    I like wearing my fedora every day. Hats are functional & practical & I've really taken to wearing a hat so much so that now I wouldn't even think of leaving for work without my fedora. It's a classic men's look & I encourage all men to consider making a hat part of their regular routine. On the weekend I usually wear my panama. It's a lighter & airy choice for here in Arizona especially in warm or hot weather. I think the has you're wearing is a trilby with the brim in the front snapped up.

      it is in style. its just that most men DONT have style and rather, follow trends and such. i own 3 fedora style hats and I'm 20. i get compliments all the time when i wear it with the right outfit (fits well, matching color coordination etc.)

    • @Bloatlord_the_Magnificent
      @Bloatlord_the_Magnificent 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      the problem is, nowadays people wear them with just a T-shirt. You really need at least a button down to pull off any kind of hat properly.

    • @VividFilmProductions
      @VividFilmProductions 10 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      or a basic black or white tee. or a henley tee even. preferably with a short or long sleeve button down. sports coat and suit is optional. fedoras can be dressed up and dress down as long as you keep it safe with the colors and make sure your clothes fit properly. and you have to be confident.

      What's even more sad is that you need the right face shape, most people especially younger today have that baby looking face while that 40s, and 50s look they have that masculine, handsome, sexy looking face back then.

    I wore a bowler hat with a Halloween costume few years ago. Going for a Dr Jekyll look with a bowler hat. After examining myself in it, I thought it really brought out my inner gentleman. I experimented with my look by wearing a cheap costume quality hat. It really added a new element to my look and fast forward a few years I got a legit bowler hat for my birthday. Nothing feels better than going retro classic.

    Hat is too small for your head...

    • @derekemrie2987
      @derekemrie2987 5 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      Yes, I agree...too small a hat for your facial type, I have no idea how tall you are so that's another issue to consider. Personally I like flat hats, I lke berets too, I wore a USN "dixie" cup for 20 years, not a very functional thing, but they did tell us in basic trng. if you fall over the side and have the dixie cup with you (not very likely) just keep it wet and wear it like "Giligan" and it will keep your head from burning up, never did figure out the functionality of a military Garrison cap, guess it does give a little warmth but will fly right off your head if there's much wind. Happy Hat Wearing!

    I'm 53 years old and I began wearing a Tilley hat (please see the Tilley website) this past summer to keep the hot sun, and the rain off my head... and I wear it with confidence. I get a lot of looks and comments simply because most men will only wear baseball caps, but I've never received any criticism so far. Thank you for all your great advice, my confidence had been lost for far too many years.

    I've been wearing fedoras with my suits for work in the winter time for 5 years now. Winter hats mess up my hair but these keep my head warm, if not my ears. Now everybody wears them. I use pomade instead of gel to keep my hair under control. Looking forward to the series!

    I am 55 and lived my entire life in Texas and one of the few white guys not getting skin cancer cut off my head or face. I attribute this to wearing hats a lot off and on in my life. My brother never wore hats and my dad stopped after LBJ left the office. Both had skin cancers removed, it is pretty common for white guys down here, but I escaped it thanks to hats. BTW, JFK not wearing a hat at his inauguration is the reason American men tend not wear hats any more.
    People tease me about my long beard making me look Amish with the hat, but no one gives me a hard time about the hat, and women tend to love it. I have a Churchill Homburg, a navy Stetson Fedora, a gray Stetson Open Road, a nice Resistol cowboy hat, and a beat up Resistol cowboy hat with a rattlesnake band that I skinned myself for yard work and such.
    It keeps the sun off my face in the summer and my head warm in the winter. If you want to wear a hat, wear one. Just get one that fits, like the video says. The biggest key to wearing a hat is to make it fit your outfit. If you wear a nice hat like a fedora, open road, or homburg, then you have to be wearing nice clothes. If you wear a beat up hat, don't be wearing a suit.

    Loved this! I wear a narrow brim fedora, myself. You're right. You have to wear it with confidence and I have a collection to coordinate with each of my suits. Frank Sinatra was famous for saying "Tilt your hat. Angles are attitudes." I was always taught to angle it so that the brim is slightly covering your weaker shooting eye. As always, thank you for another wonderful, informative video!

    What I've got in my picture here is a felt porkpie with a leather band that was on a western "gaucho" hat in Colorado. I re-steamed and shaped the brim to where it's a bit more western. Slightly up at the sides, angled down at the front and back.
    I like wearing it to musical gigs.

    One of the nice things about being a middle age man is you pretty much can wear what ever you want. I love hats from the Stetson Cattleman, to the newsboy, to the bowler. People just dressed better in the late 1800s to 1930s.

    Caught this vid late, enjoyed it very much.
    I'm UK based, the fedora is essential to my everyday attire, especially when the weather's inclement. It's not common to see this type of head wear, but for rain, drizzle and snow, it's just the ticket along with a trusty over-coat - it's extremely stylish and practical. My hands are also free from awkwardness of carrying an umbrella, though that has it's own charm if I'm ever so inclined to carry instead. As I'm suited and booted most of the time, wearing 'best bib'n tucker' as we say here, a hat, which in my case is my fedora, is a natural accompaniment perfectly completing an outfit.

    Antonio - Long time watcher here, love the vids. As a hat guy myself (2 Fedoras and 3 Trilbies) one thing that might be good to cover is storing and care of your lids. For instance, most people don't know NOT to lay a fedora with the brim side down as it will alter your brim style. Helpful info and thanks again.

I would really like to wear a hat but not sure what style I should go with. I really like the first one on your list. I just wished it was more popular. I wear a Trilby style Fedora with a little bit oversized suit coat and I love it. I find it awful that men don't find this classy anymore, my father thinks that I look like a mobster and I don't really like that term. I love the older styles more than the modern looks of today. I'm still in my teens and every time I wear a cabby or a Fedora I'm told that I look like an old man. I am confident about what I wear so it doesn't bother me that much. To me, that just means that I dress more mature than I'm expected to wear.

    Antonio- Love all your videos and especially like the idea of bringing hats back. I recently purchased a hat, think indiana jones in a dark olive. Beautiful hat but when i do wear it most often I get the dreaded hat hair. Any tips to avoid this? Also an Indy hat would be close to a fedora?

    • @HemiCuda63

    I would say that the hat you're wearing is slightly to small in its circumference, meaning that it sits to high up on your head. But alas my knowledge in hat-fitting is limited. Maybe in a future video you could touch on how low or how high up a hat should sit one's head. Btw, thanks for the vids. I highly enjoy them.

    Fedora hats are fashionably imposing, and not everyone can pull off wearing a hat these days, Im from Los Angeles, and I see tons of people wearing hats the wrong way, i always say the hat should always compliment your clothes. Never wear a cool fedora with a tap out shirt that's just tacky, never wear a fedora with basketball shorts, or jersey, go with a more casual sophisticated look. Always wear a fedora with the respect it deserves otherwise your just gonna look like an idiot. I'm not saying go out and buy fancy expensive clothes, you can do this on a budget and still look good with your fedora hat. Like Antonio said in the beginning of the video you gotta have confidence in wearing a fedora especially in this day in age, where us fedora enthusiast are being judged as being weird, creepy, hipster, try hards, and other names these haters like to call us..

    Thanks for this wonderful video! I just got a Panama hat, which I love for the summer suit cool look. I would like a wool fedora, like the 1940's styles. Many cheap fedoras are available with the small brim, and I dont care for this. I also have a large head, so the more typical 1940's style fits me much better.
    I am still looking for a link to the hat company that you mention in the video. I would love to support her company, and get a decent fedora.

    Flatcaps are a more casual yet trendy option, useful for vest + shirt combos.
    It's a shame really that fedoras/trilbies are nowadays associated with neckbearded, overgrown manchildren who criticise religion whilst having an almost dogmatic devotion to a children's cartoon aimed at little girls.

      I completely understand and agree up to a point. A nice suit doesn't seem to be a problem today, except they aren't worn except by professionals. Add an overcoat or raincoat/trenchcoat, wingtip shoes, and a decent, matching, properly worn, medium brimmed Fedora and Bogart lives! If you dig Fedoras, dress to impress, and you can totally pull it off.

    I prefere the newsboy cap. Just make sure it isn't too large. I receive compliements daily by random people on the bus and street. Problem with hats is that you must always have a certain outfit to go with it or else you quickly look like a fool. ^^

      Yes, but that was kind of the point. Hats are functional, but have been fashion oriented in modern times. A fedora is semi-formal like most business suits. A Homburg is formal, a top hat is extremely formal. I have many hats including a few Newsboys. I prefer tweeds to herringbone patterns. I have black, dark and light brown and a medium gray one. These are casual hats and don't look right If you dress up. Fedoras look best with suits, but the rules no longer apply, even though they were once very strict. That's probably why people didn't look like dopes. They knew how, where, when and with what a particular hat worked.

      I've never liked refering to fedoras and other associated elements as gangster or mobster. This was standard contemporary mensware in the early 20th Century. Most men did it, just as most men commonly run about in shorts and t-shirts today.

    • @sfreddy

      Jim G I understand the frustration however, a Trilby is technically is a type of Fedora. A Hatter, Hat Maker or Milliner (Also terms that have varying and sometimes conflicting meanings depending on the source you refer to) might refer to it as a Fedora. A Trilby can also be referred to as a Crushed Fedora. It was invented several years after the Fedora to make it easier for men to get in and out of cars. I am wondering if it really matters that much. I prefer to call it a trilby so as to differentiate it from the traditional Fedora.

    • @matthenderson3133
      @matthenderson3133 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jim G Some of them do indeed wear the traditional fedora, which is the reason for my previous comment.
      Most of them do wear trilbies, I agree, but that bothers me far less as I don't particularly like the trilby. I hope this has cleared it up.

  • @heathd1852

    I love hats, so thank you for the video.
    The hat you’re wearing leaves too much space between the brim and your ears making it appear too small. If the circumference fits comfortably then I suggest you try a hat with a deeper well so it can rest lower.
    IMO... the flat cap, paperboy hat, English driving cap, etc... is my favorite though. So many different styles and the ability to dress it up or dress it down make it the most versatile. I love fedoras but the hipsters have ruined that hat and look for the next few years. Thanks hipsters!

    Top Hats have been given slightly different styles with Steampunk. Slapping a pair of welding goggles on them make for a formal yet sci-fi look. Mad Moxxi from the video game Borderlands 1 & 2 has given the Top Hat a different look as well. I have a Top Hat that I have placed a pair of welding goggles on along with an Ace & Jack of Spades tucked in the band along the side. Added feathers along the other side. What is quite strange while looking at my Top Hat. With the goggles on it. It actually reminds me of an old Model T Ford. The square front end with large round head lights. There are more uses for a Top Hat than Black Tie wear. As long as you have the taste for Steampunk & the confidence to pull it off. I've worn it out in public just as I have described without being at a Black Tie event. Most people actually liked seeing the look.

    I love hats for style. I agree that they've lost their original purpose for most situations. Hats can also be a burden, much like clothes. So comfort is always a huge consideration. I don't wear much, simply because it impinges on my comfort.
    I think head ware is easily the best way people can increase their appeal. Some eye wear is awesome. But again I disdain discomfort.
    But for special occasions, I love wearing hats.
    As for the hat on your video, it's nice, but seems on the small side. But the style seems to fit you and your video personality. I think wearing classic style hats is too "stuffy" unless they're worn with more modern stylish "loose" clothing.

    Men's fashion is best when solidly rooted in pragmatism. Most of the hats are unapealing to me because they do not have a broad enough brim. The "western" hat may have a broad brim but the way it curls up is showy, and defeats the point.

      I think there is something to be said about the etiquette to wearing proper clothing. I'm a fan of Downton Abbey and if you watch the show they change their clothes about 5 times a day. Every outfit has their proper place and event. As I was watching a behind the scenes special on the show they talked about hats. The butler wore a Derby and the Lord wore a fancier Homburg. The etiquette specialist for the show said that a Lord would never wear a "lower class" hat such as the Bowler/Derby. But he also said that once you enter a building your hat must come off.

    • @tori8984

    +Real Men Real Style I'm not sure if somebody else already let you know about the reasons behind the lighter and darker colors of the western hats. The darker ones were made of felt or similar material and worn in the winter provide warmth by absorbing what heat they could. The lighter colored ones are generally made of a lighter material (Like straw or other grass-type material) to stay cool when worn in the hotter parts of the year.
