    I love the idea of electronic for all your cited reasons. Bought a new ego and the mulching was awful. A cheap gas mower was mulching twice as well. Returned it that week and bought a Honda.

      Thanks for sharing. it is getting better as the years go by. but yah, i found if you aren't mowing a few times per week you shouldn't be mulching with these mowers.

    For my 5,000-ish square foot lawn, battery powered is perfectly fine. For people on the fence, I'd suggest grabbing a cheap clearance model at the end of the season when stores are trying to clear out their stock. That way, it's a much smaller financial risk if it turns out that you don't like it. By way of example, I bought a $650 EGO mower at Lowe's last month that was marked down to $162, and they still have a bunch of $200 80V Kobalts and hanging out in the garden center.

    Thanks Ginja for the rivew. I'm almost sold on battery. The only con besides power is the fact that you would have to commit to a brand to lower cost. If batteries were universal, like AA or the button batteries that can be use on anything no matter the brand gas would really become obsolete

    I have the exact same mower. I had mine a few months ago and cuts very well with nice stripes with the plastic flap in the back. I also called Toro for the rear discharge at no cost. I drilled 2 holes the 1st day I got my mower to fit my Big League Check Mate striping kit. I really like my battery operated mower. I got rid of my Toro gas mower I had for several years. Less maintenance with the battery operated one with no gas and oil to worry about.

    I looked at my mowing habits this past year. Currently have an old Toro recycler with B&S 190CC. 38 mows this year, averaging 6 days per mow. Usually that is a 3.5"-4" HOC, taking off 2"+ every time. I can't ever imagine taking half an inch off the top, else i need to be mowing every other day or so. Not possible, it always seemed to rain when i would try to get an extra mow in. A Max Power blade made all the difference in my mulching quality, no more wet clumps on the lawn. The electric mowers look great for those homeowners who are not as meticulous with their yards, or love to mow very frequently, like maybe a smaller yard, or don't have the lawn type (tall fescue) and growth I do. Looking at getting a new model Super Recycler with the 190 CC next year. Maybe i need to stop fertilizing?

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      love the comment mark. the hoc issue is resolved by mowing over the area twice. i find gas powered mowers encounter the same issue but it requires scalping much more off the top as your saying.

    Thanks for being one of the only honest reviews on this mower. You accurately provided the good and bad points about this mower. I have this mower and a 5200 square ft. thick tall turf fescue "carpet-like" lawn. Battery powered machines just don't "cut it" for my yard unless I mow every 2-3 days. I have tried a few top rated models from different manufacturers. This mower leaves a trail of clippings down the right side of the deck if the grass gets a bit tall. I don't think the "Vortex" feature does anything noticeably better than my other my other battery mowers without this feature. The blade has a lower sail as most battery mowers do to preserve run time so you're never going to have the suction that you can get with gas mowers. I tried a Gator blade on it but the cut was no better, it still left debris on the lawn and it ran the battery down faster. I did replace the front wheels with ones from the Super Recycler. While the stock one look cool, they are cheap plastic bearing units and the very squared off edge profile made it difficult to initiate gradual turns in the grass, like going around trees, etc. where you are not really picking up the front end of the mower. They seem very "grabby" when trying to turn. The Super Recycler wheels have ball bearings and a slightly rounded edge profile which helps here. My unit's personal pace seemed to require too much effort to get it moving, compared to my other personal pace mowers, and I found that by removing 1 revolution from the Personal pace handle return spring it made all the difference...much better. I dislike the auto blade speed controller...I guess on Super recyclers you now have a switch to maintain high speed if desired. Under the deck the front baffle is held on by a couple of screws and has a gap where grass always gets stuck. I used a silicone adhesive on the backside of that gap to seal this up. That baffle has a bump-out profile which is supposed to allow for some overflow relief for the blade, but I don't know how well that works since mine leaves clippings on the lawn unless I am taking VERY little off the top. On level ground my front left (non discharge side) wheel does not contact the ground like the other 3 wheels (poor manufacturing?) I dislike the wheel adjusters but can live with them. Thanks again for the great video!

    I have a Kobalt 80V 5Ah and it works flawlessly. I mow 2k sq/ft and I don’t use up more than a 1/4 battery. Last year I had Bermuda and even on the thickest parts it wouldn’t bog. It would automatically kick into overdrive and drop down as soon as it went past the think section. Now with my Tall Fescue it mows even easier. I wouldn’t hesitate buying an electric mower for a home owner with a yard smaller than about 8k size.

    Like all your content. Gotta call you on the more longevity on a steel deck though. Especially after a few years where rust underneath comes into play making the under deck cleanup a PITA. Keep it honest, remember they gave you a free one. The Honda composite decks are the leader for many reasons. Composite decks in a push mower are the way to go. Toro should get on board with this.

    • @pestandlawnginja
      @pestandlawnginja  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      you know Don. didn't really think about the issues with rust. My issue with the plastic poly decks is over time they will flex. flex will affect the mow quality. I'm not a big fan of the plastic for that reason. I had some clips explaining this point in detail but the video was running long.

    I'm ALMOST sold on battery-powered mowers, just not QUITE yet. Some brands that have the "plastic" decks also offer lifetime warranty. Of course, the product has to be registered. Having said that, I DO have a 40v battery-powered string trimmer (Ryobi) and it works great! 👍 The 4ah (ampere hour) battery, however, takes quite awhile to charge. I just have to be sure to charge it immediately after use.

    • @jimmaul
      @jimmaul 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      For me, the best part about the metal deck is not necessarily the longevity, but the weight. The heavier the mower is, the less the bounces around on the lawn and the better the cut. Not that the battery mowers are really that heavy, but the plastic ones are just way too light in my opinion.

    This fall I didn't want to get more gas for the Timemaster so I only used the 60v Toro. The stragglers drove me crazy. There is nothing like the Toro Timemaster. It is heavier for me since I'm only 5 ft. But the struggle is worth it.

    • @pestandlawnginja

      its one hell of a mower for sure! i put it through the ringer!

    • @mellowjammer
      @mellowjammer 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Totally agree! Had my Timemaster since 2012 and then tried the exact battery model shown here. I am very dissapointed. Hate the curved personal pace handle. The old straight linear action design was much better. For a 22" mower the blade is only 21.25". Battery mowers have thinner blades with less lift to increase run time at the expense of cutting performance. On my thick tall fescue lawn it leaves clippings if you try anything more than a very light cut. The square-edge profile of the front wheels looks cool but makes it tougher to make turns around trees where you don't lift the front end. I will only use this battery mower when my lawn is too soggy to use the heavier Timemaster.

  • @ScottAyersStuff

    I purchased one of these last fall because my gas mower died and this was the only mower left I could buy. I paid about $400 for it which turned out to be a pretty good price. It cuts the grass nicely. And I love how quiet it is compared to gas mowers. BUT..........I do a lot of over seeding using an aerator and the mower's blades don't spin fast enough to pick up the clumps very well. And it also does not pick up the fall leaves as well as a gas mower. I knew these things were going to be problems before I bought it. But I was stuck and had to pull the trigger earlier than I wanted because gas mowers could not be found in my area in the fall. I do like it a lot, but I'd like it a lot more if it had the option to *MANUALLY* increase the blade speed to turbo mode when I need it.

    I was literally just in Lowe's and looked at mowers. They didn't have one gas powered mower. Everything displayed was electric. I chalked it up to being winter. All the points you brought up are perfect for a spacially challenged area like my seasonal campground. Standing up on end, it would store nicely in my small shed.

  • @roadfordays
    @roadfordays 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    I bought the 60v Toro mower, string trimmer, and snow blower. So bam, THREE batteries available for any of those jobs. The batteries are heavily discounted when packaged with a tool compared to buying tool and battery separately. We have 10,000+ sq-ft of lawn. Most trims only need one battery, and it's a 10 second swap to a second battery if needed.
    The Toro mower easily hammers through thick weeds that my neighbor's gas mower constantly stalls out on. The Toro is torque-sensitive and it will speed up when needed to cut through thicker stuff. The power push assist is sensitive to how hard you push the handle, too. The exit to the bag will get clogged from time to time, though.

    I have a Craftsman 60V mower I picked up at Lowe’s for $200 (saw it on SlickDeals). I’ve had it since 2019 and it runs great on my 1600sf TTTF lawn in NorCal. Only gripe is that if I’m cutting more than 1/3 of my lawn at a time, I sometimes have to charge up the battery a second time. 2 years with my Ego mower. I have a self propelled model which is unnecessary. It is so light it is easily pushed for my 4000 sq ft lawn. Battery can be fully charged in 1 1/2 hour and I have the dual battery charger. Cut quality is a little less than a gas mower because of the weight of the mower. A heavy mower tends to stay flatter than a lighter mower. But I mow one way then 45 degree the other and it looks perfect. Mulching leaves at the end of the year yesterday....38 degrees out. My old Craftsman would have taken an hour and ether to get started...I just drop a battery in and go. The great thing about Ego is I bought the mower w/batteries and the snow blower with batteries then I bought a trimmer, chainsaw, and hedge clipper without batteries as they all use the same sized battery. I am more than happy to not be changing oil, having gas, spark plugs, filters and draining everything each winter.

  • @rickdoane7174
    @rickdoane7174 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

    a drawback is cut quality - the speed of the blade is less than a gas mower ( i believe 2500 rpm vs 3600 rpm for gas) - which is done to save battery life - which in turn effects the lift that the mower has - if you cant create enough lift to stand up the grass to cut it - then you are pushing over the grass - which leaves straglers and half cut grass - this is from personal experience using a Greenworks pro 60v push - know that other have experienced similar issues with other brands including toro. Another issue is the auto sensing speed control - mine would sense deeper grass - but it took 4-5 steps before the mover speeds up to compensate - which leaves a 4-6 ft swath of half cut grass. Some have manual turbo buttons to speed up mower in heavy grass. personally - i parked the greenworks - bought a a used honda hrx217 - threw 2 new blades on - twice the cut quality of the electric mower - im in the north with TTTF.

    I have a Ryobi 40V battery powered mower I got a several years ago. It is still going strong. It’s range is around 7500 square feet. I agree that battery powered mowers have come a long way recently. I love how light it and it doesn’t take up much space. The lighter weight prevents compaction of the soil. Electric mowers are way better for the environment too. I can’t wait for the day when everything is completely electric

Briggs & Stratton makes it impossible to talk to anyone and #TheToroCompany said they would have someone call me and no one ever has.
