Speaking of Jeff Porcaro's intros, there's one in particular that I've always loved: Bill Champlin - Without You (1981). He just starts the groove with a gorgeous set of triplets that puts you in the right mood for the rest of the song!
He did that during the "Push Back the Walls" sessions with Scott Page, etc. It's here at TH-cam. It was Scotty, Lenny Castro, several others, and right before they kicked it off, he dropped a handful of Regals across the snare in front of him; the whole room cracked up! 😂
After noticing a very young-looking drummer on TV's "Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour" in August 1971, my wife and I got to hear 17 year-old Jeff Porcaro live when the husband/wife duo played Fort Wayne, Indiana's Memorial Coliseum on Sunday March 19, 1972. The local newspaper later reported that it was the highest-grossing concert to date in the city's history. Just two years later we recognized Jeff on drums with Steely Dan when they headlined at the U. of Toledo on Sunday April 21, 1974. He took way less money than he was making with Sonny & Cher for the opportunity to play with Becker & Fagen. When that tour ended in July, they made 20 year-old Jeff Porcaro the session drummer on their next album "Katy Lied," released in early 1975. Later that year he became the studio and touring drummer on Boz Scagg's Grammy-winning album "Silk Degrees" --- and he did all of this before the age of 22. I'm always hoping to hear from another fan out there who saw Jeff in concert with both Sonny & Cher and Steely Dan, but so far no luck.
back in the 70 recording studios used metronome.but the click went out from the headphones i got in to the microphones, the the studios begun to used the" blinking light metronome"
My God, what a pocket! It’s like an easy chair for any rhythm or lead instrument to to just rip within. Sweet snap of that snare. And Jeff Porcaro just did this in his sleep. We lost an amazing musician far too soon. Does anyone know where to find this song/project in full mixed form?
Amazing footage, Jeff was long gone before I was born but he’s a huge inspiration for me on the kit and Watching videos like this makes me so happy, thank you for uploading this. RIP legend
Just the other day I was listening to Bobby Caldwell's Carry On and I decided to look up who played on the record. Sure enough, Jeff was on it. It brought a huge smile to my face. While I haven't actively sought out all of his recordings, it's great to stumble onto one.
Check out Jeff Porcaro's Discography. It's as comprehensive a list as you can find, in alphabetical order by artist, and it even tells you how many tracks he plays on each disc. I probably have more than 300 of those CD's just to be able to sample Jeff's approach to so many styles of music. He was one of a kind.

@@martywalsh3684 I was part of Scott Page's private online community "Toto Network" for a while. We catalogued 700 ALBUMS, *not tracks*, with Jeff's groove on them. Maybe his workload was why he left us so soon...? Sometimes 4 sessions a day!? You kidding me!?!? WHOA!
@Marty Walsh 5 August, 2021, is 29 stinkin' years without THAT groove. Having spoken with those who were friends of his, I was told he was one of the most generous people. I suppose, when it's your Time to Go, it's your Time. I miss that groove, tho.

Love those fills in that intro. I know Bonham was one of Jeff's idols and he really nails those triplets ala Bonzo style but better IMHO.
