own or even wanting to participate in that culture. Just saying this cuz the last part seemed like it wasn’t with this belief (in case it feels like I’m reiterating your statements) I 100% agree with the rest tho

i'm also a filipino, and i agree with you to not be a filipino. And yeah we got alot of bullies on public schools, and i'm lucky to go to a high school that is a christian private school.
And it seems that almost everyone forgot that Asia is a continent...

I don't think necessarily, if they introduce themselves to new people with being korean or japanese and those people are decent and respectful people they will accept it (I mean how can you not accept the race of someone). I for example also tell people I am egyptian when they ask for my race or heritage, but I can't speak the language and I don't "look" typically egyptian either, but it doesn't change the fact that I am trough my parents and I am thankful for having friends who don't take that away from me just because of my looks and language and instead respect me (even my arab friends)
I know that is a different situation than the one in the video, but I do think there are some similarities. Personally I don't see a problem with what these girls are doing as long as they are happy and respectful, it doesn't really hurt anyone, whatever floats your boat kind of thing, you don't really have to befriend them.
But also I think it is to overthink if you gain happiness from random people getting laughed at and I wouldn't deem that as any better behaviour then what they are doing.
fr stupid rannies

White imperialism and it's consequences
I personally think it’s fine to take interest in a culture that’s not your own or even wanting to participate in that culture. Just saying this cuz the last part seemed like it wasn’t with this belief (in case it feels like I’m reiterating your statements)
