To tell the difference between the ACe and AH I use railpictures and just type in the unit number. Also looks like UP #1995 could use a repainting to keep those colors bright.
Google the images of them they are almost identical but the vents on the side behind the cab are slightly different.. The ACe has the 2 horizontal vents and then 1 square one above it.. The AH has the 2 horizontal vents and 2 square vents, 1 is behind them then the other is in the same spot as the ACe. I'm still learning but the SD70's are by far my favorite engine out right now
The difference is weight. An ACe, depending on customer specification can be ballasted to a weigh anywhere from, 400,000-432,000 lbs. If I'm correct UPs older SD70ACes were ballasted somewhere around 416,000 lbs. The SD70AH is ballasted to 428,000 lbs, H meaning heavy. CSXs 70MACs, and, ACes, as well as Montana Rail Links ACes. Are also ballasted to 428,000 lbs. NS SD70ACes are ballasted to 432,000 lbs. The venting has nothing to do with the difference between a, SD70ACe, or SD70AH. Early ACes did have a vertical intake vent for the inverter cabinet, next to the two horizontal vents. EMD switched sometime around late 2010, to the same style vent, as used by the inertial air intake at the top of the equipment cabinet. Which sits behind the cab. This was done as a cost saving measure. Early ACes are being retrofitted with the new horizontal intake.
