      A LOT of VG musicians couldn't play with him, found his music too complicated. Monk threw knuckleballs. Hit this thing! lol

    Just the right amount of dissonance if you listen carefully, especially the intro by Monk. That's genius, I love it !

    Been playing the upright for years-and I still marvel at the ease at which Larry Gales has mastered his instrument, to be as young as he is also; it just seems so different from what a lot of other cats were doing at that time! 1-3-24.

    This swings like crazy...all the way through. Ben Riley is superb on this, playing a limited drum set. And Monk keeps you in suspense...as always.

      If I remember correctly, he didn't get all of his equipment delivered and that is the reason for the pared down drum set.

    This Concert is the most important concert I ever attended: Amazing, transformative, chocking … I knew and loved only Dixieland before (and still do love Louis) but Monk really plays so true, no bs … Merci Thelonious ❤️

    My teacher is having me transcribe Monk's solo. even though it isn't technically a complicated solo, the tight intervals make it rather difficult to decipher. I'm going to learn so much, though.

    When Monk first did this I practised the chorus for 3 months then played it in the local pub. Everybody started shouting,"Go away! Practice for 3 Years!" Then some friendly soul called out that it was a Jonathan & Darlene Edwards thing, so then I got a round of applause and was bought a few pints. Well, it's all a matter of taste so if you like shit 'chacun a son gout'.

      Interestingly enough Hendrix was a big fan of Rahsaan Roland Kirk. If you listen to the way Jimi voiced the blues you'll see why jazz composers and arrangers really dug his playing.

    first you gotta practice getting and keeping those fingers formed in the horrifyingly proper wrong position and proceed from there to correctly hit wrong notes, parts of the right notes or notes that suggest the right notes but aren't exactly it. With practice you could begin to feel the man and his unpolished brilliance.
