I had almost the same coat, purchased in 1978 at H Salt in Washington DC. I wore with pride for several years, but not often after moving to southern California. Eventually, I grew out of it and gave it to a cousin who moved to the midwest. A truly lovely coat. FWIW, I would pair it with a dark gray hat, dark grey or black gloves, and a ivory silk or navy or dark colored tartan cashmere scarf for a truly elegant winter appearance. This is more a garment for Chicago or New York than for Dallas or Los Angeles, cities where public places are provided with checkrooms to contain heavy outer clothing while visitors are shopping or enjoying performances.
I have a very heavy double breasted dark brown wool topcoat that I inherited from my father. He had it made when he returned from WWII. It is in great shape and no doubt will last for generations to come as long as I keep moths away. I am only truly appreciating it recently, and it will come in handy in NYC this winter. This topcoat reminds me if it and is outstanding. Mr.Joe H is truly an impressive gentleman. Thank you for the enjoyable video.
Definitely hold onto that! Not only is it special to you because it was your grandfather's, but it was probably made to a higher standard than what you would find today! Some of these vintage cloths are really exceptional!!
Awesome top coat, I love love love those lapels, they are the best I have seen on any top coat, they really give an air of Class & Elegance , Great choice Kirby.
Great looking coat! I grew up in the midwest in the 80s. I remember going shopping on Michigan ave in Chicago and seeing these substantial full length wool coats by Perry Ellis, Ralph Lauren, and Calvin Klein. These were the days of big shoulders, but the coats were still amazing! I like that you went for a classic timeless style. I agree a must have for every well dressed gentleman! Cheers!
As a guy that loves 20 degree fahrenheit weather, I would wear an overcoat in a Dallas breeze weather. It's an occasion to wear in the beautiful weather. Imagine the snow wearing such nice outfit. I prefer very cold and dry.
I have my great uncle’s tailcoat from the 1930’s. It has a concealed pocket in one of the tails which is still easy to reach. You can put something quite bulky in there without pulling the shape of the coat. Apparently it was common to put a pocket in back flaps of coats (my Uncle was a tailor himself). I don’t know why this is no longer done.
Superb overcoat that is very versatile and conservative in colour choice with great details such as martingale belt and vent. The coat is truly an heirloom piece.
You beat me to ribbing him about this. I too wonder what constitutes a cold day in Dallas. Certainly nothing to justify a super heavy topcoat over a heavy cashmere jacket. The folks in the background are wearing light clothing, and KA looks like he’s walking in the Arctic Circle.

Great coat K! All you're missing now is a nice pair of DRESS BOOTS to wear with. Frankly the look at the end of the video looked a little ridiculous with loafers, and I've noticed you have not yet gotten any dress boots (otr or bespoke) in your collection. I know Dallas doesn't require them but they're a cool seasonal addition that helps balance out an outfit proportionally between outerwear, hat and shoes, and they can be stylish as hell. So maybe now's the time for some balmoral or derby boots?
I had a double breasted wool overcoat by Canali about 3 years ago but I had to give it to the charity shop because I’d gotten too fat for it. At one point just after I first got it, I had to check the label because I was sure it had a fair bit of Cashmere blend in it. I was wrong though but I was amazed at how very soft it felt to the touch. My next two clothes purchases will be of a navy blazer and a belted tweed overcoat.
