I saw Monk performing live at Manchester Town Hall in 1964 when I was 16 years old and to this day it is the best concert I have ever attended. Although my musical taste these days tends to be classical and opera nothing can beat the true greats. Parker ,Monk ,Coltrane and Davis.

I too was born in '48 & was fortunate enough to hear Monk, Trane & so many other great artists in SF. Too young to get in the Workshop we did experience the intensity brought forth with memories of speaking to Trane & following Monk up Broadway in his quirky way. Cherished memories.

Round Midnight is Thelonious Monk's most famous composition. Written in the key of Eb Minor, the 6 flats in the key signature take some getting used to but the tune contains lots of interesting chord changes and harmonic movements. [PianoGroove]

    It begins to tell,
    'round midnight, midnight.
I do pretty well, till after sundown,
    Suppertime I'm feelin' sad;
    But it really gets bad,
    'round midnight.
    Memories always start 'round midnight
Haven't got the heart to stand those memories,
When my heart is still with you,
And ol' midnight knows it, too.
When a quarrel we had needs mending,
Does it mean that our love is ending.
Darlin' I need you, lately I find
    You're out of my heart,
And I'm out of my mind.
    Let our hearts take wings'
    'round midnight, midnight

I am in my late seventies. As a kid of 21, I lived around the corner from the Five-spot and frequented it as often as I could afford. Now, in my old age, I spend my days reading and doing some teaching, and I listen to classical music. Before dinner, however, I take a nice glass of g&t and listen to jazz. Lately, I've been playing this a great deal, so lush and melancholy, and so...HAROLD LAND. I find him to be a profound player and can't get enough of him. The ensemble work here--Charlie ROuse, and of course, Monk himself, are glorious!

Monk once said (mid 50's) that Herbie Nichols was the most "Out There" Pianist alive. He was wrong, he himself was. As for Herbie, I saw Monk outside the Workshop in '63 0r '64 and asked about Herbie. All he said was, "He kicked the bucket", then he went back in and started the next set. He was truly in a league of his own.

"He played each note as though astonished by the previous one, as though every touch of his fingers on the keyboard was correcting an error and this touch in turn became an error to be corrected and so the tune never quite ended up the way it was meant to. Sometimes the song seemed to have turned itself inside out or to have been entirely constructed from mistakes…
If Monk had built a bridge he’d have taken away the bits that considered essential until all that was left were the decorative parts - but somehow he would have made the ornamentation absorb the strength of the supporting spars so it was like everything was built around what wasn’t there. It shouldn’t have held together but it did and the excitement came from the way that it looked like it might collapse at any moment…"

I always worry about who's coming up to replace or follow greats like Monk etc. in Jazz. Maybe that's impossible and maybe that's not bad because they continue to influence and inform contemporary artist across the music spectrum.

check out acts like Jacob Collier, Snarky Puppy, Dirty Loops, Robert Glasper, Jason Rebello. Not trad jazz but theyre all keeping the tradition alive, bringing it to the 21st century with some style.

For my taste, this is one of the best jazz pieces ever! I would like to listen to it played by Monk and Rollins... they played together, but I never found this track.
