    the moment you said 'it's got to hook you, and then reel you in', ive been realized that im reading book in a wrong way. lately ive been forced myself to read a material that had been recommended by my friends and i just go with it bcos it's a classic and literature and it suppose to make me feel smart and cultural while reading it. but at the same time im not enjoying the book. i guess i need to put it down and find another one that really entertain me.

    • @XLightChanX
      @XLightChanX 4 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      it also helps if you're not forcing yourself to read it for those reasons. i forced myself to read most classics during school because we had to, but once i didn't have to anymore, i actually picked them up on my own lol
      also, let's not forget that most people don't read through certain classic or nonfiction books like through those normal fiction books haha

    OMG “Pachinko” was such an amazing book, especially since I come from an Asian background, it really opened up my eyes to the historical connections😭😍 I would’ve never guessed that you would recommend such an amazing book! Plus, I’ve never been this early on your channel, and I’m proud😂
    I also recommend Demi Moore’s memoir, “Inside Out” if you have not read it already!

    • @dawnforlife
      @dawnforlife 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I read Pachinko a couple of years ago. I'm not Asian, but getting to Jenn's point about enjoying reading about places you're familiar with, I was living in Japan at the time and had visited South Korea. A year after I read it, I got to visit Jeju Island with my work and I was ecstatic because that was the island the family originated from. It was also very interesting to read some about Japan's history and the racial history there, even though I loved living there and really enjoyed the people and culture.

    Hi Jenn - I loved “Maybe you should talk to someone” by Lori Gottlieb. It gives a raw and honest voice to the personal experiences of practising therapists and what really goes on in their minds when they are in therapy sessions with their patients, while juggling with their personal lives in their own realm as well. it helps that Lori brings in hilarious elements to her writings too! The book was a total winner for me.

    • @yenlik5165
      @yenlik5165 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    Yesterday I finished Patti Smith's Just Kids. It's a memoir about her time moving to New York in the late 60s and 70s, her meeting the love of her life, the struggles of an artist. It really moved me. She doesn't hold back, is incredibly poetic and describes so many interesting people that were around in that time. Highly recommend. Feel like you would enjoy it.

    Hi Jenn!!! I think I’m going to start reading little fires everywhere!! My book recommendations for you are:
    1) A Thousand Splendid Suns: a historical fiction novel about two women living in Afghanistan. It’s by the same author as Kit Runner, but I actually enjoyed this one much more. I just felt a connection to the two women and I felt so much pain reading about their struggles. The book literally made me sob!!! It was amazing.
    2) Where the crawdads sing: a fiction story located in North Carolina, about a girl who lives alone in the marsh. You get to witness her grow up and tackle all of life’s challenges, like losing her family, love, bullies, and learning about nature. There’s also a murder mystery, which i think you would love!!!

    Valley of the Dolls is one of my favorite books. I actually tried to read it one time and only got 28 pages into it before deciding to put it down and pick it up at another time. Then when I did pick it back up I read it so quickly!
    OH MY GOD! I *L O V E* Edie! I was so not expecting that! I've never read any books about her before, so I'll definitely have to add that one to my wishlist! I absolutely love the movie Factory Girl, which is about her. It's not considered a great film and it's not acclaimed or anything, but I first saw it when I was 12 and have loved it ever since. (That would be 12 years ago, by the way.)
    Jenn, have you seen the film Belle De Jour (1967)? I feel like you would like it, considering where our interests overlap!

    I really loved Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan! As an Asian American, I've had a complicated relationship with my immigrant mother and this book really delves into both sides of the child of the immigrant and the mother's journey to come to America. I don't know how to explain it but I feel like it helped me mature and try to understand my mom instead of pushing her away and stuff. I highly recc to everyone!!!

    Read the Silent Patient! It's a psychological thriller and you would definitely love it. It's my favorite thriller! My fav book I've read this quarantine is woman at Point zero.

    Im so appreciative of your videos because you motivate me and inspire me to live an active, healthier life especially in quarantine!! Bc time is still going by very quickly for me, even without reading, which is not good for me haha.

    Kazuo Ishiguro is an amazing writer. One of the few authors that writes in a way where you can be completely wrapped up in the book and simultaneously reflecting on your life --- Never Let Me Go is one of my favorites :))

    This is going to hurt, telling stories from the perspective of a former frontline doctor in NHS. It is going to make you laugh so hard and also sad in the same time. Worth a read! x
