Please stay in touch, we miss you and want to know how its going with your apt. It doesn't need to be all plants all the time. Some of your hangers should be able to loop over the rod. Make sure your S-hooks will fit over the rod. Get a 12" level. Theyre incredibly useful for straighening pictures. Re the weight and length, people hang wet laundry over shower tension rods. Good luck. Youre doing well. Peace.

Dude if you aren’t feeling up to it then don’t! You need to do whatever it is that will help you feel better that will bring lil moments of joy and in time those moments will collect up enough to turn back into motivation. Do not feel shame or guilt for not making videos. You do not owe us anything, not even videos. But owe yourself love and peace. Plants go through shock when they’re uprooted even if they’re put in a pot w better conditions they still take a break as they settle in and refind the strength to to grow again, and they don’t feel bad about it. Take that lesson from your plants, give yourself some time. We’ll be here.

If you are not comfortable about the tension rod , take a wood block and attach it to the wall right under the rod where it hits the wall .. of course reapeat the same on the other side . IF you do not want to put nails in or screws use alien tape . You are such a sweetheart .

I think they look so good! Maybe you can do multiple tension rods to get more plants up and out of the way. With as large as your windows are it would be a vibe 🪴🌿🍃

To find out the paint color you can take off a light switch cover, take off a small chip of the paint, and bring it to a paint store to have the color remade!

I use a tension rod as well. To preserve sanity, tapped a discrete paneling nail (beige) under each end of the rod into the wall. Just for the added support and peace of mind.
Also made my own 3” S hooks from wire hangers in the closet using basic pair of pliers.

Do not worry about the dirty windows. The "filtered" light on the glass will keep your plants from being burned. I have orchids hanging in my dining room and had to buy a "filter" to cover my windows, when the light came through the glass and burned the leaves of my plants. I found a window filter that is a type of pliable plastic that has a cool design in the plastic and sticks to the window without any gummy stuff. It makes the windows look about as filtered as yours. I think your plants will be fine with the filtered light from those windows. Looks great as you have it!

You can get 3.5” s hooks on Amazon. I use this along with the longer s hooks to stagger my plants. I have tension rods in my skylights with 10” hbs on them. They have fallen off once only because with heat and cold, the rubber ends expand or contract, loosening the grip. So now I double check when the temps change.

I’m only half way in but if those are a little dry leave room for water weight! Lol don’t make the mistake I did.
I literally went around like “ohh you’re light… you’re light too… and you are… and you and you” and I never held up all at the same time while being freshly watered. And at first it was fine and then one day everything looked a lil off, I now know that “little off” was that they had slid down a small bit, just slowly sliding down until one day I started watering and the extra water weight pulling on one half of the bar before I could get to the other half it just fell. It was a mess! 😂🤦🏻‍♀️
    So just a warning.

Great idea, re: tension rods. I use shepherd hooks (for outside) stuck in 5 gallon pails of gravel. Cheap and moveable. I bought an extension ladder that you can configure in various ways, fold over for shorter sturdier one. Even though I rent it comes in super handy, especially at 02:00 AM when the battery needs changing in the smoke alarm on that super tall ceiling! Great for painting, hanging plants....there when you need it. Grab one on sale/clearance at your local hardware store. Depending on my space I leave it set up and temporarily put stuff on it. 😊

It's a good idea. I would try it too, as soon as Winter cold is not on the other side of the window. We are all big and can handle some set-backs.... try and try again. It's a crazy time when you move. It takes 12 months to get a place really cozy, but you might be faster. Ask for suggestions in a hardware store, about securing that fixture, to assure stability, so that you can be confident about it. Rain is good to clean the air. Get some good sleep. You have many friendly friends out here, wishing you well. That should soothe your soul somewhat and give you creative energy. Some of us might envy you for having a new home to style. Some of us don't want to be where we are, as far as the building goes. It's hard to find a new, affordable home. We are still looking. Best wishes for you, in your new place.

Oh my Lanta I love you, Nick! The rod looks great and very sturdy. I've been using a "heavy duty" 30lb tension rod in my bathroom for over a year with 5 plants on it with no issues and it's just the simple twist kind- yours seems way more legit with the locking system! It's such a good alternative to drilling! Good luck on your S hook hunt, it will look great with the staggered lengths!!

Edit: Home Depot and such stores also have S hooks in various sizes, as did my local mom&pop hardware but cheaper at the big box of course.
Also I would say it’s prob not the weight so much as make sure to be careful the bar doesn’t shift as you take (heavy, watered) plants on and off.

Benjamin Moore or Lowe’s can color match with a little chip of paint, no problem. Like, spot on. I have touched up massive drilling projects. I have no idea what color my walls are.
The windows probably both can fold into the apartment so you can clean the outside. Start with the bottom one. Lift it open halfway. Then look at the outer top for clips that you can push toward center to release the top from the frame and it will carefully be able to tilt in towards you. Clean. Then pull the top window down and on top you will see clips again… probably just on top instead of on the outside side of the window. Carefully fold down towards you to clean while the other is folded open too.

I have a few hanging on a tension rod in my plant room and it’s a cheapo one and it works great. It’s important to keep the weight fairly evenly distributed across the pole and it should be fine.

  • @Ash-xx5zd

The physics of suspension poles/bars works when there's more weight on it. Yea, too much weight will break and be greater than the friction that's between the end of the pole and the wall, but those companies invest a lot of research funding to know the limit is 60lbs.

Hi Nick! I had a chuckle watching you figure out this rod. I think you're safe with three or four such plants, they are very light. Your window design is from the 60's or 70's, and they can be challenging to take apart. The plant curtain is a great solution. I hope you "grow" into the apartment. I have around 20 moves in my lifetime, and my current one is an old 2-storey building in downtown Perth, with new windows, just not enough of them! Lol! It's always something! I bought the racking system from Costco (each wire shelf can hold 2000 lbs) for my aquariums. A small seating area between the shelves allow a plant rod above (84" high) that is rated for 100 lbs (so can easily hold my hanging plants even after a thorough soaking).
My living room is slowly transitioning into a little corner of nature.
      Totally worth the expenditures!
I'm in a north facing apartment, so no sun.🤔 Costco shoplights are growing my salads as well as my houseplants and aquarium plants.
Monstera deliciosa is indicating it might even fruit next year. Innovation just requires thinking outside the box, patience, and ingenuity.

Tension rods and shower curtain rods are all available at walmart and target, they have black, white, bronze and Grey. I also use then in doorways for plants and tapestry, and you can find all sizes.

So lovely to see you again, I’ve missed your face. The tension rod looks great & so sturdy. I think you have found a great solution to your plant hanging problems

I’ve never seen a tension rod like that before. I have faith you’ll get it though.
The one I use are twisty and you twist the rod (creating tension)in the window pane, no little buttons or little holes.
I’ll have to try some plants on my tension rod, I have 4 floor to ceiling windows 104” tall and 94” wide.
So many windows in my house, but so much more room for hanging plants 😅 I’m gonna try! Thanks for giving me some inspiration

As soon as you took the rod out, started messing with it and showed what it looked like I was like oh yeah that's a heavy duty one right there. That's not your typical tension rod whatsoever 💪I'm only a quarter of the way through your video so depending on how it works out 🤞I'll be getting one. I have the perfect window for it.

I have a similar window situation in my loft and we put the bar up as close to the top as we could get with a ladder and it really accentuates the high ceilings. We used two different lengths of S hooks too and the plants still hang low enough that we can reach them with a stepladder :)

With my trust issues and anxiety I would probably hang a bag of potatoes on it for a week and randomly wake up to check it 😂 Thanks for the video

Take the plants out of the hangers, loop the hangers around the rod, then put the plants bake in. You don't need hooks.
