  • Crombie have been manufacturing world class pure wool fabric since 1805 and for many years have been responsible for producing the world's most sought after and recognisable overcoats, worn by Kings, Emperors and movie-stars.
    As classic overcoats have taken a 2nd tier position to the garments made of technical fabrics of the modern era, a classically tailored outer coat is even more impactive than ever before and perfect to enhance the style of any chap who spends time in the outdoors and wants to cut a more formal silhouette.
    In this video I discuss the history and benefits of investing in a Crombie overcoat and how you can add one to your wardrobe for a lot less money than you may think.

    Dear sir
    I live in a cold part of Aus and watched this video about six months ago. Today we were at a market where some vintage clothing were on display, I recognise a Crombie label inside an old tweed looking coat and bought it. I am so pleased to own a near new Crombie coat and would not have recognised the significance of this if it weren't for your video. So thank you for reading all of us( who are interested) into good quality gents wear.

    When I look back at all the money I have spent on various synthetic puffers and zip up jackets over the years, I really wish that I had just splashed out on a couple of decent wool overcoats. North Face, London Fog and Moncler might be super trendy, but no matter how much you spend they look like crap after a couple of winters. I recently picked up some vintage Crombie style coats, One being unbranded (perhaps it was a brand name but label removed) pure wool that was made in Czechoslovakia and the other being from "Bodner Elem" These things are probably older than me, yet still look sharp and are beautifully made. Best thing is, none of my coats cost more than a pack of Marlboro yet they are warm and look awesome. If I had bought something like this years ago I would have saved so much money even if I bought one from Burberry at retail price!

    Aberdeen Cothal mill was the manufacture of the wool that made the original Crombie coat then they moved to Leeds and they manufactured the coats for some time then they outsourced to the Middle East the rest is history

    I have navy blue crombie, but my best crombie is the covert coat. Sadly,very sadly, people wear trash today, and crombie are out of business. Standards going through the floor, so very sad English culture has passed us by, never to return.

    Hello from Russia! Very great video, thank you so much! I have 2 vintage Crombie overcoats: the first overcoat - Maculette and Crombie co-production (made in England); the second is Crombie, Exclusive design by Claude Hilton. Both are dark grey, new condition! Fantastic quality! I like to wear them, timeless style!

      It sounds like you are well prepared for the winter, with your exceptional overcoats! Whilst modern, performance fabrics may be more efficient, I don't think anything will ever look smarter than the Crombie for outdoor, formal wear. Bravo sir - you are a stylish chap!

    Just picked up a lovely Crombie overcoat for £20 at my local vintage store. There's just a little sewing work needed on the inner lining of the sleeve and your excellent video has just persuaded me to get it fixed professionally. It's in mint condition on the outside, so thanks for the info and inspiration.

    Disappointed to see that Crombie have ceased trading, I suspect it will be another case of we didn't know how good they were 'til we can't get hold of them anymore.
    I recently picked up a stunning example ( B&W herring bone DB ) from that well known gentleman's outfitters...ahem ebay. I carried out an experiment today to test the thermal qualities compared to modern fabrics, deliberately only wearing chinos and a tee shirt, ok scarf too, I threw on the Crombie and went for an good hours walk ...New Years day drizzly and just 3 degrees. Absolute quality, I didn't overheat at all but at no time did it get cold, with a shirt and jumper or jacket it would have been toasty so just confirmed what I thought really, not only are these overcoats the ultimate in style, they're also the original "performance" garments.

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Its a savage blow really, but a sign of the times I'm afraid. There is no comparison in quality or style when compared to the parkas worn in the modern era. An overcoat evokes images of the 50s & 60s for me, of stylish men looking sharp in all kinds of weather. No contest!!!

    Found one in a charity shop for a couple of quid with crombie material, made by Nicholson & Co. Looking at the quality I would wager Nicholson & Co were one of the elite makers of these coats.

      Great to hear you already have a good overcoat, but you are correct, now (summer) is the ideal time to source such a garment, whilst their prices are suppressed by the good weather - good luck with your next purchase.

    Hello! I just stumbled upon this video looking for a bit of Crombie history (you definitely satisfied that need) because I love a stylish overcoat, my parents mentioned Crombie and I fell in love immediately.
    I have a question, since I'm relatively new to this brand - what do you make of the coats made by other manufacturers that use Crombie materials? I have one coat that says '100% Cashmere By Crombie' for example.
    I have a few coats like this. The other two of mine say 'Cloth Made By Crombie' (one of them is too big because the seller put up the wrong measurements. I measured it myself and it was way off! That was very disappointing).
    I live in Australia, so I'm hoping it actually gets cool enough to warrant wearing them!
    Great video with great knowledge and, of course, class!

    I have been lucky to buy 3 Crombies , grey, navy blue and camel brown in wonderful condition in less than a month on eBay. I had even considered buying an original new but C19 has shut Crombie down now worldwide (for now) and no supplier has any. So I tried eBay and wow I have £3000 worth of wonderful coats for buttons. I love the quality and I feel great wearing them with silk wool backed scarves.
    Couple with my black or tan Loake Bedale boots they dress up or down with trousers or blue or black jeans.

    I know someone who used to work for Crombie and he was amazed at how utterly stupid the management of the business were (In particular the owner). He left in 2007 having been basically bullied out of the company. The people that usurped and pushed him out of the business must have thought that the R&D, cad design/development work/order management was going to be done by the single push of some kind of magical button and products from foreign suppliers would turn up by teleportation overnight. Subsequently over the course of the next decade the products became worse and worse, the product offer reduced MASSIVELY (they used to sell masses of great quality shirts and ties) and its now more or less extinct due to the appointment of utterly lazy/thick/talentless fools. Shame as it had serious potential.

      @@TheChapsGuide Don’t worry. The idiotic owner we hear is trying to find a buyer for it. “The legend will live on” but not in his hands. It will thrive under a company that knows what they are doing (there aren’t many). But the post covid “relaxed/wfh” trend combined with the slow death of the office/business suit over the last decade may be the final nail in the coffin for this poorly run classic British brand. Only time will tell.

    Crombie shut down probably around the time that you made this video. They blame coronavirus but they had been looking for a buyer for at least two years before that so I don't think that business was booming.

    Hi, i realise that this video is over a year old, however, I am very lucky in having just been given a genuine Crombie in a rich chocolate brown colour. It is is in very good condition other than the pockets are worn inside and need re-stitching, which i plan to have done. My question is, is it possible to have these overcoats taken out? I am a 46" chest and the coat fits nicely over a shirt but i would like to wear it over a jacket, I suppose that this would mean taking it out at least a couple of inches. Do you think that this could be done by a tailor or seamstress?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  9 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      It can easily be altered if the garment has sufficient material within the construction to allow such an alteration. Sadly, it may not be cheap, but if the garment is of good quality, it will be well worth the investment and should last a lifetime.

  • @anton6299

    I found a coat like yours at a charity shop for 11 euros. It was manufactured by another brand but had a Crombie label in the lining making me think the cloth was Crombie. Is there a big difference in Crombie cloth vs actually Crombie manufactured? Did I make a mistake not buying it?

    • @TheChapsGuide
      @TheChapsGuide  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Generally Crombie material was used by many garment manufacturers in the past. It does not signify excellence in quality per se, but is an indicator that the garment began with a quality material and is worth further investigation. Good luck sir.
